FROM YOUR PASTOR…..
It was a joy to celebrate our first Easter with you at Smithwood!
Thank you to the choir and Pastor Mike who led us in congregational
singing. Thank you also to those who decorated our sanctuary and
grounds. It was wonderful to take a look at the empty tomb and re-
joice together in our risen king.
This week, we will resume our study in 1 John. John repeats three
tests of authentic Christianity throughout this letter: The “belief test”,
authentic Christians will believe the right things about Jesus Christ;
the “obedience test”, authentic Christians will obey the commands of
Jesus; and the “love test”, authentic Christians will love one another.
Sunday we will look at this third test again in 1 John 3:11-18. As a
people who have been saved by the work of Jesus and have experi-
enced His great love, we are called to love one another. On the night
before He died, Jesus said to His disciples, “A new commandment I
give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you
also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are
my disciples, if you have love for one another” (1 John 13:34-35). I
pray that the great love of God that we saw in Holy Week will drive us
to joyfully serve and love one another. I also pray that those in our
community who do not know Christ will see this love and be drawn to
Him.
Grace and Peace, Jeff
Our Goal: $5,000 Collected to Date: $2,943
An estimated 269 million people in the United States and Canada don’t know Jesus Christ. Maybe you see that number and lose hope. What good can one person do? What difference can you make in the face of such darkness? To keep from despair, it’s important to follow these steps. 1. Pray for harvest. God alone saves souls. Keep asking the Lord to send workers and bring the harvest. 2. Place significance on people. Every single person—every one in that 269 million—is important to God. Reaching just one person shapes the kingdom. 3. Partner well. You are not alone. As a Southern Baptist, you partner with millions of other people in the mission of reaching North America and the world. The North American Mission Board (NAMB) has created an effective strategy for getting the gospel to people who haven’t decided to follow Jesus. That strategy is called Send Network, and through it NAMB helps plant churches in 32 major metropolitan areas (with more to come). These areas—dubbed Send Cities—are cities with huge population, di-versity and great spiritual need. Cities that, when reached for Jesus Christ, could change cultural tides. NAMB leaders explain, “If you reach the cities, you’ll reach the nations,” especially since 83% of the United States and Canada now lives in met-ropolitan areas.
Fountain City Ministry Update:
1. In February, 260 bags of food were given out to 386 recipients.
2. Someone graciously donated a car to the Center and it was given to a man in our community that was attempting to get back on his feet! Wonderful praise! If you ever have the opportunity to bless someone this way, please let FCMC board folks know!
3. Volunteers are needed to take voice mail calls for the Center. Please see Lori Major if interested.
4. Need- Grant writers to obtain funding for the FCMC.
5. Spring and Summer Clothing room opening soon. Please be on the look- out for donation requests.
If you are a member of Smithwood and plan to attend Carson Newman University as a full time undergraduate student for the 2018 fall semester, you may qualify for a scholarship. The deadline to apply is May 1st. Con-tact the office for more information.
Tuesday, April 10th at 10:00 a.m.
Women on Mission will be meeting this Tuesday in the Mission Room. Kelly Gregory, who is the Director of the Fountain City Ministry Center will be giving us an update on the hours and services provid-ed to clients. She will also share some ways we can be involved. All ladies of the church are invited to attend.
There will be a Church Council meeting this Sunday, April 8th, immediately following morning worship. The Council includes the Pastor, ministerial staff, WMU Director, Sunday School Director, and the chairs of the Deacons, Trustees, Outreach Committee, Youth Ministry, Fi-nance, Recreation, Food and Fellowship, and the Moderator.
