Dave CallowayHEAD COACH • MONMOUTH, 1991 • 14TH SEASON • 173-213 OVERALL / NEC RECORD: 122-113
In his 14th season as head coach, Dave Calloway has registered a
173-213 overall record. Calloway became Monmouth’s head coach
in 1998 after serving as assistant coach for six-plus seasons. Cal-
loway led Monmouth to a 21-10 season and an NCAA Tournament
appearance in 2000-01, earning NEC Coach of the Year honors.
In 2004, he led the Hawks back to the pinnacle of the NEC with a
21-12 mark and the school’s third NCAA Tournament appearance
and fi rst NEC regular-season title. MU’s climb continued in 2006,
as the Hawks won the NEC Tournament for a fourth time and went
on to defeat Hampton in the NCAA Opening Round, before falling
to top-seeded Villanova in the fi rst round. Calloway enjoyed a stel-
lar playing career at Monmouth, logging 1,404 points and ranking
14th on MU’s all-time scoring list. His point total ranks seventh in
the Hawks’ Division I era. During his playing career, MU compiled
a 67-48 record and posted a winning mark all four years. Calloway, who earned Academic All-
American honors as a junior, still holds career and single-season three-point shooting records
at Monmouth.
CLIMBING UPAfter starting his career 3-29, Calloway pushed his coaching record over the .500 mark, by
recording six consecutive winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2005-06. That streak marked just
the second time the Hawks have strung together fi ve or more winning years since moving to
Division I in the mid-80’s.
CAREER HAWKCalloway has spent 24 years with the program (player, assistant and head coach).
ALL OR NOTHING... ALMOSTFor the most part, it has been all or nothing for Dave Calloway at the NEC Tournament. He owns
a 10-7 record in the tournament, going 9-0 during MU’s three NEC Championship runs (2001,
2004, 2006), but bowing out in the opening round in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2008 and 2010.
2005 was the fi rst year Calloway recorded a win, but did not go on to win the championship,
bowing out to Wagner, 63-60, in the semis.
MONMOUTH MENTORSHIPCalloway, who has led the Monmouth program to three NEC Championships as a head coach
(and was an assistant coach during the 1996 title season), has guided the Hawks to three NCAA
Tournament appearances. An Academic All-American during his playing days, Calloway has
mentored two NEC Players of the Year (Rahsaan Johnson - 2001 and Blake Hamilton - 2005),
two NEC Rookies of the Year (Alpha Bangura - 1999 and Jhamar Youngblood - 2006) and a
Defensive Player of the Year (Kevin Owens - 2003).
TOUGH STARTSUnder Calloway, MU annually plays a tough out-of-conference schedule. Since 1998-99, Cal-
loway’s fi rst full season, the Hawks are 40-88 in non-conference games. Some impact wins:
Princeton (3), Akron, Vanderbilt, Hofstra (2), Hampton, Southern Illinois, Loyola Marymount,
Wichita State, Charlotte, FIU, Wyoming, Penn, Lehigh and Eastern Michigan. Some high-profi le
defeats: Penn, Gonzaga, Boston College, Notre Dame, Miami, Nebraska, UNLV, Maryland, Seton
Hall, South Carolina, Loyola Marymount, San Diego State, Clemson, Houston and Rutgers (in
ot).
AS A YOUNGSTER...Calloway was one of former coach Wayne Szoke's prize recruits as a sharpshooting guard from
St. Joseph's High School. He tallied 1,458 career points and had his jersey number retired by
the school. His prep career included South Jersey Player of the Year honors, along with a Cape
Atlantic League and South Jersey Parochial B title. In 2001, Calloway was inducted into the St.
Joseph's High School Hall of Fame.

HAWKS IN THE PRESEASON COACHES POLLMonmouth was selected tenth in the Northeast Conference 2010-11 preseason coaches poll, based on voting conducted by the league’s head coaches. After cap-turing its fi rst-ever NEC regular season crown a year ago, Quinnipiac was picked unanimously to win the 2011 Championship, as the preseason rankings, along with the league’s preseason all-conference team, were announced during a media tele-conference with coaches this afternoon as a prelude to the NEC’s 30th anniversary season.
Two-time defending NEC Tournament champion Robert Morris was tabbed second, followed by Long Island in third. Central Connecticut State was picked fourth, ahead of Mount St. Mary’s in fi fth and Fairleigh Dickinson in the sixth spot. St. Francis (N.Y.) and Saint Francis (Pa.) tied for seventh in the poll, and were followed by Sa-cred Heart in ninth, Monmouth in tenth, Wagner in eleventh and Bryant in twelfth.
Quinnipiac becomes the NEC’s fi rst unanimous favorite since Long Island in 1997-98. It also marks the second time in its 13-year history with the conference that the Bobcats have been installed as the preseason favorite.
BASEMENT DWELLERIn the last four seasons, Monmouth has been picked ninth or lower in the pre-season poll. In 2007-08, Monmouth was picked 10th in the NEC Preseason Poll, which was the lowest in the NEC preseason coaches poll since 1999-2000 when it was voted 11th in a 12-team league. That year, Monmouth was coming off a 5-21 season (5-15 in the NEC), when the Hawks held the nation’s longest losing streak (19 games).
FRESH FACESIn 2007-08, in its season-opener at Colgate, Monmouth started a freshman for the fi rst time since November 21, 2000, when Jason Krayl earned a starting nod at Rider. That game also marked the fi rst time since 1998, Dave Calloway’s fi rst full season as head coach, the Hawks gave the starting nod to multiple rookies. 2008-09 marked the second straight year in which the Hawks started a rookie in the opening game, as Mike Myers Keitt got the nod at forward against FAU (11/14).
THE MATCHUPUtilizing its trademark matchup, Monmouth annually ranks among the NEC leaders in scoring defense. In fact, MU has led the NEC in the category in 14 of the last 22 years, including two years ago (67.1 ppg). The Hawks fi nished last season ranked sixth in that category (66.6) - only 3.4 ppg behind league-leading Mount St. Mary’s. MU is allowing 65.2 ppg after 11 games this year to rank third in the NEC.
ON THE AIRHawk basketball games can be heard live on Hawks Radio. The fl agship station is WMCX-FM (88.9) in West Long Branch. All games are broadcast by a corps of Mon-mouth University students.
HAWKS GAMES ONLINE - AUDIO/VIDEOHawks’ fans can listen to live audio of Monmouth basketball online. The radio broad-cast of all MU basketball games can be heard live on-line on the offi cial website of Monmouth’s student radio station WMCX, www.wmcx.com. Once again, all Mon-mouth men’s and women’s home basketball games (except televised contests) will be available on GoMUHawks.com, via webstreaming (fees apply).
LEADING SCORERMonmouth’s top returning scorer is junior guard Will Campbell (11.2 ppg in 2009-10), who also has the highest career-point total of all returning players. The guard, who has 614 career points, has started 23 games in the Blue and White, and fi n-ished 2010 ranked 20th in the league in scoring.
TEAM CAPTAINSAt a team meal in early November, Monmouth’s team captains were selected by the roster. The senior trio of Nick DelTufo, James Hett and R.J. Rutledge were chosen.
BLACKJACKOn December 14, 2005, MU’s vaunted matchup zone made national headlines, as the Hawks held Princeton to just 21 points in an MU victory. The 21 points equaled the lowest total by a Division I team since the introduction of the 3-point line for the 1986-87 season, until Saint Louis’ 20-point outburst (1/10/08) against George Washington knocked MU off that pedastal. Coastal Carolina held Georgia Southern to just 21 points in a 61-21 win on January 2, 1997.

MU vs. RANKED TEAMSMonmouth’s loss at No. 20 Villanova (11/25/08), dropped the Hawks’ record to 0-16 all-time vs. Top 25 squads. Monmouth’s last game versus a ranked-opponent came against No. 3 Villanova in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. In the 2004 NCAA Tournament fi rst round, the Hawks lost 85-52 to then No. 9 Mississippi State in Orlando. In 2001-02, Monmouth hosted No. 22 Gonzaga, marking the fi rst time that a team ranked in the top 25 had ever made an appearance at Boylan Gym. Monmouth lost the game, 79-54. That same season, Monmouth also lost to No. 2 Maryland, 91-55, at Cole Fieldhouse. At the 2001 NCAA East Regional, the Hawks dropped a 95-52 decision to No. 1 ranked Duke. During the 1999-2000 season, Monmouth lost to No. 25 Miami (Fla.), 67-46 and No. 20 DePaul, 69-62. In 1995-96, Monmouth lost to No. 20 Duke, 69-53, in the regular season and No. 20 Marquette, 68-44, in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawks have also lost to No. 25 St. John’s (85-60 - 11/23/90), No. 18 Iowa (55-46 - 12/30/89), No. 18 North Carolina State (95-50 - 12/27/88), No. 11 St. John’s (98-58 - 12/23/85), No. 17 Georgia Tech (96-66 - 1/17/85) and No. 6 Georgetown (75-54 - 1/9/84).
MOVING UP THE NEC CHARTDave Calloway moved into fourth place on the Northeast Conference list of all-time regular-season league wins with 122, surpassing Basketball Hall of Famer Jim Phelan (116), and Dave Magarity (117 wins). Next on the list for Calloway is former St. Francis [N.Y.] head man, Ron Ganulin (129).
SIX PACK OF WINSThe Hawks strung together six consecutive winning seasons from 2000-01 through 2005-06, winning three NEC titles. It marked the fi rst time the Blue and White posted six straight winning marks since moving to D-I in 1983-84.
IT’S CALLED CHARITY, CUZ THEY ARE “FREE” THROWSThe school season-record for free throw percentage is 77.1%, set during the 1990-91 and 2004-05 seasons. Monmouth fi nished last season connecting on 68.5% (416-607) from the line. The Hawks are shooting worse so far this year, connecting on just 58.9% (116-197) after 11 games. Monmouth’s worst-ever showing was in 2001-02 when the team hit 64.9% from the line.
70-BELOWMonmouth, which prides itself on defense, maintains that it will always give itself a chance to win if it holds opponents to under 70 points. MU surrendered 70+ 14 times last season, including seven 80+ outings, and was 3-11 in those games. The Hawks, who surrendered 70+ points to Hartford in double overtime, Rider and Rutgers, are 3-5 when holding teams under 70.
THREE DECADES ON THE SIDELINESAssistant coach Ron Krayl is now in his 34th season on the sidelines for the Hawks. The mastermind behind the Hawks’ matchup zone defense, Krayl scored over 2,300 points in his playing days at Sioux Falls. A draftee in both the ABA and the NBA (Philadelphia 76ers), Krayl also played during his service with the U.S. Army, with the likes of Mike Krzyzewski and Fran Dunphy.
O-FER AGAINST THE BIG EASTMonmouth is now 0-37 against teams from the BIG EAST Conference after its loss to Rutgers (12/18/10). The Hawks gave themselves a chance to earn a victory in 2007-08, falling at Seton Hall in OT. MU took Rutgers to overtime in 2003-04, but lost by three. Monmouth will host a pair of BIG EAST teams this season in the MAC, as both Rutgers and preseason No. 6 Villanova visit West Long Branch.

IT ONLY TAKES ONE MORE POINT THAN YOULast season, Monmouth fi nished 5-2 in games decided by fi ve points or less. Eight of Monmouth’s fi rst nine games were decided by fi ve points or less, and Monmouth was 4-4 in those games after its 78-74 win over Hartford.
DEFENSIVE AT THE ARCMU allowed 32.8% from three-point range to its opponents last season - which was fourth-best in the league. Conversely, the Hawks hit just 31.1% of their own attempts (11th-best).
MONMOUTH ALL-TIME 1,000-POINT SCORERSWhile the Monmouth D-I basketball record books contain 18 members in its 1,000-point club, the all-time 1,000-point scorers include 13 more members that date back to the 50’s. Led by Ron Kornegay’s 2,526 points, MU now has 31 members in this club. Second to Kornegay, (Athletic Director at Manasquan H.S., and the only retired number at MU - #22) is Ed Halicki (1969-72), who threw a no-hitter for the San Francisco Giants in his Major League Baseball career.
THE COACHING TREE...Monmouth has the sons of two coaches or former coaches on its roster this year. Nick DelTufo’s father was an assistant coach at Montclair State and Caldwell, while R.J. Rutledge’s father was an assistant coach at St. John’s during the 1980’s.
DISHING IT OUTJames Hett registered 105 assists as a rookie, which was the pro-gram’s highest freshman total since 1992-93, when John Giraldo collected 109 as a rookie. The point guard, who set a new career-best with 10 assists vs. Hartford (12/11/10), now has 420 career assists in 101 games (4.16 apg). Hett surpassed No. 3 Rahsaan Johnson (418; 1999-2002) on the all-time list, and now has No. 2 John Giraldo in his sights. The Hawks’ all-time assist leader is Derric Thomas, who had 524 assists from 1984-88.
LAST “HOME” OPENERFor a second straight year, the Hawks opened the season at home,
as Monmouth topped FIU in the MAC last season. Prior to last year,
the last time Monmouth opened a season at home was when the
Hawks hosted Rider University to open the 2001-02 campaign. On
that night, the Hawks received their 2001 NEC Championship &
NCAA Tournament rings and bested the Broncs by fi ve.
TOURING THE GARDEN STATEThis season, the Hawks will face four of the seven Garden State
Division I Basketball programs - Fairleigh Dickinson, Princeton,
Rider and Rutgers. Monmouth, which competed against six NJ
squads last year, went 0-7 on the Garden State Tour.
WAITE-LISTED AS ALL-ROOKIELast season, forward Ed Waite earned Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team honors, increasing the program-total to 15 players
who have earned All-Newcomer/All-Rookie accolades. Waite, who
hauled in a season-best 17 rebounds as part of his fi rst career
double-double against Fairleigh Dickinson in February, averaged
9.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game as a freshman.

SEEING THE SUN RISEIn Monmouth’s 6 a.m. game at Saint Peter’s (11/17/09), the Hawks posted its lowest point total (34) since scoring 33 points against Notre Dame in the 2007 Paradise Jam.
WARE MENDEDSophomore forward Marcus Ware, who missed eight weeks with a stress fracture in his foot sufferred in the fi nal Blue/White scrim-mage, was cleared to practice on 12/7/09, but saw action in just two games [Rutgers (12/9), and Princeton (12/16)], before red-shirting with that foot injury.
DOUBLE-DIGIT SCORERSIn 21 of Monmouth’s 31 games last year, the Hawks had at least three players score in double-fi gures. In the games in which three Hawks did not score in double-digits, MU went 2-8. No Hawks scored in double-fi gures in the opener versus Stony Brook (11/16), but a trio did in wins over Lehigh, Eastern Michigan, North Dakota and Hartford, and in losses to Idaho and Rutgers.
NEC OPENERSMonmouth is now 16-10 all-time in Northeast Conference open-ers, dating back to the Hawks’ fi rst season in the NEC (1985-86), after its season-opening loss at CCSU (11/27). Over that span, the Hawks are 6-5 when they open league play on the road.
ALLOWING 80+Monmouth allowed 80+ points to seven opponents last season. The most 80-point outings by the opposition came during the 1985-86 season, when 11 teams hung 80+ on the Hawks. The 1991-92 edition had no opponents accompish the feat.
IT’S A LONG ROAD AHEAD...Last season, MU endured a seven-game road swing - the pro-gram’s longest since venturing away from home for eight straight games in 1993-94. The Hawks’ longest road trip this season is fi ve games, which will see the Blue and White travel to four dif-ferent states (including a stay in Washington). Monmouth went 2-3 on the trip.
CAUGHT UP IN THE IVYMU’s win over Penn (12/12) last season was the Hawks’ fi rst win in the series that started in 2002-03 (1-4). The win over Penn also gave the Hawks their win over an Ivy League team other than Princeton.
WIN STREAKIn 2009-10, Monmouth put together a fi ve-game win streak, which was the Hawks’ fi rst such streak since 2004-05 when the Blue and White strung together six straight wins in January.
517 STRAIGHTMonmouth, which went 0-for-11 from three-point range at Princ-
eton (12/16), broke a streak of 517 straight games of hitting a
three-pointer. The last game in which the Hawks pitched on 0-fer
from beyond the arc was February 13, 1992 at Long Island, in
which MU went 0-for-5.
517 STRAIGHT - PART IIDoing the research for the previous note led Monmouth Athletics
student-worker Mark Mohrman to discover that the last time the
Hawks went through an entire game without hitting a free throw,
was also the February 13, 1992 contest at LIU. Monmouth, which
lost by 17 that night, went 0-for-5 from the line as well.
HOME WINSThe Hawks’ eight home wins is the most for the program since the
2006-07 season when MU posted eight home wins. The school re-
cord for home victories is 13, set during the 2003-04 campaign.
MINUTE MENMU now has 18 players in its DI history to play over 3,000 career minutes, led by all-time leading scorer John Giraldo (1992-96). Player Minutes 1. John Giraldo (‘92-96) 4,089 2. NEW FACESMonmouth welcomes several new faces to the program this year,
including seven players, and new staff. The Hawks’ newcomers in-
clude Gary Cox, Jordan Davis, Daniel James, Dion Nesmith, Matt
Pritchett, Jesse Steele and Phil Wait, while the sideline welcomes
assistant coach Kevin Murphy and former Monmouth standout
and the 2005 NEC Player of the Year, Blake Hamilton.
10-YEAR ANNIVERSARYThis season marks the 10-year anniversary of Monmouth’s 2001
Northeast Conference Championship, the Hawks’ fi rst under head
coach Dave Calloway. That season, the Hawks fi nished with a
school-record 21 wins and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in
Greensboro, North Carolina, where they faced eventual National
Champion, Duke University.
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARDSLast season, forward Ed Waite hauled in a season-best 17 re-
bounds as part of his fi rst career double-double against FDU
(2/6). Waite’s accomplishment was the highest rebound total
since Corey Albano grabbed 20 boards against LIU in Febru-
ary, 1997. Waite’s 17 rebounds was the seventh-highest total in
MU’s D-I annals, as Karl Towns grabbed 23 against Morgan State
(1985) to head the list.
HONORING THE PAST... RAHSAAN JOHNSON NAMED TO NJHOOPS ALL-DECADE TEAMOne of the most dynamic scorers in Monmouth and Northeast Conference history, guard Rahsaan Johnson - the 2001 NEC Play-er of the Year and Honorable Mention All-America, was named to NJ Hoops’ All-Decade Team.
In three seasons with the Hawks (1999-2002), Johnson scored 1,628 points, which is good for sixth all-time at MU. Johnson is also third on the all-time assist list (418), ranks fourth in steals (169), and 11th in rebounds (456). In addition, Johnson holds the single-game scoring record at Monmouth with his 43 point effort versus St. Francis (N.Y.) [2/4/01] in a 86-77 victory. The Hawks were 51-38 during Johnson’s career and he helped them to a Northeast Conference Championship in 2001.
Joining Johnson is Saint Peter’s guard Keydren Clark, Seton Hall guard Andre Barrett, Rider forward Jason Thompson and Rutgers guard Quincy Douby.
CALLOWAY’S CAREERHead coach Dave Calloway, in his 14th season at the helm of the
Hawks’ program passed former coach and mentor Wayne Szoke
on the Monmouth all-time Division I victory list with his win over
St. Francis [N.Y.] (2/18), giving Calloway 169 career wins. Callo-
way’s win over Hartford put the Hawk at 173 total victories.
Bill Boylan, who guided Monmouth from 1956-1977, earned 364
career wins on the sideline and recorded a .699 win percentage
in his 21 seasons.
MORE AND MORE “W’S”Last season, with its victory at St. Francis (2/18), Monmouth
earned its 12th overall win (its highest win total since 2006-07),
and earned its eighth league win (its highest win total since post-
ing 12 victories in 2005-06).
CHRISTENING THE MACAfter 44 years of calling Boylan Gymnasium the home of Mon-
mouth University Basketball, the Hawks opened the 2009-10 cam-
paign in the brand new, $57-million Multipurpose Activity Center
on November 13 and 15, when MU hosted FIU and Seton Hall. FIU
and SHU both made fi rst-time appearances on campus, while the
Pirates’ visit was the fi rst time MU hosted a BIG EAST team.
TRANSFERSCenter Phil Wait sat out the mandatory year last season after
transfering to Monmouth from St. John’s University. Wait, who
saw action in 11 games with the Red Storm as a freshman, started
MU’s exhibition game against Dominican and added nine points,
three rebounds and three blocks.
Guard Jesse Steele, who was a mid-year transfer from Army, will
be eligible for the Hawks once the fi rst semester ends. Steele,
who appeared in seven games for the Black Knights, earning one
start, is expected to be dressed for the fi rst time in the Blue and
White, when Monmouth visits Harvard on December 29.
TRANSFERS, PART 2Guard Dion Nesmith’s eligibility is still being questioned by the
NCAA. Nesmith, who accepted a scholarship to play football at
Northeastern out of high school, transfered to Monmouth after NE
dropped its football program. If Nesmith came to Monmouth to
play football, he would have been eligible right away.
Joining Nesmith, Steele and Wait, as transfers are forward Gary
Cox and guard Matt Pritchett, who came from junior colleges.
LEAVING BOYLANThrough the 2008-09 season, the Monmouth Basketball programs
posted a combined 415-247 record in Boylan Gym. The Hawks
called Alumni Memorial Gymnasium, later named William T. Boy-
lan Gymnasium in 1992, home for 44 seasons. Alumni Gymnasi-
um opened on November 27, 1965, and opened its doors for reg-
ular season competition on December 1, 1965 when MU defeated
Saint Peter’s 73-71, on Ron Kornegay’s team-high 24 points.
LAST YEAR’S BASKETBALL TRAVELERS TRIPIn 2009-10, Monmouth competed in the World Vision Classic, an-
other Basketball Travelers, Inc. Tournament, and posted a 1-2
mark in the event. After defeating host Wyoming in its opening
game, Monmouth recorded back-to-back, single-digit losses to
Pepperdine and Hampton.
THIS YEAR’S BASKETBALL TRAVELERS TRIPMonmouth went 2-1 in the Basketball Travelers Classic in Idaho
(12/3-5), registering victories over Eastern Michigan (MAC) and
North Dakota (Great West), while dropping a three-point deci-
sion to host Idaho (WAC). Mike Myers Keitt (12.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg,
56.0% FG) and Will Campbell (11.7 ppg, 2.0 apg, 2.0 spg) both
earned All-Tournament Team recognition for the Hawks.
STARTING LINEUPSIn its fi rst 11 games of the season, Monmouth has utilized fi ve
different starting lineups. Two Hawks (Hett and Waite) have been
the only constants so far this year.
EXTRA SESSIONSMonmouth’s double overtime game against Hartford was the
Hawks’ second extra session game of the season, and the fi rst
2OT game since February 20, 2006 - when MU outlasted Fairleigh
Dickinson 96-89, in Boylan Gym.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASUREPhil Wait’s fi rst career double-double against Hartford (11 pts, 16
rebs) was the Hawks’ fi rst double-double since Ed Waite posted a
10-point, 17-rebound effort at Fairleigh Dickinson (2/6/10).
COMING OUT PARTYJunior Gary Cox, who had played in a total of 26 minutes in the
fi rst eight games, played a career-high 30 minutes for the Hawks
against Hartford on Saturday, and delivered. Cox, who went
5-for-7 from three-point range, hit 8-for-10 from the fl oor for a
team-high 23 points, while adding fi ve rebounds, in MU’s come-
back win over UH.
QUITE THE COMEBACK...MU’s 17-point comeback in the victory over Hartford, was the
Hawks’ biggest comeback win since November 24, 2003, when
Monmouth erased a 19-point defi cit against Hampton in the Para-
dise Jam. Monmouth trailed 35-16 with 1:58 remaining in the
half, in a 64-52 victory over the Pirates - which was a PJ record.
Monmouth’s largest DI comeback was in the 2001 NEC Champion-
ship game against St. Francis, when the Hawks came back from
20 points down with 14 minutes remaining.
THREE NLI’sGuard Austin Tillotson (York, Pa./Eastern York), wing Andrew
Nicholas (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York), and forward Mykel Har-
ris (Lexington Park, Md./The Phelps School) have all signed Na-
tional Letters of Intent to play basketball at Monmouth University
in 2011, head coach Dave Calloway announced recently.
Tillotson and Nicholas are currently teammates at Eastern York
High School in Wrightsville, Pa., and were both named to Class
AAA all-state basketball teams as juniors. The duo led Eastern
York to its fi rst District 3 title in 22 years, a single-season record
31 wins and a PIAA Class AAA semifi nal appearance.
Tillotson, a 6-0 guard, averaged 19. 2 points and 5.5 assists this
past season en route to being a fi rst-team all-state selection.
Tillotson was also named the Daily Record/Sunday News’ Division
III/IV Player of the Year as a junior.
The 6-foot-6 Nicholas, a left-handed wing player, scored 20.9
points per game, connected on 62 threes and grabbed 6.2 re-
bounds per game during his junior campaign, en route to his sec-
ond team all-state team selection. Nicholas was also a third team
all-state selection in 2009.
Harris, currently attending The Phelps School in Malvern, Pa.,
played at Great Mills High School in Maryland last season. Harris
averaged 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game,
while leading Great Mills to the 4A regional fi nals. At GMHS, Har-
ris was named to the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference all
conference team, fi rst team all-county and the Washington Post
First-Team All Extra.
Tillotson, Nicholas and Harris will fi ll the voids on the roster left
by graduating seniors James Hett, R.J. Rutledge and Nick DelTufo
in the spring of 2011.
UP NEXT...Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, December 29, when
the Hawks travel to Harvard for a non-conference game at 7:00
p.m.

Monmouth fell in its 2010-11 season opener, 51-49, to defending America East Conference regular season champion Stony Brook on Tuesday morning, as part of ESPN’s Tip-Off Marathon. MU, which got offensive production from all 11 players, had its game-tying attempt fall off the rim as time expired in the season-opening defeat.
SB, an NIT squad last year, outscored the Hawks 5-0 in the fi nal 1:08, and reclaimed the lead 50-49 on a pair of Chris Martin free throws with 23.5 ticks left. Trailing by one, the Hawks moved the ball around for a three-point shot from R.J. Rutledge, but the Seawolves corralled the miss, and Bryan Dougher was able to hit a foul shot for a two-point lead. Following the miss, the Hawks raced down court, but Marcus Ware’s attempt from the top of the key fell off the rim.
Back-to-back layups from James Hett and Waite gave Monmouth its fi rst lead of the game, 4-2, just 2:10 into the contest, and the Hawks pushed their lead to 8-4, following consecutive baskets from Phil Wait and Myers Keitt with 14:58 showing.
The Seawolves then scored fi ve of the game’s next six points to knot the score at 9-9 on Dave Coley’s short runner, and SB claimed its fi rst lead since 2-0 on Martin’s free throw with 7:26 left.
SBU’s lead was short-lived when Campbell dropped in a fast break layup off a feed from Waite, off a Seawolves’ turnover, as the Hawks grabbed a 13-12 advantage with 6:51 on the clock.
The two sides traded leads over the next two minutes before a pair of Gary Cox free thro ws moved Monmouth in front 17-14 with 4:51 remaining until the break. After Coley drilled another short jumper for SBU, Myers Keitt dropped in a post hoop, and Cox raced for a layup following a steal to push the Hawks ahead 21-16 with 3:29 left.
Jordan Davis’ drive down the middle gave MU its largest lead of the half, 23-16, with 2:14 showing, but a pair of lay-ins from Al Rapier, including one with 4.0 ticks left, made the score 24-20 at the half.
After the two teams combined to 0-for-15 from three-point range in the opening stanza, each side drained a trey out of the break, as SBU’s leading scorer Bryan Dougher connected from deep for his fi rst points of the contest, and Myers Keitt answered for a 27-23 MU edge with 18:21 showing. The Hawks pushed their lead to 29-23, just 32 seconds later on Campbell’s offensive putback.
Monmouth increased its run out of the break to 9-3 when Campbell drilled a trifecta off a feed from Hett in transition, to claim its largest lead of the game, 32-23, with 15:35 left.
MU secured a double-digit lead with 13:57 remaining when Davis found Ware for a basket off an inbounds play and a 34-23 edge.
The Seawolves answered by scoring the next nine points, over the next 2:05 of action, to trim the Monmouth lead to 34-32 following back-to-back Rapier layups.
Clinging to a two-point advantage, Monmouth answered with a quick 5-0 spurt to coral a 39-32 lead with 11:05 left on Rutledge’s traditional three-point play. After SBU pulled within 39-34 on Martin’s baseline drive, MU infl ated the lead back to nine, 43-34, on Ware’s follow dunk and a pair of Campbell free throws.
Dougher’s deep three and Dallis Joyner’s short jumper in the lane, combined with a pair of Martin foul shots, allowed the Seawolves to climb within 43-41 with 6:12 left, before Waite stopped the run with a free throw with 5:08 remaining.
SBU upped its run to 10-1 on Anthony Mayo’s three-point play with 4:06 showing to knot the score at 44-44, but Monmouth reclaimed a 46-44 lead on Wait’s short baseline jump shot, 22 ticks later.
After an empty Monmouth possession, Martin drained a jumper in front of the SBU bench to tie the game at 46-46 with 1:44 left.
On the ensuing possession, Hett tossed a skip pass to Rutledge who attempted a three-pointer, but corralled his own miss, and turned it into a three-point play, and a 49-46 edge with 1:15 showing.
Out of a timeout, Dougher dropped in a fl oater to pull the Sea-wolves within 49-48 with 1:08 on the clock, and after a MU turnover, Martin was fouled on the offensive rebound. With SB in the double-bonus, Martin drained the fi rst foul shot before MU called timeout. Out of the break, Martin hit the second for the one-point lead.
