General Information

The output voltage of a battery charger withparallel connected battery varies substantiallywith the charging condition of the battery, andfor many applications the load circuit requiresa better stabilized voltage. Frequently usedmethods for reducing the voltage variation arevoltage dropping diodes and systems withmain and end cells, described on page 83. Amore economical solution is a "step-up"converter. It is a DC/DC converter suppliedfrom the battery with the output connected inseries with the battery. It adds during batterydischarge the voltage that is needed tomaintain the required output voltage level andcan also compensate the voltage dropbetween battery and load. Fig. 1 shows thebasic circuit and Fig.2 the voltage diagram.During normal operation the output voltage ofthe system is slightly reduced as the loadcurrent flows through the converter. During

battery discharge the converter adds voltageand keeps the output voltage of the systemconstant. These converters are very similar tothose of series "C" except that the input andoutput voltage ranges are coordinated with thestandard battery voltage ranges and that theconverter senses the voltage across the loadwhich is the total of the battery voltage andthe voltage added by the converter. Externaldiode "D" shown in Fig. 1 and 3 should beprovided for carrying the load current in caseof a failure of the step-up module or duringreplacement of the module. It also protects thesecondary side of the module.

Features:• During normal operation no voltage needs to be added and the converter runs with a minimum of

power losses.• The maximum voltage to be added is normally less than 20 % of the total voltage. Therefore, the

step-up converter must be designed for 20 % of the through-power, only.

The voltage may be added at the positive sideand the negative line is common for input andoutput as shown in Fig.1 or it may be added atthe negative side with the positive line beingcommon as shown in Fig. 3. Designation willbe E...p in the first or E...n in the second case.

Bypass diode “D” shown in figure 1 and 3 is tobe installed externally.

For more power or redundancy modules maybe connected in parallel with active currentsharing, individually protected by fuses at theinput and decoupling diodes or fuses at theoutput (Fig. 4). We have built such systems upto 2,000 A.

For applications that require individuallystabilized voltages across the loads, theconverters will be connected as shown in Fig.5. Such converters may be modules of differentpower ratings and may be arranged in a racksystem as shown above.
