Jamie McCalmont signs the ticket on the i825,000 Scat Daddycolt on behalf of Coolmore | Arqana
SCAT DADDY IN DEMANDAGAIN IN DEAUVILLE
By Emma Berry
DEAUVILLE, FranceCIt was a case of saving the best until last
as the final offering from a sextet of Scat Daddy juveniles at
Arqana=s Breeze-up Sale (lot 165) brought Eric Hoyeau=s gavel
down at i825,000 in favour of Jamie McCalmont, bidding on
behalf of the Coolmore partners.
Members of the last crop of the late Coolmore stallion have
been in demand throughout the breeze-up season and five of the
six for sale in Deauville changed hands for a total of i2,355,000.
AThis is one of the last opportunities to buy a horse by him,@ said
McCalmont. AHe was an amazing stallion and his son No Nay
Never had another winner today. We couldn=t leave behind a
horse like this and it=s very sad that there will be no more. He
didn=t look like he was breezing very fast but he actually did a
very good time.@
Just as last year, the name Mocklershill featured as the vendor
of the top lot, with Willie Browne having bought the half-brother
to GII Futurity S. runner-up Carried Interest (Henny Hughes)
privately after he failed to sell at $370,000 at Keeneland=s
September Sale.
The 20 breezers sold by Mocklershill at an average of i201,800
accounted for just over i4 million, or more than a quarter of the
day=s turnover of i14,768,000. That figure was up by 14% on last
year but from 19 more horses sold.
Seasoned breeze-up vendors had understandably approached
the sale with a degree of trepidation. After all, i7.2 million had
collectively been spent on assembling the majority of the horses
who comprised what was generally felt to be a strong catalogue,
both on paper and physically.
Trade kicked off on a reasonably upbeat note but as the day
wore on and the rain refused to relent, the mood around the
sales ground turned a little off key throughout a prolonged flat
spell.
Ultimately, the sale=s indicators don=t read too badlyCat
i80,000 the median fell from i82,500 last year and the average
of i130,673 again reflected only a slight drop of 5%.
The clearance rate picked up towards the end of the day as
private sales were agreed on a few individuals and the sale
finished with a flourish, but a significant number of the horses
offered throughout the session failed to match their yearling
price. Cont. p2

The sale-topping Scat Daddy colt (lot 165) | Arqana
THERE IS STILL A MARKET FOR A
QUALITY BREEZER AND I’LL
CERTAINLY BE GOING BACK TO THE
YEARLING SALES TO STOCK UP FOR
NEXT YEAR.Brendan Holland
Arqana Breeze-Up cont.
Brendan Holland, whose Grove Stud enjoyed yet another good
run at Arqana, sounded a note of caution which has been echoed
by a number of his counterparts. He said, AWe=ve had a good day
and we=ve done well here in the past, both in the ring and on the
track. We brought a really good bunch of horses here in a tough
year and we=re very grateful for these results but the overall
situation this season has been exacerbated by the fact that there
have been way too many horses consigned to the breeze-up sales
as a result of overproduction, and I hope that will be redressed.
Those extra numbers make it look worse than it is but there is still
a market there for a quality breezer and I=ll certainly be going
back to the yearling sales to stock up for next year.@
Leading the way from the Grove Stud draft was one of the Scat
Daddy juveniles (lot 140), a colt out of the dual French listed
winner Kaloura (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}), who was unsold at
Fasig-Tipton last August at $195,000, but was one of two
purchases by Tom Ludt and Dermot Farrington on behalf of
Phoenix Thoroughbreds at i700,000.
The duo also bought the first Scat Daddy to be offered, lot 10,
from Gaybrook Lodge Stud. The $160,000 Keeneland September
pinhook was bought this time for i320,000.
Farrington said of the half-brother to listed winner Crimson
China (Giant=s Causeway), AHe=s a nice big horse, and obviously
this is the last chance to buy the progeny of Scat Daddy.@
A new name on the breeze-up consignors= list, Ecurie de la
Frenee, made quite a debut at Arqana, consigning the session=s
second-top lot (144), a son of Frankel (GB), bought by Mark
McStay for i770,000.
Having dipped a toe in the water at Osarus last month, Jennifer
Pardanaud and Ronan Le Dantec, who run a pre-training
operation at Ommeel in Normandy alongside their fledgling
consigning business, brought their first select consignment of
three to Deauville, including the half-brother to GI Garden City S.
winner Backseat Rhythm (El Corredor) on behalf of his breeder
Mitab Abdullah.
The identity of the colt=s new owner was not revealed by
McStay, who signed for the horse under the name Avenue
Bloodstock and said, AHe=s for a new client who asked me to buy
him a special horse. He=s by a special horse who looks like he=s
becoming a very special sire and he=s a half-brother to a Group 1
winner. He may not have been the fastest on the clock but they
don=t have to do a fast time to be a good horse and I found it hard
to fault him. Hopefully we=ll be hearing plenty more about him
next year.@
Among the bold pinhooks that did pay off was another Grove
Stud-consigned colt by More Than Ready, already named Gift,
who will be racing in Hong Kong for an undisclosed owner.

Arqana Breeze-Up cont.
Agent Matt Coleman tucked himself away in the restaurant to
launch his bid for the colt out of the listed winner Generosity
(Unbridled=s Song), who has already produced a stakes winner in
seven-time victor Integrity (Hard Spun).
Coleman=s major rival and eventual underbidder turned out to
be his business partner Anthony Stroud, who had been busy
throughout the session, largely on Godolphin=s behalf. At
i525,000 Stroud cried enough leaving Coleman to sign for the
colt who turned two just a week ago and had cost Brendan
Holland $160,000 at Keeneland in September.
AI thought he was the best horse in the sale. He looks to have a
fantastic action, he breezed well and More Than Ready works
well in Hong Kong,@ Coleman said.
On a horse-by-horse basis, Grove Stud was the most successful
consignor of the day, with seven sold for an average of
i311,000.
For much of the day another member of the same draft, a Sea
The Stars filly out of Ninas Terz (Ger) (Tertullian), had held the
top spot after Jamie McCalmont secured lot 5 for owner Andrew
Rosen at i400,000.
AAndrew raced another Sea The Stars filly called September
Stars, who was a stakes winner in America for Paddy Gallagher,
and this filly is very similar to her. Not only is she a very pretty filly
but she has a lovely pedigree,@ said the agent, who confirmed
that she will be trained by Roger Charlton.
While Ninas TerzCa half-sister to Hong Kong Group 1 winner
Pakistan Star (Ger) (Shamardal)Cwas listed-placed in Germany,
the filly=s second, third and fourth dams are all black-type
winners. Her damsire Tertullian, who is out of a half-sister to Sea
The Stars=s dam Urban Sea, throws up some interesting
inbreeding to Allegretta.
McCalmont added, AShe=s not likely to be running too soon but
she did one of the top 20 times in the breeze which was
impressive considering she=s not a Kodiac-type sprinter.@ Cont. p5

SALES TOPPERSARQANA BREEZE-UP
Arqana Breeze-Up cont.
Kerri Radcliffe bought the top lot at last year=s Arqana
Breeze-up and she played a prominent role again on Saturday,
stepping in with a successful bid of i400,000 for Mocklershill=s
filly by Exchange Rate (lot 111).
AShe=s very fast and hopefully she=ll be going to Royal Ascot,@
said the agent. AShe=s for George Bolton and I hope she=ll be
another Lady Aurelia.@
The filly=s dam Dying To Dance (Street Cry) ran just once but has
already produced a clean sweep of winners with her four runners
to date, including the Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. winner
Encumbered (Violence).
Anthony Stroud made the first big splash of the sale when
signing for lot 2 at i385,000 on behalf of an undisclosed client.
The first foal of Nayara (Fr) (Nayef) had been selected from Book
2 of Tattersalls= October Sale by Longways Stables for
100,000gns.
Mick Murphy and Sarah O=Connell of Longways had previously
enjoyed success with a Siyouni colt at the breeze-ups when selling
subsequent G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains runner-up and G3 Jersey
S. winner Le Brivido (Fr) for i105,000 at this same auction two
years ago. The pair sold seven horses this time around for an
average of i128,286.
Walk In The Sun, the top price at last year=s sale at i1.4 million
and bought originally at Keeneland for $15,000, had been a
sensational pinhook for Willie Browne, and his Mocklershill draft
was responsible for several profitable returns this time around.
Most notable was the colt by the recently deceased Poet=s Voice
(GB) (lot 18), bought as a yearling from October Book 3 for
42,000gns and sold on to Godolphin for 380,000gns.
AHe breezed very well and he=s from a very good consignor,@
said Anthony Stroud after signing for the colt in company with
David Loder and Richard Frisby. AHe=ll go back to the UK and the
boss will decide where he goes. The fact that his sire isn=t around
any more was a bit of a factor but overall he was just a very nice
horse.@
Another who will eventually race in the Godolphin blue is lot 51,
a Scat Daddy filly out of the listed-placed multiple winner Sure
Route (Ishiguru) who was a decent pinhook for Yeomanstown
Stud. Bought for $125,000 at Keeneland, she was resold for
i360,000.
Mocklershill also consigned the sole juvenile by Motivator (GB)
in the catalogue (lot 53), a i60,000 August yearling from Haras
du Quesnay bought by Alex Elliott. Charlie Gordon-Watson
outlasted Richard Brown in the quest for the colt when going to
i280,000 and later said that the son of listed winner Treasure
(Fr) (Anabaa) will be trained in Newmarket by Charlie Fellowes for
an unnamed British owner.
Al Shaqab Racing has been conspicuous by its relative inactivity
so far this breeze-up season but Sheikh Joaan=s operation
returned to the buyers= bench at Arqana and snared five juveniles
for a total of i785,000. The collection included lot 40, a Lope De
Vega colt out of the G2 Prix d=Aumale runner-up Single (Fr)
(Singspiel {Ire}) offered by Star Bloodstock and sold for
i300,000Cdouble the price he fetched when bought at Arqana
last August.

13 c, Super SaverBPeggy Jane 120,000
Longways Stables picked up this son of the stakes-placed Peggy
Jane (Kafwain) for $35,000 at Keeneland September last year,
and enjoyed a solid profit when Rabbah Bloodstock went to
i120,000 to take him home on Saturday.
26 c, Dream AheadBRush (GB) 130,000
Newminster Equine was the name on the ticket when this colt
was sold at Doncaster last August for ,45,000. The bay, who had
previously been a i28,000 foal at Goffs November, did well for
connections on his third trip through the ring on Saturday, being
bought by Blandford Bloodstock for i130,000 from the Star
Bloodstock draft.
108 c, Kingman (GB)BDon=t Forget Faith 180,000
This colt from the first crop of Kingman was unsold at Tattersalls
October Book 1 last year at 110,000gns, after which connections
let him go for 45,000gns when bought by Fir Grove Farm at
Tattersalls December. A mere five months later he turned a
profit for Willie Browne of Mocklershill when secured by the Hong
Kong Jockey Club on Saturday for i180,000.

Greenhills Farm scooped up this colt for i50,000 at Osarus=s
September Yearling Sale, and after finding favour with the Hong
Kong Jockey Club on Saturday, he handed them a smart return.
131 c, Olympic GloryBHortensia (Ity) 160,000
Morten Buskop Bloodstock signed for this first-crop son of
Olympic Glory at i63,000 at Arqana=s August Yearling Sale last
year, and he was another successful pinhook to go the way of the
busy Hong Kong Jockey Club back in the same ring on Saturday.
FLAG FACES POULAINS TEST
ParisLongchamp is unforgiving on those drawn out wide at the
mile start, and despite the employment of the kinder AMoyenne
Piste@ and introduction of an Aopen stretch@ or cutaway rail this
year, post position remains critical in the G1 The Emirates Poule
d=Essai des Poulains. That is bad news for Ballydoyle=s US Navy
Flag (War Front) on Sunday, as Ryan Moore will have to navigate
the outside stall on last year=s European champion juvenile.
Ground is also vital to the G1 Middle Park S. and G1 Dewhurst S.
hero and that has become a controversial issue in recent days,
with some jockeys and trainers openly critical of the state of the
turf here. His ability to stay a mile is also in question, but all that
aside if such Classics were decided on juvenile merit then he has a
comfortable margin to play with as he bids to provide his sire with
a first European Classic. Aidan O=Brien is happy with where he is
at after a 15-lengths fourth of four in Leopardstown=s Listed
Ballylinch Stud 2,000 Guineas Trial S. on heavy ground Apr. 14.
AHe=s a real good-ground horse and he=s a fast horse, obviously,@
he said. AWe wanted to start and get a run into him. The ground
wasn=t ideal, but now going to his next run, we=re delighted we
did get him started.@
Jean-Claude Rouget broke his duck in this with Brametot (Ire)
(Rajsaman {Fr}) when it was staged for the second time on
Deauville=s straight course last year and has received good
fortune here as Olmedo (Fr) (Declaration of War) has drawn
three. Dogged by soft ground since gaining >TDN Rising Star=
status on his emphatic debut over 7 1/2 furlongs at Deauville in
August, Antonio Caro and Gerard Augustin-Normand=s latest
prodigy needs the forecast rain to stay away. Narrowly denied in
Chantilly=s G3 Prix des Chenes in September and G1 Prix Jean-Luc
Lagardere in October, he was second again on his return as
Wootton (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) had the edge in the course-
and-distance G3 Prix de Fontainebleau Apr. 15. The fourth home
there, Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), boosted the form in style
at Chester this week and Rouget was firm in his belief after that
race that the front two are the best of the home-trained colts
heading here. He reiterated that in an interview on Equidia. AHe
has grown up mentally since last year, though he has always been
pretty straightforward,@ he said. AFor me, Olmedo and Wootton
are the two form horses, though I don=t know what order they=ll
finish in.@
Henri-Alex Pantall last enjoyed Classic glory with West Wind
(GB) (Machiavellian) in 2007 and has every chance of bridging
that gap with Godolphin=s unbeaten Wootton, who had won the
Listed Prix Isonomy by five lengths when signing off as a juvenile
at Deauville in October. AWootton is in top order,@ his trainer said
of the game colt, who made all the running in this Classic=s
premier trial last month. AHe worked very well on Tuesday and he
has improved at home since his prep race. I couldn=t be happier
with him. He appears to be at his optimum racing weight.@ He is
drawn next to Olmedo in four, with a possible pace angle to run
at in the British raider Hey Gaman (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) in
two. Last year=s Listed Washington Singer S. winner wears his
heart on his sleeve and was only caught late when runner-up to
Seahenge (Scat Daddy) in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster in
September and when third in Newbury=s G3 Greenham S. on his
return over seven furlongs Apr. 21. Trainer James Tate expects
improvement from the imposing bay. Cont. p7

AHe=s in really good form and he=s improved a lot since his
Greenham third,@ he commented. AObviously a Classic is a tough
ask, but he couldn=t be in better shape. It=s never really crossed
my mind he won=t stay the trip. We did use the Greenham very
much as a trial and he will be 100% for this race.@ Successful by
five lengths in the G3 Prix Djebel at Deauville Apr. 9, Dice Roll (Fr)
(Showcasing {GB}) enters the equation but that was on a straight
track and he has to navigate his way around here from stall eight.
WHERE DID THEY COME FROM? Featuring a sale-topper and a i12,000 vendor buy-back, the
field for the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains has colts bought at all
levels of the market, with only three of the 11 runners never
having passed through a sale ring.
Olmedo (Fr) (Declaration Of War)
Bred by Jean-Pierre Dubois under his Dream With Me Stable
banner, Olmedo could become a first Classic winner not just for
his young sire but also for Arqana's V2 Sale, having been bought
there for i100,000 by Jean-Claude Rouget.
Dice Roll (Fr) (Showcasing {GB})
Giacomo Algranti's G3 Prix Djebel winner is also an Arqana
graduate and was bought by Amanda Skiffington for i130,000 at
the October Sale. He's the fourth foal of the Pulpit mare Schlague
(Fr) and was bred by the Swiss-based Gestut Zur Kuste.
Hey Gaman (GB) (New Approach {Ire})
A vendor buy-back at 100,000gns as a Tattersalls October Book
1 yearling and subsequently withdrawn from the Craven
Breeze-up last year, the Rabbah Bloodstock homebred is the first
foal of the stakes-placed Arsaadi (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who died
the year after he was born. The mare's second and final foal, also
by New Approach, was bought by Godolphin for 240,000gns last
October.
U S Navy Flag (War Front)
Bred, like his dam Misty For Me (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), by Coolmore
associates, the brother of treble Group 1 winner Roly Poly is a
grandson of Butterfly Cove, a Storm Cat half-sister to Fasliyev
(Nureyev).
Infernal Majesty (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr})
Another Arqana October Sale graduate, Infernal Majesty was
bought for i55,000 for owner Jean-Louis Bouchard by Gerard
Larrieu. He was bred in partnership by Antoinette Tamagni and
Cocheese Bloodstock, who bought his Niarchos-bred dam Healing
Dream (Fr) (Montjeu {Ire}) as a yearling for i17,000.
Louis d'Or (Fr) (Intello {Ger})
Bought by his trainer Tony Castanheira for i27,000 at the
Arqana October Sale, this Wildenstein-bred colt is out of a sister
to the G1 Gran Premio di Milano winner Sudan (Ire) (Peintre
Celebre).
Magic Bibou (Fr) (Panis)
Bred by Sebastien, Stephane and Romuald Joucla in partnership
with Eric Dupont, Magic Bibou races in the colours of Francis
Teboul's Gemini Stud, which also campaigned the multiple Grade
1-winning hurdler Gemix (Fr), who now stands at Haras de Victot.
Teboul was also the co-breeder of G2 Prix du Muguet winner
Jimmy Two Times (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}). His dam Hidden Magic
was bought as a 2-year-old for i12,000 at Arqana's December
Sale in 2007.
Wootton (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB})
Guido Sels of Ecurie Haras de Quetieville, which raced the colt
for his first start until Godolphin bought him privately, bred both
Wootton and his dam, the Group 3-placed winner American Nizzy
(Fr) American Post (GB). Quetieville was also the birthplace of G2
Lonsdale Cup winner and G1 Melbourne Cup runner-up Max
Dynamite (Fr).
Il Primo Sole (GB) (Raven's Pass)
A graduate of three sales at three different auction houses, the
dual winner was sold by his breeder Biddestone Stud as a foal for
20,000gns. He then returned to the ring for the Tattersalls
Ireland September Yearling Sale, at which Mags O'Toole bid
i40,000 for him on behalf of Eddie O'Leary who breezed him at
Goffs UK where he was bought for ,55,000 by Blandford
Bloodstock. Biddestone also bred his dam Sweet Alabama (GB)
(Johannesburg), having bought grandam Alybgood through Hugo
Merry for $18,000 at Keeneland in 2009. Cont. p8

MUSIS AMICA TAKES AIM AT THE
POULICHES Unlike the colts= Classic, the G1 The Emirates Poule d=Essai des
Pouliches has fallen to wide-drawn fillies more often with three of
the last six winners when it was staged at ParisLongchamp
defying double-figure stalls. That bodes well for Godolphin=s
burgeoning prospect Musis Amica (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}),
who is unbeaten and comes into Sunday=s renewal off an
impressive display in the G3 Prix de la Grotte here Apr. 15. The
highly-regarded fellow Andre Fabre-trained Wind Chimes (GB)
(Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was back in fifth on that occasion and her
draw in 10 should not inconvenience her as a hold-up filly. AShe
comes into the race in great form,@ Fabre said. AShe is a
progressive filly, who handles the track well. She lacks a bit of
experience compared to some of the others, but she should give
a good account of herself.@
Drawn one inside is the Wertheimers= Polydream (Ire) (Oasis
Dream {GB}), who beat Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in Deauville=s G3
Prix du Calvados over seven furlongs in August but who is making
her seasonal bow in a tough race to win first time up. Her last
start saw her split Wild Illusion (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Mission
Impassible (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) when second in the G1 Prix Marcel
Boussac at Chantilly in October and it was notable that trainer
Freddy Head was disappointed afterwards. AShe had a minor
hold-up and, with such bad weather this spring, it hasn=t been
possible to get a run into her,@ he told the Racing Post. AI=m very
happy with her and the better the ground, the better for her.@
White Birch Farm and The Allen Stable=s Barkaa (Fr) (Siyouni
{Fr}) has to be considered based on her latest four-length success
in the nine-furlong G3 Prix Vanteaux here Apr. 8, while
Jean-Claude Rouget=s representative must be considered having
saddled four of the last nine winners. Mohamed Fahad
Al-Attiyah=s Mission Impassible (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has something
to find on her third in the Marcel Boussac and return sixth in the
Prix de a Grotte, but a strong gallop will bring her into play. AIn
the Grotte the ground was heavy and she was drawn wide, so she
had it to do,@ Rouget told the Post. AShe=s progressed well since
her comeback. She wouldn=t want too much rain.@ Ballydoyle rely
on the clear-cut Dundalk maiden scorer Could It Be Love (War
Front) and Aidan O=Brien said, AShe is a half-sister to Uncle Mo.
She won nicely so hopefully the ground is nice.@ If she stays a mile,
Ahmed Mouknass and Teruya Yoshida=s Coeur de Beaute (Fr)
(Dabirsim {Fr}) holds claims and she looked to benefit from a step
up to seven furlongs when landing the G3 Prix Imprudence at
Deauville Apr. 9.
WHERE DID THEY COME FROM? We look at the origins of the G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches
lineup; they span the whole range from homebreds to foal to
yearling pinhooks and breeze-up buys.
COEUR DE BEAUTE (FR) (Dabirsim {Fr}) was a i30,000 graduate
of Osarus=s September Yearling Sale. The dual black-type winner
is the first stakes winner for her unplaced dam, but bigger riches
are present further back on the page, her second dam being a
sister to those good producers Listen (Ire) and Sequoyah (Ire). It is
therefore the family of Henrythenavigator, Magician (Ire) and
Cliffs of Moher (Ire). B-Haras De Grandcamp Earl.

TEPPAL (FR) (Camacho {GB}) was picked up by Con Marnane from
Arqana=s v2 Yearling Sale for i60,000 from the Ellon

for i105,000 when bought by Blandford Bloodstock. George
Strawbridge=s recent standout filly We Are (Ire) (Dansili {GB})
appears under the third dam. B-Gestut Zur Kuste Ag.
MISSION IMPASSIBLE (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is the first foal out of
the G1 Nunthorpe S. winner Margot Did (Ire) (Exceed and Excel
{Aus}) and as a stakes winner and Group 1-placed already, has
paved a promising path for the yearling full-sister that follows
her. B-Premier Bloodstock.
MOISSON PRECOCE (GB) (Lawman {Fr}) was a 40,000gns buy
from Book 2 at Tattersalls October. She is closely related to the
top-class sprinter Signs Of Blessing (Ire), who is a son of Lawman=s
sire Invincible Spirit and who appears under her second dam. B-

WIND CHIMES (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was signed for by
Broadhurst Agency for i130,000 at Arqana August. The listed-
winning 2-year-old is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Golden
Fastnet (Fr) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). B-Ecurie Des Monceaux.
RED LINE (FR) (Sageburg {Ire}) races as a homebred for breeder
Jean-Pierre-Joseph Dubois.
ELLTHEA (IRE) (Kodiac {GB}) was selected by Mark Gittins at the
Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale for i88,000 from the
Ballybin Stud consignment. She is out of the triple group winner
Tropical Lady (Ire) (Sri Pekan). B-George Kent.
MUSIS AMICA (IRE) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) is a homebred for
Godolphin. She is a descendant of the GI Alabama, GI Kentucky
Oaks and GI Delaware Oaks winner White Star Line (Northern
Dancer), that $3-million mare being her second dam, and she is
the second stakes winner produced by White Star (Ire) (Darshaan
{GB}) following Harland (GB) (Halling).
ZONZA (FR) (Alex The Winner) was raced by co-breeder Jean-
Pierre-Joseph Dubois on debut, after which Alain Jathiere bought
her privately. Jathiere was joined in the ownership by Martin
Schwartz and Gerard Augustin-Normand after the filly extended
her record to three-for-three, and she now races for Schwartz
and Jathiere. B-H Rousseau & J-P Dubois.
COULD IT BE LOVE (War Front) with withdrawn from Keeneland
September, and the half-sister to the champion 2-year-old and
prolific young sire Uncle Mo now races in the colours of Magnier,
Tabor and Smith. She broke her maiden by 6 2 lengths at
Dundalk at fourth asking on Apr. 10. B-Playa Maya Syndicate.
SEA PROSE (FR) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) was selected by Crispin de
Moubray for i115,000 at Arqana=s August Yearling Sale. The
runner-up to Musis Amica in the G3 Prix de la Grotte last month is
from the immediate family of the group-winning siblings Johnny
Barnes (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) and Albisola (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}),
as well as last year=s G1 1000 Guineas third Daban (Ire)
(Acclamation {GB}) and the G1 St. James=s Palace-winning sire
Most Improved (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}). B-Ecurie La Boetie.
CAPLA TEMPTRESS (IRE) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), at i26,000, is the
least expensive of this field to have passed through a sales ring,
having been bought by Jamie Lloyd from Pier House Stud at Goffs
Orby. Capla Temptress was bought privately by Team Valor, likely
for much more, after winning her first two starts, and she
continued her upward trajectory with a win in Woodbine=s GI
Natalma S. last fall. B-Pier House Stud.
POLYDREAM (IRE) (Oasis Dream {GB}) is a homebred for
Wertheimer et Frere and is out of their French listed winner and
U.S. graded placed Polygreen (Fr) (Green Tune), and is the third
stakes horse for the dam.
BARKAA (FR) (Siyouni {Fr}) is a i66,000 graduate of Arqana=s v2
Sale, bought by MAB Agency from Ellon and was therefore from
the same consignment as Teppal. Barkaa, winner of the G3 Prix
Vanteaux on Apr. 8, is a half-sister to three stakes horses. B-

Bye Bye Baby and the winning connections | Racing Post
BABY BLUE Having missed out on the G1 1000 Guineas on Sunday, Bye Bye
Baby (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) offered quick compensation when
winning Saturday=s G3 Plusvital Irish EBF Blue Wind S. at The
Curragh to get on the increasingly-crowded magic bus to Epsom.
This early highlight is in contrast to her 2-year-old profile, when
she was a slow learner who took four starts to get off the mark
but did so at the expense of the classy Altyn Orda (Ire) (Kyllachy
{GB}) by two lengths over seven furlongs at Newmarket in late
September. That day she was ridden positively and it was the
same story again here as Seamie Heffernan set out to make it a
test from the front on the 11-4 second favourite. By the time she
had passed the two pole, the daughter of the promoted 2010
Epsom Oaks runner-up Remember When (Ire) (Danehill Dancer
{Ire}) had the race in safe keeping and her rider, who carried a
pound overweight, was happy to cajole her to the line. She had a
comfortable two-length advantage there over the even-money
favourite Jaega (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who had beaten
Wednesday=s Listed Cheshire Oaks winner Magic Wand (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) convincingly on her debut. AShe=ll go to Epsom
next,@ Aidan O=Brien commented. AShe=s very straightforward,
very uncomplicated and stays well. She=s a very well-bred filly,
too.@
Only eighth when favoured for the Listed Salsabil S. over 10
furlongs Apr. 22, Bye Bye Baby was performing in line with
several of the yard=s runners in recent days in finding more than a
stone on their seasonal debuts. AYou=d be delighted with that and
she came forward lovely from Navan,@ O=Brien added. AOn their
first runs I=m never surprised. Obviously we=ve seen the
improvement can be out of this world sometimes. When they
start off, they start off, and you just want them to progress. The
first day is just the start.@
Pedigree Notes... Bye Bye Baby, whose juvenile campaign also featured a win in
the Listed Staffordstown Stud S. over a mile at Navan and third in
the G3 Killavullan S. at Leopardstown in October, is already one
up on her dam who went to Epsom a maiden and retired that
way. Her sister Wedding Vow (Ire) captured the G2 Kilboy Estate
S. and ran second in the G1 Nassau S., while her brother Beacon
Rock (Ire) was an out-and-out stayer whose career highlight
came when taking the G3 Gallinule S. here. Remember When=s
half-brother, the champion Dylan Thomas (Ire) (Danehill), was
able to garner the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe for the
establishment and is one of two Classic winners out of Lagrion
(Diesis {GB}) alongside Homecoming Queen (Ire) (Holy Roman
Emperor {Ire}), who like this filly took her time to build into a top-
class performer. With the unbeaten G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine
Queen=s Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge) also featuring along with her
GSW descendants Lady of the Desert (Rahy) and Queen Kindly
(GB) (Frankel {GB}), this is rare stock. Remember When=s 2-year-
old colt by Galileo has received a title of gravitas in T.S. Eliot (Ire),
while her yearling is the sixth by that sire.
It is clear that Aidan O=Brien is heading to Surrey with plenty of
angles despite having two valid favourites for each Classic in
Happily (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact
{Jpn}). Perhaps something unprecedented is in the offing. AWe=ll
have to keep going away and see what happens,@ he explained.
AThe lads will decide how many they want to run. If they are
there we=ll let them run. We=ll all learn together, because really
from the trials you don=t know. You don=t know what is a good
trial or an ordinary one, so we=ll let them in there together and
find out together.@ Click for the free Equineline.com catalogue-

TOMYRIS TAKES THE CHARTWELL Nurlan Bizakov=s breeding operation received a fillip on
Saturday when his homebred Tomyris (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire})
came out on top in a competitive renewal of Lingfield=s G3
Betfred ASupports Jack Berry House@ Chartwell Fillies= S. Sent off
at 9-2, last year=s Listed Michael Seely Memorial S. winner was
exposed on the outer with Frankie Dettori content to track the
leading duo throughout the early stages but found plenty when
questioned to wear down the spirited front-runner Lincoln Rocks
(GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) with a furlong remaining en route to
a half-length success. AShe=s worked well all spring and we
thought she was a nice filly last year,@ trainer Roger Varian said.
AThe team at Hesmonds Stud have done a great job with the filly
over the winter. She=s justified the call to keep her in training and
hopefully she can go on to bigger and better things.@
Earning a crack at the G1 Coronation S. following her
breakthrough success in the aforementioned Michael Seely
Memorial over a mile at York=s Dante meeting last May, Tomyris
was sixth behind Winter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in that Royal Ascot
contest before dropping to this trip to run third in the G3 Oak
Tree S. at Glorious Goodwood and G3 Sceptre S. at Doncaster=s St
Leger meeting. Roger Varian is averse to over-facing his charges,
so it was significant that he opted to pitch her back into Group 1
company again in Newmarket=s Sun Chariot in October but
despite meeting early trouble she was never a factor in 11th. This
represented a career-best effort, with the ultra-tough Lincoln
Rocks and the G3 Fred Darling S. runner-up Tajaanus (Ire)
(Arcano {Ire}) solid yardsticks.
Pedigree Notes... Tomyris=s dam, the useful Totally Devoted (Seeking the Gold)
who was fourth in the 2009 G1 Matron S. for Aidan O=Brien, is out
of the Listed Rose Bowl S. winner Crystal Crossing (Ire) (Royal
Academy) who boasts the G1 St Leger hero and G1 Epsom Derby

WHO=S GAME? Leopardstown=s G3 Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial can
sometimes be a victim of its place in the calendar so soon after
Newmarket=s 1000 Guineas, but Sunday=s renewal seems
particularly strong with some Afaces@ from last year and some
unexposed types bidding to check into the Curragh Classic in two
weeks= time.
It=s been a case of so near yet so far since Magical (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) upset Happily (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G2 Debutante S. at
The Curragh in August and it may be significant that she was tried
in blinkers when fourth to Musis Amica (Ire) (Dawn Approach
{Ire}) in ParisLongchamp=s G3 Prix de la Grotte Apr. 15 and now
has cheekpieces fitted. She has to give three pounds to another
of George Strawbridge=s recents acquisitions Who=s Steph (Ire)
(Zoffany {Ire}), who bids to become the first since Carribean
Sunset (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) to complete the double of this
track=s two 1,000 Guineas Trials. Interestingly, that ex-Dermot
Weld trainee beat Magical=s dam Halfway To Heaven (Ire)
(Pivotal {GB}) in the former before the runner-up went on to win
the Irish 1000 itself.

Derrinstown 1000 Guineas Trial cont.
Ger Lyons=s representative was positively-ridden in that
Ballylinch Stud-sponsored seven-furlong contest Apr. 14 and
showed tenacity which will be required again here. AShe=s a
lovely, honest filly who has been training well since the last day
and this looked the obvious race to aim towards as she is able to
line up without a penalty,@ her trainer said. AWe hope she will run
well on Sunday and that race will help us to make a plan going
forward. We=re blessed to have a new owner to have joined the
team and it=s just great to have those colours in the yard.@
Godophin=s Mary Tudor (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) was just
behind Magical on two occasions last year and came back to
break her maiden in the 10-furlong Listed Salsabil S. at Navan
Apr. 22. Trainer Willie McCreery said, AMary Tudor has come out
of her first run of the season really well. Sunday will be on better
ground again and back over the Guineas trip, so it will be a nice
trial for her. I feel the better the ground, the better she will be
and it was just nice to get that win with her as she had some very
good form last year. She is growing and maturing all the time and
she=s getting more relaxed too, so we are looking forward to
Sunday.@
TRIPLE THREAT Ballydoyle experimented with running their horses in familiar
groupings last year and in Leopardstown=s G3 Derrinstown Stud
Derby Trial S. it was a one-two-three with Douglas Macarthur
(Ire) on top of fellow Galileo colts Yucatan (Ire) and Capri (Ire).
This time there is a duo by Coolmore=s resident monarch in >TDN
Rising Stars= The Pentagon (Ire) and Delano Roosevelt (Ire), and
they are joined by a product of Galileo=s best, Frankel (GB), in
Nelson (GB). All three are true Derby colts that have been
heading towards Tesio=s winning post since conception and help
make up an embarrassment of riches in that department for their
stable.
The former is a product of Lagardere/Aga Khan breeding which
Aidan O=Brien has had little access to in the past, but now that
Barronstown Stud have the high-class dam Vadawina (Ire)
(Unfuwain) there is a way in.
The fact that he was able to get so close to Saxon Warrior (Jpn)
(Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Roaring Lion (Kitten=s Joy) in Doncaster=s
G1 Racing Post Trophy in October speaks well of his ability which
he had flaunted earlier in the season. Delano Roosevelt has given
the impression he is a colt building to something big and Wayne
Lordan is back on, which may be significant as he rode him to win
his maiden over a mile here in July. Nelson had his measure last
time in the G3 Ballysax S. over this course and distance Apr. 14
and he has that Frankel willingness to run through a brick wall
allied to an abundance of stamina being out of the stable=s G1
Irish Oaks heroine Moonstone (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}). AAll three
are well and have come on great for their runs,@ O=Brien said.
AThe Pentagon has probably moved up a nice bit [from his nine-
lengths third in the Ballysax]. We=re looking forward to seeing
them run.@
Although tied in with The Pentagon, His Highness The Aga
Khan=s presence is more directly felt here in the Dermot Weld-
trained Hazapour (Ire) (Shamardal), a relative of the 2016 G1
Epsom Derby hero Harzand (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) who was
third when last seen in the nine-furlong G3 Eyrefield S. here in
October.

While all the world looks to Aidan O=Brien to dominate the
upcoming Derby with Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}),
Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and his G3 Derrinstown Stud

who have forced their way into the blue riband picture this week
and one of them is the strikingly impressive Knight To Behold.
John Dunlop=s Arundel stable won this four times, with the most
recent being in 2005 with Kong (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) and it was his

Derby Trial S. cont.
All the focus beforehand was on last year=s Listed Zetland S.
winner Kew Gardens and the market spoke loud and clear that he
was expected to leave the tepid form of his comeback third in the
Listed Feilden S. well behind him. In the event, he was unable to
match Knight To Behold=s pace at any stage with the latter
tanking to the front after the first three furlongs in the hands of
Richard Kingscote who had displayed similar dexterity from a
wide post on Friday=s outstanding Chester winner Kachy (GB)
(Kyllachy {GB}).
By the time the eventual winner came to run downhill to the
home bend, he had a sizeable advantage and Ryan Moore was
expecting and hoping he had gone off too quick and would fold as
he sought to narrow the yawning gap on Kew Gardens. Cornering
with real dexterity, Knight To Behold was given a breather in the
clear and when the Ballydoyle favourite got to withing shouting
distance he was able to extend again and stamp his class on
proceedings. Having taken in the time-honoured Haynes, Hanson
& Clark Conditions S. at Newbury in September, which had played
host to the likes of Henbit, Shergar (GB) and Rainbow Quest, the
bay from the family of the St Leger hero Millenary (GB), a son of
the latter, was an eye-catching runner-up to White Mocha (Lope
de Vega {Ire}) on debut there. His success at Newmarket the
following month was respectable, but gave little indication that
he would produce a performance of this nature on his 3-year-old
bow and his trainer was taken aback.
AThat was very exciting and he=s improved a lot from last year--
he is bred to stay and that is the key factor,@ he said. AHe=s quite
hard to gauge, as he was very babyish last year but was up for it
today. He was a horse that was always going to improve and
we=ve loved him from day one. He is a wonderful mover. The
Derby certainly is an option and I know Neil Jones is keen on Royal
Ascot as well. The way he won here, he has to have a go at the
Derby--he quickened away and should improve quite a lot for this,
as we=ve had niggly little things go wrong with him and the team
have done a great job.@
Knight To Behold, a play on words like that used for his sire, has
all the credentials required for the blue riband. He is the third
black-type winner for the unraced Angel of the Gwaun alongside
the G3 Blue Wind S. winner Beauty O=Gwaun and the G3
Diamond H. winner Cosmo Meadow (Ire) (King=s Best). The dam is
a half-sister to the aforementioned Millenary, an 11-times
pattern-race winning stalwart of Arundel and his G3 Princess
Royal S.-winning full-sister Head In the Clouds (Ire). The latter in
turn produced the Listed Vintage Crop S. winner and G1 Irish
Oaks runner-up Roses For the Lady (Ire) from matings with
Sadler=s Wells, wile the third dam Dancing Shadow is kin to the
G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Sun Princess (GB) and the G1 Coronation
Cup hero Saddlers= Hall (Ire) and boasts the G1 Irish Oaks heroine
Petrushka (Ire) (Unfuwain), the dual GI Breeders= Cup Turf hero
Conduit (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) and the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas
winner Spectrum (Ire) (Rainbow Quest) among her own
descendants. Ballerina=s Let the Lion Roar (GB) (Sadler=s Wells)
was the closest this family came to winning the Epsom Derby,
beaten under two lengths into third in the 2004 renewal. Angel
of the Gwaun also has a yearling colt by Dark Angel (Ire) named
Angel On High (Ire).
Dunlop was left pondering a trip to the Derby with a real
contender of his own for one of British racing=s great racing
families. AI was there when Erhaab won for dad and I was only
two when Shirley Heights won,@ he added. ASeeing Ed win the
Oaks with Ouija Board, it is just an incredible place. It is amazing
and I=ve got to pinch myself. We could take him to the ABreakfast
With the Stars@. I will talk to the owner.@
Another with links to a former Leger winner was the
third-placed Corelli, a half-brother to Lucarno (Dynaformer), who
is likely to skip Epsom and build up steadily to the Doncaster
Classic according to trainer John Gosden. AWe will just take our
time with him, as I see him more as a Leger type,@ he said. AHe
ran a nice race, but is more a horse for the second half of the
year. I will just wait for something like the [G3] Bahrain Trophy at
the July Festival. Frankie [Dettori] said he still feels a little bit
weak. He is a tall horse and has not yet filled out.@

Ten years on from when the Clive Cox-trained Miracle Seeker
(GB) (Rainbow Quest) defeated Ralph Beckett=s eventual G1
Epsom Oaks heroine Look Here (GB) (Hernando {Fr}) in this prep,
there was a sense of deja vu as those stables filled the one-two
with similarly unexposed fillies in Perfect Clarity and Cecchini.
Perfect Clarity, who hails from the same Hesmonds Stud dynasty
as Thursday=s Listed Dee S. winner Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel
{GB}), had created a lasting impression when scoring on debut
over an extended mile at Nottingham in August. Cox had
described her as having a Abright future@ afterwards, but she had
ground to make up having missed the rest of the season and
faced a race-fit Ballydoyle rival in the 10-length Cork scorer
Flattering here.
Held up in rear by Adam Kirby, Perfect Clarity navigated the
home turn without difficulty and set about reeling in the
favourite as Cecchini stayed on out wide. Getting to the lead with
1 1/2 furlongs remaining, the bay stayed on to deny that rival as
they stayed on powerfully to the line. AShe was always very nice,@
Cox commented. AWe=ve just brought her along quietly and
everything=s been good. We were pleased to use this as a starting
point. Hopefully she has given us enough confidence to go
forward to Epsom. She is quite chilled at home, but she is quite
busy and she is very strong. We=ve just had to take it a step at a
time and thankfully we=ve a nice filly to go forwards with. With
maturity, I think she could be very special. She=s an exciting filly.@
Also a possible for that June 1 Classic is the runner-up, with
Beckett non-committal at present. AWe will make a decision
nearer the time, but I would be encouraged,@ he said. AIt was her
first time on the turf. She got pushed wide on the straight and
was slightly racing on her own.@
The winner=s dam Clarietta was a useful performer for John
Dunlop, twice finishing placed at listed level before producing the
similarly-talented duo Clarentine and Law Power so it is scarcely
believable that Perfect Clarity could be had for 30,000gns. The
second dam is the G2 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Claxon, who took
an Oaks trial herself in 1999 for Hesmonds Stud but after the
Listed Lupe S. was only able to be fifth to Ramruma (Diesis {GB})
at Epsom. Her daughter Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB})
captured this race by six lengths and was runner-up in the G1
Nassau S. in 2005 before adding the 2007 GIII Hillsborough S. to
her tally for Todd Pletcher. She in turn produced Ballydoyle=s dual
G3 Curragh Cup-winning stayer Ernest Hemingway (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) and the G3 Prix d=Aumale scorer Toulifaut (Ire) (Frankel
{GB}), who sold for i1.9-million at the Arqana Arc Sale in
October. The third dam is Bulaxie (GB) (Bustino {GB}), winner of
the G3 Fred Darling S. and also the Lupe in 1994 before finishing
seventh in Balanchine=s Oaks. Her descendants include Zoffany
(Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and the aforementioned Rostropovich. Next up
from Clarietta is a 2-year-old full-sister to the winner who was led
out unsold at 115,000gns as part of the Castlebridge
Consignment at Tattersalls October.

Building throughout his career to a second-place finish behind
Idaho (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in Royal Ascot=s G2 Hardwicke S. last
June, Barsanti was seen out only once thereafter when second to
Godolphin=s Rare Rhythm (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in York=s Listed
Silver Cup over 14 furlongs in July. Well-supported on this return,
the bay was provided an ideal pace scenario by the aggressive
filly God Given (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and when produced by
Andrea Atzeni to lead approaching the furlong pole kept finding
to hold Hasili=s grandson Mirage Dancer in a thriller. AHe=s very
straightforward. Before the race, we weren't sure about the
pace, but we went a good gallop for the first part of the race and
I was always pretty confident,@ his rider said. AI think he=s a better
horse this year.@
Silver Star, who is also responsible for an as-yet unraced

year-old colt by Camelot (GB), is the second dam of the multiple
GISW champion Close Hatches (First Defence) and her Busanda

Kentucky Oaks. Sold by Juddmonte Farms for just 38,000gns at
the 2011 Tattersalls December Sale, she is a daughter of the G3

Ivor), producer of the G1 Dewhurst S. and G1 Prix de la

Runner-up to Ballet Concerto (GB) (Dansili {GB}) when looking
to be outstayed in the G3 Sovereign S. over a mile at Salisbury in
August, Tabarrak reverted to this trip to annexe Newbury=s Listed
Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Cup S. in September and
ended 2017 with an all-round consistent profile. It was therefore
a surprise to see him finish last of six in the Mar. 24 Listed
Doncaster Mile on his return, but this was more like the usual
effort the Hannon stable have become accustomed to as he
gained a third win at this level alongside last May=s Paradise S. at
Ascot. Settled behind the leading duo early, the bay travelled
smoothly to the fore two out and despite Mubtasim=s game try
was always holding on. The winner is the first foal out of the

from Arthurian Fame (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). AHe did it well and
stays well although he wasn=t in love with that [heavy] ground,@
said trainer Fozzy Stack. AHe=ll probably go for something like the
[May 27 G3] Gallinule [S. back over this strip] or the [June 7
Listed] Nijinsky S. [at Leopardstown]. We=ll see where we=re going
after that. He=s a nice horse and matured a lot over the winter.
He was a big, raw horse last year and we were in two minds
whether we=d run him or not. We gave him time and it has
worked out.@ Kin to a 2-year-old colt by Camelot (GB) and a

ENGLISH ENTERS EVEREST RECKONING English (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}), winner of the G1 All Aged
S. two years ago, hadn=t seen the winner=s enclosure in 14
months, but she righted that wrong in a big way on Saturday
TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 20 OF 21 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 13 MAY, 2018
English winning the Doomben 10,000 | Bronwen Healy
when posting a mild upset in the G1 Doomben 10,000 and setting
herself up as a candidate for the A$13-million The Everest on Oct.
13. Under cover two lengths behind last year=s Everest winner
Redzel (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) turning into the straight, English hit
the front on the inside of Redzel at the furlong pole when put to a
drive by Tim Clark, while Le Romain (Aus) (Hard Spun) swamped
the favourite on his outside. Impending (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus})
came with a late rally to nip Le Romain for second, but the wire
came in time for English. Second favourite In Her Time (Aus)
(Time Thief {Aus}) was never a factor when it mattered and beat
three home.
English had last been seen finishing sixth, beaten almost six
lengths, in the G1 TJ Smith S. on Apr. 7.
AWe came up here very confident that she was feeling well
within herself and we freshened her up after the T J Smith
deliberately to bring her through this carnival,@ Adrian Bott, co-
trainer with Gai Waterhouse, told Racenet. AI thought the races
would really suit her up here. There was a bit of give in the
ground which was probably the key as well. We=ll keep her up
here now, obviously there are races like the BTC Cup, she=s got a
nomination for the Stradbroke and maybe the Tatt=s Tiara back
to the fillies and mares grade. It is all open to her at the moment
and I guess with a win like that you=ve also got to see if we can
keep her in training and look at the race like The Everest again.@
Pedigree Notes... English is the second foal out of the triple group winner Court.
That mare had a few unlucky years post-English for Newhaven
Park, with a dead foal and a barren year, but her next foal, the
subsequently stakes-placed Al Naifa (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice
{Aus}), made up for lost time when garnering a winning bid of
A$1.8-million from Sheikh Khalifa at Inglis Easter last year. Court=s
most recent reported produce is a yearling filly by Snitzel (Aus).

DERBY HAT TRICK FOR WEIR The lightly raced Leicester (Aus) (Wanted {Aus}) has rarely been
far out of it in nine starts, and on Saturday he continued his
ascent with a first Group 1 win in the G1 South Australian Derby.
Leicester broke his maiden at third asking for trainer Darren Weir
on Jan. 31, and assumed favouritism for this off the back of a
score in the G3 Chairmans S. last out two weeks ago. Racing
prominently throughout, the bay gelding hit the lead under a
drive at the 100 metre pole and ran out by 1 1/2 lengths to give
Weir his third straight win in the race.
AWe got some good advice from a few people that told us to try
to get in front of a few and try to have him in the box seat and
that=s what Damian did,@ Weir told Racenet. AHe needed that run
to show that turn of foot. Had he had a tough run, and all that
sort of stuff, I doubt he would have been able to run the trip, but
the way [jockey] Damian [Lane] rode him, it was just absolutely
perfect. He switched him off, got him into the right spot and,
more importantly, he didn=t press the button until the last 200
metres.@
Pedigree Notes... Leicester is the first produce of his dam, who has an as-yet
unraced 2-year-old filly by I Am Invincible (Aus) named Seles (Aus)
and another filly to follow by breeder Yarraman Park=s standout
sire. Her 2017 colt is by I Am Invincible=s studmate Hinchinbrook

TOP PRIZE GOES TO HI HAPPY
Hi Happy (Arg) (Pure Prize), the 2015 Triple Crown winner in
Argentina, justified 9-5 favoritism while earning his first
Northern Hemisphere win at the highest level in Saturday
evening=s GI Man o= War S. at a rain-soaked Belmont Park.
"It was just a perfect trip, exactly what we were hoping for,@
winning trainer Todd Pletcher said. AHe delivered a big
performance. We're very proud of him. We'll see how he
bounces out of it. I suppose the [GI Woodford Reserve]
Manhattan is a possibility."
One Go All Go (Fairbanks) went right to the front here as Hi
Happy tracked him in second through fractions of :23.95 and
:49.50. The pacesetter threatened to get away from them
heading for home, but Hi Happy called on all his stamina to wear
that one down and then held off Sadler=s Joy (Kitten=s Joy) by a
half-length. One Go All Go held third.
AHe was right there in the perfect position,@ winning jockey
Luis Saez said. AWe had a feeling we would be right there, but
everything came so well. When we came to the three-eighths,
he was ready to run. I felt the other horses coming, but he never
gave up. He was always trying, so I just kept going with him and
he finished very strongly."Cont. p3
SATURDAY=S PREAKNESS ROUNDUP Jimmy Barnes, the chief assistant overseeing >TDN Rising Star=
Justify (Scat Daddy)=s training in Kentucky, said Hall of Famer
Bob Baffert is expected to fly to Louisville Sunday evening. The
GI Kentucky Derby winner is scheduled to fly to Baltimore
Wednesday and is expected to land at about 1:30 p.m. Justify
galloped 1 1/2 miles Saturday.
AJustify couldn=t be looking any better,@ Barnes said. AGoing
into Baltimore this next week, I couldn=t be happier with how he
looks.@
Barnes said that the minor foot bruise that surfaced the day
after the Derby, Alooks like it=s completely behind us. Those
things take sometimes 48 hours to resolve themselves, so now
we just march forward to Baltimore.@Cont. p3

A four-time Group 1 winner and Horse of the Year in his native
country, the chestnut made four starts in California for Felipe
Souza before being transferred to the powerful Pletcher barn.
He was third in the GI Gulfstream Park Turf Feb. 10 before
besting One Go All Go by a convincing margin in the GII Pan
American S. back in Hallandale Mar. 31. One Go All Go had
annexed the GII Elkhorn S. at Keeneland in the interim.
Pedigree Notes:
Hi Happy is a full-brother to a pair of South American Group 1
winners in Hinz (Arg) and Hispanidad (Arg). The latter, born in
2013, is the most recent produce for their dam. Historia was the
2015 Broodmare of the Year in Argentina. Hi Happy=s second
dam Honoris Causa is a half-sister to Fit to Lead (Fit to Fight), a
graded winner on these shores at Churchill Downs, Santa Anita
and Hollywood Park and runner-up in the 1993 GI Hollywood
Oaks.

Saturday=s Preakness News cont. from p1$ Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who like Baffert has won
the GI Preakness S. six times, is scheduled to run Derby sixth-
place finisher Bravazo (Awesome Again) and >TDN Rising Star=
Sporting Chance (Tiznow) in the second jewel of the Triple
Crown.
AI think [Justify] has a great chance [to win the Triple Crown]; I
wish I had him,@ Lukas said. AThere=s no horse out there right
now that can stop him on this run. Ironically, we=ll have two
Triple Crown winners in a short period of time. I really think it
could happen.
ABut you can=t concede anything. My job is to spoil the dream.
That=s what I get paid for. I=m a good friend of Bob Baffert=s, but

$ Tenfold (Curlin), fifth in the GI Arkansas Derby Apr. 14, has

for Tenfold=s two victories, regains the mount. AIt=s a big step up,
but it=s a good opportunity to see where you fit with these

Blended Citizen, stuck on the outside looking in for the GI
Kentucky Derby, proved worth the wait in Saturday=s GIII Peter
Pan S. at Belmont.
He was placed in a perfect spot in fifth as four of them lined up
through an opening quarter in :23.92 and a half-mile in :47.07.
The bay was ridden along on the far turn and set his sights on
the leaders while four wide. He came with a sustained rally on
the outside in the stretch to punch his ticket to the the third leg
of the Triple Crown.
Blended Citizen, third in the El Camino Real Derby at Golden
Gate Feb. 17 and winner of the GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway
Mar. 17, entered off a troubled fifth in the GII Toyota Blue Grass
S. at Keeneland Apr. 7.
"We led him over here with a lot of confidence,@ Jack
Sisterson, assistant to winning trainer Doug O'Neill, said. AHe's
such a big horse with such a big stride. We thought if he's going
to love any track in America, it's going to be Belmont Park, so we
weren't surprised with the result today. After the Blue Grass,
the plan was the Peter Pan, then the [GI] Belmont [S].@

Kirby=s Penny was claimed back by these connections for
$40,000 after losing her for $20,000 in a 12-day span in a pair of
winning efforts at Keeneland last spring. She paired up wins
again at Saratoga, July 29 and Sept. 3, and, following a second-
place finish in an optional-claimer at Keeneland Oct. 21,
resurfaced with a sharp win in a $62,500 optional-claimer with a
career-high 90 Beyer Speed Figure in Lexington Apr. 6.
AThose guys made a nice profit with a win and a claim, but it all
turned out for Mr. [Kent] Spellman, who put up all the money to
initially buy her as a yearling,@ Ward said. "I'll probably bring her
back to Kentucky and freshen her up off of a big race here today
and get her back some time in Saratoga, in one of the bigger
races there. Ultimately, what we'll try to do is try to get her in
the [GI Breeders' Cup] Filly & Mare Sprint in the fall at Churchill.@
Pedigree Notes:
Kirby=s Penny, the 41st black-type winner and 17th graded for
Macho Uno, is the first foal from Spirit Seeker, a multiple stakes-
placed 10-time winner. She brought $37,000 from Hidden
Springs Farm while carrying Kirby=s Penny at the 2012 KEENOV
sale. Spirit Seeker is also represented by an Into Mischief colt of
2017 and an Orb filly of this year.

at Belmont Park Saturday. The gray mare chased Team of Teams
(Elusive Quality) down the backstretch through an opening
quarter in :25.62 and settled into third through a half in :49.87.
The pacesetter looked to sneak away from the field in upper
stretch, but A Raving Beauty inhaled that foe and bound away.
AShe broke a lot better than I thought she would,@ admitted
winning trainer Chad Brown. AShe=s been training extremely
well, and was a lot more forwardly placed than I anticipated. I
thought Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] did a really good job to cover up. He had
a choice there at the first eighth to maybe put her outside the
other speed horse to see if he could settle her that way or cover
up, but I think if he chose to put her outside she might have run
off, so I think he really won the race by choosing to cover up and
then she did settle down.
Brown continued, AI know this horse has a good turn of foot in
the morning, and if she=s already placed ahead of some of the
other good horses in the race, I had a feeling she=d outkick them
from that position.@

Kanthaka already boasted two wins from as many tries over
this track and trip, and the cutback proved just what he needed
to return to winning ways. Fifth on debut at Del Mar in
November, the chestnut donned cap and gown here on the day
after Christmas. He returned for the GII San Vicente S. Feb. 10,
and belied 11-1 odds when making a head-turning move from
off the pace to score by open lengths. Stretched out for the GII
San Felipe S. Mar. 10, he was a well-beaten third behind the
formidable pair of McKinzie (Street Sense) and Bolt d=Oro
(Medaglia d=Oro), and had last been seen finishing sixth behind
GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Good Magic (Curlin) going two

backed McKale (Congrats) showed the way through an opening
quarter in :23.05. The pacesetter took pressure from several
rivals as they passed the half in :45.53, and Kanthaka clearly had
some run in him but nowhere yet to do it. The seas parted in
upper stretch, however, and Kanthaka burst through the seam
and kept on to notch the decision from a pesky Beautiful Shot.
AI had a good trip,@ winning rider Flavien Prat said. AI waited to
make my move when I wanted, it opened up perfectly and after
that, he did a brilliant job... Once he got the lead, he kind of
looked around. He made that nice move and for about half a
length he looked around, but that was it.@
Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer added, AI thought
Flavien put the horse right up in there where he had a chance to
get trapped and not get out, but he was counting on getting a
seam and he did get the seam and went through it right away.
When he saw the opening, he went right through, so I was really
proud of him and the rider. I think he has the potential to run
longer distances, but there are seven-furlong races that fit him
really good.@
Pedigree Notes:
The winner=s unraced dam was just a $4,000 yearling and
$5,000 2-year-old purchase, and failed to make it to the races.
Kanthaka is her first foal, and she produced another Jimmy
Creed colt in 2016. That one was a $150,000 KEESEP yearling
who blossomed into a $400,000 OBSMAR 2-year-old purchase

Claimed for just $25,000 out of a winning effort sprinting at
Oaklawn Park Mar. 3, Matrooh tried a synthetic track for the
first time in his career in Saturday=s GIII Hanshin Cup S. and
rallied from last to give both jockey Santo Sanjur and trainer
Cipriano Contreras their respective first graded stakes victories.
Content to drop out to trail behind a solid early gallop,
Matrooh was quietly handled into the turn and was steered out
into the clear while gaining ground approaching the quarter
pole. Spun wide into the lane, the well-bred, lightly raced bay
kicked nicely, gained stealthily on pacesetting Goneghost with a
furlong to travel and raced by en route to an ultimately
comfortable success.
Winner of the 2015 GIII Bold Ruler H. and a near-miss third to
Tonalist (Tapit) in that year=s GI Cigar Mile H. while under the
care of Chad Brown, Matrooh was turned over to Danny Peitz
last summer, but dropped his first six races for that new outfit
before being haltered for $25,000 a little more than two months
ago. Sanjur was in the irons for the first time when proving a
neck best in a sloppy optional claimer in Hot Springs Apr. 6.

MACHTREE SEEKS REDEMPTION IN MARINE Machtree (Kitten=s Joy) crossed the wire first in Woodbine=s
Wando S. Apr. 21, but was disqualified and placed fifth for
interference in the stretch and he looks to rebound Sunday in
the track-and-trip GIII Marine S. Prior to the Wando, the Mark
Casse pupil had been campaigned on grass, winning a
Gulfstream optional claimer Dec. 23 and finishing sixth in the
GIII Dania Beach S. Feb. 3. Inge (Victor=s Cry), who inherited the
win in the Wando, reappears in this spot, as does Tale of Vienna
(Tale of Ekati), who crossed the wire third, but was disqualified
to fourth.
The morning-line nod goes to Archaggelos (Temple City),
winner of the course-and-distance GIII Grey S. last term. The bay
was last seen finishing a neck second in Aqueduct=s grassy
Woodhaven S. Apr. 21. Also worth a look is Rose=s Vision (Artie
Schiller), who enters off a pair of turf wins, most recently
capturing a Keeneland allowance Apr. 12.
JOCKEYS DELAY START OF SATURDAY=S
BELMONT CARD Saturday=s Belmont Park card, headed by the GI Man o= War S.,
was delayed by more than 30 minutes after jockeys called for a
last-minute meeting with track management. The Jockey=s Guild
and the New York Racing Association have been working
without a contract since Jan. 1. AThere are lot of issues
involved,@ Hall of Fame rider and Chairman of the Jockeys= Guild
John Velazquez told Daily Racing Form. AWe don=t have a
contract. Obviously, with not having the contract and those
issues not being resolved, they need to be addressed. It was
never a thought of not riding. We=re here to ride, we want to
make sure things get done.@ Scale of weights and health and
safety are among the issues being discussed.
EMERALD DOWNS TRAINERS STILL WINNING IN THEIR 90S
AFor Arturo Arboleda, 94, and H.R. APat@ Mullens, 91, it=s the

plans and keeping close eyes on their horses. It=s their passion

YAVAPAI DOWNS GETS UNANIMOUS APPROVAL
TO MOVE FORWARD Yavapai Downs took another important step toward bringing
summertime horse racing back to Arizona as the Arizona Racing
Commission unanimously approved a three-year temporary
permit for the track=s new ownership group. Plans call for live
racing to begin at Yavapai Downs in 2019, running from
Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Yavapai Downs last
conducted racing in 2010. The track was purchased out of
federal bankruptcy court for $3.22 million by J&J Equine
Enterprises LLC, an entity formed by brothers and
Phoenix-based JACOR Partners principals Tom, Dave and Mike
Auther and their partner Joe Jackson, along with longtime racing
executive Corey Johnsen.
CANTERBURY WILL HOST RACING FESTIVAL IN
CONJUNCTION WITH JOCKEYS AND JEANS The inaugural Mystic Lake Northern Stars Racing Festival,
which includes five stakes races worth a total $500,000, will be
joined by the Jockeys and Jeans fifth annual fundraiser to
benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. Both events are
set for Saturday, June 23. At least 15 Hall of Fame riders are
expected to be on hand to honor six of their fallen comrades.
ACombining Canterbury=s richest races with Jockeys and Jeans
makes for a great evening of racing that will draw attention both
locally and nationally,@ said track president Randy Sampson.
Since its founding in 2014 by five former jockeys, the
all-volunteer group has raised nearly $750,000 for the PDJF. The
PDJF makes monthly payments of $1,000 to 63 severely injured
former jockeys, including some 40 who are pari or quadriplegics.
The group hopes to go over the $1-million mark this year.

The GI Calvin Houghland Iroquois pitted youth against
experience. On a sweltering Saturday afternoon in Nashville,
youth won out. Zanjabeel (GB) (Aussie Rules) marked himself as
a star of today and tomorrow when the 5-year-old swept past
perennial runner-up Modem (GB) (Motivator {GB}) and pulled
away steadily to the wire to win by five lengths. Jamarjo (Ire)
(Marju {Ire}) finished third, and Mr. Hot Stuff (Tiznow) was
fourth.
The Iroquois, the richest race on the National Steeplechase
Association's spring schedule, attracted the top four finishers in
last fall's GI Grand National, in which Mr. Hot Stuff nosed out
Modem, who was a nose ahead of All the Way Jose (Senor
Swinger). Jamarjo was fourth.
Zanjabeel also had run on the Grand National card, and he
easily won the Foxbrook Champion Hurdle for novices-jump
racing's newcomers-for Irish trainer Gordon Elliott. A Maryland
partnership of George Mahoney Jr.'s Rosbrian Farm and Wendy
and Ben Griswold bought Zanjabeel, then four, and turned him
over to Ricky Hendriks, who won another novice stakes with him
two weeks later.
Hendriks did not hesitate to send Zanjabeel into top company
this year, and he registered two second-place finishes, in the
GI Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup and the GII Temple
Gwathmey earlier in the spring.
The Iroquois was time for him to graduate into top company if
he could handle three miles, the longest hurdle stakes on the
schedule. He handled it with aplomb and was where jockey Ross
Geraghty needed him to be at every stage of the Iroquois.
After All the Way Jose fell on the second run down the
backstretch, Modem inherited the lead and appeared to be
ready to break his run of four second-place finishes in Grade I
races coming into the Iroquois.
But Zanjabeel had other ideas. He and Geraghty crept closer to
the lead and challenged two fences from home. Both jumped
the final fences well, but Zanjabeel showed off his staying power
when he quickly seized the lead after the last and drew away to
the wire. Now a Grade I winner over fences, Zanjabeel ran the
Iroquois' three miles in 5:36.40 on firm turf. --Don Clippinger

VOODOO SONG (c, 4, English Channel--Mystic Chant {SW}, by

beaten at the head of the lane as lightly raced, but heavily
