Message from the Principal

Hi Everyone

Transition Night - Why So Early? James Quilty is running a quick information session on transition for year 5 parents tonight in the staff room at 6.00pm. It is not really that early as the call for secondary school preferences happens very early in term two. Student Disco Thursday This Thursday is our whole school student disco. Organised by the Parent Club, this will be a free dress day for a gold coin donation. Choir to Tullamore Next Monday our choir heads to Tullamore Aged Care facility to entertain with a selection of songs from their lively repertoire. Mrs Sheppard and Miss Cheong have worked throughout the Shrek term to ensure the choir kept up its level of polish. As we have seen at assembly, performing is the reason to be in the choir. No doubt the kids will enjoy sharing their songs on the day. Enrolled? Another reminder to current parents that if you have a youngster intending to start school next year then now is the time to present your enrolment forms to the office. Arriving Late/Leaving Early? Here is an innovation that we hope you don’t need to use too often! There is a new iPad-like ‘kiosk’ where you enter your child’s name when arriving late and leaving early, and the system will do all the rest. All you need do is take a late/early leave card to the classroom. Visiting First Aid Another innovation is the electronic notification if your child visits the first aid room for a minor scrape. As the record of visit is entered into the system the ‘designated contact parent’ will receive an SMS notification detailing the visit. This replaces the green slip that had been sent home in the past. Note: If you are required to collect your child, you will still be called.

DVD Orders If you would like a DVD of our school production, please return your order form and $20 (cash or credit card details) to school as soon as possible. Late Arrivals/Early Leavers Our new Late Arrivals/Early Leavers kiosk has replaced the late arrivals sign-in book. It is working well! If you have any questions regarding the kiosk, please ask one of the office staff at the window and we will be happy to show you.

Sentral Parent Portal App is coming! In the coming few weeks, Montrose Primary School will be rolling out a new App that can help you connect with us. It is called the Sentral Parent Portal.

Montrose Primary School have been using Sentral software since 2015 to help manage attendance and reporting. Sentral also provide functionality that can help parents to communicate with and receive information from the school, called the Parent Portal. Using the portal, parents will be able to:

View reports online

View newsletters online

Advise the office of absences

Give permission for excursions, incursions, and camps

Advise the office of changes of address etc for your family

The system will roll out during Term 3 and it is expected all families will be online by Term 4. End of Year Reports for 2017 will not be printed and sent home, but will only be accessible by the portal. More information will be sent home soon – watch this space!

Sick Bay Notifications

We have also installed an electronic kiosk in the Sick Bay to assist us in managing children as they enter and leave sick bay. If your child visits the sick bay, you will now receive a text message notification. This notification will replace the green paper slips that were brought home by your children. Unless you are concerned, there is no need to contact the office if you receive a text message advising of a sick bay visit.

Please note: In the event of a more serious injury, or where we feel children need to be picked up, we will still call and speak to parents personally.

The sun was shining on Wednesday morning and from the canteen window we had a beautiful view of the school grounds in its full glory. Mrs Pedder does a magnificent job of keeping our grounds well maintained and last week they were looking a real treat. Please remind your children to respect the hard work Mrs Pedder puts in and ensure that they place all their rubbish in the bins provided to keep our school looking its best. Homemade pumpkin soup could be smelt cooking in the canteen during recess and the children who had ordered soup were very keen for lunch time to roll along. Bingo! Once again ALL soup cups were returned (with their lids). I am very impressed with the responsibility the children are taking to return their cups. With an extra helper on board we were flat out on both counter service times on Wednesday and although the sun had disappeared behind the clouds Moosies were still very popular. On Friday we had one of our busiest days for the last few weeks. With the production behind us and good health on the rebound, the canteen was inundated with lunch orders and counter service during recess and lunch was extremely busy.

LATE LUNCH ORDERS Late lunch orders are becoming more and more prevalent, recently with many orders appearing at recess and even on the lunch time bell. With hundreds of lunch orders to prepare on the day, it is imperative that ALL lunch orders be placed in the class room basket and delivered to the canteen shortly after classes commence. Food counting is conducted as soon as baskets arrive and late lunch orders often cause later problems and delays with food preparation and packing.

With this in mind, FROM NOW ON, all lunch orders received after 9.30am will be filled with a basic sandwich. Drinks and snacks will be provided as per original order but only a basic vegemite or cheese sandwich will be available as the main lunch item. PLEASE REMIND YOUR CHILDREN TO ENSURE THEY PLACE THEIR LUNCH ORDERS IN THE CLASSROOM BASKET AT THE COMMENCEMENT OF CLASS. Canteen Volunteeer Thank you A BIG thank you to Bronwyn Reimers and Claire Seymour for helping in the canteen on Wednesday. Also a BIG thanks to Ann Allen, Gemma Heemskerk and Claire Seymour for helping in the canteen on Friday. What can I buy? Beef lasagne is available at a cost of $3.90 or $4.80 for the gluten free option. Amanda

What is it?

Excellence is giving your absolute best to any task that you do.

When you practise excellence, you are not

trying to be better than anyone else, just the very best that you can be.

The Key for Success in Term 3 is Persistence. The habits of mind that go with the Persistence Key are: Working Tough, Giving 100% effort and Believing I can do it when things get tough.

Our YCDI Award winners for this week are:

Evie M, PC: This Prep C student brings a smile and a ‘never give up’ attitude to school each day. She completes her work to an immaculate standard and persists through challenges that arise. Never have I seen someone to colour in so solid, never leaving a trace of a white space. This student effectively uses the THRASS chart to spell and sound out unknown words in her writing and enjoys helping others in her tracks. She also excels in performing. This student enjoys sharing songs with the grade and often recreates scenes from books we have read with expression and humour. What would I do without you ‘memory Queen’. Congratulations Evie M from Prep.C.

Finn W, PP: This champion Prep student shows the value of persistence and resilience in all that he does. He always tries his very best no matter how challenging a learning task may be. He has a positive ‘can do’ attitude, which inspires us all. He is also kind, thoughtful and encourages his peers when they need support. He never gives up and he never gives in, he works tough all day, every day. Finn W – you are a star and we are very proud of you!

Taig B, 4W: This student consistently strives to achieve his best in all areas of his learning despite distractions that may be going on around him. He happily takes on any advice or instructions with enthusiasm and an attitude of self-improvement. He continues to reap the rewards of this ‘I can do it’ attitude. When things get difficult he takes on board suggested hints or strategies, never getting overwhelmed by the task.

T is for always trying A is for a great attitude I is for being an interested student G is for giving your best.

Congratulations on all you have achieved so far this year Taig B, you set a great example for those around you.

Lauren W, 3/4G: We wanted to share our thoughts on our friend Lauren who always looks on the bright side of things. She’s really tough and definitely resilient and deserves the Bounce Back Award.

She recently dropped a brick on her big toe and she didn’t even cry and never complains about it, even though her toenail is coming off and it would have really hurt! So here’s a poem that we will read about her because of how strong and brave she is! To our friend Lauren!

Sing me a song Of courage and bravery Backbone and boldness And purpose and grit

Pluck and persistence And going the distance Lauren’s a legend And just doesn’t quit!
