From the Pastor’s Desk This past Monday, I read the newspapers discussing the sermons this past Sunday dealing with the Pennsylvania report. My friend, who is a priest in Iowa, chastised me for not discussing this terribly sensitive manner in my homily or from the pulpit. I had a sense that perhaps it wasn’t necessary as you, like me, have been watching the news or reading the papers or even the awful report itself. So, I thought to stay focused on the Scriptural readings. However, I apologize if any of you returned home last Sunday and was bothered that I didn’t speak about this terrible matter. Families are supposed to be able to talk about difficult things. I really have no brilliant thing to add in terms of assessment or analysis. In fact, like many of you, I was at a loss for words. I think His Eminence, Cardinal Dolan wrote a very helpful OpEd piece in the NY Daily News. You might care to check it out. It was on August 17, 2018. A number of years ago, when the news from the Boston abuse debacle was making its way around the world, I was at St. Joseph’s Seminary as a professor. Somehow a phone call was pushed through to my room from a local news station. I was caught off guard when I was asked directly about the impact of clergy abuse of minors and how as one involved in formation of seminarians did I absorb this news and how did I share it with the seminarians. I didn’t really think about a response, but here is what I said in a quick reply: “You know, many people don’t realize that priests have extended families and that the majority of us are uncles to nieces and nephews who we love as our very own. I am convinced that most of us, if not, all of us priests would rather lay down across train tracks before an oncoming train before we ever let anyone ever harm our nieces and nephews. Abusing children is loathsome and horrific to us.” Indeed, I have ten nieces and nephews. I love them so much and I think they kind of like me too! I am sure that I am not the only priest around that when one first hears about these abuses, he then thinks of his nieces and nephews and fills up with such deep pain and sorrow, not to mention embarrassment.

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY AUGUST 26, 2018 If there can be any positive news to share, it is that in the last 25 years or more, the Catholic Church has drastically improved in ensuring a strict safety environment for the protection of minors. Here are a number of such improvements: Background checks for all priests, teachers, parish personnel and any volunteers dealing directly with children; if a priest travels outside the Archdiocese to participate in another diocese, he needs to acquire a letter of suitability from the priest personnel’s office; parish inspections of rectories and churches; full day meetings each year for priests in the Archdiocese to participate in presentations of how we can better protect our children; regular bulletin notifications to invite anyone who has been abused by a member of the clergy to call a specific person from the Archdiocese who will directly help them; and, of course, cooperating completely, totally with police and the district attorney’s office, following the proper protocols from the beginning to the end. So my friends, I find it hard to say much more except that I am so sorry for the way innocent children were violated. I am so sorry that they had to carry and continue to carry those experiences with them all their lives. I am so sorry that those in power opted to protect the reputation of the institution and not the child. I am so sorry that this is our Catholic story now for years to come. Let us pray for all the victims. Let’s strive to make the parish the safest place in the world for all our children.

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY AUGUST 26, 2018 MUSIC AT IHM - The IHM Adult Choir will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, September 4th at 7:30 pm in the choir loft. Rehearsals are usually an hour long, a bit more preparation for holidays/special liturgies. If you have never had any training in music; our rehearsals will prepare you to participate in the

Mass in this very special capacity. If you have the desire to sing and the ability to carry a tune you will have all that is needed to be a part of the wonderful experience of choral singing. The adult choir sings weekly at the 10:30am Mass. Won’t you consider giving the gift of your voice to the Lord? ~The IHM Children’s choir will hold it’s first meeting on Tuesday, October 2nd from 6:30pm to 7 pm in the choir loft. The choir will be open to students in grades 3-8. They will be singing on Sundays at the 9am Mass beginning October 7, 2018 ~Dr. Laurie Adamo _______________________________________________
