"Art is long and life is short, and success is very far off Andthus, doubtful of strength to travel so far, -we talk a little about theaim- the aim of art, which, like life itself, is inspiring, difficult-obscured by mists. It is not in the clear logic of a triumphantconclusion; it is not in the unveiling of one of those heartlesssecrets which are called the Laws of Nature. It is not less great, but only more difficult. To compel man entranced by the sight ofdistant goals to glance for a moment at the surrounding vision ofform and color, of sunshine and shadows; to make them pause fora look, for a sigh, for a smile—such is the aim, difficult andwavescent, and reserved only for a very few to achieve.

Dedication Ceremony for the Scarab Club Designation as aNational Historic Place

Fellow club members and guests,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish to welcome you on this festive occasion.

In recognition of the cultural importance of the Scarab Club and of the architecturalsignificance of our club house, The Scarab Club has been placed on the National Registerof Historic Places by the Department of the Interior.

Inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places entitles our building to bear amarker indicating our designation as a registered national historic site.

On this occasion, it seems appropriate to reflect briefly on the distinguished historyof our Club and to recognize the contributions of the many Scarabs who have preceded us.

Our founders were men of vision and high ideals. The fact that we are here todayconfirms that they built wisely and well. This building is testimony to their vision and totheir ability to translate dreams into reality.

Subsequent members over the years have assumed the stewardship of their gift to us.In our nine decades, the Club has seen times of glory and times of despair. In the greatdepression we narrowly escaped foreclosure of our club house. More recently, resoluteefforts restored our club to fiscal solvency.

Our logo - the Scarab - alludes to the ancient Egyptian belief in the scarab as asymbol of regeneration and renewal. It is proudly displayed above our doorway. Similarly, our west wall is emblazoned with the Phoenix, ancient symbol of rebirth and tenacioussurvival. True to our logo and to our name, the Scarab Club not only survives, but prospers.

Inspired by the approach of our club's centennial, in the new millennium, we haveembarked on an ambitious building restoration campaign. We invite you to join in the spiritof stewardship that has characterized Scarabs of each generation, by contributing your time, talent, and resources so that we may enter our second century of providing a home for artistsand the arts, thereby continuing to be a vital force in the cultural life of our city and themetropolitan area.

Each time we pass through the portal of our club, may this marker remind us of ourdistinguished history of our commitment to personal realization through creative effortandlove of the arts, and of our responsibility to pass this legacy on to future generations.

Now, in recognition of the contributions of Scarabs past, and in confirmation of thecommitment of Scarabs present to the future success of our Club, the marker will beunveiled.

J. A. Mitchell, Club Historian

THE SCARAB CLUB BUILDING FUNDBuilt in 1928, the clubhouse of the Scarab Club of Detroit is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Itis considered the best existing example of the Arts and Crafts style of architecture.

Time has taken its toll on our majestic building, particularly the roof. There are tiles missing on both the eastand west sections of the mansard portion of the roof and the flat section needs to be replaced. The buildingcommittee has received estimates for these repairs. The cost to replace the mansard portion is estimated at$13,000.00, which would include patching of the flat portion, the cost to tear off and replace the flat roof isestimated to be $15,000.00, for a total of $29,000.00. A temporary patching job needs to be done until the entireroof can be replaced. We have received an estimate of $4,200.00 for these repairs. The patching portion of thisproject should be completed this month.

The persons and organizations listed below have contributed generously to this project. To these culturallyminded citizens and representatives of these civic minded corporations, we owe a debt of gratitude. A goldenlapel pin will be presented for all donations of $100.00 or more.

The list will be updated and published in "The Buzz,"presented to the board. May we add your name?

until we reach our goal, when a certificate will be
