ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

gbA is a design-orientated architectural studio located in Montpelier, Vermont. We have a total staff of eight,

including three principals, two registered architects, two architectural designers, and an office manager. We are a

small studio that stresses 100 percent principal participation and a “hands-on” teamwork design process. We

believe that Architecture is an art achieved by collaboration. Our designs are inspired by culture and place resulting

in environments that are a joy to inhabit.

EXPERIENCED TEAM LEADERS

gbA’s design process emphasizes open studio collaboration, so that every client benefits from each member of

gbA’s highly experienced team. By involving the firm’s principals in all phases of the project, we achieve a

consistency and thoroughness that many larger firms fail to provide. Our approach maximizes opportunities for

creativity, and has produced numerous award-winning designs for highly satisfied clients.

CLIENT SERVICE

Our intention is to provide innovative design with a high level of client service. We feel that our personalized team

concept is the reason that much of our work is from repeat clients and direct referrals. We believe that the ability to

combine client and user input with innovative design, in a technically competent and cost effective structure, is one

of our firm’s greatest strengths.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The communities in which we live and work are our inspiration. Our daily interactions and working collaborations continuously refine

our thoughts on architecture and place making.

COLLABORATION

Architecture is, in part, the art of collaboration. We engage our clients and building users as critical participants in a productive

dialogue through all phases of a project. It is this essential exchange that allows us to create interiors and built spaces that both meet

the specific needs of our clients and provide welcoming, aesthetically pleasing spaces.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

We believe that our designs and business practices represent our values concerning economic, social, and environmental

issues, and that the built environment should enhance the greater community.

PROGRAMMING

The first product of our collaboration is a series of sketches that explore the function, quality, mood, appearance, massing, scale, and

adjacencies of buildings, as well as initial material concepts. During programming, we simultaneously assess the opportunities and

challenges of a given project: site considerations, project cost, sustainability issues, and the building’s cultural context. These sketch

ideas are tested and refined based on client input to formulate a design concept that is both appropriate for the place it will occupy

and a realization of the client’s functional and aesthetic needs.

DESIGNING SUSTAINABLY

Our practice of Architecture explores design, construction systems, and sustainable strategies to best address the immediate and

future needs of each project. We are continually refining both design and building methods to align with current building science as a

way to minimize each project’s environmental footprint. We work within our clients’ means to build, design, and detail in a sustainable

way, as well as to develop innovative solutions that address the specific needs of a project’s users.

EXECUTION

We oversee the construction of every project to ensure that work is performed to the exacting standards of our clients and ourselves.

THOMAS BACHMAN, AIA ([email protected]) Founding partner of gbA, Tom has been a committed member of Vermont AIA for over twenty years and is Past President of AIA-VT. Tom is strongly committed to communities and its people. His projects’ successes can be attributed not only to the building’s design but also to building a strong client/architect/contractor relationship. He is currently working on Jeudevine Memorial Library Pre-Development Study as well as new State of Vermont Visitor’s Center. DIANTHA KORZUN, AIA LEED AP ([email protected]) Diantha is a firm principal and LEED AP and immediate past president of AIA New England. She is also on the architectural advisory committee for the non-profit Edge of Seven in Denver, and the Design Awards Chair for AIAVT. Diantha has shown sincerity in her dedication to communities and sustainability believing architects can create positive change through design. She is currently working on Littleton Food Co-op and the new Anglo American School in Sofia, Bulgaria. GREGG GOSSENS, AIA ([email protected]) Past President of the Vermont AIA, and founding partner of gbA, Gregg has experience in all levels of architectural and urban planning and has been a leading force in organizing and promoting a new Capitol District Master Plan for the City of Montpelier. His recent projects include the Brattleboro Food Coop and Montpelier’s Bio-mass and he is currently working on Montpelier’s One Taylor Street Project and Jeudevine Memorial Library Pre-Development Study JESSICA THYME, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP ([email protected]) Jessica is an architect and LEED AP and has been on the gbA team for 9 years. She is currently working on the Red Clover Commons in Brattleboro, VT and Gile Community Housing in Hanover, NH. Our clients benefit from her ability to produce consistent, quality work under strict schedules as well as her enthusiasm for architecture and the design process. JEFF STETTER, AIA ([email protected]) Jeff has been on gbA’s design team for over 24 years with 28 years experience in the field of architecture. Jeff has been recognized by past clients for his ability to obtain consensus among many parties of opposing viewpoints, and his thorough attention to detail assures the very best service for the client. His recent projects include the VSECU Rutland Branch and the NSB Headquarters project and is currently working on Montpelier’s One Taylor Street project. CHARLIE WILLNER ([email protected]) Charlie is one of gbA’s Project Managers and Designers. He is part of the design review, critique, and the development process. He is currently managing numerous projects, including Sykes affordable housing, as well as a market rate housing project, in New Hampshire. Charlie brings with him years of construction experience and has a great ability to convey design specifics in his drawings. JESSICA GARDNER ([email protected]) Jess is an Architectural Designer and part of the design review, critique and development process. Jess brings a passion to solving design problems in a socially and environmentally responsible way. Her love of architecture and construction started from an early age during the renovation of her family’s home. She is currently working on the 12 Morgan at Centerra project. SARAH LANZIT ([email protected]) Sarah is gbA’s Office Manager. She assists in the creation of contracts, presentations, and marketing materials, as well as the organizational side of our collaborations, including business operations.

A founding partner of gbA, Tom has been a committed member of Vermont AIA for over twenty years and is a past President of AIA-VT. Tom is strongly committed to communities and their members. His projects’ successes can be attributed not only to the design process, but also to the emphasis Tom places on building a strong client/architect/contractor relationship.

CURRENT PROJECTS

JEUDEVINE MEMORIAL LIBRARY Tom is leading gbA’s work on this project, which is currently in the pre-design phase, as the team develops options for an addition and renovation to the beloved historic structure. ILSLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY Led by Tom, gbA is redesigning the Ilsley Public Library to better fit the needs of the staff, patrons, and community. This will involve a renovation and expansion of the existing structure. VSECU gbA has fostered a long-term relationship with VSECU, and Tom is leading our latest collaboration to design and construct a new operations center for the company. NORTHFIELD SAVINGS BANK BRANCH Tom and the rest of the gbA team are working to design a complete renovation of NSB’s Northfield Branch, in order to allow the site to better fit both the business and its patrons.

gbA—FOUNDING PARTNER Tom works with a wide variety of clients to follow their projects through from the design phase to the completion of construction. He takes a lead role on many of these projects, while also overseeing and partaking in marketing, business development, and administrative management of the firm. NEW ENGLAND PARTNERSHIP, LLC Tom worked with New England Partnership, LLC for five years, and led the design process for a range of projects including schools, housing complexes, commercial offices, and municipal projects. ROBERT BURLEY ASSOCIATES Over the course of his year with this firm, Tom led projects to renovate residential homes, as well as office buildings, and assisted in the design of an addition to the Pavilion Office Building.

A founding partner of gbA, Gregg is a committed believer in a collaborative creative process and the ability of design to transform and enhance communities. Gregg is a former President of the Vermont AIA, and has experience in all levels of architectural and urban planning. He has been a leading force in organizing and promoting a new Capitol District Master Plan for the City of Montpelier.

CURRENT PROJECTS

LAKEVIEW TERRACE Gregg is one of the leading members of gbA’s team working on the Lakeview Terrace apartment complex. This project is being designed for Redstone—a leader in commercial real estate in Vermont, and a long time client of gbA’s. SYKES MOUNTAIN AVE Gregg is overseeing work on this affordable housing project. The site is being designed for housing Vermont—a frequent partner of gbA. WINOOSKI BLOCK & THE STRAND Another project being created in conjunction with Redstone, the redesign of the Winooski Block building and the entertainment venue “The Strand” is being led by Gregg.

gbA—FOUNDING PARTNER Gregg works with a variety of gbA’s clients to see projects through from conception to completion. He also focuses on client outreach and marketing, while collaborating with the studio’s other architects on nearly every project that comes out of gbA. THE BURLEY PARTNERSHIP While working with this firm, Gregg led many projects, including the Statehouse Addition, the Pleisner Gallery at Shelburne Museum, and multiple residential and commercial sites. He was also on teams that designed a variety of residential and commercial spaces. MILLER, WAGNER, COENEN ARCHITECTS Gregg took the lead on the City of Germantown Police/Library Municipal Complex, the City of Marshfield Library, and a variety of other municipal projects while working with this studio. HGA ARCHITECTS During his years with this firm, Gregg assisted on many design projects, including the City of Minneapolis Metropolitan Cultural Arts Center, and the Advance-Thresher Restoration Project.

A partner of gbA, Diantha is committed to socially conscious projects and the creation of beautiful, sustainable buildings that are suited to their environments. She believes architects can create positive change in communities through design that is both creative and thoughtful. Diantha is a past president of AIA New England, and AIA Vermont, and is on the architectural advisor committee for the non-profit Edge of Seven in Denver, Colorado.

CURRENT PROJECTS

LITTLETON COOPERATIVE Diantha has led work on multiple co-ops in her time at gbA. Her most recent project in this field is the Littleton Cooperative. The expansion of the Littleton Food Co-Op’s current space will allow for continued growth of sales and an expansion of services. ANGLO-AMERICAN SCHOOL OF SOFIA Diantha is leading work to design Phase IV of AASS’s redesign and expansion. This phase will include a performing arts theater, a new black box theater, a new swimming pool facility, expansion of the sports pitch, parking, additional classroom capacity, and a multitude of other miscellaneous renovations and improvements. This work is being conducted remotely for the most part, with Diantha making trips to Bulgaria to see the site and work with the client and consultants in person.

gbA—FIRM PARTNER Diantha leads gbA’s design and construction work on many projects, working with a variety of clients to see projects through from start to finish. Her extensive design background helps to ensure design integrity, as well as construction integrity, on all projects in the office. Diantha also assists with vision and strategic planning for the firm to ensure the studio remains relevant and on the forefront of architectural design for the next 25 years. TRUEXCULLINS ARCHITECTURE Diantha worked as a Project Architect and Manager for TruexCullins for seven years, during which time she oversaw a multitude of projects. Much of her work for this firm was with international partners, including the Anglo American School of Sofia, Bulgaria, and the American International School of Bucharest-Romania. CARNEY ARCHITECTS Diantha served as a Project Manager and Architect for Carney Architects in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and worked on the design for the Jackson Hole Center of the Arts and the Sublette County Library, among other projects. HUTTEBALL & OREMUS ARCHITECTURE Diantha led many projects for Hutteball & Oremus, with a focus on school buildings. These included the Monroe High School Addition, Presidents Elementary School, and Highlights Elementary School.

Building—Currently underway U32 Middle & High School: The U-32 High School and Middle School project produced a state-of-the-art

educational facility with 70,000sf of additions and 120,000sf of renovations. South Royalton School: Renovation and expansion Milton Herrick Avenue School: Extensive renovation and expansion Harwood Union School: Extensive renovation and expansion of 6-12 Learning Center. Johnson State College Library and Learning Center: Design and Construction of a new library and learning

center for Johnson State College. Woodbury State College: An addition to Woodbury College that included the library and technology lab. University of Vermont: Athletic Master Plan and renovation of historic building on Redstone Campus.

COMMUNITY BASED PROJECTS Ilsley Public Library, Middlebury, Vermont: Design of a major renovation and expansion—Currently

underway Jeudevine Memorial Library: Pre-development work currently underway Kellogg Hubbard Library, Montpelier, Vermont: Historical Renovation of the existing library and an addition to

include the children's library. Littleton Food Co-Op: Design and construction of a 9,500 s.f. expansion of the existing Co-Op building, opened

March, 2017 Montpelier Bio-Mass Energy Plant: Design and Construction of a unique City and State partnership of a bio-mass

energy plant. Vermont Food Bank: New construction of a 24,000 s.f. facility with office and kitchen space alongside high bay ware-

house space. Capitol District Masterplan: The CDMP is a true municipal consensus with a real and tangible physical response to

local, regional and state wide concerns. Brattleboro Co-Op Plaza: Design and construction of the Brattleboro Co-Op, additional office space, and an exterior

plaza

HISTORICAL RENOVATIONS & ADDITIONS Chandler Center for the Performing Arts, Randolph, Vermont: A local hub of entertainment, this project consisted of

renovating the existing historically significant building centrally located building. A contemporary “back of the house” addition significantly increased stage functionality.

Royalton Academy: Located on a premier spot in Royalton, this historic building built in 1807 was underutilized. All mechanical and electrical systems were replaced and the entire structure upgraded. An addition that included an elevator complimented the historic nature of the building and made the second floor accessible.

Justin Morrill Visitors Center: Re-creating of the original hose barn structure built by Justin Morrill in the 1800s. The building includes visitor services, exhibits, meeting spaces and a climate controlled archival storage of Justin Morrill’s private book collection.

NAMCO Block: Renovation of historic building into energy efficient mixed income apartments. The energy efficient measures saved 60,000 gallons of oil a year and the project received national recognition.

58 Barre Street Senior Center and Senior Housing: Complete historic renovation and a new addition that complimented the building in Montpelier’s Historic Downtown. Historically significant details lost over time were restored. The first floor houses the Montpelier Senior Center, and the upper floors, senior housing. This project received LEED Gold.

The U-32 High School and Middle School project in East Montpelier, Vermont, produced a state-of-the-art educational facility with a 70,000sf addition in coordination with 120,000sf of renovated spaces. As a whole, U-32 was a cost efficient combination of energy-wise construction, mechanical/data systems, programmatic organization, and educational philosophy, all melded together with sensitive architectural design. The High School and Middle School were set apart architecturally via a chain of multi-purpose public spaces. A courtyard at the main entry leads students to the primary administrative and support areas. A second ‘courtyard’ atrium acts as a circulation hub, connecting all primary hallways to the library, student support, the science laboratory and green house, and related classrooms. A third exterior courtyard leads students to the play fields and provides a backdrop to the middle school amphitheater, or sitting steps. Other improvements to the facility include a new gym, three new exterior playing fields, a renovated cafeteria, and upgrades to the weight room, auditorium, music spaces, classrooms and dance studio. This project in South Royalton, Vermont, involved a 14,000 sq ft addition to an existing gymnasium. The design includes an entrance connecting classrooms to the new gym, a fitness center, locker rooms, lab renovations, and extensive site circulation improvements, including designated bus and car drop-off lanes. The addition is near the street, creating a village presence while reinforcing the existing street wall. The turret corner-window is based on local historic buildings and attracts pedestrians to enter the site. The curved entry-canopy echoes the shape of the bus drop off and welcomes children with ‘open arms.’ The project was constructed under budget, which allowed the school to install a building-wide sprinkler system with the savings.

Additions and renovations to the Harwood Union School in Duxbury, Vermont, involved 112,600 square feet of existing building and 45,000 square feet of new construction. The total budget was $5.8 million. New construction for the high school and middle school included a library and computer room, classrooms, laboratories, a gallery and multi-purpose room, a music studio, an art room, a lecture hall, a student services wing, and significant landscape improvements. Today, the design offers a rich and varied arrangement of spaces that supports the educational philosophy of the school. Middle school class areas are organized for thematic teaching and learning with resource rooms introduced between grouped classrooms for utmost flexibility. Facades with large expanses of glass strengthen connections between the building and its surroundings and admit generous amounts of natural light. A new main entrance with a sweeping roof structure and pergola provides visitors and students with a sense of arrival, while a three-story vestibule to the south gives people coming from the parking lot a cheerful and dynamic side entry. The Senior High terrace with a sloped front yard and curved walkway, planters, benches, retaining walls and groves of trees ties the building to the site, and offers sunny places for students to gather.

An approximately thirty million dollar architectural/landscape and renovation project, the New Athletic Campus will upgrade the existing facilities to a state-of-the-art sports complex. Simultaneously, the athletic complex will be given a new sense of place, presence, and physical form, on campus. The complex includes an athletic events plaza, a student athlete success center, new artificial turf fields, and a complete upgrade of the existing athletic campus facilities. The master plan includes a multitude of improvements, some of which include a sunken outdoor stadium with artificial grass, lighting, press box, and an air-supported winter roof for winter, as well as an urban pedestrian walk, locker and storage facilities, an events-plaza, and a secondary artificial turf field. Additionally, an administrative building will be added to house a box office, as well as offices. Other athletic additions to the campus will consist of a new track, 6-8 tennis courts, several natural grass recreational fields, and a variety of landscape elements intended to support pedestrian connections and exterior spaces surrounding the Gutterson/Patrick Gymnasium.

St Johnsbury Academy teamed with a local developer to create a four story mixed use building in downtown St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The program provides 12 dormitory rooms for the school on Levels 2, 3, and 4, a space for St. Johnsbury Academy’s culinary classes and the relocated Hilltopper restaurant on Level 1, and a common room for students, a community banquet room for 150 people, and support spaces on Level 0. The total square footage for the occupied floors is approximately 32,000sf. In addition, the developer proposed to create a community park between the new dormitory and existing church. This is an important site since it is partially in the historic downtown area. This project would replace several buildings that had burned down and will revitalize a now empty lot. The design intends to be harmonious with the massing and character of the adjacent structures, while still being of the time. The café window and brick veneer wrap the corner to continue the character of Main Street along the parklett. The intent of the parklett is to have a small green space adjacent to the building for the town and occupants. An amphitheater connects Levels 0 and 1, so that the new banquet hall and parking can easily be accessed by Main Street. This also makes parking more convenient for the occupants of the building.
