15 April 2015 Regards ~ Kevin Dear Parents, Welcome back for Term 2, I hope you and your family enjoyed a relaxing time together during the recent vacation. Today the staff provided morning tea for Ms Jo Toussaint who is retiring from her position as Education Support Aide at Donburn Primary. Jo joined the team in September 2001 and she has supported many individual students during this time. Jo has been a wonderful asset to this school - her enthusiasm and her genuine concern for the welfare of others has been greatly appreciated by all members of the Donburn School Community. We will miss you Jo, but we wish you continued success in all that awaits you! Please note that we have cordoned off an area of the school oval and in the next few weeks we will have one of the large gum trees removed. There will be quite an amount of wood available for those people who enjoy an open fire! Yesterday we distributed to every family a copy of the “Special Religious Instruction-Parent Consent Form”. If you did not receive a form please contact the office as soon as possible because we need to have all forms back to school by Tuesday 21st April! Thankyou! You will be aware that Marg Hanna is currently on long service leave. Pauline Thwaites will be assisting us during Marg’s period of leave! Welcome Pauline! Next Thursday the 23 April, our School Captains and House Captains have the privilege to represent Donburn at the Schools ANZAC Day service, held at the Templestowe War Memorial. Dear Parents,

Welcome back for Term 2, I hope you and your family enjoyed a relaxing time together during the

recent vacation.

Today the staff provided morning tea for Ms Jo Toussaint who is retiring from her position as

Education Support Aide at Donburn Primary. Jo joined the team in September 2001 and she has

success in all that awaits you!

Please note that we have cordoned off an area of the school oval and in the next few weeks we will have one of the large

gum trees removed. There will be quite an amount of wood available for those people who enjoy an open fire!

Yesterday we distributed to every family a copy of the “Special Religious Instruction-Parent Consent Form”. If you did

History by Year 2T

The books were very heavy and the

pages in the books were very thick.

By Gilbert

They had battle planes called

Spitfire and Tigermoth. You

could tell what country the

plane is from because of the

symbol on the wings.

By Sophie We were able to learn about the life of people through ‘Jack’

and ‘Rosie’ sharing their life and reading letters they had

written to each other.

On Monday 13 April Harrison’s mum, Andrea, came to talk to our class

about what life was like for the people back in 1939-1945 (during World

War 2).

We learnt a lot and found out some very interesting facts.

I thought it was interesting that

people were only allowed to

eat a certain amount of food,

because they were on rations.

By Abby

The phones used

to have a circle to

dial the numbers.

It would have

taken a long time

to ring someone!

By Luke

History by Year 2T

We got to taste hard tack biscuits, bread and syrup

bread. Some people liked them, some people

didn’t.

The biscuits were really, really hard and didn't

have a lot of taste.

The irons were heavy and

you had to put a heat brick in

it to heat it up so you could

iron with it.

Men

earned on

average

$383 per

week.

All food was rationed, including meat, tea,

sugar, butter, cheese, fruit, milk, bread and

sweets. People were encouraged to grow their

own food, especially onions when the shortage

came.

They were only allowed 1 egg per week, but

when they came back safely from a mission they

got another one!

We would like to thank Andrea for teaching us all about the people during

World War 2. We thank you for giving up your time and making some

treats for us to taste.

The women didn't have as many jobs that they

could do as men. They could only do washing,

typing, switchboard, cooking and cleaning.

But when the war came they were doing

men’s jobs.

Swimming - Year 1

At Aquarena 1D worked in small groups

to improve our freestyle, torpedo,

backstroke and frog kick. We also learnt

how to enter the pool safely. Some of us

used life jackets in the deep end of the

pool. Sometimes we had to swim

through a hoop or fetch a toy from the

bottom of the pool. It was exciting!

We had lots of fun at

swimming. We learnt about

Water Safety and we got to

wear life jackets. Some of

the strokes we learnt were

Freestyle and Backstroke.

The Fun Day was the best

day because we played

games in the water! By 1R

1V just loved swimming. We worked

hard and really improved our

swimming techniques. The teachers

were very nice. We picked up slinky

toys from the bottom of the deep

pool and we learnt how to use life

jackets. We loved the fun day, and

the wobbly mat was awesome!

Swimming - Year 2

For the last 2 weeks of Term 1, the grade

1 and 2 students went swimming. Our

grade caught the bus during recess to

arrive for our lesson at 11.45am. Some

of the things we learnt were backstroke,

torpedo, bubble arm breathing and

survival skills. The swimming teachers

really helped us to improve our

swimming. The worst part of swimming

is getting dressed, especially getting on

our shoes and socks. By 2P

We learnt a lot of swimming

skills. Some of our favourites

were backstroke, freestyle,

torpedo, kneeling dive, survival

backstroke, swimming

underwater, corkscrew,

breaststroke and pin drop. The

swimming teachers are the best.

We love swimming.

By 2T

We all loved the swimming program. We

learnt lots of new strokes like

freestyle, survival backstroke and

breaststroke. It was great fun going in the

outside pool and wearing our clothes and

life jackets! The last day was a fun day

and we played fantastic games like

swimming through the seaweed tunnel.

To give you an idea of how stock is presented, here are some photo’s of the Christmas stall which was a great success. All stock is sourced through wholesalers and fundraising companies and is ordered in quantities so that there is a vast variety.
