Scholarship is to be given to the grade 12 student with the highest average determined by
the average of that student’s highest five Alberta Diploma Examination Marks. This
average is calculated using the government EXAM MARK ONLY, not the combined
average mark of the school based and diploma exam mark.
Procedure requires that the average only be the top 5 diploma exam marks for the student

1. The Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship – this is a non-competitive
national award given to applicants based on their grade 10, grade 11, and/or grade 12 marks
up to a value of $2500.

This is the site for the Northern Alberta Development Council (NADC) Bursaries Program. Its
aim is to assist students living in Northern Alberta cover costs for post-secondary studies and any
related practicums they may have. It includes:
NADC bursary – for final 2 years of studies, up to $12 000
FNMI bursary – for FNMI studies who are willing to return to work in Northern Alberta
after their studies are complete, up to $10 000
Medical/Dentistry bursary – for students in Medical/Dental programs who are willing to
return to work in Northern Alberta after their studies are complete, up to $12 000
Pharmacy bursary – for students in Pharmacy programs who are willing to return to work
in Northern Alberta after their studies are complete, up to $12 000
Nurse Practitioner bursary – for students in a Nurse Practitioner program who are willing
to return to work in Northern Alberta after their studies are complete, up to $18 000
Health Care Practicum bursary – for students completing a practicum in a northern
community, to help cover costs, up to $2500
Student Teacher bursary – for students in their last 2 years of an Education degree to
cover costs of their two practicums, up to $8000 per year, as long as they are willing to
complete them in northern communities and then return to that community after
graduation
Veterinary Student bursary – for students in a Veterinary program who are willing to
return to work in Northern Alberta after their studies are complete, up to $12 000

The website for Apprenticeship and Industry Training has a tab at the top called, “Financial
Assistance.” By clicking on it, students are brought to a page that covers a) Grants, loans, and tax
benefits, b) Employment Insurance, and c) Scholarships.
By clicking on “Scholarships”, you’ll see four categories:
1. RAP/CTS scholarships – $1000 each for up to 500 Alberta students
2. Pre-Apprentice scholarships – to encourage students to complete their apprenticeship
training, $1000 each for up to 11 Alberta students
3. Apprentice and Occupational Trainee scholarships – for students who have registered as
an Alberta apprentice, $1000 each for almost 400 Alberta students
4. World Skills Legacy Scholarship – for students competing in Skills. There are 2 awards
of $500 and 1 award of $9000. No application necessary.
5. At the bottom of the page you’ll also see a link to their “Scholarship Information
Booklet” that has additional awards.

1. Advancing Futures Bursary – for students in care who are wishing to pursue post-
secondary education and transition out of care.
2. Metis & Non-Status Indian Bursary Program - for Metis and Non-Status Indian students
who are pursuing a diploma or degree in the Social Services field. This includes but is not
limited to social work, counseling, psychology, criminology, anthropology, human
ecology, community rehabilitation, and addictions.

Joseph Catholic High School get to submit one nominee each year. To be considered for the
nomination, students must submit a 1-page, typed essay describing why they are worthy of this
award. Essays are to be given to Ms. Martin in Student Services on or before May 15th of your
grade 12 year to be considered. A committee will meet to discuss each application and then
submit their nomination.
