As different as our business areas are, they

are all united by our common aspiration

to provide our customers with “Excellence

in Steel”. What this actually means in each

case will all be revealed on the following

pages, where we provide a colourful over-

view, spanning all our business divisions.

In Perforated Metal, for instance, we Peter Bosbach Rainer Bröcher

supply the basis material for intelligent facade and shade systems and in future will also be

extending our range of machining services for perforated metal.

KEG services are now taking an increasingly important role. “Volume reduction” is our

response to this trend, as well as to the trend towards craft brewers’ “home-made” beers.

The launch of our new SLC Food Container was a great success, leading to initial orders

already being placed.

In our Industrial Solutions and IT divisions, we'll be presenting projects which provide

customers with made-to-measure solutions for individual requirements. Here, the question

of IT security takes a prominent role.

And finally, with the help of a concrete project, we’ll be demonstrating how our EMW Steel

Service Centre, in cooperation with SSI SCHÄFER, makes use of the many and varied syner-

gies within the SCHÄFER GROuP to the benefit of our customers.

At this point, let us just note that “Excellence in Steel” would be impossible without our

employees, who we would like to thank for their commitment and support.

As is traditional, we wish you all the best, with a Siegerland “Glück Auf”.

The idea behind “Green Logistics” is to completely reorganise logistics strategies, procedures and structures to make compa-nies' logistics processes more environmental and to achieve a more efficient use of resour-ces. The target system pursued by “Green Logistics” is the creation of sustainable cor-porate value by balancing economic and ecological efficiency. For some time, both EMW Steel Service Centre and SCHÄFER WERKE have been

consistently using “intermodal transport” to ship their goods. This concept combines road and rail to get the best results from their respective strong points. Intermodal trans-port means more goods are carried by rail, thus cutting CO2 emissions.SCHÄFER's declared objective is to continue supporting these environmental protec-tion measures and even to intensify them in future.

In April 2013, EMW received the ISO 14001 environmental management system certificate. ISO 14001 is an internationally recognised standard stipulating how an effective environ-mental management system is to be set up, and is intended to create a balance between economy and ecology. The one does not exclude the other, if the entire organisation shows the required commitment.

Ecologically sustainable: each year, more than 200,000 tons of thin sheet reach EMW by rail, twice as much as in 2009.

As a company operating internationally, Müller has over 600 branches all over Europe. Opening new branches each year forms the basis for the continuous development of the business both at home and abroad. Müller's own aspirations are reflected in the great variety of these outlets, in which custo-mers can find a wide range of health products, perfumes, stationary and toys, household goods and multimedia products. The task of supplying all these outlets on time with the right goods requires perfect logi-stics. So, to make sure this keeps pace with the company's expansion, Müller decided to increase storage capacities and build a new logistics centre.

EMW and SSI SCHÄFER: Strong partners for MüllerNot far from the company head office in the north of Ulm, Müller Ltd. & Co. KG operates a huge logistics centre, covering an area as large

as 5 football pitches. The synergies between SSI SCHÄFER and the EMW Steel Service Centre, both belonging to the SCHÄFER GROUP,

made a significant contribution to the company being able to keep to the tight schedule for this huge project.

259 metres long, 104 metres wide and with concrete supports of up to 35 metres in height, this new structure was designed to enable an especially compact form of storage and order picking.Though only recently completed, the buil-ding with its giant Müller logo has already become an eye-catching landmark for ulm on the A8 autobahn between Munich and Stuttgart. It includes a high-bay pallet rack with around 39,000 storage spaces and a con-tainer rack with about 170,000 spaces. Each of these had a scheduled construction time of only 5 months. To keep to this time frame, work went on in two shifts, 7 days a week, with up to 60 fitters on site at the same time.

Once again, Müller went for high-bay racking expertise from the Siegerland by choosing SSI SCHÄFER, Neunkirchen, as its partner for the steel construction work on both storage systems. The steel for manufacturing the profiles was supplied to SSI SCHÄFER by the EMW Steel Service Centre. As one of Europe’s largest independent steel service centres, EMW has around 100,000 tons of sheet permanently in stock in over 32,000 sq. m of storage space. Almost all current market grades are con-stantly available for delivery: standard and special grades, mainly hot-dip and electro-lytically galvanized, warm and cold-rolled, hot-dip aluminised, as well as plastic and organically coated. This extensive stockpile

in combination with state-of-the-art logistics and decades of experience in steel services, EMW was able to supply the required slit strip in the shortest possible time. As both companies belong to the SCHÄFER GROuP and are based at the same site in Neunkirchen, very short delivery and proces-sing times for the logistics centre's approxi-mately 7,000 tons of steel could be achieved. The resulting just-in-time delivery led to Müller enjoying the cost-effective and punc-tual completion of the project. An overall length of more than 800 kilometres of profiles were manufactured in Neunkirchen and over 540 lorries were needed to transport them to the construction site. The successful completion of the project has resulted in 550 new jobs being created at the logistics complex. The potential for extension in three directions was taken into conside-ration from the outset, meaning that there are basically no limits to logistics growth at the ulm site nor to any future expansion of Müller's network of outlets.

Energy efficient sun protection thanks to Perforated Metal

Since its inauguration in late 2012, the new head office of mobile phone operator Vodafone in Düsseldorf has been able to

accommodate some 5,000 staff. The 75-metre office tower and three low-rise buildings on the Vodafone Campus will make up one of

the new architectural landmarks in the Rhine metropolis. Here, Vodafone has implemented the highest standards of energy efficiency

and sustainability. SCHÄFER’s Perforated Metal sun protection louvers have made a major contribution to this achievement.

The translucence of the 21,850 indi-vidual louvers, made from 34,700 metres of aluminium sheet, comes from a special perforation pattern newly developed by SCHÄFER Perforated Metal from specificati-ons provided by the architects HPP Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner from Düsseldorf. Due to the tower's elliptical geometry, SCHÄFER bent the perforated sheets along the longitudinal axis at a radius of about 900 mm. They were then positioned in a tra-pezoidal shape at a defined angle at the face end, to fit the continuous curved line of the facade. Consequently, the sun protection louvers contribute equally to the overall aes-thetic impression and to the energy concept of the Vodafone Campus.Detailed thermal simulations were used to determine individual tilt angles for the

rainwater for watering the plants, while modern fittings reduce the amount of water used by sanitary installations. Heating is pro-vided by a combination of district heat with low CO2 emissions and the company's own biogas combined heat and power plant (CHP). In Summer, the CHP’s excess heat can also be used for absorption cooling. This may not always be needed, as the sun protection louvers, that characterise the appearance of the tower and the three low-rise blocks A, B and C, combined with the around 4,500 sq. m. of double insulated glazing, already reduce the amount of energy required for cooling. In keeping with the building work’s progress, SCHÄFER Perforated Metal delivered the 70 tons of aluminium blanks in batches of 6 months to the ARGE Fassade Dobler

facade louvers on each side of the triangu-lar campus and the tower, which was erec-ted on an almost elliptical base. This meant that for each side of the building and for the sunlight’s typical angles of incidence on each one, the optimal compromise between protection from excessive warming and suf-ficient natural sunlight could be determined, which also saves energy for room lighting. For the new building in Düsseldorf, Voda-fone had aimed to achieve the LEED certi-ficate in Gold. Developed in the uSA, the LEED Standard (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) has established itself internationally as the standard rating system for efficient use of energy and resources in buildings. Many different functions contri-bute to achieving this ambitious aim. For instance, in the courtyard, a cistern collects

Metallbau GmbH and Scheffer Metallbau GmbH, who completed their work in February 2012.Building work on the Campus had started in September 2010 under the supervision of the contractors Arge Vodafone Campus Düs-seldorf, a company belonging to the Bremen Zechbau GmbH, and Ed. Züblin AG, Düssel-dorf region, on the site of the old Gatzweiler Brewery in Düsseldorf-Heerdt.By the time of its punctual inauguration on 15th. December 2012, the Vodafone Campus was the biggest office building site in Europe. SCHÄFER’s on-time deliveries of perforated sheets made an important contribution to maintaining the very tight schedule, as any delays on projects of this magnitude can have far-reaching con-sequences for the work of other subcon-tractors.

Saving energy with sun protection

Heating and cooling buildings is responsible for 20 % of the energy used worldwide. This is precisely where the potential for improved energy efficiency can be found. Summer heat outside, pent-up, stuffy temperatures inside. More and more people are investing in air conditio-ning so they can keep a cool head in a hot

summer. The cheaper option, and much better for the climate, is not to let the heat in at all – simply lock it out. Sun protection can significantly contribute to reducing energy needs by regulating the inci-dence of sunlight and thus room tempe-ratures. Externally installed sun protection allows only 5 % of the sun’s energy into a

room, compared to up to 60 % without it! Modern sun protection systems should not only be installed on the south facing side of a house or building. Protecting the north-facing facade can also considerably cut cooling energy needs.

rated plates with a width of 1,000 mm and a thickness of 2.0 mm. The architectural concept meant that panels in four diffe-rent lengths from 3,000 to 4,500 millimetres were needed. SCHÄFER Perforated Metal delivered the 1,455 panels with the Rv 3-6 perforation pattern within the shortest pos-sible time.During the course of the Bahnstadt Heidel-berg project, a residential and commercial building programme will see an entirely new district come into being on the 116 hectare site of the old Heidelberg shunting and goods station. To attract science-based hi-tech businesses, the Skylabs complex will not only be providing rental space in its three buildings – “Block” and “Spine” each with five, and “Tower” with nine storeys –, but also central service facilities for biotechno-logical and pharmacological research of the standard found in university laboratories or large pharmaceutical corporations. To install the folding shutters, Christian Pohl GmbH first had to shape and then strengthen the perforated panels, which were then fitted to the folding mechanism provided for the shutters by Belu Tec GmbH and then fixed into place, in keeping with the building geometry. Summarising events, Michael Doellert, project manager at Christian Pohl GmbH said: “The tight time frame for coor-dinating the facade work and the shutter installation meant that SCHÄFER Perforated Metal’s good service and fast, very punctual delivery was an important contribution to “Skylabs Heidelberg” being completed on schedule. Consequently, we're looking for-ward to working with SCHÄFER Perforated Metal again.”

SCHÄFER Container Systems has increased its market share for beer KEGs in North America and expects this trend to continue. After intensive market research, SCHÄFER has decided to produce KEGs in all the uSA’s standard sizes. Together with its Canada-based partner Keg Club Inc., SCHÄFER has been able to increase both brand awareness and sales of its KEGs. The products are supplied from a number of dif-ferent storage locations in Canada and the uSA.

Well spotted:

Trends in North America Home brew, not mass production: in a globalised world, innovations sweeping from one continent to another is nothing

new, but who would have thought that valuable impulses on that most German of all subjects, beer, would come from the USA?

Not only that, but impulses that return to the most original beer brewing virtues? To the best, purest ingredients,

traditional skills and a good portion of creativity when it comes to beer variety.

Big brewing groups and imported beers have long dominated the North American beer market largely unchallenged. How-ever, in the meantime, smaller independent breweries, the so-called “Craft Brewers” are gradually increasing their market share. In the past five years, craft brewer turnover has increased by more than 10 % each year. This puts the independent American bre-wers well on the way to knocking the big brewery groups’ imported beer off its perch. This is something SCHÄFER’s KEG sales have also profited from, because they spotted this trend early and because craft brewers are increasingly turning to KEGs rather than bottles. Thanks to increased presence in trade media, at trade fairs and craft brewing festivals, as well as intensifying existing con-tacts in the market, SCHÄFER’s turnover has grown along with that of the craft brewers. In 2012, the uS Brewers Association put the number of breweries in the united States at 2,126. Besides this, the number of wine growers on the North American continent is estimated to be over 7,000. These figures highlight the economic potential of another trend in the North American

beverages industry for SCHÄFER Container Systems: Wine in KEGs. Increasing numbers of American wine growers are turning to this concept, with which SCHÄFER has already gained a lot of experience in other markets. By attending trade fairs and targeting wine growers with information, SCHÄFER has been able to present the benefits of using self-sufficient dispensing systems like freshKEG and smartDRAFT for their beverages. With these small dispensing units, you can serve fresh draught beer and wine anywhere and at any time. As producers, dealers and con-sumers are increasingly warming to the idea of wine in stainless steel kegs, an entirely new market is opening up, in which SCHÄFER Container Systems has already gained a successful foothold. Existing business contacts to the large bre-wers, above-average growth in the craft brewer sector and the continuation of the new market in the wine industry means expectations for a good business year in 2013 are positive.

www.schaefer-container-systems.com

While the US beer market as a whole grew by 1 %, micro brewery beer pro-duction rose by 15 %, an additional 2.11 million hectolitres of beer. Turnover in dollars increased last year by 17%. 6.5 % of all beer produced in the entire American market comes from Craft Breweries.

In the restaurant and catering sector, consumer behaviour has changed. Beer consumption is falling. To counter this, many landlords have begun to diversify the bever-ages they offer. Rather than having just their own particular house brand, they serve a range of beers and, frequently, these are

Leading innovators with the best performance SCHÄFER WERKE were presented with the award for best perfor-mance as the KEG sector’s leading innovators by North-Rhine Westphalia’s minister for economics Garrelt Duin in November 2012 as part of the campaign “Germany at its best: North-Rhine-Westphalia”. A prominent jury selected the best per-formances from the state of North-Rhine Westphalia in business, science, culture and sport. Since entering the KEG market in the late 1970s, SCHÄFER Container Systems has had a decisive influence on the international KEG sec-tor with a series of ground-breaking innovations.

with increased export activity, leaves many brewers pondering the question of whether they should invest in new 30-litre KEGs or perhaps have their meanwhile unused stock of 50-litre KEGs modified. The increasing demand for volume reduc-tion has led to SCHÄFER Container Systems setting up a separate production line for this purpose. So now, independently of new KEG production, volume reduction orders can be fulfilled quickly, flexibly and in high quality within a few weeks. With this volume modification, which is much cheaper than the production of a new KEG, SCHÄFER Container Systems has now supplemen-ted its already extensive KEG service. The services SCHÄFER Container Systems can provide for KEGs either in-house or through partner enterprises include repairing dents in top and bottom rings, reworking defec-tive weld seams, repairing necks and fittings, polishing and calibrating KEGs, retrofitting transponders and weight adaptation.

www.schaefer-container-systems.com

No-one is at the top by chance! In February 2013, SCHÄFER WERKE won the award “World Market Leader in the sector of cylindrical reusable coated or non-coated containers in stainless steel for the beverages industry”. The SCHÄFER WERKE division Container Systems was

included in the register of “World Market Leaders and best achievements in industry from South Westphalia”. This register includes all companies shown to be the leaders in technology or numbers 1, 2 or 3 in terms of turnover in their respective markets.

Breweries with an unused stock of 50 litre stainless steel KEGs can now have them

reduced by SCHÄFER Container Systems to smaller volumes of 30 litres, for instance.

For this purpose, SCHÄFER has invested in a special production line to be able to

react quickly and flexibly to such customer wishes.

The containers are vacuum resistant and their design makes them easy to clean. Being highly pressure resistant, they can be steam cleaned and rendered completely germ free. Food ingredients, such as fruit purée, beverage bases, liquid seasonings, sauces, whey and liquid egg products can easily be filled, transported and stored aseptically. The same applies to substances processed in the cosmetics and pharmaceu-ticals industries. The use of high-grade 1.4301 / 1.4404 / 1.4571 stainless steels makes these contai-ners robust and corrosion resistant.

Water management professionals use

SCHÄFER IBC containersThe Viersen based enterprise Kurita is a global player in water management. SCHÄFER Container Systems

manufactures tailor-made stainless steel containers for the market leader.

In all activities, environmental aspects enjoy the highest priority. For Kurita, SCHÄFER Container Systems manufactures modu-lar tanks which are fully adapted to each other. Two differently sized tanks together form a so-called mother-daughter system. They can be placed on top of each other by forklift for storage or filling purposes. The lower, larger container is firmly con-nected to the water processing equipment by a flange. In the upper “daughter” contai-ner, there are the relevant chemicals for the type of processing being undertaken, which are released in doses into the lower contai-ner. When this is completed, the processed liquid is filled into the processing equip-ment through the standardised flange and valve system quickly, hygienically and with-out any losses. The chemicals the company produces for water processing must be stored and trans-ported hygienically to prevent any risk of contamination.

Water is used in countless industrial processes, from power stations and refi-neries, paper and steel production to the chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries. All these applications have their own spe-cial water quality requirements. The most important tasks include the treatment of wastewater and preventing corrosion and deposit formation.Kurita is the global market leader in the field of water and water processing. The com-pany portfolio consists of research, deve-lopment and manufacture of chemicals for water processing as well as consulting and a comprehensive range of services covering all aspects of water.Professional water and process manage-ment optimises cooling, boiler and waste- water systems and equipment in refineries and petrochemical plants, for example, through efficiency increases, concrete cost cutting and avoidance of production bott-lenecks.

Hard core

for solar energy plants

Photovoltaic plants generate direct current from the sun’s energy. To feed this electricity into national grid systems, an inverter has to convert it to the grid’s alter-nating current. Inverters are, therefore, a central element in any photovoltaic plant. Based on sophisticated design specifica-tions for the latest generation of an inverter cabinet, SCHÄFER Industrial Solutions deve-loped the first drafts, after several months of intensive dialogue with the customer, which led to 3D models, construction of prototypes and finally to a product ready for series production. Some of the inverter’s electronic components in solar plants have to be secured in IP54 rated housings to

protect them from dust and water. At the same time, the heat generated means there needs to be an intelligent air flow system in the cabinet to cool the inverter. A new type of design enabled SCHÄFER to integrate this IP-rated core into the cabinet. Compared to conventional protection solu-tions, this is a genuine cost cutter. Based on a multiannual framework con-tract, production of the cabinet system was started in Betzdorf. Assembly is the task of the customer at their own production site.

Modular

IS-1 Industrial Cabinet

Only one bolt is needed to secure the corners of the new “SCHÄFER IS-1” industrial cabinet. The specially developed slot-in design makes assembling the IS-1 much easier, even in enclosed spaces or difficult locations. The modular design allows the “SCHÄFER IS-1” to be used as a switching or control cabinet, for accommodating inverter modules or electronic components or as a basis unit for further extensions. The profiled framework makes the cabinet very strong, and the framework elements are available in a range of different sizes, enabling cabinets to be put together in a variety of heights, widths a depths. The 3-dimensional 25 mm pitch pat-tern on the elements provide a lot of scope for installing many different kinds of compo-nents. By exchanging and adding to the equipment inside, the cabinet can be modi-fied, extended and consequently adapted to changing requirements at any time after assembly. Besides offering a comprehensive range of accesso-ries, which covers shel-ves and telescope rails, power strips, lighting and door contact swit-ches as well castors and climate control, SCHÄFER Industrial Solutions designs and manufactures indivi-dual accessories on request to customer specifications.

The installation at the ColoCenter b.v. in Zoetermeer is one such best practice example. It is currently the most sustainable data centre in the Netherlands. By delivering more than 70 racks, SCHÄFER IT-Systems has contributed to the successful start of this project. ColoCenter b.v.’s business model consists of providing co-location services to companies for whom operating their own data centre is not viable. The customers rent lockable racks, which accommodate their servers. For their operation, ColoCenter b.v. provides the infrastructure, which meets the latest standards in cooling, uninterruptible power supply (uPS) and emergency power, redun-dancy and fast data links. As half and even quarter racks can be leased, the co-locations service is also affordable for small businesses. Even though ColoCenter b.v. has its head-quarters in Rotterdam, the small town of Zoetermeer was chosen deliberately as the data centre location, because there are not only a lot of IT companies there, it is also easily accessible from the so-called “Randstad” – the four largest Dutch cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and utrecht. There are various factors contributing to Colo-Center b.v.'s exceptional sustainabi-lity. Firstly, the company gets its electricity from Greenchoice, a certified supplier of power from renewable energy sources and, secondly, this energy is used very effi-ciently in the uSV and cooling systems. The

Markets1 8 dialog 01| 13

air conditioning operates with free cooling, in which external air is guided directly into the cooling system. For the major part of the year the system uses cool external air and for the rest of the time, a water-based cooling system is switched on. This revolutionary approach uses no compressors or pumps whatsoever, nor any environmentally hazar-dous liquids or gases. A higher air-flow rate in the data centre means more efficient cooling and the perfo-rated rack doors enable the cold air to reach the server hotspots and switches more easily. The perforation of the SCHÄFER IT-Systems racks achieves the 80 % air permeability that ColoCenter b.v. had set as its objective.

The Netherlands’ most sustainable data center

uses SCHÄFER racksData center sustainability and energy efficiency are a big topic in the Netherlands. The government has drawn up

appropriate objectives for companies and published best practice examples for achieving them.

Converting the existing building into the new data centre began on 1. April 2012. The first racks were delivered in the first week of July and installed over the following weeks. On August 8th., the first customer went “on air”. To keep to this ambitious schedule, reliable partners were needed. Besides their good price/performance ratio, SCHÄFER IT-Systems’ flexible, customer-oriented approach proved to be extremely helpful in the realisation of the project. “The fact that both partners were doing pioneering work in a new market also contributed to this deal being concluded,” said ColoCenter b.v director Alexander Lantink. This important data centre in Zoetermeer comprises 54

whole racks, as well as 10 others divided into halves and a further ten cabinets divi-ded into quarters. This makes the project an important stepping stone for SCHÄFER IT-Systems to establish itself as an impor-tant supplier of data centre infrastructure in the, for SCHÄFER, still relatively new Dutch market. Alexander Lantink is quite empha-tic: “I am quite definitely satisfied with the quality and would certainly choose Schäfer again in the future”.

www.schaefer-it-systems.com

It was the absolute eye-catcher on the SCHÄFER IT-Systems stand at this year’s CeBIT: the IS-1, forerunner of SCHÄFER’s new range of 19-inch IT cabinets for server and network components. True to the slogan “IT’s bigger InSide”, the IS-1, with 43 u, has more internal height units than its predeces-sors, while maintaining the same external height of 2 metres. It also has a larger useable internal width, which makes assembly and cable routing more comfortable, quicker and easier. The profile is also designed to make assem-bly or disassembly of the new IS-1-faster, as there is only one bolt in each frame corner that needs to be tightened or released. Its electrical conductibility also makes the cabinet suitable for EMC applications. With the hinges on the cabinet wall exterior, the doors of the IS-1 have an opening angle of 180°. The plinth panels are held in place by clips, rather than screws and the design allows the baying of additional cabinets on all sides. This means the IS-1 can be used together with SCHÄFER IT-Systems’ tried and tested SP and PX rack series. “The specially developed slot-in design makes assembling the IS-1 much easier, even in enclosed spaces or difficult locations. This makes the new cabinets ideal for smaller server rooms as well as large data centers. Our new range enables compact server systems to be accommodated in a compact cabinet”, explains Peter Wäsch, head of sales at SCHÄFER IT-Systems. Thanks to its profiled framework, the cabinet is very strong, with a load bearing capacity of 1,500 kilos and IP54 rating. This fulfils the latest tender specifications, which require a load bearing capacity of over one ton per rack, due largely to the high packing density of modern blade servers. The cabinets are available in standard heights of 1,200, 1,800, 2,000 and 2,200 mm,

widths of 300, 600, 700 and 800 mm and depths of 600, 900, 1,000 and 1,200 mm, depending on the selected frame profiles. The available colours are RAL7035 (light grey) and RAL 9005 (black). Optional lifting rings on the top cover corners ensure easier hand-ling and safer transport before, during and after assembly. The bottom modules are adjustable and a two-piece top cover panel provides optimal cable entry, while at the same time closing the cabinet securely.

With a diverse network of partner enterprises, including the Betzdorf-based proRZ, Stulz, the Hamburg climate control specialist, and Wagner from Langenhagen, technology leader in fire protection, SCHÄFER IT-Systems has many years of expertise at its disposal in the planning, con-struction and equipping of high-availability data centres. When it comes to IT security and preventing downtimes, however, there is a lot to improve on, as was demonstrated spectacularly by the events in the Siegen area in January of this year: after a data centre fire, landline and company telepho-nes, internet connections, EC terminals and cash machines and even radio stations failed completely. The incident highlighted an often neglected problem: the volume of data generated worldwide by our information

Infrastructure professionals

on data center security

technology is growing day by day. Increasing computer performance and expanding data centres are the direct consequence. Simul-taneously, the economy is more dependent on IT processes than ever before. Safety measures, such as fire and access prevention, power supply or cooling technology often can't keep pace and quickly reach the limits of their capabilities. This is a great risk for businesses, and one that can threaten their very existence, because failures mean losses in productivity and turnover, deteriorating customer relations and insurance claims that can quickly surpass the million mark. The tolerance limits of availability class VK4, de-fined by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) as allowing a maximum annual downtime tolerance of 6 minutes, are rea-ched alarmingly quickly in the event of a fire.

Every business that has to do without its most important IT systems for 10 days will disappear from the market

within 3 to 5 years, according to a study by the META-Group. All businesses today must ask themselves what their

maximum tolerable IT downtimes are.

In this article, we’d like to give you some information about socially sustainable and ecological developments at SCHÄFER WERKE. An environment management system is valuable in itself, but mean-while it has also become a mark of quality for products and services which is highly regarded by customers. But what does “sustainability” actually mean? It stands for a devel-opment that meets the needs of today's generation, without com-

Combined heat and power plant (CHP) in Betzdorf – SCHÄFER invests in a sustainable energy supply

At the Betzdorf plant, a CHP unit of the Vitobloc type was put into operation in Sep-tember 2012. With a gas-driven 6-cylinder inline engine, the CHP generates up to 199 kW of electricity. The heat generated by the motor is drawn off and fed into the heating system. The purpose of the CHP is to provide efficient heating for the iron phosphatising

promising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. (summarized from the Brundtland Report of 1987). Core elements of this are the worldwide fight against poverty and the recognition that economic growth has ecological limits, because the earth’s natural resources and its capacity for absorbing pollution are also limited. Our goal is achieving sustainable development – not achieving growth at the expense of our environment!

Environmental and energy management:

We create sustainable benefits

Efficient

Shop floor lighting in BetzdorfThe shop floor lighting at the produc-tion facilities in Betzdorf, which up to now consisted of 367 HQL lamps has been converted to a modern fluorescent lighting system. This move considerably increased the illumination level in all areas of the plant. On top of this, effi-cient technology reduced the energy required for lighting by 52 %, which means a 180-ton cut in the amount of climate-damaging CO2.

We are currently working on the certification of the DIN ISO 14001 environmental management system for SCHÄFER WERKE, to give our customers the reassurance that our organisation works sustainably and ecologically in all our operational processes and in all business divisions.

Schools would often like to offer more subjects than their budgets allow. SCHÄFER WERKE is aware of this problem and con-sequently donated PCs and flat screens to various Siegerland schools over the past few months. The children at Salchendorf Primary School and their headmaster Herr Michael utsch were so pleased that they invited their PC donor back to school. The SCHÄFER WERKE management saw how the PCs were being used and, in addition to the children’s smiling eyes, were treated to a few songs from the “future computer geniuses” as a token of their thanks. Apart from PCs, the management had another present with them. The so-called “KisTe.” This project was launched by the KM:SI, the business promotion organisation for the Siegen-Wittgenstein region of competence, with the aim of attracting young people to techni-cal professions at an early stage. This “experiment” box contained a number of objects for conducting scientific experiments. The costs of Salchendorf Primary School’s “KisTe” are being covered by SCHÄFER WERKE who are very pleased to be part of such a successful educational project.

Dealing with social media platforms like Facebook, Xing, Twitter or YouTube are part of normal life for many of us today. Businesses have also discovered these channels as a component in their corpo-rate communication. The SCHÄFER WERKE GROuP has an account on the business platform XING as well as its own YouTube

Social Media – dealing responsibly with

channel. Public communications channels like these open up lots of new opportu-nities, but they also have their risks. using social networks requires a high level of responsibility and is subject to certain rules.

For this reason, we ask that all our employ-ees always observe the following rules:nProtect yourself and your privacy nBe careful of your own reputation and that of our Group of companies nAlways make any statements in the first person, using “I think, I say, etc.”, to make it clear that this is your personal opinion and not that of the company nDo not disclose any confidential information about our company, staff, customers or suppliers

There is scarcely a development that offers so much potential for change as social media. The possibility for everyone to com-municate with everyone else all over the world has numerous repercussions – good as well as bad.
