Dear PVI Families,
Hopefully you had a wonderful winter break and 2020 is off to a phenomenal start! On behalf of Pleasant Valley Intermediate School, we would like to take a moment to thank all of our families, students, staff, community members, and businesses that so generously donated to support those less fortunate during the holiday season. Thanks to the overwhelming support, numerous families were able to benefit from the generosity and their holidays were made a bit brighter.
As always, we are excited to share some highlights from the month of December. Many thanks to the PVI PTO for sponsoring the Holiday Shop for our students. This event is only possible thanks to our outstanding volunteers. Prior to the break, students had the opportunity to create ornaments that represented them for our Celebration Trees in the lobby. This was an optional activity, but many students chose to take part in this opportunity. It was a wonderful way to show the diversity among the students and staff here at PVI.
Progress reports were also sent home with students at the beginning of December. In addition, the grade level award assemblies were held for each team to recognize all of the hard work of our students. We continue to encourage all of our students to do their very best in their academic endeavors.
As we begin the month of January, there are numerous exciting events to look forward to. The Book Fair will be held from January 13th – 17th for students to attend. On Friday, January 10th, PVI’s PTO will sponsor our 5th Grade Meet your Friends Dance.
Each year, the time seems to pass by even faster; it is hard to believe that we are halfway through the school year. We are confident that the second half of the 2019-2020 school year will be phenomenal and that our students will continue to work hard in all areas of school. Your continued partnership and support is crucial and greatly appreciated. On behalf of PVI, Happy New Year and all the best for an outstanding 2020!
Thank you,
Todd Breiner Kendal Askins Tom Dudley

Counselor’s Corner
PVI is excited to announce that we have a new school counselor! We would like to welcome Ms. Kerilyn Klamerus. She previously worked in East Stroudsburg Area School District as an elementary school counselor and Stroudsburg Area School District as a junior high school counselor. Ms. Klamerus is looking forward to working with the PVI staff, students, and families to ensure student success. We are fortunate to now have four counselors at PVI. Ms. Romanisko is the 6th grade counselor, Ms. Moore is the 5th grade counselor, and Mrs. Below is the 4th grade counselor. Although Ms. Klamerus has not been assigned to a specific grade level, she is working directly with students in all grade levels in classrooms, small groups, and individually. Feel free to contact Ms. Klamerus as a resource. You can reach her at [email protected] or at (570) 402-1000 ext. 3012.
Career and Interests Research
The Pennsylvania Department of Education has mandated College and Career Readiness activities for Pre-K-12th grades. PVI is continually adding activities and lessons for students to begin the career exploration process. Each month one of the four school counselors visits your child’s classroom for a career lesson using the Xello computer program. In 6th grade, during the month of November, students took a learning style inventory. Three types of learning styles were presented: visual, auditory, and tactile. Through a series of questions, students discovered their strongest learning style(s), and received some tips that will be helpful to them in the classroom and at home. They also identified, on their Xello page, their skills and interests. During the month of December, sixth graders are working on matching their skills and interests to careers. They are taking a series of quizzes in the Xello program to determine what kind of tasks, work environments, and work situations they might enjoy. The computer then matches their skills, interests, and personality characteristics to careers. Personality characteristics discussed include: Thinkers, Builders, Creators, Persuaders, Organizers, and Helpers. Students are then given time to explore over 500 careers within the program, and save those that interest them to their Xello page.

During the remainder of this school year, the sixth grade students will be working on lessons regarding relating school subjects to the world of work, relating interests to chosen careers, decision making, and time management. In 4th and 5th grades, during the months of November and December, students worked on naming their individual interests and rated their various skills in their personal Xello accounts. As a class they discussed their top interests and skills and how those relate to possible career choices. During the remainder of this school year, 4th graders will work to complete a mission in the Xello program in order to learn more about skills and why they are useful. The mission will focus on the importance of taking the time to learn new skills, practicing to improve your skills, and matching skills to various jobs. Fifth graders will complete a mission in the Xello program focusing on learning and future success. The mission will focus on the importance of lifelong learning. Fifth graders will also identify careers of interest. Each student in grades 4-6 have an account in Xello. Ask your child to log-in to their Xello account from home and share with you what they have done so far. The website is xello.world/en/ and the official link title is Xello: College and Career Readiness Software that Inspires. Your child has their username and password on a sticker inside their agenda. If you have any questions about logging into the program or the material being covered, please contact the PVI School Counseling Office at (570) 402-1000 ext. 3011.

We would like to take a moment to recognize and thank our school board members. School board
members work diligently with district administrators to make sure that Pleasant Valley continues to be
an outstanding school district. They volunteer their time and work to develop and update board
policies. Board members attend a variety of Pleasant Valley School District activities, such as sporting
events, chorus and band concerts, plays, graduation, and much more. We look forward to a visit from
our board members at Pleasant Valley Intermediate for the current school year. Please join us in
recognizing the hard work, effort and dedication that the men and women serving as our school board
members contribute each and every day. We look forward to formally thanking the Board of Education
