SCC Student Haroon Kahn Receives Multiple Honors
The SCC Honors Program, science and health departments and STEM Program, should be very proud of
of their efforts in support of SCC student, Haroon Kahn, electrical engineering major, who was
recognized by the RSCCD Board of Trustees on Monday, April 14. To provide a quick synopsis of
Haroon’s most recent accomplishments:
• Received the Director’s Scholarship award, the highest honor the Honors Transfer Council of
California Research Conference (HTCC) bestows on a student, for his research on “Simulating
Binary Black Hole Mergers to Predict Gravitational Waveforms,” as mentioned last week in Rick
Adams’ (English) e-mail regarding the award.
• Selected to participate in an intensive five- week undergraduate STEM research experience at
Cal State University, Fullerton. His research, with the Gravitational Wave Physics and the
Astronomy Center, focused on the mergers of binary-black-hole systems using computer
simulations on the ORCA cluster.
• Chosen in February as one of forty college students from across the nation to participate in
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to take part in the National Community College Aerospace
Scholars Program. Haroon’s hypothetical Mars mission proposal, “The Mars Subterranean
Hydrothermal Exploration Rover – MaSHER” skyrocketed his admittance into the program with a
97% score, while the average score was 30%.
Haroon will transfer into a 4-year university this fall and SCC wishes him continued success throughout
his educational career. We applaud him for leaving an indelible impression on all of us at Santiago
Canyon College.

Theatre Tradition Started by Lamourelle
The OC Register recently published an article about the children’s
theater started by Regina Lamourelle (Human Development) and
another parent in Rancho Santa Margarita in 1993. After 21 years,
the Arroyo Vista Children’s Theater continues to produce an annual
musical show, which casts about 100 first- through fifth-graders,
teaching them how to prepare for a theatrical production. They play
all roles on stage and many offstage roles.
Lamourelle Participates and Presents at Conferences
Regina Lamourelle (Human Development) presented two workshops at the California Association for
the Education of Young Children‘s annual conference held at the Pasadena Convention Center from April
3-5. The topics presented were Leadership and the Brain and How School Age Children Learn Math. This
conference is the largest professional organization of early learning professionals in the State of
California that meet to learn more about appropriate policies and practices for caregivers and educators
working in PreK to Grade 3 programs.
On April 11, Regina represented Santiago Canyon College at the biannual regional meeting of the
California Community Colleges Early Childhood Educators (ECE) Association held at the Pacific Coast
Highway Campus of Long Beach City College. The progress of development of the new Early Learning
Teaching Credential was discussed, along with addressing the possibility of increasing the licensing
requirements from 12 ECE to 24 ECE units and developing courses for teachers who will need to take
additional child development courses to meet the new requirements for this credential by 2019.
Model United Nations (MUN) Wins at UCLA
SCC students competed in at the LAMUN conference held at
the University of California, Los Angeles, campus, April 3-6,
2014. The event turned out to be one of the premier
collegiate Model UN conferences in the state, providing a
venue for engaging, creative, and innovative debate for
college students from around the world. Narges Rabii
(History/MUN) reported the students competed in DISEC,
GOP, Democratic Committee, Siege of Constantinople
(pictured left), Boxer Rebellion, and the Asteroid Apocalypse.
Two SCC students won awards in the GOP and Constantinople
committees. In May, the MUN team will receive their country
assignment for the national conference hosted in Washington, DC, in fall 2014. Congratulations to the
SCC-MUN Team!

Gang Expert Alex Alonzo Presents to Upward
Bound Math and Science (UBMS) Students
Maggie Cordero (UBMS), welcomed gang expert Alex
Alonzo (pictured right) to an Upward Bound Math
and Science program to talk to students about how
he used education to transform his life, particularly
his geography degree, to become a gang expert and
entrepreneur who has used his expertise to create
the website www.streetgangs.com, write
books/articles, and film documentaries on his
research on gangs. Alex, a native of Bronx, New York,
moved to South, Central Los Angeles when he was a
teen. He talked to the Upward Bound students about
the experience of living in south central near the
University of Southern California (USC) and dreaming
of attending USC. After graduating high school, he
spent four years working minimum wage jobs before
he decided it was time to get an education so that he
could get a better job; jobs he couldn’t even apply for because he did not have a college degree. Alex
applied to USC and was rejected. Rather than giving up, he enrolled at Santa Monica College and
worked hard to make his dream of attending USC a reality. He told the students not to let anyone tell
them they can’t achieve their dreams and to believe in themselves no matter who doesn’t. The
students were very engaged and had many questions for Alex.

Industry Professionals Meet with SCC Water Utility Science Program Water industry representatives in an advisory committee are essential for ensuring a career education program
that is aligned with industry workforce needs. Within the Business and Career Technical Education (BCTE) division,
the Water Utility Science (WUS) department hosted their annual Technical Advisory Committee meeting on Friday,
April 4. Co-chaired by Dennis Cafferty (WUS) and Kari Irwin (BCTE), the advisory group provided valuable input
regarding the college's program. This included explaining the need for enhancing the wastewater and
environmental portions of the program due to the growing demand on those industry segments, the importance
and need for Hot Topic technical courses, as well as underscoring the need for connecting students with local
water organizations for internship opportunities. With participation from Dean Corine Doughty (BCTE),
Daniel Peraza (Counseling), Julie Peeken and Amy Styffe (both BCTE), the committee identified
opportunities to expand and improve the existing program. For more information on the WUS program,

What’s Happening Now?
From Administrative Services
• The T building was fumigated for termites over spring break. Both the cafeteria and Health Center
were able to resume normal service on Monday.
• The required annual test of the fire alarm system was completed at both SCC and OEC. Each pull
box and detector was set off to verify that the fire alarm system is activated. There were a couple
minor problems that need correction including the PA system in the M&O Building.
• The Villa Park Rotary Club held their Thursday morning meeting on campus last week and a tour of
the campus was hosted by Vice President Steve Kawa (Administrative Services). The club has
provided scholarships to SCC students over the past 10 years.
