Guidelines for Course Selection1. Students must select the required courses for graduation first.(Math, Science,

Social Studies, English)2. Physical Education (PE), Health, or Computer applications are also required for

graduation and need to be scheduled if they have not taken them yet. 3. Descriptions of courses are in the course selection guide that was handed out

to students.4. Read the description of each course selected and be familiar with the correct

sequences for the grade level. (Use the Scope and Sequence table in this presentation or page 8 in your course selection guide.)

5. Always check course prerequisites in the course selection guide before selecting a course.

•Graduation RequirementsAll students are required to have the following:

• 28 Credits Minimum - These are gained by passing courses you are scheduled in from year to year.

• Students must also meet all Keystone Test requirements as designated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. In your course selection guide these courses are identified by two asterisks (**)

• Class rank is the position of any one student in a graduating class to all other students in that class based on a weighted grade point average (GPA).

• Class rank is calculated at the end of each quarter and is cumulative for your high school career.

• Class rank and GPA are sometimes used as criteria for colleges to determine acceptance.

• Weighted Courses: higher level courses carry an extra weight because they tend to be more academically challenging (identified in your course selection guide with {**} two red asterisks)

• Cumulative Credits: total of completed credits from ninth grade until now (A course must be finished and passed with 60% or higher final average{FAV} to receive the credit(s).)

• Grading Scale: translates your percentage grade to a letter grade and determines what is passing/failing

• Test Record: Keystone assessments are replacing PSSA’s

This will include scores of standardized assessments if Taken while in high school suchas Keystones, SAT, or ACT.

•Students who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

• If your student has special needs or an(IEP) and is in a class not listed on the previous scope and sequence slide by subject the next slide may be helpful.

• Support services, accommodations and adaptations necessary for each special student to be successful are specified in an (IEP) developed annually.

• If your student is currently in a small specifically structured classroom with modifications for a subject, they would usually be scheduled in the next course in the sequence unless changes were discussed in the yearly IEP meeting.

•Honors & Advanced Courses

• These courses are identified in the course selection guide and will have the weight defined in the description of 1.1 or 1.2.

• Teacher signature is required if your student chooses to take an Honors or Advanced course.

• This will need to be done even in the event that your student is already in an honors or advanced course.

*Approval is needed due to the course(s) being very challenging and requiring a higher level of preparation and increased amount of work.
