Division Priorities 2018-2022

Foster growth and success for every student by supporting their journey from early learning through high school completion and beyond.Provide welcoming, high quality learning and working environments.Enhance public education through communication, engagement and partnerships.

Based on the three SMART goals that were established for 2020-2021, report on the results you achieved (with evidence, including referencing the school's Alberta EducationAssurance Measure results (formerly the Accountability Pillar results) and describe how achievement of the goal supports the above Division Priorities that were in effect when thegoal was set.

By June 2021, all students will show growth in reading, writing and mathematics as measured by their guided reading levels, HLAT writing achievement and MIPI scores.

100% of our students who regularly attended school showed growth in their reading, writing and mathematics as measured by their guided reading levels, HLAT writingachievement and MIPI scores. In grades 1-6, all students were instructed in guided reading/reader's workshop, writer's workshop, and Jump Math. Student attendance ratesimpacted achievement. We worked hard to encourage students to come to school; however, there were many families dealing with personal trauma and they were not able toregularly attend in-person or online.

By June 2021, 100% of Steinhauer teachers will engage in meaningful collaboration that demonstrates increased capacity to support teaching and learning as measured bystaff reflective feedback, cohort survey, shared planning and assessments, Accountability Pillar results and Division Survey.

Results Achieved:Our teachers participated in a catchment cohort group and the survey indicated that 94% of teachers felt this collaboration had a positive impact on their professional practice. Each grade level selected what was important for them and they appreciated the autonomy given to each grade grouping to determine their professional needs. There was amyriad of sharing such as online teaching strategies, looking at assessments, celebrations of learning and parent-teacher interviews, and progress reporting support, inquirybased learning, guided reading practices, and developing specific units together. This was the third year that this catchment cohort group worked together. These groupsprovided support to its members during a very challenging and difficult year. Steinhauer teachers participated in grade level collaboration where they developed commonquarterly unit plans using the Division's quarterly scope and sequence.

By June 2021, Steinhauer School will continue to grow as a positive, caring community focused on mental health support and training for students, families and staff asmeasured by increased communication and access to mental health resources and community supports; positive Division Survey and Accountability Pillar results; and mentalhealth referrals being made to SLS agencies.

Results Achieved:The Harry Ainlay Mental Health Capacity Building Wellness Coach works out of Steinhauer School. Our coach, Melanie Morrison, was able to offer sessions to ourclassrooms and teachers including brain smoothies, mindfulness moments, a girls friendship group, and find your fun day. The Harry Ainlay Wellness Coach delivered thePsychological First Aid in a Pandemic training course to the entire Steinhauer staff. We appreciated having the coach at our school as a resource to our teachers. 97% ofstudents and 80% of staff surveyed responded that they were doing well during the 2020-2021 school year. 88% of students stated they can get help from someone at schoolif they are having problems not related to learning. Through our Steinhauer School Council, Coach Melanie presented "Kids Have Stress Too" and 100% of the parents whoattended stated  they learned some practical strategies to use with their children. They also agreed that the presentation gave them a new understanding of what their childrenwere demonstrating through their behaviours.

What were the biggest challenges encountered in 2020/21?  Pivoting teaching between in-person and on-line schooling was extremely taxing for our families and staff. This impacted continuity of student learning as some families wereless engaged with on-line schooling. We were not able to easily connect and engage with our online students as they were taught and administered by staff in other schools.Coordinating online IPPs and progress reports was challenging as we did not know the students who were assigned to Steinhauer. There were varying degrees of stress andtrauma experienced by staff, students, and families. There continued to be a steep learning curve in discovering various technological platforms to engage students, staff, andfamilies. We missed the personal connection with our families. Not having our families in the school on a regular basis made it difficult to maintain close working relationships. There were many adapations to the delivery of instruction due to covid protocols. Our students missed playing with their friends from other classes during recess. Staff wererequired to take additional time away from instruction to adhere to cleaning protocols i.e. use of physical education equipment and hand washing/sanitizing routines. Teachersneeded to adjust their year plans and pacing to fit within the quarterly system. This took additional time to plan and implement. The Music curriculum had to be adapted withcurricular objectives removed from school, mainly singing. Students lost a year of vocal development and the joy of singing. As the Music room was not used, students alsolost a year of instrument playing. Without the concrete experiences of the program, the theoretical elements of the curriculum were difficult to teach and for students tocomprehend. Our Steinhauer family also missed traditional performing events such as the Winter Concert and monthly assemblies which engage families. Extra curricularopportunities were missed. The staff at Steinhauer are incredibly supportive of one another and it was very difficult to limit the amount of time and space we could interact inperson with one another. Not being able to connect in the same way for staff meetings, collaborative planning time, and health breaks made the experience feel isolating andlonely. Finally, the amount of information and changes in processes and protocols were fatiguing.

What are the implications from 2020/21 that will impact your current year plan?Staff have learned a lot about technology and are integrating it with greater ease within their classroom. We have students who have not been in school for over 18 monthsand for primary grade students this is a huge impact. We have grade two students who have not been in school since March of their kindergarten year. The level ofadjustment is tremendous, additionally, some of these students did not participate consistently in home education/online programs. Throughout our school, we have manystudents who are below grade level. The level of learning loss is tremendous and for many of our students they require additonal support in order to catch up. As a result ofthe learning loss, our grade level teaching teams are creating common assessments that align with curriculum which will provide opportunities for collaboration and theconsistent use of best practices. Programming for the Music curriculum has to be altered to suit the reality of the last two years of instruction.Once again, the constantchanges in health and safety protocols continue to create a heightened sense of stress for teachers, students, and families. It is imperative that we maintain goodcommunication with our partners.
