SCD in Frankfurt The Frankfurt Scottish Country Dance Club was founded nearly 50 years ago and consists of several dozen members between the ages of 20 and 70 (!). Our certified dance teachers present a programme with lots of variety. Dance Night Our weekly dance night appeals to beginners and more advanced dancers and o=ers instruction and social dancing. We meet every Tuesday (except during school holidays) from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the gymnasium of the Herderschule (near the Zoo). Demonstrations and ceilidhs While SCD is primarily social dancing, it is also fascinating to look at. Therefore we regularly perform—for example, at the Frankfurter Museumsuferfest, at company events or private celebrations. We also organise »ceilidhs«, Scottish dance ses- sions with simple dances for everyone, for in- stance, at weddings or company parties. Spring Ball The year’s highlight is our »Spring Ball« in mid-April, where dancers from all over Germany and abroad come to celebrate with us. Conversely, members of our club often at- tend events put on by other groups. What is Scottish Dancing?Scottish CountryDancing (SCD)is an updatedform of the ball-room dance ofthe 18th cen-tury. In a »set«,gentlemen andladies are fac-ing each otherto dance a se-quence of formations involving solo figuresand those for several couples. A handful ofbasic formations are combined into diversedances. We dance lively reels and jigs andgraceful strathspeys. A fixed partner or specialequipment are not necessary.

SCD appeals to the whole person: physicalmovement, mental challenge and social in-teraction in the group. SCD brings togetherall ages in a common activity which involveseveryone according to their ability.

SCD is not the reconstruction of the long-gonepast, but a living and ongoing tradition. Thereis a steady flow of new dances and music. SCDis standardised world-wide, from Edinburgh toTokyo, from Moscow to New York one can eas-ily join in. The basics can be learned during aweek-end workshop or a few months’ worth ofweekly dancing—but perfectionists will alwaysfind new challenges.ASILOMAR ROMANTIC Cuthbertson: SanF Coll 2 ** S321 2 31 2 3Dbl Fig of 8 1 2P N[2) S 12 312 3 S S S

SCD at Your Event . . .

Would you like to give a gen-uine »Scottish touch« to yourwedding or family celebration, your company party or productpresentation? We can perform,or lead simple dances »foreveryone«—with feet-tappingmusic and for an absolutely»Scottish« fee!

At demonstrations we dancecountry and highland dances and require a flatarea of approximately 20’ by 15’—the biggerthe better! A demonstration team consists of2 to 8 dancers (subject to negotiation). Pleasecontact us several weeks in advance.

Ceilidhs areScottish danceevents with sim-ple circle, coupleor group dances. No previousknowledge of

dancing is required, and success is practicallyautomatic. Our dance teachers have lots of ex-perience with dance calling, and we can bringrecorded music or arrange for a live band. Thisalso requires some advance notice.

». . . last week’s ceilidh was a big success. All ourcolleagues keep talking about it and the picturesshow how much fun they had.«
