StrathTaieriContext:

StrathTaieriCommunityTheStrathTaieriValleyismainlygivenovertofarming,especiallysheep,deer,caVleandsomegrain.TheMiddlemarchTownshiphasapopula=onofabout200andisservicedbyageneralstore,postalagency,hotel,CycleSurgery,TrailJourney,cafésandsomefarmrelatedagencies.Theareaisundergoinganumberofchangesinregardtofarming,tourismandholidayhousing,increasingthedemandforhousing,andreducingtheavailabilityofhousingstock.Thishashadaneffectonthenatureofthecommunityandnumberofchildreninthedistrict.

Thecommunityhasacoveredswimmingpoolandcommunityhallthatarewellusedbytheschool.Thereisastronginterestinspor=ngandleisureac=vi=es.Duetoourrela=vesizeofthecommunitylimitedspor=ngandleisureac=vi=escanbeaccessedwithinthecommunity,parentstraveltoaccesscompe==onorarangeofac=vi=eswithinwiderDunedin.

OurSchoolStrathTaieriisafullprimaryschool(Y0-8)employingfourteachersincludingateachingprincipal.Ancillarystaffincludeschoolsecretaryandsupportstaff.Weareadecile5schoolwithstableroll.StrathTaieriSchoolissituatedonHighway87inMiddlemarchandisrela=velyisolatedbeing65kmfromMosgieland84kmfromDunedin.

Theschoolwasfirstopenedin1880andhasalwaysbeenafocalpointinthecommunity.In1969itbecameafullprimaryandsincethenthearea’ssecondarystudentshaveeithertravelledtotheTaieriHighSchoolinMosgielorhaveaVendedboardingschool.MostboardersaVendschoolsinOamaruorDunedin.

TheschoolenjoysextensivegroundsandthedevelopmentoftheseisongoingfortheBoardofTrusteesandthecommunity.Allclassroomsontheschoolsiteareolderbutwellmaintained.TheMiddlemarchPlayGroupoccupiesaclassroomintheschoolandhasanestablishedfencedplaygroundonsite.ThePlayGroupisanextendedpartofourschoolcommunity.
