    Faroe

IslandsVgar and Mykines are the two westernislands. Mykines is said to be theparadise of birds referred to by theseafaring Irish monk, St. Brendan, inthe sixth century. Pufns nest here in

abundance in the summer and there is a large colonyof gannets. Vgar has some fabulous scenery, beautifullakes and is good for hiking and bird watching. Thereare also many links to the Second World War theairport here was founded by the British and there is asmall museum dedicated to the history of the Britishoccupation of the islands.

Streymoy is by far the largest island andis home to the capital city of Trshavn, said to be the smallest capital city in theworld. Torshavn is a pretty town with amaze of narrow cobbled lanes bordered

by grass-roofed cottages, and serves as an ideal touringbase. It is also on Streymoy that you will nd the famousVestmanna bird cliffs on the west coast, idyllic hamletslike Saksun in the north and the impressive historic site ofKirkjubur in the south.

Eysturoy island boasts the tallestmountain in the Faroes at 882 metresand affords breathtaking views. Awonderful island to explore with its tinyvillages and small towns. There is good

hiking to be had here and the northern village of Gjgv, with its sea lled gorge and idyllic scenery is where thecharming Gjaargardur guesthouse is located. An excellentbase for exploring the Northern Islands of Eysturoy andthe Nordoyggjar.

Nordoyggjar is the northern islands ofKalsoy, Kunoy, Bordoy, Vidoy, Svnoyand Fugloy. These are islands of legendsand dramatic vistas. Klaksvik is the maintown of these islands which boast some

of the most dramatic bird cliffs in the world. The highest(the cliffs at Enniberg) at 750 metres are located, in thenorthernmost part of Vidoy. The cliffs are accessible onfoot from the village of Vidareidi and we recommend aguided walk to reach the most dramatic views safely. Ofcourse you can also experience the cliffs by boat fromeither Klaksvik or Hvannasund.

Suduroy, is the southernmost island inthe Faroes and a two hour voyage by alarge car-carrying ferry from Trshavn. The beauty of Suduroy is both pastoraland tempestuous. The entire west

coast is made up of dramatic bird cliffs, while the east ispastoral, green, full of light and interspersed with fjordsand coves. A most beautiful island with spectacular vistas some say the most beautiful island of all!

Other islands - Stra Dmun, Ltla Dmun,Skvoy, Sandoy, Hestur, Koltur andNlsoy. The smaller islands are oftenhard to reach (either by mail boat orhelicopter) and some are uninhabited

but they add to the dramatic scenery as you travel aroundthe Faroes. Each one is distinctive in its own way: Kolturand Stra Dimun have only one family living on them(Koltur is also famous for having Highland cattle) andNlsoy has the worlds largest colony of Storm Petrels.
