Introduction – what is Functional Skills English and why do it. What are we aiming for?
Introduction to the FS L1 English standards and assessments. Literacy Diagnostic (if not already undertaken) – to be completed for homework if necessary

Reading strategies– skimming, scanning and detailed reading. – identifying the main points and purpose
Skimming, scanning and detailed reading of different texts, identifying the main points and purpose. Skim job adverts to identify relevant job titles. Scan job adverts for additional information (e.g. location, salary). Read adverts in detail to check you meet the requirements and highlight main points. Apply learnt techniques to a range of texts.

Writing – getting it in the right order and drafting text
Look at the impact incorrectly ordered text has. Re-order text. Write a diary for the day. Plan writing a piece of text in different ways and write text.

Writing – the ‘nitty gritty’ an introduction to grammar, punctuation and spelling
Look back at the written work from last week, proof read and analyse it. List any errors and the reason

Punctuation – capital letters, full stops, sentences, question marks, exclamation marks, commas, apostrophes and other punctuation
Review poorly punctuated texts, identify errors and correct. Punctuate texts to convey required meaning/emphasis

Grammar – meaning, adverbs, negatives, verb tenses, complex and compound sentences, subject/verb agreement
