A Little Bit of Guidance. John Wesley (1703-1791), the Founder of Methodism, considered the study of Scripture vital for any disciple of Jesus Christ. In fact, he had much to say on this subject. In his “Preface to Explanatory Notes Upon the Old Testament” he gives the following guidance for all who seek to be effective in their study of Scripture. Wesley’s advice is now over 300 years old – but it still is good for us to hear today! If you desire to read the Scripture in such a manner as may most effectually answer this end, would it not be advisable, 1. To set apart a little time, if you can, every morning and evening for that purpose? 2. At each time if you have leisure, to read a chapter out of the Old, and one out of the New Testament: if you cannot do this, to take a single chapter, or a part of one? 3. To read this with a single eye, to know the whole will of God, and a fixed resolution to do it? In order to know his will, you should, 4. Have a constant eye to the analogy of faith; the connection and harmony there is between those grand, fundamental doctrines, Original Sin, Justification by Faith, the New Birth, Inward and Outward Holiness. 5. Serious and earnest prayer should be constantly used, before we consult the oracles of God, seeing “Scripture can only be understood thro’ the same Spirit whereby it was given.” Our reading should likewise be closed with prayer, that what we read may be written on our hearts. 6. It might also be of use, if while we read, we were frequently to pause, and examine ourselves by what we read, both with regard to our hearts, and lives. This would furnish us with matter of praise, where we found God had enabled us to conform to his blessed will, and matter of humiliation and prayer, where we were conscious of having fallen short. And whatever light you then receive, should be used to the uttermost, and that immediately. Let there be no delay. Whatever you resolve, begin to execute the first moment you can. So shall you find this word to be indeed the power of God unto present and eternal salvation. - John Wesley May we all take Wesley’s advice and seek to be transformed by the reading of God’s Word! A Little Bit of Guidance.

John Wesley (1703-1791), the Founder of Methodism, considered the study of

Scripture vital for any disciple of Jesus Christ. In fact, he had much to say on this

subject. In his “Preface to Explanatory Notes Upon the Old Testament” he gives

the following guidance for all who seek to be effective in their study of Scripture.

Wesley’s advice is now over 300 years old – but it still is good for us to hear today!

If you desire to read the Scripture in such a manner as may most effectually

answer this end, would it not be advisable,

1. To set apart a little time, if you can, every morning and evening for

that purpose?

2. At each time if you have leisure, to read a chapter out of the Old,

and one out of the New Testament: if you cannot do this, to take a

single chapter, or a part of one?

3. To read this with a single eye, to know the whole will of God, and a

fixed resolution to do it? In order to know his will, you should,

4. Have a constant eye to the analogy of faith; the connection and

harmony there is between those grand, fundamental doctrines,

Original Sin, Justification by Faith, the New Birth, Inward and

Outward Holiness.

5. Serious and earnest prayer should be constantly used, before we

consult the oracles of God, seeing “Scripture can only be

understood thro’ the same Spirit whereby it was given.” Our reading

should likewise be closed with prayer, that what we read may be

written on our hearts.

6. It might also be of use, if while we read, we were frequently to

pause, and examine ourselves by what we read, both with regard to

our hearts, and lives. This would furnish us with matter of praise,

where we found God had enabled us to conform to his blessed will,

and matter of humiliation and prayer, where we were conscious of

having fallen short.

And whatever light you then receive, should be used to the uttermost, and that

immediately. Let there be no delay. Whatever you resolve, begin to execute

the first moment you can. So shall you find this word to be indeed the power

of God unto present and eternal salvation. - John Wesley

May we all take Wesley’s advice and seek to be transformed by the reading of

God’s Word! I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Merge Retreat 2017

Hey Church Family,

I would like to take a few minutes to talk about our

recent Merge Retreat over spring break. The

Merge Retreat was a collaborative project

between the youth ministry and the children’s

ministry. Over the past several years Kim has

always done great job of planning a confirmation

retreat to spend time focusing on and discussing

core beliefs and values with the confirmands. But

this year we also wanted to use the retreat to

begin the process of merging the sixth graders

into the youth ministry before they promoted in

June. Therefore we launched the Merge Retreat

and invited the youth leadership team (Z Team) to

attend the trip as well. I have to say it was a very

proud moment for me as the youth pastor at

FUMC. The high school students did such a

fantastic job. I had the privilege of watching the

confirmands and high school students spend time

laughing and playing games, studying God’s word

together, and speaking words of encouragement

to one another. I have no doubt the when the sixth

graders promote into the youth ministry the will

already have a group of friends who are excited

and ready to welcome them to The Uprising.

Volunteers Needed We are looking for volunteers to help serve on Sunday Morning as a • Communion Server • Lay leader • Prayer Room Warrior If you are interested in serving in any

of these areas, please email Sarah Tirey @ [email protected]. If you already serve in one of these areas, you do not need to put your name down. This is just an opportunity for those not currently plugged in to be added to the rotation lists. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask a FUMC staff

member. We are here to help!

Bereavement Committee We have many new people and some may have questions. If so you can call Guylene Griffin the head of the bereavement committee at 806-655-9818 or email

her at [email protected] or Vivian Thurman at 806-655-9038 or email [email protected]. This is open to both men and women to help set up and clean up.
