Welcome

On behalf of the General Committee, It gives me great pleasure to welcome the officials, teams, players and the supporters of our 5th Singapore Cricket Club Soccer Sixes Tournament, which will be held on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May 2013 on the famous Padang.

The 4th SCC Soccer Sixes Tournament last year was a great success and I am convinced that this year’s tournament will be better as far as the quality of soccer is being played. Competition will continue to be fierce and the sixes’ exciting and fast-paced format will definitely keep the spectators on their toes.

As the premier sports club in Singapore, we will continue to support and promote sports in Singapore. The Soccer Sixes will highlight the many talents of Asian football and will be an excellent stage for the young players to progress to higher performances. Youth and Masters teams from Asia and professional teams from the Singapore League and the ASEAN region

will provide a fantastic soccer fiesta on the Padang.

Professional guest star players in the past years have always added flavour to the Tournament. This year the presence of Nigel Winterburn is bound to add on to the quality and star-rating of the Tournament.

The 5th SCC Soccer Sixes Tournament Organising Committee, with their vast experience of organising such tournaments, are to be congratulated for their effort in organising this year’s tournament. A special thank you for their efforts and dedication!

I would also like to make a special mention of the sponsors and advertisers, without whose support the tournament would not have happened.

Let us all join in and soak in the excitement and atmosphere during the weekend and enjoy some excellent soccer.

Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh

President Singapore Cricket Club

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you once again to the Singapore Cricket Club Soccer Sixes tournament. This is the 5th edition of this highly popular annual fixture. If the previous years’ editions are any indication, then this is sure to be an exciting weekend. It is marquee soccer tournament held at the famous Padang that brings to all football lovers high quality soccer action from teams all over Asia and beyond.

This years’ edition held over two days will have three categories - Open, Youth (U-14), and Masters (Over 35). The youth tournament is a new feature that will help encourage and promote our young budding footballers. The Open category will pit the very best teams from Singapore against international teams from all across the region. The Masters category will feature international stars including

EPL players. An exciting fare for all age-groups!

With six-a-side format, this is sure to be a fast-paced thriller. Also with two games happening at the same time, spectators can switch between matches of their liking.

I would also like to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the sponsors, volunteers and the tournament organizing committee for their invaluable support and contribution. This tournament is organized by volunteers and their love for the club and dedication deserves all praise. I would like to invite all members to turn out in numbers to show your support for such efforts and enjoy the memorable weekend. It is events like this that contribute to make SCC the premier sports club in region.Let the ‘goals’ begin.

It has always been a pleasure of mine to welcome all participating teams and spectators, on behalf of the Football Association of Singapore, to the Singapore Cricket Club Soccer 6’s Tournament. The tournament is into its fifth year and it will be held once again at the historic Padang on May 18 and 19.

The Singapore Cricket Club has held several events with the objective of developing the youth soccer talent in Singapore and the Football Association of Singapore has always been a great supporter of this development.

I salute these big-hearted clubs, from the region, for heeding the call of the organiser, to do their part for youth development by doling out non-stop football action. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Singapore Cricket Club for organising this football event and I would also like to wish all participating teams the best of luck and hope that you have an enjoyable and fulfilling weekend, and special thanks to all the fans for doing their part and coming down to cheer the teams on.

On behalf of the Singapore Cricket Club, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2013 SCC Soccer Sixes. This year, we have a strong line up of teams from across Asia with a Main and Masters Competition. We also have a strong emphasis on Youth and the tournament and players from underprivileged homes across the Region

will be exciting. Finally, a big thanks to members of the SCC Soccer Section who have housed the kids this weekend and your efforts are duly noted. I wish you all a successful and enjoyable weekend.

Graham DicksonSCC Soccer Convenor

Following the success of the 4th Singapore Cricket Club Soccer Sixes tournament in June 2012, I am delighted to represent the committee as Chairman for 2013.

This tournament is quickly growing into a marquee sporting event as it continues in its aim to raise the profile and standard of Asian football to a higher level, aided by the introduction of top professional teams from around the globe.

The vision for this tournament is to highlight and expose the many talents of Asian football and its promising young players throughout the region. I am sure Newcastle Jets FC will look to compete for the title along with professional teams such as Chonburi FC (Thailand), Courts Young Lions (Singapore U23’s) and

Geylang International (Singapore) as their main seeded competition.

I give my sincere thanks to all parties that has made this tournament possible from the very kind sponsors for their belief and support, my fellow tournament committee members for all the hard work and time they sacrifice, the General Committee and the committed staff of the Singapore Cricket Club to support the committee along every turn, the volunteers throughout the tournament and lastly to the participants and team representatives.

Finally, a warm welcome to the Singapore Cricket Club to everyone and we wish you a great weekend of competitive football and friendship.

It was three in the morning and having fought fires all day I was half way through my drive from the north-west of England, south to Heathrow for an early morning flight. I’d made good time and could afford a quick stop for coffee and a bacon sandwich.

The mid-April air was brisk to say the least and I jogged from my car to themotorway café to counter the chill. I’d been to this stop several times before and jumped into my usual booth at the end of a vast area with no more than a dozen lorry drivers and the odd crazy, all of whom seemed to know the benefits of a good bacon sandwich.

This was always a good place and time to people watch. I would wonder what it must be like to drive trucks, with nobody’s company but your own, punctuated only by the purveyors of fine pork products. They never seemed to look for company these drivers, so I never thought to engage them.

In the booth alongside me was the archetypal trucker. He hadn’t gone the bacon route but instead was gnawing on a sausage baguette with more-than-ample red sauce dripping from the sides. A nervous-looking man with dark hair and a lavish overcoat entered the door at the far end. Having scanned the space, he made an energetic beeline for my neighbor.

“You are Joe?” he said, in a Spanish-sounding accent.“Yes.”“They told me to look for the blue ribbon.” He pointed to a ribbon sewn into Joe’s baseball cap.“Well you’ve found me. How can I help you.”The foreigner, leaned in from across the table with his hands together, as if praying. “I am in trouble. It is going well but also it is going badly.” “You seem confused.”

The foreigner, who looked even more diminutive in his large overcoat than he otherwise might have, searched for the words. Almost in tears he explained: “Some things go very well.

But it is not enough. Other things – they go very badly. My friends they like me but I also get hatred. The people, they are so good; my people. But the others, they never stop. I cannot stop them.”“These others. What do they have against you?”“It is not easy to say,” said the heavily-coated man, searching the café for the words he needed. “When I do good, the others, they don’t like it. When I do bad, they love it, they love my mistakes. I only try to please everyone. I do my job, I work hard but sometimes it is too much for everyone.”“You have family?” said the trucker before launching into another mouthful of baguette.“Yes, yes. They are the most important. But I love everyone. I treat them as my friend. Sometimes, calling them my friend, even using native language and phrases to show my respect for them is not enough. They turn on me. I am hounded. I wish to stay here for my family but I am almost at the end.”“Could you try leaving for somewhere else? This is not the only place in the world with work.”“There may be something in Germany. But I don’t know the language. And my children, they are happy here. I don’t want to move them. I love them so much and my wife is so loyal to me, through everything I’ve been through. They said you could help, that you know the magic.”

The trucker shuffled uncomfortably in his seat and wiped some sauce from his chin.“You need to show more respect for those around you. Perhaps in a different way.”“Show me how. My language. It is not the best. It doesn’t seem to work. It gets twisted. In my we country touch the head, or kiss the hand of the person we wish to respect. Perhaps I could do this.”“Well, yes. That’s a start.”“They say you are worth the money, that you have the knowledge. How should it be done?”“Yes. Yes. Kiss them.”“Just kiss them? Like in my country? That will be easy.”

by Steve Dawson

“Well, no. Not on the hand.”“Then where, tell me? I need your words.”

The trucker, put down his baguette and quickly drained a mouthful of coffee.“You have the money?”“Yes, it is all here.” The foreigner opened a zipped pouch and showed him the contents. “10,000 pounds. Is it enough?”“Yes. That will do. Give it to me,” replied the trucker, his anxiousness to take the money and leave as soon as possible, evident to me but not it seemed to the foreigner.“When, erm… things are going badly, kiss that person who stands in your way. Kiss them on… the upper arm.”“The upper arm…”“Yes,” he said, tapping his tricep, “And do it enthusiastically. As if you really mean it.”“Ok. Ok. And this will clear my path, yes?”

The trucker got up to leave, his coffee unfinished and his baguette lying dischevelled beside it.“Your path will be cleared. Don’t you worry about that,” said the trucker, hastily picking up a blue scarf from the seat next to where he’d been sitting.“Thank you, thank you so much. I am grateful to you. My family is grateful to you. Please, if there is anything I can do for you or you family. Please look for me, I can be found.”

He stood up eagerly offering his hand in gratitude, but the trucker brushed by him, along the aisle towards the exit.

Again the foreigner clasped his hands, this time in gratitude, desperate only for a way to thank the man who would change his fortune. “My name is Luis. Luis Suarez.”

ProfileNigel Winterburn (born 11 December 1963) is an English former professional footballer and current football television pundit who played as a left back from 1981 to 2003. He is best known for his role alongside the likes of Tony Adams, Steve Bould, Martin Keown and Lee Dixon, forming a celebrated defensive line for Arsenal in the Premier League and European football during the 1990s. He also played in the Premier League for West Ham United and in the Football League for Wimbledon.

The Midlander served the Arsenal Club for 13 years, holding down a permanent spot in ‘The Back Four’ during the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s. His professionalism and appetite for the game commanded the respect of fans throughout his Highbury career. At the age of 36, Winterburn left for West Ham with his desire as strong as ever.

It was testament to the player’s attitude that he sought a club which allowed him to continue plying his trade at the highest level. He duly impressed and earned the right to fight for a starting berth. It was no easy task, replacing a stalwart like Kenny Sansom, yet Nigel met it with distinction.

Nigel was superbly accurate from the byline and had a cute knack of prising open defences with incisive back-to-front passes. On the back-foot the twice-capped Englishman was a fierce tackler and had an engine and tactical nous that ensured opposing forwards rarely stole a yard on him.

Winterburn left north London with a bag full of swag - three league titles, two FA Cups, a League Cup and a European Cup Winners Cup - and he continues currently to work for the Arsenal Club in a broadcasting capacity.

To improve the lives of underprivileged children and children with disabilities in Bali & East Indonesia by using the power of sport and play for development, health and peace.

Winner of the last two editions of the SCC Youth Tournament, Bali Sports Foundation uses the qualifying football tournaments

in Bali to educate young boys in motor traffic safety in an effort to stem the increasing tide of motorcycle fatalities, where unlicensed young Balinese, usually without helmets, are allowed to drive on public roads, which unfortunately has become the leading cause of death and injury in the male 12-17 year age group in Bali .

Bali Sports Foundation (Indonesia)

Our aim is to establish a loving home for orphaned and destitute boys. The boys receive comprehensive education at good local schools. They also enjoy daily coaching and training from fully qualified coaches in the game of football.

The Youth Football Home is built on 8 rai of land in the town of Thalang (about 150 meters from Wat Muang Komaraphat) on Phuket Island consisting of a dormitory home for 32 boys, a residential building for staff and a full size football field plus training areas.

Construction began in October 2005. The dormitory and staff house were built and furnished by the beginning of May, 2006. The football field and the training areas were formed 4 months later.

The first group of 9 boys from Bangkok and the Northern Provinces arrived at our Home on the 11th of May, 2006 and were enrolled at the Thalangwittaya School in time to attend the first day of the new school year. Today we have an almost full house with many of the boys selected from football camps held on our grounds.

Youth Football Home Phuket (Thailand)

As part of its CSR initiative Halcyon Agri Corporation has selected and sponsored 10 children to represent the tiny kampung that houses the workers and families of its rubber processing units in Palembang.

For these children, who rarely leave their own kampong, let alone their own country this will truly be an experience of a lifetime.

Hevea MK FC Palembang (Indonesia)

Inspired by the late Henrik Lorenz, an old and dear friend of SCC, who founded the Youth Football Home in Phuket, the first team to take part in the SCC Soccer 6s Youth Tournament, the club is delighted to continue his legacy by hosting 6 teams in this year’s tournament.

This year sees the return of last year’s winners, Bali Sports Foundation and finalists Phom Penh Crown Club plus the Youth Football Home (Phuket), Hevea MK FC Palembang and Ruah Faith, Malaysia. In addition we are pleased to welcome Klung Toey from Bangkok, Thailand for the first time to SCC Soccer 6s tournament.

Many of these children come from underprivileged backgrounds and many have travelled beyond their own villages, let alone abroad, so it will indeed be the experience of lifetime.

The Organsing Committee extends its sincere thanks to the General Committee of the Club, the Soccer section members and the tournament sponsors plus the families of club members and friends who will be looking after the children during the weekend for their generosity without which none of this would be possible.

Page 13: SCC Soccer 6s

The Klong Toey Football club was started in 2007 in the largest slum community in Bangkok. It has grown to a 6 day per week program and involves over 80 boys from the ages of 7-16 as well as a further 32 young men from the ages of 16-30 years, some of whom are also employed as coaches.

Through the implementation of their football programme, Klung Toey have seen teams play in competitions across Bangkok. For many this is their only chance to get outside of the slum and explore the world.

They see this programme as significantly reducing the use of drugs and alcohol in the lives of many young men and boys. The excitement driven by all this has been amazing and they are

seeing many positive results as community and camaraderie are built among themselves.

Thanks to their sponsor, Inspirasia, Klung Toey is able to compete in Singapore and is a dream come true for them sparking hopes and dreams of new possibilities in the rest of the boys. Inspirasia Foundation was originally established in 2003 as the Annika Linden Foundation, a lasting memorial to the spirit of Annika Linden, who was killed on 12 October 2002 in the terrorist bombing of the Bali nightclub. The man behind it is Annika’s fiancé Mark Weingard who laid the grounds to the foundation as a positive response to this tragedy.

Inspirasia also supports Bali Sports Foundation’s Disabled Sports Games.

The PPCFC Academy was established by the President of the Club, Mr.Rithy Samnang, who decided to set up this academy to try and help develop football in Cambodia and to give the kids an opportunity to develop their potential.

The players were selected from all over Cambodia and now live in Phnom Penh, including some kids from orphanages throughout the country. The kids now live in Phnom Penh, in a purpose built building which includes a

dormitory, study room, recreation room and dining room. Kids now go to a private school and train 6 days per under AFC accredited coaches. They are looked after by three “house mothers” who cook and clean for them.

None of these children have been outside Cambodia before; many of them have never been to Phnom Penh (the Capital city of Cambodia) before. So flying to Singapore will be a huge experience for them.

The match took place on a rain-soaked pitch called Gayfield in Arbroath on 5 September 1885. It was the 1st round of the Scottish Cup. Bon Accord were really a cricket team but had entered the tournament to try their hand at football.Their preparation was poor however, turning up to play in work clothes and without a pair of football boots between them.

The Arbroath team that was about to score the most emphatic win in the history of football and at least for the next 128 years, deserve to have their names enshrined in footballing folklore:Milne, Collie, Salmond, Rennie, Milne, Munro, Tackett, Marshall, Petrie, Crawford, and Robertson lined up in a 2-2-6 formation.

Never before or again would such an attacking formation pay such handsome dividends.

By contrast, Bon Accord were only able to field nine men and had to borrow two spectators. Their half back, Andy Lornie arrived at half time but he had to slot himself between the sticks as the ‘regular’

keeper had to retire injured (no doubt with back ache).

No nets were attached to the goal frames and popular speculation has it that there could have been as many as 40 goals had time not been wasted in retrieving the ball.

From the opening whistle, Petrie bagged a quick couple, before Munroe did the same and Munroe got the side’s fifth. The Arbroath Guide then has us believe that there was a lull in activity, albeit for a short while, as Bon Accord battled hard in the middle of the park. This didn’t amount to much however and before long, Arbroath slipped in another eight goals.

Losing 13-0, Bon Accord had a momentary encounter with the Arbroath backs, but it amounted to nothing and the goalkeeper wasn’t called upon to make a save. Research carried out by Keir Radnedge, the editor of World Soccer, has it that goalkeeper Milne didn’t touch the ball once during the 90 minutes and spent most of the game sheltering beneath a spectator’s umbrella. By half time it was 15-0 and the least they could have done was to give the poor chap a run upfront to

see if he could get on the score sheet.

But Arbroath’s conservative approach was apt, for in the 2nd half, Bon Accord had their only shot on goal. It flew past Milne but was intercepted by Collie.

Reports on the rest of the game are sketchy but it is an accepted fact that John ‘Willie’ Petrie scored 13 goals amid a team performance that the Dundee Courier said, “baffled description.” 19th century journalism standards of journalism seem to have been less than adequate, as undeniably, there seemed plenty to describe.

Arbroath went on to score 55 goals in that season’s Cup competition, before being knocked out in the 4th round by Hibernian.

100 years later, in 1985, this famous game was celebrated by matching the teams once more, to commemorate the opening of a new stadium. In keeping with tradition, Bon Accord borrowed two players from the crowd, Alex McLeish and Willie Miller – but they still lost, this time only 4-0.

by Steve Dawson

Arbroath 36-0 This article has been adapted after its first appearance in the 1998 SCC 7s tournament magazine. Were Bon Accord really that dreadful or were Arbroath a team of 19th century supermen?

Hello visiting players and fans, welcome to the Singapore Cricket Club! We hope you enjoy your visit. Allow us to introduce ourselves here in the Soccer section, it’ll be great to get to know you.

We are overwhelmingly British, around 75 per cent; although a good portion of those choose to describe ourselves as ‘English’. The rest of us are Singaporean with a smattering from other origins although none it seems from Africa or South America.

When asked to describe ourselves in one word, three of us could not. In fact one had to use eleven. Those of us who can count, describe ourselves quite variably: ‘Angry’, ‘complex’, ‘honourable’, ‘charitable’, ‘maverick’, ‘bald’, ‘strident’, ‘open’, ‘awkward’, ‘old’ and ‘intense’. But the word used more than any other was ‘fat’.

Football is our thing. Our most popular team is Manchester United and yet, they are also our most unpopular. Next, we like Arsenal, then Liverpool and finally Spurs. We also have minor love for

Middlesbrough, West Ham and Chelsea.

The best player to ever kick a ball, in our humble opinion, is Lionel Messi. Pele is just behind him in our estimation with Diego Maradona. We also think that George Best, Zinedine Zidane and Johan Cruyff were pretty good. By the way, there was also a vote for Hans van Breukelen.

When it comes to comparing our own footballing abilities and styles to the greats of our time, Roy Keane and Emile Heskey spring to mind more than anyone else. Benny Kitchener, Bruce Grobbelaar, John Pratt and James McFadden also popped up.

While we all love playing football, we like to play other sports as well. Almost half of us list golf as our second favourite, but you’ll find a few tennis players and the odd cyclist.

Look, we’re a sociable bunch, despite hating Man United. We’d like nothing more than to have dinner with our wives, in fact, more so than anyone else who’s ever

eaten. Having said that, Cameron Diaz and Jessica Alba also proved popular. The herd mentality is not among us so our favourite dinner dates are admirably wide and varied. Sir Winston Churchill, Emma Watson, Lionel Messi, Mariah Carey, Steve Dawson, Elvis and “the bird I met 30 years ago in Tenerife,” were also flagged up. “It depends what we’re doing afterwards,” was another understandable response.

At dinner we’d very likely drink beer, but wine goes down well, mainly red. A word to the wise: for a sizeable few, one stout or a crisp gin & tonic and we’re anyone’s.

Having got to know us, we hope that now, perhaps, we can be very good pals. As our first act of friendship we’re happy to share with you our tip for the 2014 World Cup. It’s Brazil. Over a quarter of us think so. We also have confidence in Spain and Argentina. One of us thinks West Germany will win, but in the interests of not leading you astray, the rest of us think they have about as much chance as Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union and Atlantis.
