8 Create Real Impact Scholarship

Open only to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia between the ages of 14 and 22 years. Entrants must be enrolled as full-time students in an accredited educational institution (secondary [middle/high] school, trade school, college, or university). How to Enter: Create an original work showcasing your idea for a SOLUTION or STRATEGY to fix the very real problem of reckless and distracted driving. Note: The focus of this contest are solutions to the problem of driving distractions such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, applying makeup, showing off, etc. behind the wheel.

While extremely dangerous and highly illegal, drinking and driving/impaired driving is NOT the focus of this contest.

Entries involving drinking and driving/impaired driving WILL NOT be accepted. Please use professional language. Entries with profane language WILL NOT be accepted.

Carson Scholarships are awarded to students in grades 4-11 who exemplify academic excellence and humanitarian qualities. An interested student must be nominated by an educator at his or her school to be able to compete for a Carson Scholarship. Only one student from each school is able to apply, ensuring that each nominee epitomizes academic excellence. Carson Scholars must have:

(1) a minimum GPA of 3.75 and (2) display humanitarian qualities through community service. They are looking for students who participate in community service above and beyond what is required in school. Scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of: (1) academic achievement and (2) humanitarian qualities, without regard to financial need, ethnicity, creed or religion. 30 Friends of Gumbo Limbo’s Gordon Gilbert Scholarship

Candidate must be a 2018 graduating senior who intends to pursue a college degree in a biological, natural science, or other marine-related field deemed relevant to the mission of Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.

Candidates may self-nominate or may be nominated by a guidance counselor or science teacher, but MUST submit a letter of recommendation by a science teacher or guidance counselor.

A minimum 3.2 GPA overall, and minimum 3.5GPA in science courses completed is required. Candidates will be evaluated on grade point average; honors point average, academic curriculum, extra-curricular activities, personal reference, a brief essay, and a short interview that will be held on a date between March & April 2018.

The scholarship recipient must provide 40 volunteer hours at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center during the period from April 1 to August 30, 2018 or, for Charles N. Kurucz recipients, complete an agreed upon alternative project.

32 UCT Heaston Scholarship

Must be a H/S senior. A major criterion for this scholarship is that applicants show evidence of hard work and overcoming obstacles to achieve their goals. Requires evidence of commitment to community service. Top consideration will be given to students wishing to pursue an education degree in order to teach special needs students, but applicants entering other degree programs are encouraged to apply. Applications must include: (1) a personal narrative; (2) 3 letters of recommendation, (3) an official transcript, and (4) proof of college acceptance to be submitted upon receipt from the university/college.
