“Celebrating the never ending tradition of Oregon State Athletics by continuing to honor its past, educate its present, and

prepare for its future; while connecting all who have contributed to its legacy.”

In the spirit of camaraderie, Oregon State University’s Varsity OSU Association is dedicated to uphold-ing the long tradition of athletic and academic excellence at Oregon State. Varsity OSU serves its membership by enhancing relation-ships among alumni letter-winners, current student-athletes, and current and former coaches and administrators.

Initiated in 2011, Beavers without Borders is a program that off ers global service-learning experiences for student-athletes at Oregon State University.

The program has successfully completed six service proj-ects including trips to Guatemala, Macedonia, Ethiopia, and most recently the Dominican Re-public.

Throughout those trips, over 75 student-ath-letes were able to experience life in a distinct culture, learn about the impact of their work on a community and interact outside of the univer-sity context to maximize the intercultural expe-rience.

SQUAD is a new way to think about tickets, allowing OSU alumni (1-10 years post-graduation) the fl exibility to attend any event hosted by Oregon State Athletics.

This unique upgradable experi-ence allows SQUAD members to conveniently manage their ac-counts on an IPhone or Android phones, eliminating the need for paper tickets.

SQUAD provides total freedom to attend any ticketed Beaver home game (football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, gymnastics, wrestling and volleyball) for just $19.99 per month or an annual fee of $239. This includes high-demand events such as Civil War games and other popular contests.

To become a SQUAD member or to learn more about the full package, including parking and concession options, please visit OSUSQUAD.com. Up to 300 memberships will be sold during the initial phase of the program.

42016 BEAVER FOOTBALL • GAME 12 • OREGON STATE VS OREGON • NOVEMBER 26, 2016

TACKLING MACHINES: Senior LB Caleb Saulo is third in the conference with 7.9 tackles per game (11 games, 87 tackles) and junior LB Manase Hungalu ranks fourth at 7.4 (10, 74). If the duo continues the rest of the season it would be the fi rst time since 2011 that the Beavers have had two players ranked among the top 10 in the Pac-12 Conference in tackles per game when LB Feti ‘Unga was sixth with 7.4 (9, 67) and S Anthony Watkins was ninth with 7.1 (12, 85). Further, the Beavers have not had a player fi nish the season among the top three in the league in tackles since S Greg Laybourn led the league with 113 tackles in 13 games in 2008. It is also noteworthy that senior S Devin Chappell is tied for 14th in the conference with 6.6 tackles per game (11, 73).

THE KICKING GAME: The Beavers kicking game has taken on a unique form late in the season. Ju-nior kicker Garrett Owens, who is a perfect 73-73 in his career on PATs handles that aspect, but redshirt freshman Jordan Choukair took over fi eld goal du-ties at UCLA. Choukair hit his only try from 20 yards out. True freshman Adley Rutschman is OSU’s kick-off specialist.

TWO OF THE BEST: Starting wide receivers Victor Bolden Jr. and Jordan Villamin have been spending the season climbing Oregon State’s career receiving yards records list. Currently Bolden Jr. moved up to 9th all-time at OSU with 1,849 receiving yards while Villamin is 16th with 1,487 yards. In addition, Bolden Jr. is sixth on OSU’s all-time like with 167 career re-ceptions.

MR. DO-IT-ALL: Victor Bolden Jr. has quietly moved up to third on Oregon State all-time career all-purpose yards list. Bolden Jr. has accounted for 5,152 all-pur-pose yards (rushing, receiving, punt return, kickoff return and interception return) trailing only OSU greats James Rodgers (2007-11) and Ken Simonton (1998-2001).

QUICK SIX: Senior Victor Bolden Jr. has been all over the fi eld for the Beavers through four games - as a wide receiver, running jet sweeps and reverses, and returning punts and kickoff s. In 2016, Bolden Jr. has punished teams for failing to account for him resulting in big plays for the Beavers. Bolden Jr. is the only player in the NCAA with two plays of 90+ yards - 92-yard jet sweep (second-longest rushing play in OSU history) against Idaho State and a 99-yard kickoff return against Boise State. He now has four plays of 75 yards or more this year with a 75-yard touchdown run (at Washington) and a 75-yard touchdown reception (at Stanford).

AIMING FOR THE CYCLE: Senior do-everything player Victor Bolden Jr. is one of 16 players in the nation to have scored touchdowns rushing, receiving and as a kick returner in 2016. Bolden notched a receiving touchdown in the season-opener at Minnesota, had a 92-yard touchdown run against Idaho State in Week 2, and returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown against Boise State in Week 3. Others that have accom-plished the feat are Antonio Callaway (Florida), Jarred Craft (Louisiana Tech), Keion Davis (Marshall), Carlos Henderson (New Mexico), Darrell Henderson (Memphis), Quadree Henderson (Pittsburgh), Adrian Killins (UCF), T.J. Logan (North Carolina), Tim McVey (Air Force), Joe Mixon (Oklahoma State), Charles Nelson (Oregon), Rashaad Penny (San Diego State), Tony Pollard (Memphis), John Ross (Washington), Aregeros Turner (Northern Illinois) and Juwan Washington (San Diego State).

FIRST ONE, NOW TWO: Entering the game against Washington State, Victor Bolden Jr. was the fi rst OSU player with two rushes of 75 or more yards - 92 vs. Boise State & 75 at Washington) in the same season since Steven Jackson in 2002 (75 vs. Fresno State & 80 vs. UCLA). After gashing the Cougars for an 89-yard touchdown jaunt Ryan Nall has joined the fray. Nall ran 80 yards to paydirt against California as well.

BECOMING THE NORM: OSU has accumulated more fi rst downs via the rush than the pass for the second straight season. The Beavers have converted 89 fi rst downs on the ground versus 85 through the air. Prior to 2015 the last time Oregon State had fi nished a season with more fi rst downs on the ground was 2000.

52016 BEAVER FOOTBALL • GAME 12 • OREGON STATE VS OREGON • NOVEMBER 26, 2016

RUSHING THE BALL: Last month, against California, the Beavers rushed for 474 yards - the most in the Gary Andersen era. It was the fourth-most rushing yards in school history and the most-ever against a conference opponent. The old record was 470 yards at Idaho in 1942 when both teams were members of the Pacifi c Coast Conference. The record against a current conference opponent in a league game was 428 at UCLA in 1994. OSU entered the game with 557 rushing yards through four games.

READY OR NOT: The OSU rushing attack through 11 games has been eff ective to the tune of 5.5 yards per carry (389 carries for 1,990 yards). That is a record-setting pace for a full season. The current record is 4.9 ypc (474 for 2,336) set in 1960. The Beavers have spread the rushing gains around as well with four dif-ferent players exceeding 100 yards in a game – Ryan Nall, Victor Bolden Jr., Darell Garretson and Tim Cook.

THE WRECKING NALL: Earlier this season against Cal, sophomore running back Ryan Nall rushed for 221 yards on 14 carries, the 10th-best performance in school history. His former personal-best was 174 yards at Oregon in 2015. With 131 yards against Washington State, Nall has three 100-yard perfor-mances this year and fi ve in his career. Nall averages 6.9 yards per carry in 2016 leading the Pac-12 and ranks 14th in the nation.

MISSING IN ACTION: Every football team suff ers in-juries as the season wears on. For Oregon State 14 players that began the season as expected starters OR became starters due to injury have combined to miss 54 starts. Among the starters to miss at least one game are: WR Seth Collins (1), OL Yanni Demo-gerontas (4), LB Titus Failauga (6), QB Darell Gar-retson (5), OL Sean Harlow (3), LB Manase Hungalu (1), CB Jay Irvine (7), OL Fred Lauina (2), RB Ryan Nall (2), TE Ricky Ortiz (1), LB Joah Robinett (5), TE Noah Togiai (9), LB Bright Ugwoegbu (2) and CB Dwayne Williams (7).

M.A.S.H. UNIT: With the injury bug once again biting the Oregon State football program, the Beavers were only able to suit up 63 players due to injury and ill-ness, seven fewer than allowed for a visiting team per Pac-12 regulations, at Washington three weeks ago. Entering the game with the Huskies, OSU was miss-ing players who had accounted for 74% of the team’s total rushing yards and 91% of the team’s total pass-ing yards.

DONE FOR THE YEAR: The list of Beavers considered out for the season has grown to 15 including: WR Seth Collins, OL Sam Curtius, S Jonas Dahl, QB Darell Garretson, CB Jaydon Grant, CB Jay Irvine, DL Thor Katoa, OL Bobby Keenan, S Jalen Moore, S Landry Payne, LB Shemar Smith, TE Noah Togiai, TE Kenny Turnier, LB Bright Ugwoegbu and DE LaMone Wil-liams. In addition, injuries and illness have prevented several others from playing through the fi rst half of the season including: OL Gunnar Braden, CB Charles Okonkwo and OL Robert Olson.

HEAD COACH GARY ANDERSEN Gary Andersen was named the 28th head coach of the Oregon State football program on December 10, 2014. Named a semi-fi nalist for the Max-well Football Club Coach of the Year two straight seasons prior to being hired to lead the Oregon State football program, Andersen has experienced success everywhere he’s been. He has a 54-56 overall record in seven-plus years as a head coach, which includes rebuilding programs at Utah State and Oregon State. He owns an 8-2 bowl-game record as an assistant or head coach, and was 2-0 in BCS bowls as an assistant. Andersen is the total package. In addition, to winning conference championships and bowl games, his student-athletes are also very successful off the fi eld, earning numerous conference and national all-academic honors. Fifteen student-athletes were named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team last season, matching the school record. Andersen went to Wisconsin from Utah State, where he completely revitalized a program that had won just six games in the three previous seasons. The Aggies were 4-8 in Andersen’s fi rst two years, improved to 7-6 in his third and then won a school-record 11 games and the Western Athletic Conference title in 2012. It was their fi rst outright league championship since 1936. A native of Salt Lake City and a 1986 graduate of the University of Utah with a degree in political science, An-dersen was a junior college All-American center at Ricks College in 1984, and a letterman at Utah in 1985 and 1986. Andersen and his wife, the former Stacey Lambert, have three sons, Keegan and twins Chasen and Hagen. Keegan played tight end at Utah State for his father and is currently the assistant director of operations at OSU. The twins both attend Utah State, where Chasen is a line-backer. THAT’S GONNA HURT: The loss of sophomore line-backer Bright Ugwoegbu to injury for the remainder of the season is another blow to an already injury-depleted defensive unit. Ugwoegbu has been a diff erent player in 2016. He earned a spot on the fi rst string at outside linebacker in 2015 in what turned out to be a part-time role. He tallied 17 tackles including 2.0 tackles-for-loss and a sack. In 2016, Ugwoegbu was one of the Beavers’ biggest playmakers with 54 tackles, including a team-leading 11.0 tackles-for-loss and squad-best 5.5 sacks. In addition, he forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pair of pass breakups. His 11.0 TFLs and 5.5 sacks ex-ceed the team-highs from last year.

EARLY RETIREMENT: Oregon State went through a series of medically-forced retirements since the spring practice period in April. OL Drew Clarkson (3 starts), OL Leo Fuimaono, RB Damien Haskins and OL Mason Johnson opted to retire from football during the spring. Then following the fi rst week of fall camp S Gabe Ovgard (2) signed his retirement paperwork.

STRONG DEBUT: Junior QB Darell Garretson, who sat out 2015 due to NCAA transfer rules, made his Oregon State debut at Minnesota completing 25 of 40 passes for 228 yards, three touchdowns and no in-terceptions. It was the best starting debut performance by an OSU signal-caller since Cody Vaz passed for 332 yards and three scores in a 42-24 victory at BYU in 2012. Garretson joined the likes of some of OSU’s greatest quarterbacks in history with only Matt Moore and Erik Wilhem throwing for more TDs in a debut performance with four and other than Vaz, Derek Anderson is the only other to throw for three scores in the modern era.

FRESH FACES: So far in 2016 Oregon State coaches have called on 21 young players to make their OSU debuts. Nine true freshmen have played so far in 2016 including: QB Conor Blount, WR Trevon Bradford, LB Andrzej Hughes-Murray, OL Gus Lavaka, RB Artavis Pierce, LB Joah Robinett, K Adley Rutschman, LB Shemar Smith and LB Shemiah Unutoa-Whitson. In addition, redshirt freshmen DT Elu Aydon, WR Andre Bodden, Ol Blake Brandel, K Jordan Choukair, CB Xavier Crawford, WR Tyler DeLashmutt, S Omar Hicks-Onu, LB Hamilton Hunt, CB Jay Irvine, S Jalen Moore, CB Shawn Wilson and TE Tuli Wily-Matagi have seen playing time for the fi rst time in their careers.

12 MORE FIRST TIMERS: Nine transfers have also been called upon to contribute including: RB Tim Cook, QB Darell Garretson, WR Timmy Hernan-dez, OL Brayden Kearsley, DE Phillip Napoleon, S Landry Payne, LB Wesley Payne, DT Paisa Savea and CB Kyle White. Juniors OL Sam Curtius and RB Marcus Greaves as well as sophomore OL Yanni De-mogerontas have also taken their fi rst college snaps this season bringing the grand total of 2016 fi rst-timers to 33 players making their collegiate debut for the Beavers.

FIRST TIME STARTERS: Sixteen Oregon State play-ers have registered the fi rst starts of their careers. First-time starters include sophomores OL Yanni De-mogerontas and LB Adam Soesman, redshirt fresh-men DT Elu Aydon, OL Blake Brandel, CB Xavier Crawford, CB Jay Irvine and S Jalen Moore. True freshmen LB Andrzej Hughes-Murray, OL Gus La-vaka, RB Artavis Pierce, LB Joah Robinett and LB Shemiah Unutoa-Whitson have also made starts in 2016. Junior college transfers RB Tim Cook, WR Timmy Hernandez, DE Phillip Napoleon and DT Paisa Savea have also registered starts in recent weeks. In addition, juniors QB Darell Garretson and OL Brayden Kearsley have also made their fi rst OSU starts. Both players had started at their previous schools, Garretson arrived at OSU with 11 starts under his belt at Utah State and Kearsley had four starts at BYU. 72016 BEAVER FOOTBALL • GAME 12 • OREGON STATE VS OREGON • NOVEMBER 26, 2016

TEAM CAPTAINS: The 2016 team is captained by seniors Victor Bolden Jr., Devin Chappell, Sean Harlow, Caleb Saulo, Dustin Stanton and junior Darell Gar-retson.

NEW COORDINATORS: The Oregon State football program is one of fi ve in the nation (Bowling Green, Hawai’i, UCF and Utah State) that has had a diff erent off en-sive AND defensive coordinator in each of the last three seasons. On the off ensive side, the Beavers have been led by John Garrett (2014), Dave Baldwin (2015) and Kevin McGiven and T.J. Woods will co-coordinate in 2016, while on the defensive side it has been Mark Banker (2014), Kalani Sitake (2015) and now Kevin Clune (2016). Bowling Green is the only team to have had four diff erent coordinators on both sides of the ball in the last four years. In point of fact, Danny Langsdorf was the off ensive coordinator for the previous 10 seasons before Garrett’s stint under then-head coach Mike Riley.

SCHEDULE QUIRK: The Beavers have two separate two-game stretches at Reser Stadium - one is complete (Cal and Utah) and the second closes out the season for the Beavers (Arizona and Oregon). The last time OSU played a pair of league two-game home stands in one season was 1991.

NEW HOME FOR THE BEAVS: The Valley Football Center remains a construction zone but various areas of the Victory Through Valley project have come online in recent weeks with the equipment room and loading dock area becoming fully functional, a barber shop facility in the players’ lounge and a new coaches locker room opening. Just this week a new media interview and work room was completed and will be used today for the Beavers’ postgame press conference for the fi rst time. The Beavers moved into their new locker room in August. Other completed parts of the renovation include an expanded athletic medicine facility, expanded equipment operations, renovated offi ces for the coaching staff , and an academic/career development offi ce. Still under construction are a football hall of fame, lobby and auditorium. For more on the $42 million project go to www.ourbeavernation.com.

CAMP BEND: The Oregon State football program opened fall camp by trekking across the Cascade Mountain range 155 miles to Bend, Ore. for the fi rst week of practice. The team worked out at Summit High School while living in the dorms of Central Oregon Community College. The squad was able to work on team-bonding as well as receiving the benefi ts of working out at an elevation of 3,623 feet.

SHUFFLING THE DECK: When senior off ensive lineman Sean Harlow returned to the lineup at Colorado it prompted a ripple eff ect along the line. Blake Brandel moved from left tackle to right tackle, Dustin Stanton slid from right tackle to right guard and Gavin Andrews further moved inside from right guard to center. Brandel, Stanton and Andrews had never previously played their new positions in a game for the Beavers. Fred Lauina was the lone regular to remain in his usual position at left guard. Lauina ended up getting injured in the game sending true freshman Gus Lavaka into action at left guard fi nishing the complete revamp of the Beavers’ off ensive line.

WIN THE TURNOVER BATTLE, WIN THE GAME: Over the last 159 games, Oregon State is 52-17 when com-mitting fewer turnovers than its opponent, 12-44 when committing more and 17-18 when even.

60TH ANNIVERSARY: The 2016 season is also the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Rose Bowl season. The game was commemorated during the weekend of Sept. 23-25 when the Beavers hosted Boise State. The game was the Beavers’ second Rose Bowl berth, but fi rst actually at the Rose Bowl. A crowd of 100,000 witnessed 10th-ranked Oregon State fall to No. 3 Iowa 35-19. Joe Francis rushed for 73 yards and passed for another 130 yards in the loss.

75TH ANNIVERSARY: The 2016 season marks the 75th anniversary of the 1941 Rose Bowl season. The an-niversary was recognized Oct. 29 when the Beavers hosted Washington State for “The Men of Roses” game ... The game produced two important fi rsts. It was Oregon State College’s fi rst-ever trip to the famous New Year’s Day classic, and it remains the only Rose Bowl played outside Pasadena. The reason the game was moved to Durham, N.C. due to the blackout of the West Coast that had followed the attack on Pearl Harbor. The host stadium was Duke University’s home fi eld in Durham, N.C., with the undefeated Blue Devils picked as 3-1 favorites. Oregon State’s victory came as a big surprise to Eastern and Southern sportswriters, with Sid Feder of the Associated Press writing, “Probably never in the quarter century history of the Tournament of Roses had such a completely overlooked betting underdog jumped up to beat the big fellows. Oregon State came East to the wonderment of most of Dixie as to why the Westerners were going to show up at all.” ... Oregon State won the game 20-16 and Jack Gunether of UPI wrote, “The Beavers skipped and slammed and fl icked passes with an ease and fi nesse which completely baffl ed the record crowd.” ... Beaver boss, Lon Stiner, at 38 and the youngest head coach in Rose Bowl history, led the Beavers and Dan Durdan passed and ran OSC to victory earning Player of the Game honors. The winning score came in the third quarter when Gene Gray scored on a 68-yard pass from Bob Dethman.

BEYOND FOOTBALLSetting our student-athletes up for success in life beyond the game

BEYOND FOOTBALL is a component of the Oregon State Football

experience that aims to provide opportunities and a platform for

the personal and professional development of our student-ath-

letes. Focused around three central tenets—EMPOWER, ENGAGE and PREPARE — the program prepares the student-athletes by

providing a diverse array of programming, seminars, classes and

opportunities that align with the program’s central mission: Setting our student-athletes up for success in life beyond the game. The effectiveness of the program is based on its ability to

increase metrics such as increase in team GPA, number of un-dergraduates employed after graduation and increase in number of hours volunteered. To ensure student-athletes are achieving

these aims, the program employs a points metric to track stu-

dent-athletes’ off-field involvement. Student-athletes also meet regularly with a member of the Beyond Football staff to assess progress.

KAYLA GROSSDirector of Beyond Football

THREE CENTRAL TENETSEMPOWER

Connecting the student-athletes to business professionals, thought leaders and community members and experiences that will expand his world view, way of thinking and network.

ENGAGEFostering an understanding of community and global needs and a culture of volunteerism and lifelong civic engagement.

PREPAREIdentifying the student-athlete’s unique interests, skills and passions and determining a professional direction and course for success.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTSStarted in 2013 thanks to a generous gift from an Oregon State alumnus, the program has reached new heights under Head Coach Gary Andersen and Vice President/Director of Athletics Todd Stansbury. In alignment with Stansbury’s emphasis on developing “Everyday Champions,” – student-athletes that achieve success in the classroom and community are prepared to make an impact after graduation — Andersen added additional staff and reconfi gured the program to better serve the student-athletes.

The Beavers make several visits to local schools in the

area for events like Read Across America, and other

literacy programs.
