2 008 has been a pivotal year in the world. From the Beijing Olympic to food
scarce; from the immense greed in the financial melt down to the economic
crisis; from the shocking attack in Mumbai to the unacceptable investment scam;
there is no decoupling from whatever happen in the world, all the more obvious when
we realised that the event of financial melt down infects the rest of the world,
Singapore is no exception with her in recession now.
The events in 2008 happened quickly and it seems so yesterday; we probably wish
that all these did not take place. The brutal economic downturn had an impact on us.
We faced a number of challenges that tested our people’s commitment and fortitude.
Our previous company program new2 has successfully enfolded whereby, we have

O n 28 January 2009 at Rueil-Malmaison, France, Schneider Electric's executive management announced the Group’s strategic ambition and operational priorities under the new One company program for the period 2009 – 2011, to the investor community.
Success of the new² program (2005-2008)The success of the previous company program new² demonstrated the ability of Schneider Electric to drive changes. Based on 2008 unaudited results, the Group beat all financial targets set for 2005-2008 with average annual organic growth of 10% (including 6.6% for 2008), EBITA margin of 15.0% (achieved in 2008), ROCE up 2 points and dividend payout of 50%.
With new², Schneider Electric has also transformed into the global specialist in energy management with market leadership and the most comprehensive and integrated portfolio. The Group is now in a strong position to capture opportunities arising from the growing concern on the energy challenges facing our planet.
One company program: two fundamentals and three transformations“We see favorable long term market trends at work in our business environment. Customer satisfaction and people development remain the key fundamentals of Schneider Electric. We aim to build on them to pursue the strategic transformation of the company. One, our new company program, set forth the strategic initiatives for making us even more unique in the market place: become One solution provider, give priority One to new economies, while simplifying our processes to act as One global company”, comments Jean-Pascal Tricoire, President and CEO.
The three major initiatives of the program were presented by the management of Schneider Electric during the meeting:
• One solution provider: Schneider Electric will accelerate its drive to address end-user needs of
customised solutions with strong energy efficiency benefits, thereby capturing a bigger part of the value chain. The Group will leverage its integrated portfolio of businesses by promoting a common architecture (EcoStruXure®) and adapting its organisation to align with end-user segmentation.
• One leader in new economies: It aims to further boost its global footprint by reinforcing its presence in new economies as drivers for long term growth and cost competitiveness. Schneider Electric will step up local R&D and marketing promotion to better fit these markets’ specificities. On the industrial side, the benefits of local sourcing and manufacturing will be continued.
• One global company: Simplification is a pre-requisite for many of the Group’s strategic ambitions. It will be achieved through two levers:
• Simplification of support functions: designing one simple way of doing business, notably in its Finance, HR, Marketing and Sales organisations, is expected to generate structural savings of ¤ 600 million per annum by 2011.
• Industrial productivity: building on its strong track record, the Group aims at further boosting productivity in its supply chain leading to gross cumulative savings of ¤ 600 million to ¤ 800M over 3 years.
These initiatives are designed to enhance the group’s profile across a normal business cycle with organic growth of GDP + 3 points and EBITA margin potential of 13% to 16%.
Working towards long term sustainable growth and profitabilityThe management is confident that Schneider Electric will emerge from the One Program as a reference global player in energy management and as a lean company generating a high level of business performance and profitability.

Schneider Electric and Philips launched building control inter-operability vision within HOMES programme
O n 13 February 2009, Schneider Electric and Philips launched a new vision for inter-operability in home automation and building control at the ZigBee Alliance’s European Smart Energy Forum in Dublin, Ireland.
It was a first demonstration from the HOMES programme, a European industry collaboration and it showcased the programme’s future technology development platform.
As part of the launched, Schneider Electric and Philips demonstrated innovative multi-vendor system components operating seamlessly in ZigBee wireless networks.
The demonstrations were targeted at energy suppliers and infrastructure installers. Highlights included:
• Intelligent energy efficiency platform A new platform that allows end-users and third parties to manage systems both locally and remotely. It enables new task automation and management solutions to reduce power consumption and increase user convenience. It will allow users to see how energy could be used in a smarter way to promote even greater savings.
• Combined power line / ZigBee wireless network By combining power line technology with ZigBee wireless solutions, power lines can be easily and efficiently reused for new services.
• World’s first self-powered ZigBee-based wireless switches No wires and no batteries, self-powered ZigBee based switches will enable more flexible and more efficient solutions that need less maintenance.
The innovations demonstrated using ZigBee wireless technology as it is the only open standard that enables true system inter-operability and multi-sourcing for sensors and control applications in home / building network.
“Schneider Electric as the worldwide leader of energy management, needs combination of innovations and open standards such as ZigBee to create new products and infrastructures to build solutions meeting the expectations for energy efficient smart homes and buildings,“ said Eric Pilaud, Executive VP Strategy, Customers & Technology, Schneider Electric. “Energy saving and cleaner generation are the best answers to the challenges our planet is facing and Schneider Electric is committed to helping individuals and organisations to make the most of their energy”.
“Philips wants to be on the forefront shaping the landscape, by developing one single solution thatprovides a clear standard for all parties involved. We see that markets cannot develop in an optimalway, due to various proprietary technologies instead of one single solution. Having a standard as ZigBee accelerates market development and gives numerous players the opportunity to demonstrate innovative and more advanced applications,” added Jan Denneman, Philips VP Sustainability & Industry Standards.
The HOMES programmeThe HOMES programme aims to equip each building with solutions to achieve the best energy performance. Officially green-lighted by the European Commission, it started in September 2008 and brings together 13 industrial and research partners. It is part-funded by OSEO.

Energy Efficiency
O n 27 January 2009, Schneider Electric participated in the Global launch of CISCO’s EnergyWise product line in Barcelona, Spain, at CISCO’s annual “Networkers” user conference.
To support the launch, Senior Vice President ofBuilding Automation BU Strategy, Jean-Yves Blanc attended a regional press conference and customer dinner alongside CISCO’s executive team.
At the press conference, Jean-Yves Blanc said: “Our customers want to be focused on their core business and manage the rest in a simple and cost effective way. As energy is at the top of their agenda, we help them manage all aspects of their energy in an integrated way, using the most simple path: Internet Protocol. That is what EnergyWise is about. We are extremely pleased to team with CISCO, the global leader in Networking, on this initiative for the mutual benefit of our customers. This is truly IP convergence at its highest level and Schneider Electric is pleased that CISCO sought our expertise as the leader in energy efficiency in Buildings, Infrastructures and Industrial processes.”
What is CISCO EnergyWise?CISCO EnergyWise is innovative software available on Catalyst Switches that will proactively measure, report and manage the energy consumption of all devices connected to the network. Initially, CISCO EnergyWise will be focused on IP-devices and, in the future, on any non-IP, non-CISCO device that an organisation has connected to the network (e.g., elevators, lights, PCs, laptops).
How does a customer deploy CISCO EnergyWise?EnergyWise is available via a free CISCO IOS software upgrade to Catalyst switching customers. For integration with third-party devices, customers must purchase additional licenses for device-specific EnergyWise client software such as APC by Schneider Electric’s InfraStruXure Central.
What industry solutions partners did CISCO announce at its January 27 press conference?CISCO announced Schneider Electric (building automation), Verdiem (PC Power Management), and SolarWinds (Network Management). Schneider Electric is pleased that CISCO called upon us for our expertise in building automation.
What type of joint development work are we doing with CISCO?We are currently looking at several integrations with CISCO that will help customers perform energy management over the Network. Schneider Electric will partner with CISCO to provide a more efficient and green Networking infrastructure for buildings, data centres and industrial processes. We plan to work on integrating third party products and solutions with EnergyWise. We will help CISCO integrate a wide variety of IP-enabled devices and develop solutions to manage energy across the platform.
When will our integrations with EnergyWise be completed? We hope to have initial integrations ready for the end of June 2009. For the longer term, we are exploring a vision of more robust integrations to provide increased energy efficiencies to our mutual customers in the markets we serve.

W hat is Energy Efficiency? It refers to products or systems using less energy to do the same or better job than conventional products or systems.
Energy Efficiency saves energy, saves money on utility bills and helps protect the environment by reducing the amount of electricity that needs to be generated.
Schneider Electric recognised this forecasted growthin electricity demand. As a result, we have created an extensive product portfolio, offering energy efficient electrical solutions.
Energy management + user-friendly + flexibility + integration = C-Bus
Our flagship product for the commercial sector is the C-Bus control and management system. It provides intelligent lighting control and superior energy management solutions, with simplicity and flexibility to adapt to future changes.
Schneider Link March 2009 l 09
Energy Efficiency
The future of lighting controlUnlike traditional wiring, all of the controlled lights and electrical devices on a C-Bus system are ‘networked’ together, which means they interact and operate within preset parameters or based on facts such as time of day, light level, occupancy and temperature.
Minimising overheads through efficient use of energy is now an important part of maximising profits in any business. C-Bus offers a platform to create a true integrated building solution with products such as occupancy detectors, ambient light sensors, temperature control and variable lighting levels to maximise the efficiency of commercial environments. It maximises the returns on investment, providing substantial energy savings up to 30% through reduced energy consumption and maintenance.
With the convergence of technologies, the importance of communication between all your non essential and essential services has never become more critical. We can deliver a true energy efficient, innovative and costs effective solution for your next project.

“ From recent dialogues and surveys conducted by Singapore Manufacturers’ Federation (SMa) with our manufacturers, many aired their pressing concerns on high cost of business operations and overheads, thus making it more difficult to cope in this economic slowdown,” said the SMa President, Renny Yeo. It is with this backdrop that SMa has put together a seminar on Energy Efficiency Saving for SMEs on the 22 January 2009. “This seminar is to help our manufacturers find practical ways to address operations efficiency, tracking of energy and reduction of energy consumption which also helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions,” he said.
Among the presenters were Tuas Power, National Environment Agency and Schneider Electric Singapore. Our Energy Consultant, Dr John Cheng presented a step-by-step procedure to walk through the simple process of energy savings to the audience.
Energy Efficiency
Energy Efficiency saving for SMEs
"30% energy saving is achievable with today technologies through a combination of efficient devices and installation, optimised usage and permanent monitoring and improvement", saidDr John Cheng. “Being an energy partner in all the fields, our enabling products, services and energy management systems help customers make significant energy savings”.
At the seminar, we showcased power monitoring system combined with variable speed drive - blower setup and lighting controller. The audience were impressed with the solution presented - providing the energy saving using Altivar speed drive for fan application and showing the real time data using our PowerLogic system.
To spice up the event, we offered complimentary energy efficiency walk-through audit service to the audience which may help them finding energy saving opportunities.
Overall, we received substantial enquiries as the result from this successful event.

M any people worry that the installation of such technology during retrofit is expensive and will cause too much disruption to the building’s occupants. In reality, the equipment and systems can be fitted cost effectively and without causing problems, in both new and retrofit installations. In both situations, an existing Ethernet network can be used and usually there is sufficient in-house IT knowledge to maintain it. Wireless and Ethernet technologies enable “plug-and-play” and convergence to allow centralised control. Indeed, all of Schneider Electric’s own buildings in the UK have had this technology successfully installed during retrofit.
In retrofit installations, there is the additional benefit that it is easy to benchmark energy savings. When a building has been operational for a period of time without this technology, the effects and advantages of intelligent energy management are immediately obvious.
In the US, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 - section 103 - requires “all Federal Agencies to install advanced metering in all federal facilities wherever found practical
by end of 2012”. In the UK, the recent revision of UK Building Bulletin 87 (BB87) – Guidelines for Environmental Design in Schools, requires that all UK schools now comply with the Building Regulation Part L2 – Conservation of Fuel and Power. In addition the British Government has launched the Building Schools for the Future initiative that aims to see the entire secondary school building stock upgraded and refurbished within 15 years.
The human angleThere is also a human side to the Active Energy Efficiency arguments. The greatest assets in the majority of buildings are the occupants. Comfort and safety are not negotiable. Typically a building may have a change of use many times in its lifespan. The ease with which these changes can be made is a further significant cost consideration and can impact on the energy management issue.
The bottom line is that for minimal investment, intelligent control and Active Energy Efficiency can be delivered without penalty. The net result is an attractive building that benefits the occupiers in terms of comfort, convenience, function and costs, but also offers long term savings in energy bills.

called SoMachine will enable users to manage the
project through one project file and interface with the
various hardware bases through a single upload/
download point.
Henceforth, users would no longer require different
interface tools for their hardware, they now have the
convenience of having to manage just one file and one
interface tool to programme and commission their
machines and the programme can now be accessed
through either one of the hardware bases.
Benefit to the OEM
In rolling out its new platform, Schneider Electric is
determined to maintain its focus by concentrating on
its OEM customers in specific market segments.
I n December 2008, at an event held in Monaco,
Schneider Electric introduced for the first time its
plans to sell more than just products but comprehensive
solutions to its customers.
In attendance at this initiative were more than 800
Original Machine Manufacturers (OEMs), customers
from the hoisting, packaging, material handling and
HVAC industries.
The event highlighted the latest developments in
Schneider Electric’s technology offering and gave the
customers a preview of the solutions offerings that
would be launched in 2009.
One of which is its Flexible Machine Control, a platform
that allows the user one tool to four hardware bases:

OEM Solution
The first phase of launch in April 2009 would focus on
OEMs in the Packaging, Hoisting and Material Handling
industries. Through its research and testing facilities,
Schneider Electric has prepared a host of Tested
Validated and Documented architectures (TVDa) for its
OEM’s panel design.
Along with these pre-designed architectures are a slew
of Application Function Blocks (AFBs). Both would assist
the OEMs by reducing design and programming time
thus conserving resources for the OEM and speeding up
the time from the machine’s conceptualisation to market.
Partnership for greater efficiency
Schneider Electric is committed to work with its OEM
partners to design and build better and more efficient
machines. For example, as part of its offer for hoisting,
there are Anti-Sway solutions that prevent the load from
uncontrolled swinging, simplifying the hoist operator’s
job and enhancing safety in the work area.
Other applications such as Anti-Crabbing and Trolley
synchronisation solutions help prolong the life of the
equipment by reducing wear and tear during operation.
For packaging applications, there are function blocks
available for “cutting on the fly”, temperature control
and film tensioning and positioning.
All of which are implemented to enhance the OEM’s
machine and endow them with the tools to build his
machine more quickly and efficiently. Other applications
in HVAC focus on assisting the OEMs develop more
energy efficient products and reducing the CO2
footprint of their equipment.

T here is nothing like the peace of mind you get
when dealing with a strong, vibrant, market-leading
brand, especially when so much of your success hinges
on the strength of the solutions you invest in. The
simplicity of dealing with a single supplier for every
element of a complex solution makes commissioning,
fault-finding and problem-solving a great deal easier.
That is why we are replacing our core brands - Merlin
Gerin and Telemecanique brands on the products we
manufacture with the Schneider Electric brand. The
company name that you have come to know and trust
over the past 15 years will soon become the brand you
will see on our market-leading products.
New packaging
In the last edition of Schneiderlink we announced a
new look and feel would be applied to the packaging of
our Merlin Gerin and Telemecanique products.
This is already happening and will accelerate in 2009.
As of March 2009, more than 90% of the packaging is
already in Schneider Electric brand. Remember, apart
from the appearance of the packaging, the size, weight
and dimensions of the box have remained the same.
New product marking
Beginning of 2009, we have started to change the brand
marking on the Merlin Gerin and Telemecanique
products to the Schneider Electric brand. As with the
changes to the packaging, the only thing that will
change will be the visual aspect. The product reference
number, dimensions, weights, lot sizes, and label
indicating the product information will remain exactly the
same.
Our logistics staff are applying a “first in, first out” (FIFO)
system to the distribution of our products, in order to
avoid mixing brands and reducing any inconvenience to
our customers. Although the visual aspects of the
products will change, you can rest assured the
performance characteristics and quality of your favourite
Schneider Electric product will remain unchanged.
From now on, you might see
Schneider Electric packaging containing products
marked Merlin Gerin or Telemecanique.
Schneider Electric packaging containing products
marked with the Schneider Electric brand. This is the
ultimate objective.
Our branding change makes its mark
If you have anyconcerns about thechanges, pleasecontact ourdistributor, SchneiderElectric SalesRepresentative orCustomer CareCentre.
