Tyler Junior College strives to offer a quality and accessible higher education to all who seek it. The College maintains affordable tuition and fees, while the TJC Foundation develops programs for financial support that encourage broad student participation.

With Tyler Junior College experiencing the highest enrollment in its more than 80 year history, and over 50 percent of the College’s students requiring financial aid, scholarships are a top priority. Each year, more than one thousand scholarships are awarded at TJC totaling almost $1.9 million in funding. With the student population nearing 12,000, the number of qualified applicants far exceeds the number of available scholarships. Hundreds of deserving individuals do not receive scholarship assistance annually.

TJC and its students benefit from privately underwritten scholarships through the Tyler Junior College Foundation. Foundation scholarships help the College keep the higher education door open for students struggling to meet their financial needs. Scholarships also free students from time-intensive jobs, which permit them to fully benefit from TJC’s comprehensive collegiate experience. Plus, generous scholarships attract the best and brightest to Tyler Junior College, since academically talented students receive scholarship offers from many colleges and universities.

Please consider the gift of education and review this brochure. There are numerous benefits of TJC Foundation scholarships for students and you. You can make a difference in the life of a Tyler Junior College student with your endowed or annual scholarship.

Is a charitable gift to establish a scholarship with the TJC Foundation tax deductible?Yes, the Tyler Junior College Foundation is a not-for-profit organization and has 501 c (3) tax-exempt status. All charitable contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible commensurate with the donor’s individual tax liability.

What does “endowing a scholarship” mean?A contributor gives a minimum contribution of $10,000 to the TJC Foundation endowment. The contribution is invested and a portion of the interest earned is distributed annually to fund the scholarship award. The original donation (often referred to as the principal) remains part of the Foundation’s endowment in perpetuity. After the scholarship has been awarded, any remaining interest is used to grow the scholarship endowment’s principal.

How can the endowed scholarship be funded?Funding occurs through a contribution of cash, securities, real estate, corporate matching gifts or through a pledge of up to five years. Scholarships may also be endowed through an estate gift such as a bequest, trust or other beneficial planned giving instrument.

Is there a contractual agreement?Yes, an endowed scholarship agreement is established in consultation with TJC Foundation staff. It contains pertinent information such as the scholarship name. Suggested naming options include your name, an individual you wish to honor or memorialize, or an organization you wish to honor. Other information within the agreement includes specific terms and conditions relating to the scholarship award and the Foundation’s stewardship commitment.

However, if a donor prefers to remain anonymous, the request will be honored.

What does “annual scholarship” mean?A contributor gives a yearly contribution, at any level, to the Tyler Junior College Foundation. Funding occurs through a gift of cash, securities or corporate matching gifts. A donor may name an annual scholarship, if giving $1,000 or more to participate in the Promises to Keep Scholarship program.

How soon will the annual scholarship be awarded once funded?Annual scholarship awards are distributed the fall semester following the receipt of the gift unless otherwise specified by the donor.

Who determines how annual scholarship recipients are selected? The contributor, in consultation with TJC Foundation staff, establishes the selection criteria for the annual scholarship. The Tyler Junior College Scholarship Committee chooses the recipient each year based on the criteria.

Does the TJC Foundation inform a contributor about the status of the annual scholarship?Yes, the Foundation will inform a contributor once the scholarship is awarded, including a personal thank-you note from the student recipient. Contributors who elect to participate in the Promises to Keep Scholarship program, with a gift of $1,000 or more, have the opportunity to visit with the student recipient at a yearly scholarship luncheon.

Are contributions to annual scholarships publicized?Yes, a contributor is recognized in the yearly Tyler Junior College Report to the Community, if giving $100 or more to fund an annual scholarship. However, if a donor prefers to remain anonymous, the request will be honored.

How soon will the scholarship be awarded following the establishment of the endowment?Scholarship awards are generally distributed the fall semester after the endowed scholarship is fully funded for one year. During this time, earnings accumulate, which ensure that the desired scholarship award will be ready for distribution. The contributor may elect to award the scholarship earlier with a separate gift equivalent to the desired award.

Who determines how endowed scholarship recipients are selected? The contributor, in consultation with TJC Foundation staff, determines how recipients are selected. The selection criteria are incorporated into the written agreement, and the Tyler Junior College Scholarship Committee annually chooses recipients based on the criteria. Generally, a student retains a scholarship for two years of academic study at TJC, as long as the individual continues to meet the criteria within the endowed scholarship agreement.

Does the TJC Foundation periodically inform a contributor about the status of the endowed scholarship?Yes, the Foundation is committed to stewarding endowed scholarship gifts. Each year, the contributor will initially receive a personal thank-you note from the student receiving the scholarship award. During the fall, the donor will have the opportunity to visit with the student recipient at the yearly scholarship luncheon. Later in the spring, the contributor will receive a report indicating the endowed scholarship’s earnings, as well as follow up information about the student receiving the award. Some established endowed scholarship programs at TJC provide additional opportunities to connect with student recipients.

Are endowed scholarships publicized?Yes, if the contributor agrees. Depending on the type of endowed scholarship, it can be featured in college publications and can inspire other friends and alumni of TJC to make a similar commitment.

LEGACY SCHOLARSHIPTyler Junior College has a legacy of offering extensive student life programs like no other institution of higher education at the two-year level. These extracurricular groups encourage social, intellectual, emotional and physical development, while distinguishing TJC by winning competitive honors at the state, national and international levels and serving as goodwill ambassadors.

The College has previously provided scholarships to these groups through “performance grants.” With a continuing decline in state funding, Tyler Junior College must have an additional resource to offer financial assistance. The Legacy Scholarship program supports TJC students who benefit from the College’s Promise Number Two - a vibrant student life.

Legacy recipients must participate in one of more than 20 TJC performing groups. These enriching programs include an over 200-member marching band, choral groups, a nationally honored competitive speech program, an active student government and the world-famous Apache Belles precision dance team.

The College strives to honor this commitment, which includes developing educational programming that serves outstanding East Texas students. The Top Ten Scholarship program was designed to encourage academically talented students, from the College’s service area, to attend TJC.

Tyler Junior College strives to keep the best and brightest in East Texas. DEAN’S SCHOLARSHIPTyler Junior College offers a comprehensive collegiate experience to honor its Three Promises – a quality education, a vibrant student life and community service. The Dean’s Scholarship program was designed to attract well-rounded, achieving students to TJC. Established in 1983, the program is the College’s oldest endowment initiative still accepting scholarships.

Recipients of a Dean’s Scholarship must demonstrate excellence through strong academic performance in high school and standardized college entrance exams. Dean’s Scholars must also prove leadership capabilities and a commitment to community service through extracurricular activities. ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP

donor brochure #3.indd 10 10/14/2010 2:13:46 PM

Annual scholarships provide crucial financial assistance to TJC students. With a yearly gift to the Tyler Junior College Foundation, a contributor can establish an annual scholarship and, working collaboratively with the Foundation staff, can specify how the funds should be awarded. With an accessible higher education made possible through the College’s affordable tuition and fees, a gift of $250 or $500 each year provides needed assistance to a TJC student. However, the TJC Foundation’s growing Promises to Keep Scholarship program offers generous annual funding to students across all areas of study to ensure that they can achieve their higher education goals at Tyler Junior College.

PROMISES TO KEEP SCHOLARSHIPDuring the recent economic downturn, the Foundation’s Promises to Keep Scholarship program was developed to ensure that Tyler Junior College can continue to honor its Three Promises with increasing student enrollment and decreasing financial resources. Following the national community college trend, TJC continues to grow as many students turn to the College as their higher education life line during challenging times.

Since more than 50 percent of Tyler Junior College students require financial assistance, friends of the College responded and helped to grow the TJC Foundation’s annual scholarships through the Promises program. With the average full time student paying less than $2,000 in yearly tuition and fees, a $1,000 Promises to Keep Scholarship can provide significant assistance and make it possible for a student to complete their higher education at TJC.

Opportunities and BenefitsPromises to Keep Scholarships help Tyler Junior College annually meet the increasing educational needs of a growing student body.

• Your $1,000 yearly gift will establish a Promises to Keep Scholarship in your name or the name of an individual or organization that you wish to honor or memorialize.

• You may develop criteria for selecting your annual scholarship recipients in consultation with TJC Foundation staff, such as area of study.

• You may choose to fund your Promises Scholarship with a yearly contribution of cash, securities or corporate matching gifts.

• Your Promises Scholarship will be awarded the fall semester after your initial gift has been received.

• You will have the opportunity to meet and visit with your student recipients each year at a special event.
