2012 International Certification Programme
In Schema Therapy
Schema Therapy Workshops Arnie Reed, PsychD, Director
Chris Hayes, MPsych (Clinical), Director
Programme Overview
Schema Therapy Workshops is pleased to welcome you to its 2012 International Certification
Programme in Schema Therapy. This training programme will provide individualised training over
a one or two-year period, leading to a diploma documenting that you are eligible to become either
an Advanced Certified Schema Therapist or a Standard Certified Schema Therapist in the
International Society for Schema Therapy (ISST). The Schema Therapy Workshops Certification
Programme is approved by the International Society of Schema Therapy.
The curriculum includes workshops in London or Manchester; regular supervision sessions (by
telephone, Skype, or in-person); readings; DVDs; and periodic ratings of recorded client sessions.
The training programme, under the direction of Arnie Reed, PsychD, and Chris Hayes, MPsych
(Clinical), is conducted by an experienced faculty of Advanced Schema Therapy Supervisors with
extensive experience in schema therapy.
The International Certification Programme in Schema Therapy is appropriate for experienced
mental health professionals, and is open to professionals with doctoral or master’s level degrees in
mental health fields. Applicants should have intermediate or advanced levels of general
psychotherapy experience.
About Schema Therapy
Schema therapy is an innovative, integrated therapeutic approach, originally developed as an
expansion of traditional cognitive-behavioural treatments. It draws from cognitive-behavioural
therapy, attachment theory, psychodynamic concepts, and emotion-focused therapies. In
comparison to cognitive-behavioural therapy, schema therapy emphasises lifelong patterns,
affective change techniques, and the therapeutic relationship, with special emphasis on limited
reparenting.
Schema therapy is particularly well-suited for difficult, so called treatment-resistant clients with
entrenched, chronic psychological disorders, including personality disorders (such as BPD and
narcissism), eating disorders, intractable couples' problems, and criminal offenders. It is also
effective for relapse prevention in depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The results of a major
comparative outcome study have shown schema therapy to be highly effective with a large
2
percentage of outpatients with Borderline Personality Disorder, with a low dropout rate. Clients
who have spent years gaining valuable insight with psychodynamic treatments, but who are
frustrated by their lack of progress, often respond well to the active, systematic, flexible, and depth-
oriented schema approach.
About the Main Trainers
Arnie Reed, PsychD, Chartered Counselling Psychologist,
Certified Schema Therapist and Clinical Supervisor
Arnie enjoyed a military career before pursuing a second career in Psychology. After leaving the
Army, he completed his BSc in Behavioural Sciences in 1998 and his Practitioner Doctorate in
Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Psychology (at the University of Surrey) in 2001. Searching for
the most useful interventions to fit the unique presenting difficulties of clients, Arnie completed a
post-graduate diploma course (at UCL) in Applied Hypnosis, received training in EMDR and
completed the National Intensive DBT Training. Along with Chris, Arnie attended the first
International Schema Therapy Certification course at the Schema Therapy Institute in New York
and was trained directly by Dr Jeffrey Young. Arnie is a fully certified Schema Therapist and trainer,
and full member of the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST). He currently works in a
Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) in Cardiff and also has a busy private practice. Arnie now
specialises in complex client presentations including those clients diagnosed with Borderline
Personality Disorder and so-called treatment-resistant difficulties. He has contributed to the
development of a local NHS BPD Service. Arnie teaches schema therapy on the South Wales PsychD
in Clinical Psychology and on the Newport University CBT MSc course. He is co-director of Schema
Therapy Workshops, which delivers Schema Therapy training and supervision in the UK.
Chris Hayes, MPsych (Clinical) Clinical Psychologist and Accredited CBT Therapist, Certified
Schema Therapist and Clinical Supervisor
Chris has had over 10 years of experience working with complex cases using Schema Therapy in
both the UK and Australia. He has had extensive experience in both government and private
settings working with clients with complex psychological presentations. In Perth, Western
Australia, Chris worked within a specialist service for clients with substance abuse and comorbid
psychological problems, and helped establish a specialist team focusing on emerging Personality
Disorders. Following his move to the UK, Chris worked in a senior role within a CBT team at a
leading private London hospital. He has also worked as a lecturer within the School of Psychology
at Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia, and has provided Schema Therapy input
and training to the Clinical Psychology programme at University College London. He received
specialist advanced training directly by Dr Jeff Young at the Schema Therapy Institute in New York
City (USA). Chris is one of a small handful of fully certified Schema Therapists and Trainers
currently working in the UK, and is a full member of the International Society of Schema Therapy
(ISST). He currently works primarily in private practice in London, providing treatment as well
as supervision in Schema Therapy. He is co-director of Schema Therapy Workshops, which
delivers Schema Therapy training throughout the British Isles.

Evangelia (Litsa) Anthis, PsychD, Chartered Counselling Psychologist,
Certified Schema Therapist and Clinical Supervisor
Litsa qualified as a social worker in South Africa prior to moving to the UK. She continued her
studies in psychology and obtained her Practitioners Doctorate in Counselling Psychology with a
specialization in psychodermatology. During this time she worked extensively in the NHS, in areas
of specialist health services, lectured on post-graduate courses and supervised counselling
psychology students. She received training in EMDR, obtained a diploma in clinical supervision, and
along with Chris and Arnie attended the first international Schema Therapy Certification Course at
the Schema Therapy Institute in New York. She was trained by Jeffrey Young and is a fully certified
schema therapist. Five years ago, Litsa moved to Greece and has promoted the development of
psychological services in various settings. She was Head of EAP Services in the business sector, has
set up a counselling psychology service in a major dermatology hospital and is President of the
Patient Psoriasis Association in Greece. Currently she lectures in schema therapy at the Institute of
Research and Behaviour, and has a private practice providing schema therapy treatment and
supervision. In particular, she specializes in clients with long term characterological difficulties,
including clients diagnosed with BPD and individuals with chronic health problems
Key Components & Requirements for the 2012 Programme
Advanced Certification Programme
The Advanced Certification programme is suitable for all experienced mental health
professionals, and is open to professionals with doctoral or master's (or equivalent) level
qualifications/experience in mental health fields. It is essential that you already hold a qualification
(such as one gained through the BPS, BAC, BABCP etc), that allows you to practice counselling/
psychotherapy/applied psychology etc. Participants should have intermediate or advanced levels of
general psychotherapy experience. There are a limited number of training places available on
the Advanced Certification route. Please note that only applicants regularly working with
personality-disordered clients , and are able to work with them long-term, have been considered
and your selection for a training place has been based, in part, on this requirement. Please also be
aware that this training programme is an intensive and rigorous programme of training,
supervision and assessment. From the outset it will require strong commitment, personal
reflection, absorption in the model and application.
1. Two intensive weekend workshops, each consisting of three days (Thursday, Friday &
Saturday). These workshops are mandatory and will be held in London and Manchester.
Trainees may choose which venue (i.e. either London or Manchester – or a mix of both) to
attend.
2. 40 hours of individual supervision, each 50-60 minutes in length. These may be conducted
face-to-face, by telephone, or by Skype (or equivalent). The supervision sessions must
continue for at least one year on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
3. A total of six video or audio recordings of client therapy sessions, to be submitted at regular
intervals, each accompanied by a completed Schema Case Conceptualisation form. The
final two of the six recorded sessions will be scored by an independent rater other than
4
your supervisor (arranged by Schema Therapy Workshops), and the Schema Therapist
Competency Scale (STCS) must average minimum of 4.5 (out of a possible 6 points). With
regard to the final two recorded sessions, trainees who submit recordings that are not
acceptable can submit new sessions to be rated after at least 1 month, at their own expense,
until they obtain passing scores.
4. During the Programme a minimum of 4 cases must be treated with schema therapy lasting
at least 25 therapy hours each: at least one of the cases must be BPD and one must be
another PD and has to be periodically angry, demeaning, critical or aggressive towards the
therapist (e.g. narcissistic, anti-social). The total for all Schema Therapy sessions with all
clients must be at least 160 hours.
5. Readings and DVD viewing directly related to schema therapy, as well as other readings that
provide a broad conceptual background in a variety of approaches relevant to the schema
model.
6. This training is intensive and is not simply an attendance-only-based training programme.
It cannot be stressed too much that from the outset, it is important that trainees recognize
the need for full and comprehensive engagement in all aspects of it, including their own
home/work –based study.
Advanced Certification Cost: £4,200 - This includes all training, supervision and ratings of
recorded sessions. It does not cover travel and overnight expenses. Candidates will be responsible
for all travel expenses to the training venue, including fares, lodging and meals, and will make all of
their own travel arrangements. Candidates will also pay all telephone charges for supervision, and
postage for the mailing of recorded sessions. Candidates will be required to purchase a relatively
inexpensive digital audio recorder approved by us if they plan to make audio recordings of sessions.
If your training has been funded by the NHS Trust, or organisation you work in, it is not
transferrable to another person. If for example, you begin the training and subsequently leave that
organisation, money or a place on workshops or supervision time could not be transferred from
you to another person. The services (i.e. training days and supervision time) purchased for an
individual in the Trust or organisation would stay with the individual and would not be
transferrable.
Invoicing
Please be aware that due to some supervision arrangements it is a possibility that you or your organization will receive 2 invoices rather that just one. If this is the case the invoiced total will not exceed £4200. These would be:
In some cases you or your organization will receive only one invoice for the full amount. This would be:
1. £4,200 to Schema Therapy Workshops

professionals, and is open to professionals with doctoral or master's (or equivalent) level
qualifications/experience in mental health fields. It is essential that you already hold a qualification

the Standard Certification route. Please note that only applicants regularly working with
personality-disordered clients , and are able to work with them long-term, have been considered

Standard Certification Cost: £2,600 - This includes all training, supervision and ratings of
recorded sessions. It does not cover travel and overnight expenses. Candidates will be responsible
for all travel expenses to the training venue, including fares, lodging and meals, and will make all of

Please be aware that due to some supervision arrangements it is a possibility that you or your organization will receive 2 invoices rather that just one. These would be:
1. £900 for the 2 x 3 day workshops, to Schema Therapy Workshops.
2. £1,700 payable directly to your supervisor.
In some cases you or your organization will receive only one invoice for the full amount. This would be:

Missed/Non attended Supervision Sessions The certification packages include a total of 20 (for Standard Certification) and 40 (for Advanced Certification) supervision sessions (ISST requirements). Supervisors will make themselves available and arrange the correct number of sessions to meet the ISST requirements. If scheduled sessions are missed for some reason, they have to be rescheduled to ensure the correct amount of sessions is received. Supervisees are requested to give supervisors at least 24 hours notice prior to cancelling sessions. Failing to do this will result in supervisees being liable for missed sessions. Extra sessions, in order to ensure the full ISST-compliant supervision programme, will be charged at the standard rate of £85 Sterling.
