Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are used to monitor and control plant & equipment in industries such as telecommunications, water - waste control, energy, oil and gas refining and transportation. These systems encompass the transfer of data between a SCADA central host computer and several  Remote Terminal Units (RTU)  and/or Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and the Central Host and the Operator Terminals. SCADA systems are special communication systems designed to interface master terminal units (MTU typically Citect, Wonderware, iFix etc.) and remote terminal units (RTU) over a communication path that can cover large distances. Such systems are characterised by communication dropouts and slow communication data rates and consequently require special engineering solution and protocols.  SCADA systems today are characterised by low speed open circuit communication components with traditional radio and telemetry interfacing.
