ILLUSORY LINES AMERICAN COMPOSERS

CONCERT

Time 20:15 26th Oct 2017

Place: Recital Hall, CCOM

1. O Brother! solo laptop performance (10’00’’/ 2014/ China Premiere)

Composer: Neil Rolnick (USA)

During my freshman and sophomore years in college, I spent most of my evenings playing

various kinds of folk music at a communal house in Cambridge, MA called Old Joe Clark’s. On

trips back to my parents’ home, I taught my younger brothers and my sister the music I was

learning. In the nearly 50 years since, I’ve moved on to other kinds of musical pursuits, but my

brother Peter has continued making this kind of American roots music a major part of his life.

And he’s gotten really good at it. When we get together, we usually play some of those old

songs together, but always in very traditional ways. I often feel that I need to follow his lead,

since the kind of performance I usually do is pretty much outside his experience as a

musician. But I’ve often wondered what it would be like if I took the lead in rearranging some

of these tunes. O Brother! is one answer. The voice is Peter’s, the mashup is mine.

2. Psionic – oboe, live processing, eeg headband & video (8’09’’/ 2016/ China Premiere)

Composer : Christopher Jette (USA) Oboe : Xie Hao (China )Jette

Psionic is an exploration of timbral space with sound material drawn from recordings of

Florida swamps. These recordings are translated into notation and serve as the building

blocks for the oboe part. In addition to oboe, the performer is fitted with an EEG headband,

which is used to control aspects in the electronic accompaniment. The performer exhibits both

direct and indirect control over the electronics. The work brings together sounds controlled by

brain activity, sounds evoking memories stored in the brain and the sonic synthesis of the

neural activity in an attempt to blend mental facets into a sonic utterance. The video

component was created by Angus Forbes and processes prints of sound on paper. generated

by the composer (Jette) and Terry Conrad. Speakers are used to agitate a printing vessel andJette

the floating ink is used to produce prints. Forbes processes these images to provide an

additional layer of counterpoint to the sonic material.

3. Illusory Lines – electronics for 8channel (10’48’’/ 2015/ China Premiere)

Composer : Jon Nelson (USA)

Illusory Lines (2015, dur. 10:48”) is an immersive 8channel composition that utilizes several

significant aural illusions to provide the work’s structural underpinnings. Specifically, the work

incorporates both Shepard Tones (endless glissandi) and Risset Rhythms (endless

accelerando/ritardando) that are featured prominently in several large sections of the work.

The surface of the composition includes physically modeled strings and meshes/plates as well

as samples from an accordion, a double bass and bees, exploring the interrelationships

between these seemingly divergent synthetic and concrete sound worlds. Spatialization

strategies highlight a variety of structural moments while creating a rich sense of location

within space.

4. ZEITNOT IIImprovisation with trumpet and Max/msp (10’00’’/ 2017/ World Premiere)

Composer/Trumpet: Jeff Kaiser (USA)

ZEITNOT II is the third improvisatory work for in a series inspired by my love of chess. The

music in this work incorporates my latest software developments for live performance, with

the goal of creating a hybrid sonic environment of human, trumpet, software, and space.

The majority of sounds you will hear are created live with the trumpet and then processed by

software I author in the Max. (The same environment I use to author the video processing

software.) ZEITNOT II also makes extensive use of a sample library I have created by

recording the inside of the trumpet while it is not being played in the traditional fashion: the

isolated sounds of air escaping from slides, the mechanical sound of valves descending and

ascending, the internal sounds of tubing and bells being struck and plucked from the outside.

The sample library is performed by interactive and generative software, in particular, my

KaiGen (KaiserGenerative) software: KaiGenM, C, R, and SmaplePalyer. These software

plugins generate melodies, harmonies, rhythms, sonic textures, and other data that can be

freely mapped to musical and other performance parameters. ZEITNOT II also incorporates

the newly released KaiGenI, a softwarebased performer that improvises with the live player

and other software players.
