Scales Mound School Newsletter
April 2017
Welcome to the Fourth Quarter
The final push of the year has started! The next seven to eight weeks will be the busiest and most important time of our school year. The weather is changing and our softball, baseball, track, and other outside activities will be kicking into high gear. Our students at the elementary, junior high school, and high school level will be taking important state tests. It is an extremely important time for our students to put in their best effort on schoolwork, and as a district, we are beginning plans for the 2018 school year while putting the finishing touches on 2017. Graduation and Promotional Ceremonies are being planned, as is the Senior Awards Night. Soon we will be saying goodbye to our seniors, classmates for the summer break, and teachers. All of this is exciting and a bit scary as we realize that the 2016-‐17 school year is quickly coming to an end.
However, we still have a lot of work to be done. The fourth quarter can be filled with distractions so we have to do our best to help our students stay focused and be successful during this final stretch. It is still important to read with and to our students, help them with projects and spelling words, and be confident that this will be the best quarter of the year. A simple goal is to achieve one letter grade higher this quarter than they did last quarter. If they got an S last quarter, get an S+ this quarter. If they got a B, make it an A this quarter.
As we complete this school year, let’s focus on this quote, “Start by doing what’s necessary, then what’s possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” Make the fourth quarter the time our students are doing the impossible!
Enjoy the beautiful weather!
Go Hornets!

Geography Bee Winner ! Eighth grader Mason Bilderback recently captured first place honors at the Scales Mound Geography Bee on January 13. Mason then continued his competition by taking a state qualifying written test, and his results were sent in to National Geographic. Scales Mound School is proud to announce that Mason did indeed qualify for the state competition by placing among the top 100 students in the State of Illinois. Mason, the son of Cory and Jodi Bilderback, will be traveling with his family to Normal, Illinois on March 31 to compete for the Illinois state title and the chance to travel to Washington D.C. for the National Championships in May. Congratulations, Mason!
5th Grade Math Contest Occasionally throughout the school year, our Regional Office sets up a math contest through an online website called Sumdog. Those of you with elementary or junior high aged students may have heard of it by now. The 5th grade students just participated in one of these contests from January 27 to February 2. Since our ROE set it up, it was exciting to be competing against the 17 other qualifying classes of different grade levels in our area.
Scales Mound 5th graders were given some time during the school day to play the various math games, but had most access to the games at home this time. The contests work by allowing each student who plays 1000 questions to answer. Their goal is to get as many right as possible. Daily winners are posted for schools, as well as individuals. While it wasn’t required, many of the 5th graders worked really hard outside of school and when they had free time during the school day. I think they love to compete! There were a total of 299 students competing and overall they answered 97,723 of 117,217 questions correctly! Not only was the 5th grade class recognized in the top ten schools; we were also the daily winner on January 31! To top it off, we had four students finish in the top ten overall! Those students included Emily Wiederholt in 10th place, Abigail Frank in 9th, Peyton Downing in 4th, and Anniston Werner finished in 1st place answering 982 of her 1000 questions correctly! Great work, Hornets! Mrs. Winter
On Friday, March 17, the HS musicians traveled to East Dubuque to participate in the annual Northwest Upstate Illini Conference Music Festival. The students rehearsed a diverse repertoire of music all day, and then performed in a concert in the evening. This festival is very challenging and musically demanding. Our musicians accepted the challenge and performed superbly! Congratulations, musicians! Mrs. Wilhelm

Dear Parents, Students, Administration and Community Members,
As the concession stand season is coming to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and those who gave their time to volunteer. The profits from the concession stand make up the bulk of the funds that the PTO collects each school year. The PTO was able to support the following programs for the 2016/2017 school year: The purchase of t-‐shirts for every incoming kindergarten student and outgoing senior. Annual junior high ski-‐trip Teacher appreciation luncheon End of school picnic Support of the AR program/store Annual roller skate rental and field trip Donation towards Grease the Musical Post prom donation Tour bus rental for HS History/Government field trip to Chicago Team dress shirts Kevin J Wood/President Lincoln Assembly Mississippi River Museum field trip The PTO also recently purchased a hot dog roller that can cook up to 12 hot dogs at a time! Not quite as good as a campfire but definitely better than boiled hot dogs. We have already doubled our hot dog sales in the short time we have had the machine. The PTO is also looking to upgrade their popcorn machine. If you know of any organization that is looking for a good used popcorn machine, please contact a PTO member. We can’t say thank you enough to all of our faithful volunteers. We would not be able to keep the concession stand operating without you. Working the concession stand is not just for parents of students involved in sports. The proceeds from the concession stand go to fund many school projects that benefit students of all ages and across all interests. Please take a moment to sign up for a shift or two during school registration this summer. Like and follow the SMPTO Facebook page to get notice of volunteer openings and other announcements. Thank you again for all of your support!

Dr. Caron enjoys a hot dog cooked on the new hot dog roller recently purchased by the PTO. He reports that the hot dog tastes great! He looks forward to eating many more next sports season.
On Saturday, March 18, the JH band and choir students traveled to Rockford to participate in Large Group Organizational Music Contest. Both groups performed their best and brought home 2nd place ratings! Congratulations, musicians! Keep up the good work!

Solo and Ensemble Contest
Tyler Allen (HS Music) Tyler has been actively involved and dedicated to being in choir this year. He’s never been in choir before, and he decided to give it a try this year. So far, he has performed in our school Christmas concert, he sang a duet at solo and ensemble contest, and he participated in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference Music Festival. He is always on time to class, he always tries his best, and he is always open-‐minded, and willing to try new things. Your courage to try something new this year is applauded, Tyler! Thank you for sharing your wonderful singing voice with us!
Emma Wentz (JH Band)
Emma is an outstanding example of a dedicated musician. She is actively involved in all of our school music events including pep band, solo and ensemble, festivals, contests, and concerts. Emma does it all, and she does it all with passion and dedication! She is a student that I know I can depend on to learn new and challenging music, and then to help her fellow musicians learn the music, as well. Emma plays the flute, piano, and recently she has been learning to play the clarinet. She continually strives to better herself as a musician by learning new things, accepting new challenges and conquering them, and always giving everything she does her absolute best! Keep doing what
you’re already doing, Emma! Garrett Pickel (JH Choir)
Garrett has worked hard all year long in choir! She has been a brave leader in the soprano section, and she has even helped out the alto section by learning the alto part for one of our songs! She is willing to learn multiple parts according to what the choir needs. Thank you for doing that, Garrett! It is a big help! Garrett is passionate about singing, and she sings with her whole heart! Just look at her face when she sings, she smiles the whole time! She sings in the hallway, at home, while doing the chores, and any chance she can get! She is not afraid to share her voice with the world! She is also a very talented saxophone player in the band! She is musically talented in many ways!
Thank you for being a confident singer, Garrett! I can’t wait to see you continue to learn and grow as a musician! Don’t ever stop singing! Any time, and anywhere! Ari Nottrott (JH Art)
Ari has been selected as artist of the month for April. This is the second time that she has earned this title. Some of the reasons why she was selected are the high quality and neatness of her completed artwork, her level of creativity and originality, her sense of humility, and her openness to seek out and consider constructive feedback for the advancement of her artistic skills. It is clear that Ari loves making art, she is a pleasure to have in class, and I hope to see her in high school art class.
McKenzy Bader (JH Art)
McKenzy has been selected as artist of the month for April. This is the second time that she has earned this title. Some of the reasons why she was selected include her strong desire to create aesthetically pleasing artwork, her ability to elevate the instructional objectives to a level that challenges her, her willingness to help her peers improve their artistic skills and knowledge, and her overall respect for everything and everyone in the art room. She is a model student, always polite and respectful, and I can’t wait to see what she is capable of creating in high school.

Statewide Standardized Testing Beginning on March 28, Scales Mound students in grades 3-8 will be taking the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test. On April 5, the high school students will also be involved in testing, as the junior class will be taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) while the freshmen and sophomore classes take a practice SAT test to help prepare them for this mandatory statewide test. The senior class will be taking a field trip to Bethel Horizons in Dodgeville, WI to take part in a ropes course designed to test their personal limits as they prepare for life after graduation. In addition to the PARCC and SAT test, students in grades 5,8 and grades 9-12 Course-Based: Biology will be taking the required Illinois Science Assessment (ISA). This test is scheduled to be taken on April 10. Please note that the S.I.P. Day scheduled for April 5, has been moved to April 7. Spring break will begin with a 2:00 dismissal on Wednesday, April 12 and school will resume on Tuesday, April 18.

Junior High Academic Bowl (JHAB) 2017
Seventeen grade eight students excitedly awaited the start of the 2017 season. They were most anxious to attend the first meet in River Ridge. Their excitement and enthusiasm yielded more wins than losses! Of the nine rounds, the three SM teams won 5 and lost 4. One team won all three rounds! They were off to a successful start!
They went into the second meet with determination and new goals. The five participating schools gathered at Galena on Friday, March 3. Each team was able to secure just one win each. There was disappointment but renewed determination. They were confident that they would not remain defeated, and their spirit prevailed.
We traveled to East Dubuque after about a week’s break on Monday, March 13. The students buzzed on the bus ride that the meet was assuredly going to be a more successful one than the previous. That same team from the first meet won all three rounds a second time! Each of the other teams contributed another win. This made the tally five wins and four losses again. They were deservedly pleased.
While we had hoped for a stronger conclusion, it was not to be so. On Tuesday, March 14, the students ended their season with one win each.
The students and I are grateful to SM School for the opportunity to participate in such a program. The student comments continue to indicate what an exceptional chance this is to challenge themselves while interacting with and gaining an awareness of other students in their age bracket. Several participants also spoke about looking forward to another chance to continue this experience in high school!

8th grade students worked for approximately 10 weeks with Mrs. Deppe researching careers. They each chose a career to investigate and collected data on income, job outlook, job descriptions, education needed, and largest employers. Students created presentation boards and presented them at our first ever Careerpolooza. All Scales Mound students were invited to attend along with 8th grade parents. We hope to make this an annual event.
ON MARCH 9TH WE INDUCTED FOUR NEW STUDENTS INTO THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY. NICHOLAS DAVIS, DESARAY BORDNER, EVE NOTTROTT AND ISAAC STADEL WERE INDUCTED DURING A CANDLE LIGHT CEREMONY. STUDENTS JOINED CURRENT MEMBERS - LAUREN SIGAFUS, Z ACHERY STADEL, KELSEY WIENEN, JACOB WINSLOW, ERIN WINTER, MADELYN COCAGNE, AND KRISTY KRUGER.
Germany and Ireland Traveler Update
In the summer of 2018, nineteen Scales Mound students will be traveling to either Germany or Ireland to participate in a global learning adventure. To help offset student costs, there will be a pork chop dinner on April 24. Students are now selling tickets for a 1-‐chop or 2-‐chop meal. This will be a drive-‐thru dinner. Students will sell the tickets in advance and as a ticket purchaser, you simply drive up to the back lot of the school, hand the students your ticket and they will deliver your meal right to the car. Serving time will be from 4:00-‐7:30 p.m.
There are still opportunities for students to sign up for either trip. Contact Mrs. Kelly for the Germany trip and Mrs. Oellerich for the Ireland trip. In particular there is one spot open to travel to Ireland in early July 2018. It can be an adult, and there are no chaperone responsibilities.
The 1st Grade class has been learning about the solar system in a hands on way! Creating models is one way students can demonstrate their understanding of science phenomena. After studying books and videos to research the sun, Earth and moon, the kids created moving models of these 3 celestial bodies. Using construction paper and brads, through a process of trial and error, they were able to demonstrate how the Earth orbits the sun while the moon orbits the Earth. Some were able to incorporate a spinning Earth into their model as well. Verbal explanations and written accounts were part of the assessment, because understanding and writing about science phenomena are essential elements of our new school-‐wide science program entitled "Next Generation Science".
