A ugust is the eve of new beginnings. Summer is wrapping up and the kids are heading back to school while “the real world” trades yachts in St. Tropez for business lunches at Sant Ambroeus. During July’s endless heat waves, we were very

lucky at SCENE to have a team of interns that not only lled us in on what’s cool, but worked to make this issue the blockbuster that it is. I want to thank four star interns— John David Rigsby, Alice Severs, Anna Shimshak and Samantha Weintraub—for their hard work and amazing attitudes that proved invaluable to making the August SCENE so stellar. I myself started as an intern at Paper and from there have been lucky to have worked with some of the most prominent people in publishing, from writing for Vanity Fair in my early twenties to the dream job at SCENE. ank you Samantha, John David, Anna and Alice—you are part of the SCENE family forever.

To prepare for the frenetic, fabulous fall season, SCENE rang up our favorite boldface New Yorkers to nd out what they are looking forward to most this season, from new restaurants and nightclubs to the stores that will eat up our bank balances. Manhattan comes alive in September. Social calendars are fully loaded and there are so many hot spots to hit that our pages are on re with what’s new and next.

Speaking of the next big thing, we pro le two rising stars: Ansel Elgort (pho-tographer Arthur’s ridiculously photogenic son) and Johannes Huebl, the dash-ing male model who won the heart of the city’s #1 “it” girl, Olivia Palermo. Ansel and Johannes are two names that you’ll be reading and seeing a lot more of, from Ansel’s cinematic role in the remake of Stephen King’s classic gore-fest Carrie to the fashion glossies where Johannes commands center stage. In more movie news, Delphine Barguirdjian hits the red carpet with Andrew Sa r, the founder of the Cinema Society and arguably the most popular man in town. Sa r’s celeb-studded screenings are the most coveted invitations in New York (who doesn’t want to rub elbows with Madonna and Woody Allen?). We nd out how Sa r went from being a fashion executive to one of the most in uen-tial and sought-after hosts (and guests) in just a few years.

Personally, the highlight of my summer was going on safari with artist Ryan McGinness, philanthropist Krista Krieger of e Africa Foundation and the enormously creative and charming DeWoody clan. Not only did I encounter lions, leopards and a fast-talking, crazy dancing Zulu soothsayer, I also got to visit a school and a community garden that e Africa Foundation’s generosity helped fund. Plus, Beth Rudin DeWoody’s ancé, the famous photographer Firooz Zahedi, shot the portrait of me on this page. And on my last day in South Africa, I embarked on a shopping safari in Johannesburg where I scored more Day-Glo fabric and beaded everything to last a few lifetimes. Need a beaded bangle for a fall bene t? Just give me a call. Everyone should buy a ticket to e Africa Foundation’s charity event on October 9. e dress code? Safari chic. So study our well-curated guide to the best of the season and you’ll know where to shop to look your absolute best.

See you on the dance oor.

Elgor t is a New York-based fashion photographer. She is also the photogra-pher and co-editor of the Financial Times daily photo blog , Suits and the Cit y, capturing the looks of New York Cit y's best dressed professionals. Addi-tionally, she is a cor-respondent for MTV Voices and the co-founder of fashion lifest yle company, ALIOMI. Elgor t ’s work has been published in gloss-ies such as Vogue UK , Teen Vogue, US Weekly, Tatler and Elle. Hot Spot: Miss Lily ’s, it doesn’t disappoint whether

for dinner, drinks, lunch or even a fresh juice from their juice bar, Melvin’s Juice Box. The atmosphere is unbeatable, as is the music. And the waitresses and bar tenders are all stunning. Have to Have: My Panasonic Lumix camera that takes great shots, but is easy to carr y ever y where; and headphones, I am always on the run from shoot to meeting to shooting professional street st yle so I like to have my tunes accessible all the time. Behind the Scene: I find it fascinating to look inside many of today ’s tech star tup of fices. Although not ar tist studios, each one I ’ve visited so far has so much creativit y going on inside and many of these companies are really changing the world and how we do things. Get Out Of Town: Kitzbühel, Austria during the Hahnenkamm men’s World Cup Down-hill ski race. During these few days, the town is filled with tens of thousands of fans, lining the ski hill and the streets, ringing cow bells and cheering on the world’s best ski racers. I was a ski racer through college, so this race is a legend and although I’ve skied at Kitzbühel before, I ’ve never been there during this race.

Have to Have: My Monoprice drawing pad. Behind the Scene: Al Hirschfeld’s studio back in the day. Time Traveler: CBGB, moshing in the middle of a Ramones show. Get Out Of Town: My dream is to visit the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

BREASTSSCARLESS BREAST AUGMENTATION:

Using the endoscopic cameras and TV monitors, the incision for the implant

may be placed through the armpit. Also, during my mommy makeovers, I sneak

the implant through the tummy tuck so there are no incisions on the breast.

ARMS“BODYTITE SYSTEM”

Joining last year’s SmartLipo Laser Liposuction, new this

year is the “Bodytite System” the bodytite liposuction suc-

tions the fat below the skin like standard liposuction, but

it now has a second paired wand that travels over the skin at

the same time to deliver radio frequency which tightens up

the skin for a firmer, flatter result.

FACE“ULTHERA" IN COMBINATION

WITH A MINI FACE LIFT: Ulthera technology uses ul-trasound energy, but unlike

a laser, it delivers energy past the skin to tighten the

supporting tissues of the face. now we use this around the brow and the back of the

neck to do a mini facelift with shorter incisions, many times

not having to go behind the ear.

TUMMYENDOSCOPIC TUMMY TUCK:

This is an excellent technique in select patients to use small surgical cameras underneath

the skin to perform the sur-gery. That allows the tummy

muscle to be tightened through a C-section scar or through a

few scars as small as liposuc-tion incisions.

THIGHS“CELLUTITE” PROCEDURE:

uses liposuction which gob-bles the fat, but it also uses

radio frequency to thicken the skin, and a special lipo-

suction wand that releases the skin tethering that

causes the puckering that everyone hates. cellutite is a

new liposuction that treats all three problems all at the

same time.

Ready, steady, party. e evening begins: I y over to the Central Park Zoo, reminiscing about my Manhattan child-hood feeding those fa-mously feisty penguins.

e coasts of Patagonia are a part of the theme of the Wildlife Conservation So-ciety’s bene t, highlighting the pristine beauty of the precious natural wealth along the coasts of Chile and Argentina. is year’s honorees, raising awareness to protect the ecosystems, are Wildlife Conservation Society President and CEO Dr. Steven E. Sanderson and Dr. Juan Carlos Castilla, who receives the Wildlife Conservation Award for his lifetime achievements in marine con-servation, speci cally in the Patagonia region. I taste some of the rarest wines in Chile while watching the most fash-ionable ocks of philanthropists danc-ing the night away in the starry outdoor backdrop of the Central Park Zoo: a very only-in-New-York moment. I score a prime seat at event designer and oral

architect Preston Bailey’s table. “I love designing for the Wildlife Conservation Society Gala,” Bailey tells me. “ is year’s theme of Patagonia was a perfect t with the natural surround-ings of the Central Park Zoo and we are lucky to have a gorgeous, clear early evening sky.” Bailey does a great job as guests fantasize about how they can hijack the ower arrangements and take them home.

Tinsley Mortimer and now-former beau (which is up for speculation in the tabloids—was the relationship real or fake?), Prince Lorenzo Borghese.

Next up: the KAIA PETERKA private sale and cocktails. eir line of playful bags is de nitely going to make its mark with "it" girls this sea-son. e event to preview their col-lection is ttingly held in the “Play-

I remember buying some of my favorite shades from Robert years ago and his sunnies are still stunning. ere is also a celebration for Akris, which has been around for an entire century. Bergdorf Goodman hosts and there is a special book signing. e label is known for its chic, European look; perfect for that very rich lady who likes to lunch and then hop on a plane to travel to a far o destination. e line from Akris ref-erences artists and architects like Yves Klein and Egon Schiele. e man be-hind it all, Albert Kriemler has stacked up a diverse, loyal and very famous clientele like Condoleezza Rice, An-gelina Jolie, and the Princess of Mo-naco, to name just a few. e company was founded by in 1922 by Kriemler’s grandmother, who made polka-dot aprons on her home sewing machine, and in 1944, was taken over by Kriem-ler’s father, who introduced ready-to-wear and designed for Givenchy. On the subject of polka-dots, everyone in fashion is going cuckoo over Louis Vuitton’s collection with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who has been dotting

Marc Jacobs is always on the money and it looks like this season, the polka dot is the new Day-Glo.In the Hamptons, I get the chance to preview artist Bosco Sodi’s collect-ible bottle for 1800 Tequila (drink the booze, save the bottle). Grey Area (the coolest site/gallery for collectors of art and design) and e Pace Gallery transform the Andrew Geller Beach Cottage, a modern masterpiece and a bachelor’s dream house into an exhibit and a dance party. ere is a painted dance oor made from reclaimed wood created by Los Angeles artist Parvez Taj, glowing Rubik’s Cubes tables and art and cute kids everywhere you turn. “Bosco Sodi’s work ts in so nicely with Grey Area’s mission to explore the area where art meets design,” says the gal-lery’s handsome partner Manish Vora. In the crowd I also see Grey Area’s cura-tor Kyle de Woody, art dealer Charles Riva, Shelley Fremont and daughter Casey Fremont Crowe, whose dad, art world biggie Vincent Fremont was at home babysitting his rst baby grand-son Rex. “My dad said he changed his rst diaper since I was a baby,” Casey beams proudly. Also there: Warhol superstar Ultra Violet (still looking like a Factory Girl), Jay Johnson, Liz Kelly, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Krista Krieger, Louise Tabbiner, Andres and Lauren Santo Domingo, Jesse

Back in Manhattan, e Four Sea-sons Grill Room hosts a campaign launch for Pin Down Bladder Can-cer. e evening honors the late re-tail legend Marvin Traub and Mayor Bloomberg makes a special visit to o er a heartfelt tribute. You don’t have to be part of the in-crowd to eat with them. But we’re not saying it doesn’t help. Artan Gjoni, the managing partner of the eatery who was previously at Mercer Kitchen

and Norwood, says the clientele at this painfully chic restaurant didn’t happen by accident.

“I come from a good line of work places, so I’ve always had very loyal customers and friends coming by,” he explains of the large number of regulars. “I always had the ‘West Village cli-ent.’ For this place I wanted to get more of an artsy feel of the Lower East Side, more than people who were just eaters and taste-makers—I wanted to get the young, in-tellectual crowd who also appreciated our menu—and we're getting that so far.”

Ken & Cook—whose name is a homage to its loca-tion on Kenmare Street—is drawing quite a set of A-listers to boot. Right after it opened its doors in the former Travertine space, the restaurant held the after party for the lm Hick, which drew the likes of Emma Roberts, Chloë Grace Moretz, Rory Culkin and Charlotte Ronson.

“I was pretty shocked to see Russell Simmons here dur-ing the Cinema Society [party for Hick],” a star-struck Chef Richard Diamonte, who also worked at Mercer Kitchen, admitted. In July, Ken & Cook also hosted the Ponies premiere after party, where it housed Michael Stipe, Vincent Piazza, Parker Posey and Natasha Lyonne. While celebrities may make appearances, it’s models and the art crowd that are the norm. “ ere are a lot of photography and modeling agencies around here,” Gjoni adds. at was the point. And if it’s a scene you’re looking for, he advises you come between 9:30 p.m.-10 p.m. when the restaurant, which is done-up like a 1960s brasserie, is at its busiest with late night diners. But don’t expect to get a reservation without knowing someone. “I try to please everyone, but it’s kind of biting me back,” the handsome managing part-ner sighs. “We don’t take reservations so the best way to do it is to know somebody here and call.”

Krista Krieger is obsessed with Africa. She has been to the continent three times since January and stopped counting after more than twelve trips. In 2007, after funding the renovation of a preschool she had visited, Krieger joined the board of

the Africa Foundation which works with its cor-porate partner &Beyond to raise money for basic necessities in the war-torn and economically des-perate African villages. “Africa Foundation does a lot of brick-and-mortar type projects, so it’s easy to show donors where the money has gone,” Krieger explains. “ is is one of the main things that at-tracted me to the organization—the transparency of where the funds have gone.”

is summer, Krieger gathered a group of friends from New York’s art world and high society to ex-perience safari adventures at Phinda Private Game Reserve—a luxurious, eco-friendly lodge on 56,800 acres of prime wilderness (aka “the bush”) in Kwa-Zulu-Natal, South Africa. Nina Griscom came, as did art patron Beth Rudin DeWoody (who fund-ed a garden and water tank in the area) and her -ancé photographer Firooz Zahedi (having a world class photographer is always a plus on safari) and her creative children Carlton and Kyle DeWoody. Also, there was artist Ryan McGinness who made a print to bene t the Africa Foundation that will be sold through e Pace Gallery. “I found the timing serendipitous because I was working on a body of African art,” McGinness says.

Safari is not for the lazy socialite who likes to sip vino on the beach in St. Tropez. Leave the jewels at home. “Pack clothes that you don’t care if they get destroyed,” advises Krieger with a wink.

house and escorts you to the main lodge. (If you dare go unaccompanied, you could be attacked by a leopard, no joke!) After co ee, you hit the terrain. Within days we had spotted the big ve: lion, leopard, elephant, bu alo and rhino. We even saw a kill (involving a pride of lions and an unlucky male nyala) that left us less hungry at the gour-met breakfast spread that awaits guests after every morn-ing drive. To say that witnessing the immense amount of wild animal life is astounding is an understatement. After two days, seeing herds of zebra and enormous gira es starts to feel like home.

We also visited a local school where McGinness hung his African-inspired prints. On the last night, we held a costume party (I went as Peter Beard, sarong and all, while Carlton did African Dictator and Kyle was a Zulu princess) that ended with a dance-o as monkeys and zebras literally watched us loopy Americans boogie to old-school disco.

Safari in Africa is a total yin and yang. You tough it, kind of, on treks through the bush, then kick-back in the luxury of Phinda’s amazing resorts. You visit a local village that survives on nothing, and then eat the most amazing meal at Phinda’s traditional African boma under the stars. But make no mistake, the Africa Foun-dation is about helping, and one dollar goes a long way. On October 9, the organization is hosting a safari-themed fundraiser in New York where they will recreate a bush din-ner. Time to bust out the Zulu fabrics I scored in Johannesburg. To get your ticket, go to www.africafoundation.org and start planning your safari chic look today. If you need a beaded brace-let, I have some I can loan you.

Next Month:

Beach Club BluesS ixth grade was dunzo! I snatched my skateboard, stashed

in a bush outside Barclay School, and hit the sidewalk with a slap and roar of joy. After narrowly avoiding prison, aka Grace Farm, that boarding school for “troubled youth” in the boondocks of Maine, I celebrated the start of summer with eight packs of Pop Rocks, all shoved in my mouth at

one time. Each sugary snap created a chorus of freedom ringing down East 74th Street.

My parents love “the country,” meaning Southampton, but I way pre-fer the city unless it’s summer when I can boogie board. So I quietly sat in our green station wagon with my headphones on as my parents drove the two hours to Southampton. My punk rock playlist drowned out most of their annoying conversation, which centered on some “ghastly” (my mom’s favorite word for anything she didn’t like from people to someone’s shoes) divorced woman who had been black balled from the beach club where I basically spent every day all summer.

The beach club isn’t all that sucky. You can charge ice cream all day and crawl under the wood planks of the locker rooms and look through the cracks as chicks change into their bathing suits.

My first day back at the beach club, I reunited with my gang: Chip-per, Steven, Teddy and Frick. After bacon cheeseburgers, I decided we needed some action. There’s this really, really old dude named Isadore Knopp who collects the beach towels embroidered with a blue seahorse, and loads them into a big white canvas hamper on wheels that he rolls to a laundry room behind the lockers.

I had a brainstorm. When Knopp wasn’t looking, I put a black ban-

dana over my face like a gang-ster and holding my tennis racket, jumped in the ham-per, hidden under the salty smelling, fluffy white towels. Knopp started his rounds, tossing towels on top of me. He wheeled the cart a bit slower, but was too dumb to notice that there was a live kid inside.

We finally arrived to the noise of ten industrial size washer and dryers in a depress-ing room that looked like a se-

rial killer’s lair. Knopp began to unload the towels. But just when

he reached down for a third hand-ful, I jumped up holding my tennis racket like a machine gun, making really loud rifle fire sounds. Knopp made an animal-like dying groan

and holding his heart as if shot, prac-tically fell out the door. I was laugh-

ing so hard; I could barely breath and my buddies, crouched under the one narrow window, cracked up uncontrollably.

After Knopp had vanished, I ran out and high-fived my group. Soon dozens of kids surrounded me as I retold the story of my super successful prank. I was a star!

Suddenly, mid-sentence, I felt two fingers pinch me by the ear. “Ouch,” I yelled in pain.

The fingers belonged to the beach club manager Mr. Preston, a nosy fatso in green pants with blue whales. How fitting.

Before I knew it, I was in Mr. Preston’s office, which was decorated with a color pic-ture of him and a fat lady in a Lilly Pulitzer tent that I guessed was his wife.”“Charlie Campbell, do you realize that you could have killed Mr. Knopp?” he asked me with total disdain in every syllable. “They should lock you up and throw away the key. Mr. Knopp had to go home for the day. He said he has never been more shaken and dis-traught in his life.” I tried my best not to smirk. “I’m sorry,” I replied, looking down at the temporary tattoo of a grinning skull on my ankle. “It was just meant to be an innocent joke.”

Mr. Preston’s ruddy apple cheeks grew red-der. “Well guess what Charlie Campbell? Your summer has just come to an abrupt halt.” “What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked.“You have no idea what awaits you,” Mr. Preston declared, standing up with his pudgy hands on the desk. “Oh Charlie Campbell, you have no idea.”

LATE NIGHT IN UWS Two entrepreneurs —Luis Gonzalez Rul from Mexico City, and Pablo Granja from Uru-guay—have taken over the vast space that housed Calle Ocho, and brought in Roman chef Andrea Cobbe, who had worked at several Michelin star establishments. eir coastal Northern Italian restaurant, due in September, will empha-size seafood such as scallops with lavender butter and lima beans, homemade pasta such as black ravi-oli with shrimp, and game meats. Wood and stone elements along with soaring ceiling and a dramatic skylight give a loft feel. Couple that with a menu o ered until 12:30 a.m. on weeknights and 1:30 a.m. on weekends, and the duo is aiming for a sensibility not often found on the Upper West Side. "Corvo Bianco's aims to bring a downtown concept uptown," says Rul. B.L.

Onassis Clothing opens at Rockefeller Center

We cha ed with creative director Andreu David 3 to get the scoop on the new store and the fall collection. SCENE :What are you most excited about with the new Onassis store? David: I am most excited to see the opportunity to reach a new market. With the Rockefeller location, there is an opportunity to reach a customer base diff erent than that you would fi nd in Soho.

The store space is about half the size of our Soho concept store. Thus, the

assortment will be limited runs and selected styles. SCENE: Tell us about the Fall 2012 Onassis collection.David: We took a spin of 1930's British style from old universities. We took the best from the Brits and combined it with what Onassis does best: garment-dyed product and fabric mixing. We even imported and used fabrics from a well-established English woolen mill. Although our strength is washed product, Onassis' Fall 2012 collection has taken a step further towards sophistication by off ering 3-piece wool separates.

It's just fun!SCENE: What fl avors do you recommend for fall?Goodman: We will have fall fl avors such as pumpkin and egg nogg pudding when the time comes. ommanding the foot of the red carpet, Andrew Saffir greets his guests the only way he knows how, with that warm and endearing smile of his, and a hint of excitement peeking through the lenses of his wire eyeglasses. There to personally welcome each ar-rival—announced by the unmistakable cloud of flickering flashbulbs—he only occasionally jumps onto the carpet to get in a few shots with his friends.

Flashing his trademark smile, Saffir is posing with the actors, editors, directors, producers, supermodels and so-cialites who consistently turn up at the screenings and af-ter parties hosted by Saffir and the company he founded, the Cinema Society.

The occasion is a screening of the gritty, NC-17-rated dark comedy Killer Joe and the guest list is as star-studded as it is distinct. Actors mingle with directors and design-ers, editors hover at the bar with models while socialites laugh with photographers. Matthew McConaughey, Gina Gershon, John Stamos, Ethan Cohen, Stefano Tonchi, Terry Richardson and Nicky Hilton have all turned up at the cozy screening room of the Tribeca Grand Hotel for Willliam Friedkin’s flick about a family’s plot to have their mother murdered to cash in on her life insurance.

But star-studded crowds are something Saffir is used to. In fact, standing in front of the audience to introduce the film, Saffir is as calm and collected as a host throwing an intimate dinner party for friends in his own home.

S affir fell into the movie business somewhat fortuitously. When a friend asked the former fashion executive to help throw the premiere of Proof in 2005, Saffir made a few calls, built a mini state-of-the-art theatre inside a Rich-ard Meier building on Charles Street, and

compiled an intimate guest list of select actors, press and New York notables. The night of the premiere, Saffir host-ed the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Lauren Bacall, Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Iman, and introduced Manhattan to what is now known as the Cinema Society.

At a time when studios were footing the large bill for extravagant premieres, the Cinema Society offered a more targeted approach at creating buzz. “I wanted to do some-thing smaller and more intimate,” says Saffir, “to create an unusual and eclectic salon for film that would make for a more dynamic and fun evening.”

A recent outdoor screening of Robot and Frank held at a private residence in East Hampton involved cocktails and dinner around the pool, followed by a bonfire and s'mores on the beach where Susan Sarandon, John Slattery, Liv Ty-ler and Zosia Mamet all hung out around haystacks.

But lavish events aren’t something Saffir shies away from either; he’s also hosted the New York premieres of blockbusters like The Hunger Games and the Twilight trilogy.

If you’re thinking he makes this sound too easy, you’d be right. It’s necessary to point out that Saffir might just be one of the most hard-working people in the city. He fit this interview in his schedule while on vacation in Positano with his boyfriend of 15 years, Daniel Benedict. The first thing Saffir mentions is the hotel he is staying at, which used to belong to the famed Italian film direc-tor Franco Zeffirelli (the man behind the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet, among other classics).

The fact that Saffir lives and breathes film, even while on vacation, plays an obvious role in helping him turn his invitations into one of the most coveted in Manhattan.

“I’ve always had a yen for film, it’s what I studied in school,” says Saffir who attended the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU before he began working as a marketing ex-ecutive at Ralph Lauren—a job that proved lucrative for Saffir when he later looked to fashion brands to sponsor his screenings. “Films, actors and designers have such a strong relationship; so many designers are inspired by film,” says Saffir. Dior put its name on the Cinema So-ciety’s first invitation for Proof and it wasn’t long before

brands like Gucci, Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Brooks Brothers and DKNY followed, along with other, more di-verse brands, like American Express, Volvo, DeLeón Te-quila and RentTheRunway.com.

The appeal of Saffir’s curated guest list is undeni-able. Cinema Society regulars include Russell Simmons, the Ronson/Dexter-Jones clan, Olivia Palermo, Donna Karan—but everyone from Ron Perelman to Lena Dun-ham has attended one of Saffir’s screenings.

When he founded the Cinema Society seven years ago, Saffir wasn’t the only one in the New York movie-premiere business. Peggy Siegal, the 60-something über-publicist, had a firm grip on the movie industry as Hollywood studios and producers relied on her vast social network for a large, glitzy turnout. But when Saffir came into the

picture (no pun intended), his “list” seemed to rival Sie-gal’s—though Saffir’s is perhaps more New York-centric (Siegal’s events span the country). “He has an impressive mailing list,” confirmed Fern Mallis, a Cinema Society regular who calls Saffir “an entity to be reckoned with” and lauded his business ethic. “I greatly admire Andrew and how he created the Cinema Society,” says Mallis, “He makes terrific sponsor deals which everyone benefits from and his screenings are always of movies you want to see or are not on anyone’s radar yet [...] Having your name on a seat to see a movie before anyone else really works.”

Rachel Roy, another familiar face at Saffir’s events, agrees: “Andrew’s screenings and after-parties are equal parts sexy and chic. He always has a fun crowd and yet it is never ‘too’ crowded, so you can always chillax, see old friends and enjoy the energy.”

T hough he had to do his fair share of beg-ging and groveling at first, it wasn’t long before studios took notice of his unique ap-proach to marketing—not to mention that the sponsors Saffir recruits for his events helped shorten the studios’ bill. “It got eas-

ier as time went on,” says Saffir, “I don’t have to do much begging these days! But there are still certain films that want an old fashioned, big studio premiere.”

Though the film is obviously the focus of the Cinema Society’s events, Saffir’s after-parties seem just as impor-tant, if not more, when it comes to luring A-listers and local celebrities. Held at the trendiest venues in town, the parties draw an even larger crowd to places like the Boom Boom Room, Top of the Standard, Jimmy at the James Hotel—essentially every club the socially conscious would want to be seen at. The after-party for Killer Joe took place under Amy Sacco’s freshly polished, twirling chandelier inside the new No. 8—Courtney Love, Mélanie Laurent and Alan Cumming were among the names to join the fête later that night.

If there’s one thing everyone seems to take note of when meeting Saffir, it’s how unbelievably kind he is—a charac-teristic most people seemed surprised by, given his social status and the industry he works in. “It is rare that some-one in Andrew’s position is as kind as he is successful, but he is truly one of the kindest people I know,” says Roy.When it comes to expanding the Cinema Society beyond

the limits of New York State, Saffir admits he’s thought about it, “I get asked that a lot, but I don’t see it happen-ing just yet” he adds, “So much of what I do is so per-sonal, I think I’d have to clone myself.” That’s the other thing about Saffir; everything he does, he does personally. Invitations come directly from Saffir himself, and emails sent to his non-descript address are consistently answered within minutes. And yes, he’s been told he is glued to his blackberry. “I get that a lot,” he says, adding that he gets about a 100 emails a day on average. His “staff” includes a handful of young employees he reaches out to for help during the actual events; Saffir knows how to handle ev-erything else.

Don’t go looking for a Cinema Society Facebook page, Twitter account, or even website—because you won’t find any. Not that Saffir purposefully avoids resorting to social media; “I’m not trying to be highfalutin, it just happened that way,” he says, “and I can be a little obsessive about cer-tain things, so if I was on Facebook I would want to read everything, know everything. I can barely get through all the newspapers and magazines, I don’t think I can handle another stream!”

Saffir’s obliviousness to social media hasn’t hindered the success of the Cinema Society. If anything, it reinforces the exclusive and personal feel of his company. When I ask Saffir if he’s ever been star-struck by one of his guests, he tells me that Woody Allen makes him fumble his words and go weak at the knees—a detail which seems surprising for someone who rubs elbows with half of Hol-lywood week after week. But being the true New Yorker that he is, Saffir admits that Allen is “like a God” to him. (The Cinema Society hosted the New York premieres of both Midnight in Paris last year, and To Rome With Love last month; both of which had Allen in attendance.)

Saffir is in essence, living his dream. “Seven years ago I set out to do something I’d always wanted to do, not knowing what the outcome would be, and today it’s a solid business, and I love it,” says Saffir. When asked if there’s anyone he is dying to work with but hasn’t yet, the only names Saffir can come up with are those of deceased actors; Charlie Chaplin and Billy Wilder.

As for that golden address book of his, Saffir credits his hometown; “I’m lucky to have lived in New York for so long—I know enough people to call on.”

“Seven yearS ago

q/aWhen did you move from Germany to neW york? I moved to New York about seven or eight years ago. In Germany, we finish school after 13 years and you have to do military service or social service—it’s mandatory—so I served in the military. Right after that I started studying business economics in Hamburg for three years, took a year off and started modeling a little on the side. I went to Paris, Milan and London and after a year I came back to study cultural science. Once that was done, my agency in New York, Wilhemina, asked me if I wanted to come to New York and make this [modeling] a full-time job. But there’s so many other things I do on the side. I am also a photographer. Olivia and I work on editorial for her website [www.oliviapalermo.com]. Unfortunately we both travel so much that we don’t always have a lot of time but we frequently work on a section for Olivia’s site called ‘I Want What She’s Wearing’ and I’ll shoot her editorially. Recently, I snatched two new photography jobs, so I am looking forward to that. At some point I will be able to make the full transition into photography. My modeling work is just very busy at the moment.

SpeakinG of modelinG, you’ve been travelinG all Summer for jobS, Where to next? I have to go back to a job in Germany for Hugo Boss. Right after that, I have another job in London; from there I fly to Ibiza for a good 12-day sum-mer vacation. Then I’m going to the South of France and Majorca for other jobs. In September I usually spend time in New York for campaign season. I just shot a DKNY advertisement with Ashley Greene and Peter Lindbergh. Even though I’m not in New York very much this summer, the 3 weeks in September is the perfect end with a still warm summer at home.

When you do find time, Where are your favorite placeS to Go in neW york? My all time favorite place that is Cafe Gitane on Mott Street. It’s a really nice spot—the food is fantastic and it’s very well priced. I like going out to dinner and having the option of doing something after and ACME has a really cool bar so it’s fun to stay there after you eat. I also love Sant Ambroeus in the West Village—which is probably one of my favorite areas next to Dumbo—but I like Le Bilboquet, as well. We drive uptown quite a bit because Olivia’s mom lives up there so we have lunch with her or go to the park.

Why did you chooSe to live in brooklyn? I love being in Brooklyn. I didn’t have a preconceived notion of mov-

ing to New York and living in a certain neighborhood. I just came here and a friend of mind referred me to an apartment that happened to be in Brooklyn Heights. It was late August and it was this beautiful, European-like area. I ended up staying there for about three years with my flat mate, my best friend from Montreal, and at some point we slowly moved over to Dumbo. I wanted to live in this particular building [in Dumbo] and my friend and I were shown a few places, including a beautiful loft, so we moved right in. At the time, Olivia was living in Tribeca, but about a year later we both decided it was time to stop going back and forth [to each of our apartments] so we found a new apartment in the building I was living in. We’re really happy—we’ve been there together for about three years now.

aS a native upper eaSt Sider, did you have to con-vince olivia to move to brooklyn? The building we

live in makes the transition very easy. We have the two parks in front of the house, we have a beautiful view and Olivia likes to get away from the city just like me. Of course it was new for her, but we have a little dog and she sees so many upsides of living here. Now she doesn’t want to live anywhere else. A lot of people have that [feeling] with Dumbo I think.

you are datinG an international Style icon and you, yourSelf, are one of the moSt Well-dreSSed men in neW york. What are you GoinG to be WearinG thiS fall? I have a few things that are fall related, like a herring-bone three-piece Zegna suit, but other-wise I hardly have trend-related things. Most of my fashion is the typical Italian/

English way of dressing without too many things that you’ll see on fashion blogs or on the runway. For classic wear I have a few suits that I just had made by my tailor in Germany, who I’m really fortunate to have. A friend intro-duced me to him and now we work together all the time. I can tell him exactly what colors and fabrics I’d like and he gets them to me in 6-8 weeks. It’s really nice to have a suit that I designed and fits the way I like. For leisure wear, a lot of my stuff is Bruno Cucinelli. I like to always pair classics with subtle details. I don’t wear much jewelry except for maybe a watch. I tend to wear tassel shoes for some reason, but again, they aren’t trend-related—though they might have different colors for the season. I like cargo and chino pants, and I would probably always wear a but-ton down and blazer or sports jacket.

It was great—the audi-ence loved it and that took some pressure off of her. Plus, I know it meant a lot to him.”

“Him” refers to his father, legendary photographer Arthur Elgort. Ansel had been on stage to assist Cod-dington in presenting Elgort with the CFDA Board of Directors’ Special Tribute Award. “He’s just himself, and at the same time he does what he loves. He’s a true artist,” Elgort says of his dad, a main source of inspira-tion. The younger Elgort’s down-to-Earth nature is demonstrated through his pride of his dad’s work ethic: “He’s never a diva or thinks he’s better than anyone else. He’s honored that people like what he does and appre-ciate his work.” Elgort is determined to follow in those footsteps—and that's the attitude that has landed him on slews of stages and in front of countless cameras. As a child, Elgort’s dad often took him along on shoots. “He would just want us in the background. There’s a shot he took of Karolina Kurkova in a trailer and I’m sitting in the background playing a computer game. Because we grew up with cameras in front of us we didn’t care about being in a picture, we were just there.”

It’s also safe to say the artistic genes “were just there.” Elgort’s mother is Norwegian-born opera director Grethe Holby. He says his love for performing first came at the tender age of nine, when he danced in The Nutcracker and Swan Lake at Lincoln Center with the New York City Bal-let. “I was in front of 3,000 people and I was so in love with it, supposedly I went to my mother and said ‘Mom, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.’” Though he didn’t necessarily love ballet, he loved performing, and quickly started taking singing, dancing and acting classes. “I feel most comfortable on stage,” Elgort says, matter-of-factly.

Elgort eventually traded up his education at Trin-ity School for the Professional Children’s School (PCS), where actors such as Macaulay Culkin, Scarlett Johansson and Uma Thurman also got their start. “My mom pulled me out [of Trinity] because they gave me the ensemble role and I just wasn’t deserving of it. I deserved a better role!” he laughs, “or so we thought.” At PCS, Elgort spent half the day on academics and half the day on art. Throughout this time, he spent seven summers at Stagedoor Manor, the performing arts camp for kids in the Catskills, warm-ing up with roles such as Collins in Rent and the title role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Then, for his freshman year, Elgort auditioned at LaGuardia

High School—whose famous alumni include Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Aniston and Adrien Brody—where he was accepted and quickly landed roles such as the heartthrob Link Larkin in Hairspray and the hand-some Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls.

Then, at age eighteen and still in high school, Elgort made his professional stage debut with the Manhattan Theatre Club at the opening of Regrets, an off-Broadway play set in 1950s Nevada. “LaGuardia was such a profes-sional atmosphere, I may have been a senior while doing Regrets, but I was ready. I had done theater three years in a row, eight times a week, with a full orchestra, with 1,200 seats sold out every night,” Elgort says with confidence. “It’s what I love, it’s what comes easy to me.”

Elgort’s role in Regrets landed him alongside seasoned actress Alexis Bledel (of Mad Men and most famously, Gilmore Girls), but he didn’t let it go to his head. “It was really nice doing our show, it was in a more intimate the-ater,” he humbly continues, “and being able to go on stage every night and do what I love, that was the best feeling. In fact, I miss stage now.” He longs for it because his cur-rent gig takes him off stage and on screen.

Come 2013, Elgort will make his big-screen debut in the latest film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 cult nov-el, Carrie, originally released in 1976 starring Sissy Spacek and John Travolta—which he admits he still hasn’t seen. “I want to approach it like it's totally new,” Elgort states wisely, of his role as Carrie's friend and prom date, Tom-my Ross.

Elgort’s been back and forth to film in Toronto amidst veteran Julianne Moore and breakout star Chloë Moretz, but while back in New York, Elgort confesses his love for this city—in particular Central Park—where he often walks his yellow and black labrador retrievers. “I love it because it gives you a minute to feel out of the city, it’s like a sanctuary on the Upper West Side where I live, it’s very quiet.” However, Elgort says he’s willing to go wherever the work takes him. As for the near future, Elgort will not be going to college this fall; he’s made up his mind, he’s going to act. And though he has no set plans just yet, one may find him staying active at Trinity Boxing Club or rock climbing at Brooklyn Boulders, or having dinner at Shun Lee Palace. “I go there a lot,” Elgort admits, “I guess I’m sort of a creature of habit.”

No matter what happens next, one thing for sure is all eyes are on Ansel. “There’s stuff brewing. Good stuff brewing. Probably film—something with a great script, something artistic and hopefully with a great director.” Afterall, Ansel never wanted to be just a pretty face, he wanted to be a serious actor, singer or dancer. (But at six-foot-three, this doe-eyed, pouty-lipped James Dean look-alike is undoubtedly striking in front of the camera.) “I love going all the way wearing the most dapper suit—ei-ther Thom Browne or Paul Smith—and blue suede shoes. Or, I go with a white t-shirt paired with some vintage jeans and look real casual. I love the 50s, it’s my favorite era,” reitterating his admiration for certain Hollywood icons.

But when asked if he sees himself (or strives to be seen) as the next Brad Pitt, Elgort recalls those actors of 50s. “I really respect actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando because they simply loved acting. I really couldn’t care less about being a movie star. I just love what I do.” So at this very moment, Elgort has no regrets.

Jill Kargman: What was the eureka moment that made you want to go into medicine?Chairman miChael Brodman, md: I was working as an engineer and I completely hated it. I realized that I shouldn’t do what everyone thinks I should do because I’m good at it, I should do what I want to do. Then, in medical school, the rotation I had the most fun at was OBGYN. I learned that 90 percent of what you do is the routine—that’s the part you have to like. I like working with people, I like working with my hands, I like action. I wanted to have long-term relationships with my patients and the only field you’re really allowed to do that is OBGYN. Women are great patients because they’re open, they talk. I love this practice because I have patients I’ve been taking care of forever.

Kargman: You're right—I feel so close to my doctors, I love them. I heard you also love woodworking. Is it hard to make the switch in your head when you finish a hysterectomy and then you go build a gazebo? (laughs)Brodman: I don’t really switch gears. It’s still working with my hands. Whether I’m performing surgery or making a table, I have an image in my head of what it’s suppose to look like. However, when I’m woodworking I can turn my brain off a little. I get lost in what I’m doing. It’s a way of sort of purging whatever’s going on in my head.

Kargman: How do you get through your personal life when you’re sleeping on a gurney and on-call so much?Brodman: Well to be honest, I didn’t do it well early

on. You can't come home and only talk about work, it creates problems. I think that it’s really hard to get through those years. One advantage was that when I was working 110 hours a week my wife and family understood why I was tired all the time. The critical thing is balancing work with the rest of the world. You can’t get absorbed with thinking, ‘oh I just saved a 7-year-old and nothing else is as important.’ If you take that attitude then the world just seems so unrelatable. The critical piece is when you’re working, you're working and when you’re off, you have to shift gears.

Kargman: Tell me about delivering your first baby.Brodman: It just blew me out of the water. It’s the most amazing thing you could ever watch and it only confirmed that I wanted to be in this field. Again, it’s a happy field. It’s exciting and you develop relationships with your patients over time. If you put a group of doctors together, I guarantee no one will complain about what they do. We just love what we do.

Kargman: You are then involved in so many lives—you’re

part of their history. Brodman: Exactly. People come up to me today and still say, "You delivered me!"

Kargman: You are like the mayor of Mount Sinai—everyone’s saluting you.Brodman: Well, I’ve been here forever.

"The critical piece is when you’re working, you’re working and when you’re off, you have to shift gears."

For more than 80 years, Harry’s Shoes has called New York City home—and this September, the family-run company will unveil its expanded store at 2299

Broadway, a er a four-month renovation that more than doubled its current selling space. The new and improved store will include new display walls and tables, a unique salon-style women’s section with banque e seating, and an enhanced selection of bridge and designer shoes.

Harry’s Shoes fi rst opened in 1931, when Harry Goldberg’s brother-in-law suggested he open a store at Fi h Avenue and 116th Street. Knowing very li le about the shoe business, Harry led the store to great success by earning a reputation of unsurpassed customer service. Harry’s son, Joe, began learning the business at age 12 and worked regularly at the store until it came his turn to manage a second Harry’s Shoes in the South Bronx. Though the original store closed in the 1960s, Joe opened the third store at its current location at Broadway and 83rd Street in 1975.

Joe Goldberg, the father of Harry’s Shoes, passed away in March 2012, but even at 83, he

was instrumental in the negotiation, design and merchandising of the expansion. “Our dad was a true visionary when he decided to open a Harry’s Shoes on the Upper West Side nearly 40 years ago,” said Robert Goldberg, who, with his sister, Randi Goldberg, is a third-generation store owner and manager. “In 1975, this area of Manha an was less than desirable, but dad had the foresight—and determination—to open a store in the tradition of his father, off ering the very best in customer service, quality and selection in a neighborhood he knew would eventually thrive with families and loyal customers. This expansion is truly his legacy,” says Robert. Determined to always provide the best for their customers, the store remained open during most of the renovation with very li le interruption to the business.

The renovated Harry’s Shoes will open September 6 and the celebration will include a Mayoral Proclamation, raffles and free gifts with purchase. The company has also teamed with Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization that collects new and gently worn shoes for those in need and will conduct a month-long shoe drive.

Eight decades after the opening of its first store, Harry’s Shoes celebrates its

expansion on the Upper West Side

Manhattan's real estate experts share their thoughts on the market and what's in store for the fall

FALL forecastHow do you see tHe ManHattan real estate Market now? Manhattan real estate remains one of the strongest hard asset classes. What other asset class can you invest your money in and have value appreciation while at the same time, live in or acquire income from it?

Manhattan's real estate experts share their thoughts on the market and what's in store for the fall

FALLforecastWhat do you foresee for the fall real estate market? are prices going up? The highest prices will be paid when buyers feel they are getting value for the property features they consider most important. New York seems a safe haven for global buyers seeking a strong, long-term investment.

What neighborhoods do you think Will be the most sought-after in the fall? The best locations will always be the most sought after: the Upper East Side, Fifth and Park Avenues, Central Park West, Time Warner and the incomparable 15 Central Park West.

have you noticed any trends in the market for the fall? Buyers at the upper-end focus more than ever on what they feel is “the best” or “prime of its kind.”

What do you think makes you a successful broker? Why should buyers/sellers choose you? My sellers and buyers would have to answer that, but hopefully my track record helps illuminate the second point. Since just 2006 I have sold 51 townhouses with a value exceeding $793 million dollars as well as several high-end condo sales, including two recent sales in the Tower of 15 Central Park West, each for over $20 million.

Manhattan's real estate experts share their thoughts on the market and what's in store for the fall

FALLforecastWhat do you foresee for the fall real estate market? are prices going up? Continued demand for large luxury properties. I expect prices will continue to rise steadily on trophy high-end apartments in New York.

What neighborhoods do you think Will be the most sought-after in the fall? The Upper East Side and Tribeca.

have you noticed any trends in the market for the fall? Overall trends going into fall are continued demand for large open spaces versus chopped up rooms. New York City is on an island and size matters. The best way to accent size is to keep it white, bright and minimally furnished.

What do you think makes you a successful broker? Why should buyers/sellers choose you? What makes me a successful broker is that I am a great listener who can deliver, with a strong business sense and great eye. Customer service is key. Sometimes a buyer does not know what he wants but instead what he doesn’t want. Representing buyers, I listen to learn as much as possible about who they

are and what their needs are to find them the right property. I also educate my clients on the market through data and not personal opinion. I have a laser focus on delivering results and use an operational business approach.

For sellers representing properties I approach launching a listing like opening a store for the first time. Working previously as a Vice President in Store Design, Visual and Marketing for 15+ years in retail enables me to be a stager, marketing guru and a broker, all at the same time. A client’s property is a brand and a business. It is a visual experience and it must be marketed strategically. Before a listing is live, I spend a lot of time at the property, analyzing it and preparing it to ensure that it is presented the best way possible. I am vocal about what needs to happen to make a property sell and will roll up my sleeves to get it done.

2ND QUARTER 2012 Compared to a year ago, the average price of a Manha an apartment rose slightly to $1,451,155. The median price rose 2 percent to $850,000 and the number of sales rose 5 percent. New York City in 2012 has seen its strongest job growth in decades, with over 70,000 private-sector jobs created through May. Perhaps most surprising has been the level of employment on Wall Street, which has added 3,500 workers this year and is at its highest employment level since February 2009. A strong local economy, the appeal of Manha an real estate and record low interest rates have kept demand, although price sensitive, very strong. At the same time supply has declined, with 13 percent fewer apartments available than a year ago.

Live above Petrossian in this Landmark building, designed by Harde & Short in 1908. The Alwyn Court, built as “A House of Select Residences” was transformed in 1936 into 75 three-, four-, and five-room apartments. Magnificent proportions compliment the intact Pre- war details including ceiling heights of up to eleven feet, beautiful parquet flooring and wood burning fireplaces. The façade follows the style of François I, who directed the building of some of the finest chateaux in the Loire Valley.

We are quite at home in this magnificent building, having sold twenty apartments here over the years. A selection of fine apart-ments is available including a “no board approval” sale and possible combinations of up to eleven rooms. The Alwyn Court is located at 180 West 58th Street, just one block from Central Park South and Carnegie Hall. Call for us for an appointment.
