My musical education started at a very young age. My parents are musicians and my father was my first and most important piano teacher. Looking back, learning the rudiments of piano technique was the least important factor in my development as a pianist. What my father taught me (whether by accident or design) was diversity, and an appreciation for music based on quality not on genre. Because of this I have been lucky enough to play with some of the best musicians in the world in almost every style imaginable. I feel this approach should be the cornerstone of any musical education, yet it is sadly lacking in most of our universities and music colleges.

‘Scenes from a life’ is a collection of eight pieces which can be categorised as songs without words. The pieces are inspired by the heightened emotional states we all experience within our lives. ‘Song for you’, ‘And the world stood still’ and ‘A love sublime’ are dedications to my wife, children, parents and brother, all of whom have made the journey so far a truly blessed one.

‘On dark matter’ and ‘Prayer for a lost soul’ are reflections on loss and grief experienced after the death of my best friend. ‘Buy the ticket, take the ride’, ‘And I danced among the clouds’ and ‘Mingus trip’ are pictures of chemically-induced scenes from my life. ‘Mingus trip’ portrays a Fear and Loathing-style episode at one of those seemingly endless jam sessions with a helpless rhythm section and hundreds of tenor saxophonists waiting for their turn to shine.

The harmonic and melodic language on the album is simple and unhurried in its stylistic approach. I wanted to create time for improvisations to grow out of the simple melodic lines, and to make use of subtle electronics to create a specific atmosphere and, hopefully, a unique sound-world. The music is not in any way virtuosic in character; anybody with above-average technique can display an often infuriating barrage of meandering jazz lines that go in one ear and out of the other. I wanted to create something that will stay with the listener; something that the listener can relate to on an intellectual level, as well as on a purely musical level.

George King is one of the most versatile

pianist-composers working today. He has won

numerous international awards for his classical

compositions including the Gunther Bialas prize

in 2012 (Germany), the Barto Prize in 2010 (USA)

and the Ibla Grand Prize in 2009 (Italy). He was

also selected to study with jazz legends George

Cables, Curtis Fuller and Dr Billy Taylor as part of

the Betty Carter scholarship programme in the

USA.

His concert repertoire stretches from the pre-

Baroque era to the modern classics of the 21st

century, and his performances have taken him to

prestigious venues including the Carnegie Hall,

the Wigmore Hall, the Grand Hall of the Moscow

Conservatory, and the Purcell Room. He works

with many of the UK‘s orchestras, including the

Hallé and RLPO.

As a performer George has broadcast live

on television and radio, and has performed

internationally at festivals including Glastonbury,

Celtic Connections (UK), the Abu Dhabi Jazz

Festival and WOMAD.

George is in high demand as a jazz pianist, and

regularly plays with the Andy Prior and Syd

Lawrence big bands. One of George’s solo piano

free improvisation concerts was released on ASC

records in 2011, entitled Into the Light. George

has also appeared on jazz-inspired albums with

Jon Thorne (Watching the Well on Naim Records)

and Jah Wobble (“7” on 30 Hertz Records).

Recent projects included a joint commission from

the Manchester Jazz Festival and Manchester

Camerata (‘Songs of the Caged Bird’) and an

album of 21st-century piano works for Odradek

Records (Jubilees) which has been praised in the

national and international press.

Carl Raven has a varied career in both the jazz

and classical worlds. He has performed with

BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony

Orchestra, Hallé, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic,

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Manchester

Camerata, Opera North, Northern Sinfonia, the

Michael Nyman Band; and he is a member of

the acclaimed Apollo Saxophone Quartet. His

interest in jazz and improvised music began

when he started his studies at the Royal

Northern College of Music in Manchester in

1994. Since graduating, Carl has remained part

of the Manchester jazz circuit, where he met

long-time collaborator, pianist George King.

Performing regularly at a number of UK

festivals, including Brighton, Vale of Glamorgan,

Bangor, Cheltenham, Warwick & Leamington,

Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festivals

and the London Jazz Festival, he has also

appeared alongside Wayne Shorter as part

of the European Capital of Culture Festival in

Liverpool.

Carl is currently a saxophone and improvisation

tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music

and at Manchester University, and is a Vandoren

performing artist.

Mon éducation musicale a commencé dès mon plus jeune âge. Mes parents sont musiciens et mon père fut mon premier professeur de piano, et le plus important. Avec le recul, l’apprentissage des rudiments techniques du piano n’a pas été le facteur déterminant de mon développement en tant que pianiste. Ce que mon père m’a appris (par accident ou à dessein), c’est la diversité, et une appréciation de la musique basée sur la qualité et non le genre. Pour cette raison, j’ai eu la chance de jouer avec certains des meilleurs musiciens au monde, dans presque tous les styles imaginables. ‘On dark matter’ et ‘Prayer for a lost soul’ sont des réflexions sur la perte et le deuil ressentis après la mort de mon meilleur ami. ‘Buy the ticket, take the ride’, ‘And I danced among the clouds’ et ‘Mingus trip’ sont des tableaux inspirés par des expériences narcotiques antérieures. ‘Mingus trip’ décrit un épisode de type Fear and Loathing durant l’une de ces jams qui n’en finissent pas, avec une section rythmique impuissante et des centaines de saxophonistes ténors attendant leur moment de gloire.

Le langage harmonique et mélodique de l’album est simple et tranquille dans son approche stylistique. Je voulais laisser le temps aux improvisations de se développer sur des lignes mélodiques simples, et faire usage d’éléments électroniques subtils pour créer une atmosphère spécifique et, espérons-le, un paysage sonore unique. La musique n’est en aucune manière centrée sur la virtuosité ; quiconque doté d’une technique supérieure à la moyenne peut présenter un défilé parfois exaspérant de lignes de jazz sinueuses entrant par une oreille et sortant par l’autre. Je voulais créer quelque chose de plus durable ; quelque chose auquel l’auditeur peut s’identifier sur le plan intellectuel, ainsi que sur un plan purement musical. Je tiens à remercier Carl Raven pour s’être investi corps et âme et avoir joué ma musique avec une telle sensibilité.

Carl Raven a une carrière éclectique aussi bien

Meine musikalische Ausbildung startete ich in sehr jungen Jahren. Meine Eltern waren beide Musiker und mein Vater daher mein erster, und wichtigster Klavierlehrer. Rückblickend erachte ich die Ansätze der Klaviertechnik als den am wenigsten bedeutsamen Faktor meiner Entwicklung zum Pianisten. Das was mein Vater mir beibrachte, ob nun durch Zufall, oder Absicht, war Vielfalt und die Haltung Musik nach ihrer Qualität, und nicht nach dem Genre, zu beurteilen. Aus diesem Grund war ich in der glücklichen Lage mit einigen der besten Musiker der Welt in beinahe jedem nur vorstellbaren Stil zu musizieren. Ich denke, dass genau dieser Ansatz der Grundstein jeder musikalischen Ausbildung sein sollte, obwohl leider in den meisten unserer Universitäten und Musikhochschulen genau dies fehlt.

“Szenen aus dem Leben” ist eine Sammlung von acht Stücken, die man als Lieder ohne Worte einordnen kann. Die Stücke sind inspiriert von gehobenen emotionalen Zuständen, die jedermann erlebt. “Song for you”, “And the world stood still” und “A love sublime” sind George Kings Frau, Kindern, Eltern und Bruder gewidmet, die alle die bisherige Wanderschaft äußerst segensreich gemacht haben.

„On dark matter“ und „Prayer for a lost soul“ sind Reflektionen über Verlust und Gram erlitten nach dem Tod von Georges bestem Freund. „Buy the ticket, take the ride“, „And I danced among the clouds“ und „Mingus trip“ sind Bilder ‚chemisch hervorgerufener‘ Szenen aus meinem Leben. „Mingus trip“ porträtiert eine Episode im Fear and loathing-Stil bei einer scheinbar endlosen Jam Session, inclusive einer ratlosen Rhythmusgruppe und hunderten Tenor-Saxophonisten, die nur darauf warten, dass ihr Einsatz heraufdämmert.

Die harmonische und melodische Redeweise auf diesem Album ist in seinem stilistischem Ansatz klar und beschaulich. Ich möchte Zeit für Improvisationen schaffen, die aus einfachen, melodischen Linien erwachsen, und subtile Elektronik verwenden um eine spezifische Atmosphäre und eine hoffentlich einzigartige Klangwelt zu schaffen.

Die Musik ist nicht virtuos in ihrem Charakter; jeder mit einer überdurchschnittlichen Technik kann den oftmals ärgerlichen Schwall an gewundenen Jazzlinien, die zu einem Ohr hinein und zum anderen wieder hinausgehen, wiedergeben. Stattdessen wollte ich etwas schaffen, das beim Hörer verbleibt. Etwas, das der Hörer auf einer intellektuellen, wie auch einer rein musikalischen Ebene nachvollziehen kann.

Ich bedanke mich bei Carl Raven für seine Bereitschaft sich ins kalte Wasser werfen zu lassen und meine Musik derartig einfühlsam zu spielen.

Pianisten und Komponisten unserer Zeit. Er

hat zahlreiche internationale Auszeichnungen

für seine klassischen Kompositionen erhalten.

Unter anderem den Gunther Bialas Preis 2012

(Deutschland), den Barto Preis 2010 (USA) und den

Großen Ibla-Preis im Jahre 2009 (Italien). Außerdem

gehörte er zu den Auserwählten des Betty Carter

Stipendiums, die von den Jazzlegenden George
