Orange Shirt Day is about communities coming together in a spirit of reconciliation andhope for generations of children to come. All over Canada, activities are planned onSept. 30th of each year to provide awareness and education about residential schools.Since Sept. 30th falls on a Sunday this year, the Reconciliation Nipawin Committee hasorganized an event for the Friday before.
On Friday, Sept. 28th, the staff and students of Wagner Elementary have been invited tojoin community members, Cumberland College students, [P Miller, and some of theCPES students to attend a round dance. We are also extending this invitation out to allof our families to join us.
Our plan is to walk from Wagner to the open area beside Central Park School. Oncethere, an Elder will (bring greetings/have an opening prayer), the Mayor will bringgreetings, and then the drumming and round dance will begin.
The University of Alberta has put out a VouTube video explaining round dances calledRound Dance 101. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=626MhRI6aFQThe following are questions that are answered in the video:
A round dance is meant to bring people together to heal, acknowledge, honour, andcelebrate life to the fullest.
It does not matter what culture you are from. The round dance breaks all those barriersthat sometimes divide us by coming together and linking hands and dancing together.Everyone is invited.
The circle always moves in the same direction. It represents the movement of how theearth travels around the sun and movement is about healing. So when you’re moving inthat direction, you are healing.
The beat of the drums is like that of the heart. We acknowledge the heartbeat ofMother Earth, so that is what it sounds like.
It is perfectly acceptable to watch if you do not wish to participate.
Openfor Learning
When the dance is complete, everyone in attendance will be invited to have a piece ofbannock and some water (traditionally, people that were invited to a round dance werefed to honour and acknowledge them for coming) and then we will walk back to ourschool for lunch.
Friday, Sept. 28th is also school picture day for Wagner. Students are invited to bring anorange shirt to wear over top of their picture day clothing. Those that do not have anorange shirt will be invited to wear a sticker that looks like this:
