Few would argue that Paris reigns supreme as the ultimate romantic holiday spot. Filled with stunning art, beautiful parks and gardens, charming cafés and scrumptious eateries, the French capital can play the perfect host to your Valentine celebrations. Spice things up in the eclectic Shangri-La hotel, originally built for Napoleon Bonaparte’s nephew Roland. Since his death in 1924, the luxurious den underwent many transformations until it was meticulously restored to its former glory, complete with hand-painted and mosaic fittings, inspired by the Imperial period and sprinkled with an Asian feel. Be sure to nab one of the many rooms with Eiffel Tower views and relax with a glass of champagne as the dusk settles over the city of love.

There are fewer things in life bet-ter than cruising down the coast in a fiery red convertible with your loved one’s hair in the wind. Launched three years ago, the Fer-rari California goes from zero to 100 km/h faster than you can say ‘I love you, too’ - just 3.9 seconds. Its size is perfect for a couple and can be fitted with a bench, allow-ing enough space to store two travel trolleys. So far, the California has been completely selling out, so best make up your mind quickly for a chance to go like the wind (with the top up) in the most aero-dynamic Ferrari ever made.

Parijs is de ultieme romantische vakantiebestem-ming, weinigen zullen het tegendeel beweren. De stad barst van waanzinnige kunst, beeld-schone parken en tuinen, charmante cafés en aanlokkelijke eetgelegenheden. Het moge duidelijk zijn dat de Franse hoofdstad de per-fecte gastheer voor Valentijnsdag is. Maak het nog spannender in het unieke Shangri-La hotel, dat oorspronkelijk gebouwd is voor Napoleon Bonaparte’s achterneef Roland. Na zijn dood in 1924 heeft dit luxe pand veel veranderingen doorgemaakt en is minutieus gerestaureerd in zijn oude glorie. Het gebouw is gecompleteerd met handgeschilderde werken en mozaïsche vormen, geïnspireerd door de keizerlijke periode en besprenkeld met een Aziatische sfeer. If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, chocolate is her friend with benefits. Put these two together and you get the most deliciously extravagant Valentine’s Day gift, well, ever. Created in Brussels by master chocolatier Paul Wittamer, this praline combines dark ganache and caramel with touches of ginger and an edible gold leaf. What takes the opulence to the next level is the 3.63-carat diamond encrusted in the chocolate. It would set you back a whopping $240,000, so you’d be forgiven if you settled for a more modest, yet still loving present, such as personalised chocolates and cakes.

‘Tales from the streets, a life of high crime / To make it to the bottom, such a high climb,’ Dice Raw says resignedly at the end of ‘Kool On’, the fifth track on The Roots’ tenth full-length Undun. The line perfectly en-capsulates a concept album that follows part-real, part-fictional protagonist Redford Stephens. The record muses about life on the streets and, without glorifying it, laments the futility of such a life. The resulting 14 tracks feature a soulful mix of funky hip-hop laced with classical influences that form a poignant whole.

‘Tales from the streets, a life of high crime / To make it to the bottom, such a high climb,’ al-dus Dice raw aan het einde van de ‘Kool On’, de vijfde track op het tiende album van The roots, Undun. Deze zin is een perfecte weergave van dit conceptalbum dat de deels echte, deels fictieve hoofdpersoon redford Step-hens volgt. Seventeen years after her pain-fully confessional (and hugely popular) record My Life, Mary J. Blige is back with My Life II…The Journey Continues (Act 1). Clearly in her comfort zone, the album marks a return to form that’s 100% Mary – with some help from guests like Nas, Drake, Rick Ross and Beyoncé. ‘No Condition’ soulfully hints at the residue pain we all know (and love) the diva for. With confidence Mary makes Chaka Khan cover ‘Ain’t Nobody’ her own using groovy dance beats that also do well elsewhere on the album. Blige once again proves that pain and pleasure can be two sides of the same coin.

Soon after the songs rose in popularity, however, it was discovered that Abel Tesfaye (21), a Canadian recording art-ist of Ethiopian was responsible. MTV, BET, Rolling Stone, XXL, The Source and 2DopeBoyz have since all dubbed him ‘Songbird of his Generation’. The trilogy of albums he has released are all available for free download on his website the-weeknd.com. His song ‘High for This’ was featured in the promo video for the final season of HBO’s Entourage.

By a chance encounter, NYC’smost vicious lawyer HarveySpecter meets boy-man MikeRoss, the college dropout withaspirations of becoming anattorney in USA’s new legal-drama Suits. Mike is eager to learn the ropes in this out-of-court world of mortgage induc-ing suits and €25 martinis,and Harvey sees his fading hu-manity in this driven protégé. At times the squeaky-cleanNYC backdrop, breathtaking vistas and the show’s simplicity expose the illusion we’re not watching real people, but its great pacing and well-written dialogue make up for this. The show is breezy and engaging for the duration of the episode, but no longer than that.

In between a rigorous touring schedule and recording new material, elusive pop singer Jamie Woon recently found time to speak to Schiphol Magazine. Just don’t expect him to define himself.

Softly spoken, polite and at ease in deep conversation, Jamie Woon is a lot friendlier than his debut album Mirrorwriting might suggest. Laced with dark lyrical themes about loneliness and desolation, the album, which was released early last year, portrays a far more troubled individual than the one who happily begins chatting away to me backstage at Amsterdam´s Melkweg.

But then Woon has always been a slightly con-tradictory figure. His career so far has been marked by the idea that people just don´t know what to make of him. Originally emerging as an experimental dubstep act, Woon was cast into

the limelight after legendary dubstep producer Burial remixed his cover of the old American folk classic ´Wayfaring Stranger´.

Sneaky elementSWhile dubstep fans lapped up his haunting vocals, Woon shunned such experimentation on Mirrorwriting in favour of a poppier, more mainstream sound. So just what are we to make of Jamie Woon: Troubled pop star? Dubstep vocalist? None of the aforementioned?! ‘I’m quite sneaky about it,’ he laughs. ´I’ve always tried to resist being bracketed and like to incorporate lots of different influences. If anything, I would consider my album more of an R&B record than anything else. It just has some added electronica elements along the way.’

True to his softly spoken word, there is indeed an eclectic array of influences to be heard on Mirrorwriting. Songs like ´Street´ are haunting and synth-laden, while single ´Lady Luck´ sounds more like a straightforward R&B pop song in the vein of Justin Timberlake. Yet Woon

troubadour tradItIonS‘I originally started as a singer-songwriter in the troubadour tradition,’ says Woon. ‘So I´m very much focused on song structures and lyrics. The electro elements are just a way for me to breathe new life into the songs.’ Considering the array of instruments and musical styles to be heard on his album, one could be forgiven for not knowing what to expect from a live performance. But according to Jamie, that´s half the fun.

´My live shows vary greatly,´ he smiles. ‘I don’t always like being huddled around machines and pressing buttons, so most of the time I play with a band. But then I also love the challenge and intricacy of electronic instruments, so occasionally I strip everything back and play with lots of gadgets.’ Much like his music and public persona, it seems difficult to know exactly what the 28-year-old Englishman might do.

FreSh aIrWith baby-faced good looks, smooth vocals and a penchant for the occasional pop song, is there ultimately something that stops Woon from pushing himself further into mainstream success? ‘I don’t think I’m really built to be a public personality, I’m not that good at it,’ he laughs.

Yet any sense of shyness and resistance to pop stardom is perhaps the result of his humble, slightly introverted nature. Which - in a world full of inflated pop egos and opportunists - is actually a breath of fresh air. ‘I don’t like talking about myself all the time,’ says Woon, as he tires of all the questions. ‘I just want to keep making records. I’m completely content with doing that for the foreseeable future.´

Toch vind ik het van tijd tot tijd heerlijk om de uitdaging van de complexheid van elektronische instrumenten aan te gaan. Het kan dus voorkomen dat ik soms met een stel gadgets aan de slag ga.’

Net als zijn muziek en publieke persona, is het lastig in te schatten wat de 28-jarige Engelsman gaat doen.

voorliefde voor popsongs van tijd tot tijd, lijkt de weg vrij voor Woon’s mainstream succes, hoewel hij daar zelf vooralsnog weinig voor voelt. ‘Ik denk niet dat ik echt ben gemaakt om een bekendheid te worden, daar ben ik niet goed in,’ lacht hij.

Deze verlegenheid en weerstand om popster te worden is waarschijnlijk het product van zijn nederige, lichtelijk introverte karakter. Deze opstelling – in een popwereld vol ego’s en opportunisten – is een verademing. ‘Ik praat niet graag de hele tijd over mijzelf,’ zegt hij, vermoeid van alle vragen. ‘Graag blijf ik doorgaan met het maken van muziek. Ik ben helemaal tevreden als ik dat in de nabije toekomst kan blijven doen.’

Bas: ‘We just met right after New Year’s at a party in Minsk. I had to fly back home two days later but it turned out my flight was overbooked so they gave me €400 cash and I suddenly had this money and I thought, what can I do with it? So I just bought her a ticket and had her come visit me in the Netherlands. I took some days off work and showed her Rotterdam and Amsterdam. It’s been the perfect holiday. Unfortunately we have to say goodbye for now but we’re planning another reunion this summer.’

‘We just landed in Europe to start our honeymoon! We’re from South Korea and plan on doing a tour of Europe, including London and Amsterdam. I’ve been to Europe but it’s our first time visiting Amsterdam. We don’t know anything about Amsterdam and have no plans at all. We’re just going to show up and see what happens!’

Bas: ‘We hebben elkaar net na de jaarwisseling ontmoet op een feestje in Minsk. Twee dagen later zou ik naar huis vliegen, maar het bleek dat mijn vlucht was overboekt. I was served with divorce papers this morning. I’ve had better starts to the day. And though I knew they were coming, the actual moment when they landed in my hand still threw me. Because their arrival announced: This is the beginning of the end. I live in a small cottage. It’s located on a back road near the town of Edgecomb, Maine. The cottage is simple: two bedrooms, a study, an open-plan living/kitchen area, whitewashed walls, stained floorboards. I bought it a year ago when I came into some money. My father had just died. Though broke by the time that his heart exploded, he still had an insurance policy in place from his days as a corporate man. The policy paid out three hundred thousand dollars. As I was the sole child and the sole survivor – my mother having left this life years earlier – I was also the sole beneficiary. My father and I weren’t close. We spoke weekly on the phone. I made an annual three-day visit to his retirement bungalow in Arizona. And I did send him each of my travel books as they were published. Beyond that,

there was minimal contact – a long-ingrained awkwardness always curtailing any ease or familiarity between us. When I flew out alone to Phoenix to organise the funeral and close up his house, a local lawyer got in touch with me. He said that he’d drawn up Dad’s will, and did I know I was about to receive a nice little pay-off from the Mutual of Omaha Insurance Corporation? ‘But Dad was hard-up for years,’ I told the lawyer. ‘So why didn’t he cash in the policy and live on the proceeds?’ ‘Good question,’ the lawyer said. ‘Especially as I advised him to do that myself. But the old guy was very stubborn, very proud.’ ‘Tell me about it,’ I said. ‘I tried sending him some money once, not that I had much to offer him. He returned my cheque.’ ‘The few times I saw your dad, he bragged to me about his son the well-known writer.’ ‘I’m hardly well-known.’ ‘But you are published. And he was very proud of what you had accomplished.’ ‘That’s news to me,’ I said, suddenly fighting back tears. Dad had hardly ever said anything to me about my books.‘That generation of men – they often couldn’t articulate a damn thing they were feeling,’ the lawyer said. ‘But he obviously wanted you to have some sort of legacy from him – so expect a payout of three hundred grand in the next couple of weeks.’ I flew back east the next day. Instead of returning home to the house in Cambridge that I shared with my wife, I found myself renting a car at Logan Airport and pointing it in the direction of places north. It was early evening when I left the airport. I guided the car onto Interstate 95 and drove. Three hours later I

was on Route 1 in Maine. I passed through the town of Wiscasset, then crossed the Sheepscot River and pulled into a motel. It was mid-January. The mercury was well below freezing. A recent snowfall had bleached everything white, and I was the only guest at the inn. ‘What brings you up here at this time of year?’ the clerk at the reception desk asked me. ‘No idea,’ I said. I couldn’t sleep that night and drank most of the fifth of bourbon I had packed in my travel bag. At first light I got back into my rental car and started driving. I followed the road east; a narrow two-lane blacktop that snaked its way down a hill and around a curvy bend. Once that bend was negotiated, the pay-off was spectacular. For there in front of me was a frozen expanse, shaded in aquamarine; a vast sheltered bay, fringed by iced woodlands, with a low-lying fog hovering above its glaciated surface. I braked, then got out of the car. A boreal wind was blowing. It chafed my face and nettled my eyes. But I forced myself to walk down to the water’s edge. A meagre sun was attempting to light up the world. Its wattage was so low that the bay remained dappled in mist, making it seem both ethereal and haunted. Though the cold was brutal, I couldn’t take my gaze off this spectral landscape. Until another blast of wind made me turn away from it. And at that precise moment I saw the cottage.

Historically known as a city of artists and writers, Lisbon is not surprisingly the city to which giddy lovers have long flocked. Fernan-do Pessoa, the city’s most famous poet, once described his hometown as ‘rising like a fair vision in a dream, clear-cut against a bright blue sky which the sun gladdens with its gold’. Indeed, the Portuguese capital is blessed with an intense Mediterranean light that washes over its bright buildings, creating a magical atmosphere akin to an impressionist painting.

Clanging their way around the narrow, sunlit streets, Lisbon’s 100-year-old yellow trams are emblematic of the vintage, old-world charm that pervades the whole city. Complete with leather hand straps, wooden interiors and wheels that, sometimes worryingly, sound like they’re going to fall off, the rustic carriages trundle their way through mosaic alleyways, stylish neighbourhoods and beside the bright blue waters of the River Tagus.

While the rattling old trams – particularly number 28, which runs through the historic centre – have fast become a tourist attraction,

Het feit dat deze oude rijtuigen in gebruik blijven zegt veel over het karakter van Lissabon. Haar romantische charme is – deels – tijdloos en onbesmet door moderniteit.

PoëTische PlekjesEen wandeling door de elegante wijk Chiado onthult een fascinerende mix van oude charme met moderne voorzieningen. Een overvloed aan winkels van internationale ontwerpers en hippe boetiekjes is genesteld te midden van ou-derwetse cafés, boekhandels en bars waar oude mannetjes glazen port drinken en sigaren ro-ken. Voor het beroemde café A Brasileira wacht een groepje literaire toeristen geduldig tot ze op de foto kunnen met het levensgrote stand-beeld van Pessoa, dat het terras domineert. Hoewel het doet klinken als een marketingtruc, was dit café ooit een van Pessoa’s favoriete plek-jes om te genieten van absint, te roken en te schrijven tot in de kleine uurtjes. Hier te zitten en te kijken naar de modieus geklede mensen van hedendaags Chiado maakt het des te meer poëtisch vandaag de dag. Vooral na een paar glaasjes goede port.

Naastgelegen wijk Bairro Alto is het hart van Lis-sabons nachtleven en biedt een groot aanbod aan onconventionele bars en clubs. Het gebied, dat dateert uit de 16e eeuw en toen voorname-lijk de arbeidersklasse huisvestte, is niet zo schil-derachtig als Chiado door de gloed aan neon-verlichting van de vele horecagelegenheden. Toch heeft het op zijn eigen manier nog steeds zijn rustieke uitstraling. Naast het bewonderen van de prachtige barokke architectuur van de torenhoge Sao Roque kerk, is het ook de moeite waard om een snelle rit in de ‘Elevador da Bica’ te nemen. Deze iconische kabelspoorbaan loopt van Bairro Alto naar de centrale markt op Rua da Moeda.

heT oude en heT nieuweEvenals als de ouderwetse trams, zijn er talloze kabelspoorbanen in Lissabon. Deze zijn iets meer dan een eeuw geleden ontworpen om een deel van de hellingen die de stad rijk is te beklimmen. Opmerkelijk genoeg zijn ze van-daag de dag nog allemaal in gebruik en dienen ze naast het culturele aspect nog steeds een ander belangrijk doel: de bevolking voorzien van een effectieve methode van transport. In de oude rijtuigen pompen de oude zuigers hard door en de onberispelijk geklede bestuur-der begeleidt het gevaarte door steile, nauwe

The fact that these old vehicles remain in use says much about the character of Lisbon. Its romantic charm is, in parts, time-less and untainted by modernity.

Poetic HauntsA stroll through the elegant neighbourhood of Chiado reveals a fascinating blend of old-world charm and contemporary amenities. An abundance of international designer brands and modern boutiques nestle among old-style cafés, bookshops, and bars where flat-capped old men knock back glasses of port and puff cigars. Outside the famous Café A Brasileira, a flock of literary tourists wait patiently to have their photograph taken with the life-size bronze statue of Pessoa that dominates the terrace. While it might seem like a mere marketing ploy, the café used to be one of the poet’s favourite haunts to sip absinthe, smoke and write until the early hours. Thus, sitting there and watching the pretty fashionistas of modern day Chiado walk by becomes all the more poetic in this day and age. Especially af-ter a few fine ports.

Neighbouring district Bairro Alto is the heart of the city’s nightlife, and boasts a range of bohemian bars and clubs. While not so quaint as Chiado due to the neon glow of some of its drinking establishments, the area, which was originally a working-class quarter dating back to the 16th century, still has its own rustic ap-peal. In addition to marvelling at the magnifi-cent baroque architecture of the towering Sao Roque church, it’s also worth taking a quick

ride in the ‘Elevador da Bica’, an iconic funicu-lar railway that runs from Bairro Alto to the central market at Rua da Moeda.

Sleek modern archi-tecture dominates the area, including the im-pressive Torre Vasco da Gama - a shopping cen-tre and restaurant gallery that also happens to be the tallest building in Lisbon. Located right on the waterfront, The Oceanarium - the big-gest indoor aquarium in Europe - is also rather impressive, and makes for an interesting break from the high-end shops, bars and restaurants that surround the gleaming urban area. castles in tHe skyWith numerous museums, old-world architec-ture and an abundance of modern amenities, one could quite easily spend a few days in the heart of Lisbon and not fully experience all it has to offer. However, venturing a little further out of the city to the fairytale town of Sintra is a must for anyone with time to spare. Lo-cated 25 km northwest of Lisbon, Sintra was once described by the 19th-century romantic poet Robert Southey as ‘the most blessed and romantic spot in the habitable globe’. While the emergence of a few tacky tourist shops may have slightly blotted the town that Southey once described, it’s still possible to revel in the sheer beauty of this magical place.

‘And if you’re not in love, you will be when you go there.’ Luxuriantly green and leafy, Sintra has a number of castles peppered amongst hillside forests, with large trees winding their way up buildings and moss covering stone walls. One of the most spectacular buildings is the Palacio da Pena, which hangs amidst clouds on one of the highest hills. While it takes a while to hike up the long, winding road to get there, the views over Lisbon and the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean seen from the top most certainly make it worthwhile.

Sintra also offers something for those who would rather sit in cafés, sip coffee and, most importantly, eat delicious Portuguese sweet pastries. Regarded by many as one of the finest pastry shops in the country, Piriquitas doesn’t disappoint. Seasoned old Portuguese women craft beautiful tarts, cakes and choco-lates all day long, their specialty being the ‘Pasteis de Nata’ - a delicious custard cream tart that comes in a warm, fluffy pastry. If the scenery doesn’t already have you swoon-ing, then a trip to Piriquitas just might do the trick. At only 40 minutes on the train from Lisbon’s city centre, it’s a fairytale worth writ-ing yourself into.

‘enjoy life and love’Back in Lisbon, strolling along the quaint cobbled streets in Chiado or Alfama at night unveils the timeless, charismatic charm of the capital. Dimly lit street lamps provide a cinematic glow, elderly locals gossip on bal-conies and echoes of fado - traditional Portu-guese folk music - can be heard wailing from small bars. All the while, people sip on port and sample seafood nibbles right into the early hours.

It’s a sign of a city, and perhaps even a cul-ture, that knows how to enjoy life’s pleasures. Yes, talk of the economy is undoubtedly on people’s minds, and one might even question whether such a lifestyle might even be a hin-drance to its recovery. But it’s not all doom and gloom in old-world Lisbon, that’s a cer-tainty. ‘Rich or poor, Lisboetas will enjoy life and love all the same,’ laments a romantic old Fado guitarist in a bar as he sips a port. Amen to that.

Joséphine and Napoleon’s relationship remains one of the most enduring love stories and is well documented by many romantic letters Napoleon sent Joséphine. He finally divorced her because she could not produce an heir, but although he remarried, Napoleon’s dying words were: ‘France, l’armée, tête d’armée, Joséphine’ [‘France, the Army, Head of the Army, Joséphine.’]

Inside the modest Savane Park in Martinique’s capital Fort-de-France is a spectacular sight that’s hard to miss. A woman cut from the finest Italian marble stands tall, searching for her lover across the Caribbean Sea: headless, decapitated, guillotined. The surgical precision required for such a procedure indicates equipment and an abundance of able hands. The effort suggests a significant tale.This faceless empress was one of the island’s most notorious citizens: Joséphine de Beauharnais, Napoleon’s lover, first wife and a creole. The defacement – death by guillotine – is a telling reenactment of a punishment inherently French, a symbolic demise this statue received almost a century after Joséphine’s actual death. Etched in the same red that figuratively drips from her neck is the creole inscription ‘Respe ba Matinik. Respe ba 22 Me’ [Respect Martinique. Respect 22 May] - a date that recalls the 1848 slave rebellion that led to the abolition of slavery in Martinique. This scene is as telling about collective history as it is about identity issues and hegemonic power structures with the French.

Francophiles and FoodiesThe 1,128-km2 volcanic island in the Eastern Caribbean Sea is a warmer, less congested version of its parent, and one should not be surprised to see French men wielding baguettes in the street. Officially an overseas department of France, Martinique is part of the European Union, the currency is the euro, and the official language is French. Eighty percent of tourists are from France, and even though everything on the island is in their language, the work ethic is most decidedly Caribbean. Pani pwoblem [not a problem] is the national motto that for Martinicians is a lexical cure-all.

Martinique is great for Francophiles, but the long luscious beaches in the south and the volcanic black coastlines of the north accommodate hosts of divers and beach dwellers too. The south has more tourism with its picturesque fishing villages clinging to their seafaring spirit, but the jungle-rich north contains equally impressive flora – hence the island’s nickname ‘Isle of Flowers’. Yet it’s foodies that will enjoy the island most.

Meals in Martinique aren’t simply about nourishment, but form an essential staple of the culture here. They’re leisurely and le rhum flows copiously. It’s Chez Carol’s ‘mildly spicy’ Colombo - an Indian-type curry with a traditional spice blend – that makes my eyes water and taste buds jump for joy. Impossibly, chef Carol’s grin seems to warm my heart more than the sun and spice already have. It’s in this type of place, tucked at the back

Toch zullen de fijnproevers het meest genieten van dit eiland.Maaltijden op Martinique stellen niet alleen voeding ten doel, maar vormen een essentiële spil van de cultuur. Ze zijn ontspannen en le rhum vloeit rijkelijk. Het is Chez Carol’s ‘licht pit-tige’ Colombo – een Indiase curry, traditioneel gekruid – die voor tranende ogen en verheugde smaakpappillen zorgt. Op een bijna onmogelij-ke wijze maakt chef Carol’s grijns mijn hart war-mer dan de zon en specerijen die al maakten. Het is op dit soort plekken, verscholen achter een lokaal marktje, waar je de meest authen-tieke keuken vindt: een hybride stijl die Franse gastronomische vaardigheden met aardse cre-oolse invloeden mengt. Een stijl die verwijst naar een overweldigend turbulent verleden.

Het bleek van weinig belang voor de Spanjaarden en werd uiteindelijk opgeëist door de Fransen in 1635. Afgezien van perioden van Britse bezetting, bleef het in Franse handen.Gaandeweg werd het steeds ingewikkelder om een duidelijke bevolking te definiëren. De invoer van duizenden slaven uit Senegal, in combinatie met de koloniale invloeden, had als resultaat een etnische en culturele smeltkroes waarvan de overblijfselen zichtbaar zijn op de oude plantages op het eiland.Met zo’n diverse genealogie en een taal be-staande uit elementen van verschillende oor-sprong is het niet verrassend dat de nationale identiteit een samensmelting is. In de lokale keuken is dit te proeven aan de ingewikkelde smaakcombinaties. Helaas is het deze ontwik-keling die het doet lijken dat Martinique de ziel en geest mist die een plek als Barbados wel bezit.

identity crisisArawaks and Caribs first occupied Martinique, which was charted by Columbus. The island was of little interest to the Spanish and was ultimately claimed by the French in 1635. Despite interloping British occupations it remained a French possession.

Somewhere along the line it became increasingly difficult to define a distinct population on the island. The importation of thousands of slaves from a slave port in Senegal added to this host of colonial influences and resulted in an ethnic and cultural melting pot that’s well documented on the sites of old plantations around the island.

With such diverse genealogy and a language that takes elements from a host of different origins, it is unsurprising that the national identity is convoluted - something that comes out beautifully through the intricate flavour combinations of the local cuisine. Unfortunately, it’s this development that can make it feel like Martinique lacks the soul and spirit of a place like Barbados.

As passionate curator Murielle Thermed guides me across one of the many monuments that hark back to the opulence and oppression of the nation’s sugarcane plantocracy, she laments this identity crisis. ‘Like a ball we were tossed around. We were French and African and Portuguese,’ she says, working up a sweat in the 30-degree sun. ‘For the French it was all liberté, égalité, fraternité during the French revolution, but slavery wasn’t abolished here until 1884,’ [the date when the marble empress met her machinated match]. ‘It kind of makes the myth of democracy lose some of its shine.’

The national identity is convoluted

Martinicians have a peculiar relationship with rum, which is known to some as the best in the world. Unlike in other areas of the region, however, much of the rum on Martinique is Rhum Agricole, a method of distilling rum from freshly squeezed cane instead of molasses (Rhum Industriel). Agricole has no added sugar and is usually distilled to 70% alcohol and then watered down. Differing types of soil and cane make agricoles very diverse, even within the same region. Martinique’s rum is known for its light and refined taste. The best dark rum on the island is supposed to be Le Favorite and the tastiest white rum is reportedly Clement.

PatrIarchaatHoewel het een veelzijdig, bergachtig eiland is met rijke vegetatie dat de strijd met andere Caribische eilanden met gemak aan kan en ze wellicht overtreft, is het de delicate relatie met Frankrijk die de overhand heeft. Een in zwaar weer verkerende economie helpt ook niet echt. Martinique is sterk afhankelijk van de produc-tie van bananen, ananas en rum (waarvan het grootste deel lokaal wordt geconsumeerd), maar vrijwel al het overige wordt geïmporteerd. Vanwege ingewikkelde handelsbetrekkingen komt het merendeel van de producten uit Frankrijk (afstand: 6797 km). De daaruit voort-vloeiende hoge kosten van levensonderhoud en een chronisch tekort op de handelsbalans leiden jaarlijks tot veel Franse steunhulp. Pre-cies dezelfde soort patriarchale relatie die mede leidde tot de inspiratie om het beeld van Josép-hine te molesteren.

A struggling economy doesn’t help either. Martinique relies heavily on the production of bananas, pineapples and rum (most of which is consumed locally), but pretty much everything else is imported. Due to tricky trade relations, most of the produce comes from France of all places (6,797 km away). The resulting high cost of living and chronic trade deficit lead to large annual aid transfers from France, which in turn hints at the type of a patriarchal relation that inspired the molestation of Joséphine’s statue in the first place.

The symbolic decapitation of Joséphine, a fate she avoided during the French Revolution, was a reaction to her false incarnation as a

symbol of Martinician identity. It was a people desperately searching for their identity, and after more than 100 years it is clear they are still searching. It begins to explain why, unfortunately, that African vivaciousness that’s so exuberant in most of the other Caribbean isles seems misplaced in Martinique. But with a turbulent history in mind, a beheaded heiress towering over me, and the complicated flavours of Colombo lingering in my mouth, it all seems strangely poetic.

This slender debut might be more of a series of linked vignettes than an actual novel, but together Torres’s literary snapshots of a dysfunctional family certainly pack an epic emotional punch.

Narrated by the youngest of three brothers, they tell the story of an unsettling youth. While their parents, a white Brooklyn mother and a Puer-to Rican father, struggle with their own demons – a pas-sionate but often violent rela-tionship, the daily problems of making ends meet – the ‘three-torsoed beast’-siblings create a grim fairytale-world of their own. They have wild tomato-wars in the kitchen, build kites from garbage and defend one another against any white trash kid (or adult) that stands in their way.

But while the unnamed boy finds solace in their intimate brotherhood, he ulti-mately stands alone. Smarter and more sensitive than Manny or Leon, he is deeply disturbed by the neurotic and smothering love of Ma and Pa’s brutish outbreaks.

Torres portrays the family in gorgeous poetic prose. And when the boy finally tries to break free from the ties that bind, the dramatic conse-quences will shock you and break your heart.

One brother quickly falls under the dark spell of their kidnapper, continuing his killing spree long after he is there to force his hand; the other tries to do the right thing under the direst of circumstances.

Both are hunted, scared and traumatised. Bad Signs isn’t a book for the faint-hearted. There are scenes of graphic violence here to rival even Stephen King at his goriest. But few writers can make small-town seem quite so threatening and real. Clay and Digger’s journey, littered with surprising plot twists, is one you won’t forget.

His previous masterpiece, The Invention of Hugo Cabret (2007), will probably find an even greater readership after the brilliant screen adapta-tion by Martin Scorsese – premiering in Dutch theatres on 16 February.

It seemed a hard act to follow. But Selznick’s latest book, Wonderstruck, proves every bit as memorable. Using essentially the same in-ventive storytelling technique – beautiful pencil drawings seamlessly mixed with nar-rative prose – the writer and illustrator tells the stories of Ben and Rose.

The former, rendered in words, is a boy in 1970s Minnesota who comes to New York to find his father; the lat-ter, conveyed visually, is a girl in the 1920s who also runs away from home, in New Jer-sey, and goes to the Big Apple to meet her favourite movie star. And, oh, by the way: both kids are deaf.Their quests and characters are equally gripping, en-compassing everything from silent movies and deaf culture to the wondrous world of museums (particularly the American Museum of Natural History) and ... wolves. And in the final pages the two tales intersect in a way that is both surprising and deeply satisfying.

Moreover, Dutch developer Code-glue adds a bazooka with infinite ammunition to your equipment. You can destroy everything that crosses your path, causing blocks to splash across the screen. Sometimes you have to take down all the enemies (who are also using jetpacks), while on other occasions you only have to point your gun at certain targets. At some point, however, it all starts to feel the same, which can cause this game to become boring.

Tetris never feels out-dated and rarely bores. Fortunately, EA’s newest version of the game doesn’t disappoint. Building a tower of tetromino blocks, and subsequently tearing it down, is as amusing as it was 27 years ago, when the game first came out. This time, building the tower is even easier, thanks to the ‘one-touch controls’. Just tapping the ideal spot is enough to put your block in place, which is ideal for the iPhone. Not only does the game offer an endless mode, where you try to get a high score, it’s also an option to destroy a certain number of lines with as few blocks as possible.

This is the iOS edition of the eponymous German board game, in which a large game board, consisting of various routes, has to be filled using destination tickets. These tickets command you to connect a starting point to a specific destination, both shown on the card. To cover your routes, you have to use coloured trains that match the course. Both the iPad and iPhone versions can be played with more than one person, but on the iPad this is more satisfying. Passing your tablet to the person next to you, or playing online: it’s all possible.

The world’s most famous kart racing game can now be played on the Nintendo 3DS. There are even some innovations, such as the hang glider that pops out of your kart when you make a big jump. Mario Kart 7 also falls back on elements from previous games. For example, you can collect coins while racing, which gives you a slight speed advantage. This was last seen in the Super Nintendo and Game Boy Advance ver-sions, from 1992 and 2001 respectively. The big ques-tion, of course, is whether you’ve had enough of Mario Kart after seven games, or still feel like another round on a colourful circuit with Mario and friends.

Only an hour’s drive from Geneva Airport and beautifully set at the foot of the Mont Blanc, Les Con-tamines (Haute Savoie, France) remains a little-known paradise for winter-sport lovers. Schiphol Maga-zine goes beyond the slopes to ex-plore some extreme snow activities.

It’s easily accessible, has broad slopes with beau-tiful views, is guaranteed snow until mid-April, and is suitable for all levels. Les Contamines pretty much has all the ingredients to become a major skiing hub. But unlike nearby posh and over-priced resorts like Chamonix and St. Mo-ritz, this gem of the French Alps has, to date, re-mained a fairly quiet and easy-going resort.

Still, Les Contamines should not be mistaken for a sleepy mountain town. Adventure seekers will love the various off-piste possibilities, the freestyle ski-cross park and many other extreme sports. Due to its perfect conditions and profes-sional organisation, it’s no coincidence the re-sort holds the World Cup ski-cross every year and the British Army comes here for some hard-core training. I decide to check out the Nordic park just outside the village, situated between pine forest, torrents and glades, for some adven-turous snow sports. To start things off, it’s time to climb an ice-wall.

One BiG pOpSiCLe‘You’re the first climbers of the season, so it might be challenging,’ our young but dead-seri-ous guide Matthias warns us. ‘Usually the wall has some tracks already, but now you’ll have to find your own way up.’ Great, I think, while look-ing up the impres-sive semi-artificial waterfall at Notre-Dame-de-la-Gorge. The water is pumped up from the river that runs through the area, forming a large icy wall about 15 m high. As an inexperienced climber, the ice-wall looks like one big popsicle to me. Mainly to warm up from

Maar in tegenstelling tot nabijgelegen chique en te dure resorts als Cha-monix en St. Moritz, heeft dit juweeltje in de Franse Alpen tot op heden een vrij rustig en gemoedelijk karakter.

Toch moet Les Contamines niet verward worden met een slaperig bergdorpje. Avonturiers zullen genieten van de diverse off-piste mogelijkheden, het freestyle skicross park en de vele andere ex-treme sports die er beoefend kunnen worden. Vanwege de perfecte omstandigheden en profes-sionele organisatie is het geen toeval dat in dit resort elk jaar het wereldkampioenschap skicross wordt gehouden. Daarnaast komt het Britse leger hier regelmatig voor een zware sneeuwtraining. Ik heb besloten om richting het Nordic park te gaan, net buiten het dorp in een dennenbos met bergstroompjes en open plekken voor wat avon-tuurlijke sneeuwsport. Het is tijd om een ijsmuur te beklimmen.

To the west, the resort stretches out over the sides of le Mont Joly (2,525 m.) and allows one to access skiing at Hauteluce through the Col du Joly.

Slopes: 120 km of trails ranging from 1,164 to 2,500 m. The tracks are suit-able for all levels. Adventurous skiers can enjoy eight black runs and many off-piste options.

Village population: 1,100 residents, 5,000 to 6,000 visitors in high season.

Best time to go: Mid-January if you’re interested in the World Cup ski-cross, mid-March if you want to enjoy lots of sun and quiet slopes. Mid-February to mid-March is busiest due to French holidays. Depending on snowfall, the area is open until the end of April.

the freezing cold, I offer to be the first one to have a go. Equipped with spiked snowshoes, two ice axes, a helmet and secured by a rope, I start climbing up. ‘Always think about your next move and keep your heels down,’ Matt-hias shouts while I look for possibilities to self-arrest. His instructions are simple but seem to work. Before I know it, I’ve climbed to a ledge high up from the starting point. Then it becomes tricky. Further up, the wall

consists of giant icicles that break once I try to dig in my ice axe. After looking down and seeing how far I’ve come, I decide I’m satis-fied with my achievement and slowly start descending. If I ever come back for a second try, I’ll definitely do it at night, when the ice-wall is supposed to be beautifully lit. Once the whole group has given it a go (no one reaches the top), Matthias climbs all the way up like he’s walking a staircase. ‘I had some difficul-ties with the first part too,’ he tries to comfort us after coming down. Yeah right.

BAttLinG witH BiAtHLOnWith some newfound confidence from the ice-climbing experience, I try a new challenge: biathlon. This combination of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting originated as a train-ing method for Norwegian soldiers, and is still used by the international military. It’s also an Olympic event and has its own World Cup competition. Since my grandfather was a cross-country fanatic, I always figured it was something old people do once they’ve become too fragile for the slopes. Well, a few minutes on the narrow cross-country skis definitely proves me wrong. Like all sports, this is some-thing that looks a lot easier than it is. Trying to find my balance and getting up to speed is incredibly hard. My extensive ski and ice-skating skills do not seem to help much; I keep getting stuck in the snow and even fall down twice. Struggling to get up, I enviously watch a group of five men passing by with enormous speed. ‘They’re a professional team from the UK,’ our biathlon instructor Bruno explains. ‘They come here every year to train for the international competitions.’ One of the guys,

Als ik naar beneden kijk om te zien hoe ver ik ben gekomen, ben ik tevreden met mijn prestatie en daal weer af. Als ik ooit terugkom voor een tweede poging, doe ik dat ’s nachts, wanneer de ijsmuur waarschijn-lijk een mooie glans heeft. Zodra de hele groep het heeft geprobeerd (niemand bereikt de top), klimt Matthias zelf omhoog alsof hij een trap oploopt. ‘Ik had ook wat moeite met het eerste deel,’ zegt hij om ons te troosten. Maar natuur-lijk.

BiatLOnStrijdMet hernieuwd vertrouwen van het ijsklimmen, probeer ik een nieuw uitdaging: biatlon. Deze combinatie van langlaufen en schieten is ont-staan als trainingsmethode voor Noorweegse soldaten en wordt nog steeds gebruikt door het leger. Biatlon maakt daarnaast deel uit van de Olympische Spelen en heeft een eigen wereld-kampioenschap. Omdat mijn opa een fanatieke langlaufer was, dacht ik altijd dat het iets was dat oude mensen deden als ze te fragiel voor de skipiste werden. Een paar minuten op de smalle langlaufski’s bewijst dat ik het fout had. Zoals bij alle sporten, ziet dit er simpeler uit dan het is. Balans vinden en op snelheid komen is ongelofelijk moeilijk. Mijn uitgebreide ski- en schaatsvaardigheden blijken weinig te helpen; ik kom telkens vast te zitten in de sneeuw en val zelfs twee keer. Met moeite kom ik omhoog en kijk vol afgunst naar een groep mannen die mij passeren met hoge snelheid. ‘Ze zijn een professioneel Brits team,’ verklaart onze instruc-teur Bruno. ‘Ze komen hier elk jaar om te trai-nen voor de internationale competitie.’ Eén van de mannen, WK-deelnemer Mark Walker, stopt voor een praatje. ‘Dit gebied is zeer geschikt om te oefenen, omdat de zwarte piste uit een aantal lastige onderdelen bestaat,’ vertelt hij. ‘Het park is een stuk professioneler geworden de laatste jaren, in het bijzonder de schietbaan.’ Goed om te weten, want ik heb genoeg van het langlaufen en ben klaar om te schieten.

World Cup contestant Mark Walker, stops for a chat. ‘This area is great for practice, since the black slope features some pretty tricky parts,’ he tells. ‘The park has professionalised a lot over the last few years, especially the shooting range.’ Good to know, because I’m done with cross-country and ready to shoot some rifles.

A true BOnd GirLCasually holding the official biathlon bore rifle, Captain Dave Moffitt from the British Army is already waiting for us at the shooting range. ‘The target range is 50 m,’ Dave explains while pointing at the five circular targets at the end. ‘When shooting in the prone position (lying down, ed.) the target diameter is 45 mm, from a standing position it’s 115 mm.’ After a small introduction (‘We’re firing real bullets here, so no pointing at anyone please’) we get to try for ourselves. It’s my first time holding a rifle and I have to admit, it’s kind of exhilarating. While most people find the prone position easier, I have more luck standing up. Focussing on the five tiny targets, I manage to hit three out of five. Dave is impressed. ‘Not bad at all, you’re a natural!’ I’m starting to feel like a true Bond girl, but Dave puts me right on that one. ‘You’re all fit and relaxed right now, but imagine hav-ing to shoot after an intensive cross-country trail and under so much pressure. Besides, you’re only doing the 115-mm target.’ OK, so I might not be ready for a professional biathlon yet, but I think I did well enough to deserve a local treat. Still glowing from the cross-coun-try workout and rifle-firing thrill, we head to the park’s chalet, where Bruno pours us all a small glass of Génépi. This typical alpine liquor that’s similar to absinthe includes the alpine plant Artemisia and contains lots of alcohol (45%). After a few sips, I feel like some après-biathlon sleep. No chance. Bruno, well in his sixties, is still full of energy. ‘So, who’s up for some snow-shoeing tonight?’

Daarnaast doe je nu het 115 milli-meter doel.’ Oké, ik ben waarschijnlijk nog niet klaar voor het echte werk, maar het was goed genoeg om mezelf te belonen met een lokale traktatie. Gloeiend van de langlauftraining en schietsensatie, vertrekken we naar het chalet van het park, waar Bruno ons een klein glaasje Génépi inschenkt. Deze typische alpenlikeur, die vergelijkbaar is met absint, bevat de alpen-plant Artemisia en heeft een hoog alcoholper-centage (45%). When we’re young we push and we shove and we call names to let the boys and girls know we like them. When we grow up we forget how much fun it is to shove and sprint. Sweep Away is basically a dry variant of the obstacle course in the popular television programme Wipeout. And although not the most conventional place to go on a date we think it’s both original and strangely romantic. (Mornings are for non-groups.)

Spacious, relaxed and luxurious: the key adjectives describing the experience at Sauna Devarana, one of the Netherlands’ most impressive wellness centres. Set in a former grocery store this art-deco style hotel is typically Dutch. A night in this hotel is cosy and romantic; the champagne breakfast that may follow makes it altogether unforgettable.

For three years running De Havixhorst Chateauhotel and Restaurant has won the ‘castle of the year’ award in the Netherlands. Upon arrival it’s not hard to see why. From the pristine service to the abundant castle and the immaculate gardens surrounding it, it’s like going back in time. The eight differently styled castle suites are well kept and the cuisine is renowned throughout the country. True royalty treatment well deserved by any princess.

A famous Dutch song muses about the spoils of the ‘Zeeuwse’ coast of Holland’s most south-eastern province. The song doesn’t lie. The coastline of Zeeland, after which New Zealand was named, is impressive, not least for its power to keep large parts of Holland dry with dams. Long walks along the beach and through the woods reveal the idyllic nature of this area. Hotel de Zeeuwse Stromen offers a two-day ‘dream away’ package that does just that.

The Netherlands is known for its plethora of bicycles, but why put in all the work alone when you can do it together. For an unusual day and an experience to remember rent a tandem bicycle in Amersfoort. ‘Ervaar Maar’ has a package deal that sends you through the heart of Amersfoort and the lush nature around it. They’ll also provide a romantic picnic set that includes prosecco and snacks.

We know, we know! Getting balloons for your better half no longer makes the cut for a romantic gesture. But what if you increase that balloon in size – a lot – fill it with hot air, hang a wicker basket under it, pop your loved one in and stick a glass of champagne in his or her hand? Amsterdam, often dubbed ‘the Venice of the north’, actually has only one gondola. Tirza Mol (38) took her boat-building course in Amsterdam abroad and spent four months learning the craft of gondola-making on a builder’s shipyard in Venice. Several years after her return she was finally given permission to launch her creation. You can hire this most romantic of vessels and her captain to float around Amsterdam. Blankets are a must in winter.

Leeuwarden is famed as the start and finish of the world’s largest and longest (200 km) speed skating competition: the Elfstedentocht (‘eleven city tour’). Although the ice in Friesland has been unable to support the tour for almost 20 years, ice skating remains an integral part of Frisian culture. You can rent skates at IJshal Leeuwarden and head out on the rink, or strap them on to explore areas of the city centre if the ice is willing.

During the later half of the 18th century romantic English-style gardens came into fashion around the world and particularly in the Netherlands. In Zwolle a park was designed in this style to the south-west of the city, directly on the dyke that contains the river from which the province derives its name: the IJssel. The immaculate park was dubbed ‘The English Work’ after the now-popular design aesthetic. It offers great walks and stunning views of the river.
