The Board members expressed their thankfulness for the gifts and your work through the following notes: Thank you all so much for the wonderful gifts! I went home and put all of the gifts on our bed and had the kids take turns choosing little parts that they wanted to enjoy. Even with 6 kids at home, there was something for everyone! • The Waynesville High School Interact Club assembled and delivered goody bags for the Genesis House during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. “We want to give back to our local charities,” says Jon Moore, president of the WHS Interact Club. Students delivered feminine products, baby wipes, diapers and other hygiene items to help Genesis residents. They also went to the Life Care Center and visited with leaders there about forming a partnership to benefit residents. Interact is Rotary’s service club for youth ages 12 to 18. Interact students from Waynesville Middle School spent their Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service (Jan. 16) going out into the community to collect sponsorships and donations for their Third Annual Race for the Ribbons. Race proceeds benefit Waynesville students by providing support to the Snack in a Pack program, Red Ribbon Week (anti-drug) activities, and childhood health needs in the middle school. WMDS’s Interact Club works on various service learning and service projects throughout the year and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pulaski County.

  • Virginia Fulmer-Rehm and Debra Stuckenschneider were named the Teachers of the Quarter through the Project Teach Recognition Program sponsored by Sellers-Sexton. Eileen McWilliams of Sellers-Sexton presented them with a $100 stipend during the December Waynesville R-VI Board of Education meeting. Sellers-Sexton, which recognizes teachers who have designed creative classroom learning projects, selected Fulmer-Rehm and Stuckenschneider for their project, “Find the ‘U’ in Communities Series – Operation: Dog Shelter.” Students in the hospitality careers program at the Waynesville Career Center assisted the animal shelter with the cleaning of dog cages, washing and folding linens, feeding and watering the dogs and exercising the animals. They also made dog biscuits and dog toys for the dogs.

On Dec. 19, the Sixth Grade Center cafeteria team held the final drawing for the Breakfast Challenge Competition being conducted for all sixth grade students. The grand prize winner was Maverick Sadler. The breakfast challenge provided students the opportunity to enter their name into a monthly prize drawing each time they ate breakfast at the WSGC. From September to December, 10 winners were selected each month to receive a gift bag. The names of the 10 monthly winners were then placed into the final competition drawing for an iPod.

Thayer Elementary hosted a Bedtime Stories Night for kindergarten and first grade students on Jan. 17. While dressed in pajamas, students rotated through stations then met in the gym to participate in “Bedtime Yoga” before going home.
