Caring for the breast

Breast/nipple care

Some mothers may experience nipple or breast discomfort while breastfeeding. The most common cause is a poor latch.• Signs of sore nipples:• Pain usually begins 1 – 4 days after birth.• Pain may be worse at the start of feedings,

and then improve.• Nipples may appear pinched or misshaped

after feedings.• Nipples may be damaged or bleeding.

Swallowing blood from your nipples will not hurt your baby

Engorgementwhat is engorgement?: is swollen tender breast. It happens during the first week of breastfeeding, when your milk production starts to change from colostrum to milk. How to prevent engorgement• Breastfeed at least 8 times in 24 hours.• Make sure your baby is latched well and

feeding efficiently. You should hear your baby swallowing often.

• Always offer your baby both breasts at each feeding

• Cold compress. If fever develops, use Advil if no allergies.

• Massage your breast to encourage your milk to flow.

• Cold Cabbage leaves

Healthy Eating During Pregnancy

Eating well when you're pregnant helps you to:• Support the growth of your baby• Get the nutrients you and your baby

need• Have more energy• Control your blood sugar• Gain a healthy amount of weight• Have a healthy baby

Ensure you eat from the 5 food groups• Vegetables and legumes/beans.• Fruits• Grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain

and/or high cereal fibre varieties.• Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu,

nuts and seeds and legumes/beans.• Milk, yoghurt cheese and/or alternatives,

mostly reduced fat.
