Budding Tamworth Youth Jared Scott’s Country Music DreamBy Sophie Fitzgerald

Tamworth local Jared Scott began performing at a young age. Now only 21, he is already working towards his dream of being a professional country musician. Entering his first talent quest as an introverted 11 year old he has since grown into quite the accomplished young musician, boasting performances with Troy Cassar-Daley, the NSW Schools Spectacular and Takamine Showcase.

Jared graduated from the highly regarded country music school for juniors, Tamworth Camerata College three times, here he was propelled to further his musical talents and pursue his dreams. Following high school, he focused on his career and hopes to be a successful professional country music singer like his idols, Keith Urban and Troy Cassar-Daley.

Jared has been working proficiently across NSW not only as a solo artist but with his band, Route 67. To see Jared live action for yourself, head to Scone’s Royal Hotel on 17 May at 7.30pm for a great night of entertainment! Image: Jared Scott

Twenty One Years Celebrated By Laura Sykes

Horse Festival News UpdateThe festival is upon us once more and what a superb sequence of events so far. The King of the Ranges was a magnificent display of horsemanship and stock handling skills. ‘Scone Horse Sports for Schools’ was held at White Park last Monday and attracted over two hundred and twenty competitors for a day of show jumping, dressage, ridden classes and sporting events. Our local schools reigned supremely with Scone Grammar winning the Primary Shield and Scone High winning the Secondary Shield.

This Thursday night 9 May is the official opening of the festival with a cocktail party at the at Scone Race Course Function Centre and Scone Grammar Antiques Fair has a preview party on Friday night 10 May.

Unfortunately the Members of the Household of the Green Knight who were planning to hold the Medieval Martial Arts Tournament and Jousting display have had to cancel due to a tragic paddock accident last weekend which left one horse dead and another severely injured. We hope to have a Medieval Martial Arts weekend at a later date.

The parade on Saturday morning 11 May will be a highlight of the festival. Please note that since the trains will be stopped from 10am to 1pm on parade day there will be more rail traffic before 10am which will cause traffic congestion in Kelly Street. After the parade follow the alluring lunchtime aromas to the Grammar School Fete or if you prefer some fast paced action, travel out to the polo grounds at Gundy to watch the Piesley Trophy.

Don’t forget to mark the date in the calendar for the ‘Fireworks Finale’ out at Lake Glenbawn on Sunday 19 May.

Countdown to SCADS Opening Show! By Sophie Fitzgerald

The curtains will rise early this month as the Scone Community Amateur Dramatic Society (otherwise known as SCADS) prepare for the commencement of its 118th prestigious production which will launch itself during the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival.Simon William’s comedy, ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ will be performed at Scone’s ‘Old Court Theatre’ in Kingdon Street with the cast of five having worked tirelessly under the leadership of director Gillie Hayes in rehearsal and preparation for the show.

Gillie had first performed for SCADS in 1962 when Scone’s Courthouse was first converted into the impressive theatre, which has recently been undertaken by the Upper Hunter Shire Council to assist in restoration. The first production saw NBN’s cameras capturing the historical moment as Gillie played the leading role in ‘Bold Lover’, and since then, she has continued to be actively involved as a performer and director.

‘Nobody’s Perfect’ is a delightful comedy about a statistician who wants to become a writer and resorts to subterfuge to have his novel published by a feminist publishing house. Living in the same house as his teenage daughter and ‘out there’ father creates some humorous situations.

The local on-stage cast consists of Damien Saunders, Nicole Wild, Liza White, Phil Charley and Michael Cook with a backstage crew of four. The ten performances will consist of one matinee show on 19 May and the remaining performances on the 11, 15, 16, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 May with the finale being held 1 June.

So whether you are a theatre connoisseur or comedy enthusiast, make sure you head to the office of Kate Mailer Solicitor in Liverpool Street, Scone to purchase tickets or call 65451933 for enquiries. It’s a city-standard show without the long drive!

Winners are Grinners at the 2012 Business Awards By Sophie Fitzgerald

The Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce & Industry held the 2012 Business Awards recently, which was hailed as a wonderful event. It was a night to acknowledge and award the businesses of Muswellbrook and its surrounding areas for their efforts and success throughout the year. Many businesses were awarded on the night for various categories, in particular, the Hospitality & Tourism category - the awards going to the Railway Hotel, Hunter Belle Cheese and Two Rivers Wines.

Greg Smith, licensee of the Railway Hotel accepted the small business award on behalf of his team after many years of growth. Numerous upgrades have taken place as the hotel now boasts a fully equipped TAB facility, renovated beer garden including an entertainment stage and fire bucket with rotisserie. There are many plans in place over the next years also.

“We were thrilled to win and be recognised for all the hard work our team had put in over the past few years. We had a great night at the awards; the service was great and the way the night was run was fantastic. It was nice to be able to sit down and watch people be congratulated on their efforts in our local community”, explained Greg.

Two Rivers Wines took out the shared large business award. The business, owned by Brett and Linda Keeping have specialised in making exquisite wines since 1988, now a premier and quite popular choice of winery, especially in the Hunter Valley. The continuously growing company is situated amongst the beautiful scenery of the Denman area and is well worth the visit.

Last but not least Hunter Belle Cheese and its proprietors Geoff and Tania Chesworth also took home the large business award. Alongside their range of delectable homemade cheeses and seasonal breakfast and lunch menus, they have also introduced many new features throughout 2012 including ‘Bessie’ the milking cow and her factual dairy mural thanks to funding from Destinations NSW as well as fresh fudge and gelato - all made on site.

The Railway Hotel, Hunter Belle Cheese and Two Rivers teams are congratulated on their continued efforts and success over 2012. Along with the other finalists and award winners, it was a fantastic event that highlighted the district’s businesses that continue to please and satisfy not only locals but visitors from far and wide and certainly make a good impression on the town.

Like Black Caviar, loved by all Australia, he was the grey stallion Gunsynd and, nicknamed the Goondiwindi Grey because of his colouring and Goondiwindi ownership, having won four major miles at four and when he retired from racing, he was Australia’s biggest money earner.

Tex Morton stirred the nation with a song – ‘The Goondiwindi Grey’; they built a statue to him at the town and this year celebrated the fortieth anniversary of his retirement from racing. Yet, Gunsynd only saw Goondiwindi briefly and there most certainly would not have been any connection if John Clift had not spruiked about him when he called into a Goondiwindi pub while carting him to the Brisbane for the yearling sales - A Goondiwindi Syndicate bought him for $1,300.

The Australian Stud Book shows grazier Joe McNamara as the breeder of Gunsynd, but the dam, a Newtown Wonder twin bought as a yearling for $100 at Scone Sales, spent four years at John Clift’s nearby ‘The Dip’ - a wheat growing, cattle and horse breeding property near Breeza, Liverpool Plains on alternate foal arrangement.

A brother to the stakes winners Sunset Red and Sunset Sue, Gunsynd was by Sunset Hue, a grey Star Kingdom sire resident at The Dip,

and was foaled and reared on it. He carried John Clift’s JC brand.

Although John Clift’s production of Gunsynd, a horse whose short stud career produced some good winners and the dam of an Australian Horse of the Year, Emancipation, delighted north-western NSW, it was his stellar services to the region’s racing over seventy years that resulted in the homage to him at Tamworth recently.

The big occasion was the opening at the Tamworth Racecourse of the John Clift Grandstand and Function Centre.

Basking in the glory of their patriarch’s honour were a big number of Clift family members, including sons, daughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and a great grandchild. The Clifts were pioneer settlers of the fertile Liverpool Plains and when John Clift was born, the family were standing sires and breeding racehorses for their own use on his birthplace - ‘The Dip’, near Breeza.

Now down to one horse, John has through life demonstrated that he has had a heart as big as Gunsynd. He has been involved in breeding and racing ever since he left school over seventy years ago and also been a willing worker for the industry, and an inspirational leader. He served initially on the committees for the Gunnedah

Jockey Club (1944 – 1966) and Gunnedah Picnic Race Club (1944 – 1950), followed with seventeen years on the West Tamworth Jockey Cub (1959-1976 - president for twelve years) and later had two stints with the Tamworth Jockey Club (1968 –1981 and 1989-2013). He was the Tamworth vice president in 1991, stood down after being president 1992 and back at the helm from 2002 to 2010.

Also during nine years, 1977 – 1986, in which he owned the historic Kia-Ora stud near Scone, including among sires until his untimely death at sixteen, Gunsynd - John Clift contributed to racing as a member of the Muswellbrook committee.

He was on the Country Racing Council for five years, the Hunter & North West Racing Council for seventeen years and the NSW Bloodhorse Breeders committee for nearly ten years.

Outside racing, he served on the Liverpool Plains Shire Council for fifteen years and on the Tamworth Show Society, one of which he is a Life Member.

Besides having the new Tamworth grandstand named after him, John Clift has been awarded the Sports Medal of Australia for his long service to racing and the Simon Nivison for his contribution to NSW Country Racing.

Image: John Clift, the 88 years old patriarch of the Clift family of the Liverpool Plains and NSW Country Racing photographed by John Drew with Clift family members: including sons, daughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and a great grandchild, at the opening the new John Clift Grandstand and Function Centre at the Tamworth Racecourse.

Although there were a number of other breeders of heroes of Australian racing in the big gathering at the recent Tamworth Cup meeting, including industry leader and Arrowfield Stud, Scone supremo John Messara, only the day’s guest of honour, 88-year-old John Clift, could boast being the breeder of one inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame.

Experience. Sound advice. Positive outcomes. We think that just about covers it!

On May 17 and 18 this year, the Horse Capital of Australia will come alive with some of the most prestigious racehorses, trainers and owners the nation has to offer. The region is already home to several internationally renowned thoroughbred studs and nurseries, including Emirates Park, Darley, Arrowfield and Coolmore. Held as part of the annual two-week-long festival celebrating all things horse and all they’ve done for the area, the Scone Cup Carnival boasts close to $2million in prizemoney, however the racing isn’t the only attraction. Fourteen thousand visitors are expected to turn up the turf over the two day programme, with a significant proportion of these being drawn in by the ever-popular Harvey World Travel Scone Fashions on

the Field, organised by major sponsors Sharon Lenton from Sharon Lenton Events and Rachel Brown from Define Style - $15,000 prizemoney for the winner and an all-expenses paid trip for two to Vanuatu attracts entrants from all over Australia.

In 2010 the Minister for Racing and Gaming & Minister for Sport and Recreation, The Hon. Kevin Greene awarded Scone Race Club a ‘standalone’ race day of its own, the first time in two hundred years that a country area was recognised in this way, usually reserved for metropolitan racing clubs. Sarah Wills, CEO of Scone Race Club, is proud that Scone was deemed fit to receive such an honour. “With state of the art facilities and a fantastic racing

surface, we love to be able to give racegoers a slice of the country in stylish and elegant surroundings. The racing is second to none and travellers from the city enjoy the relaxed atmosphere the carnival offers.”

And, as always, it’s all systems go for the club as the date for the carnival inches closer to the finish line. Cholesterol is a type of fat that is carried around in the blood. It performs useful functions in the body and is a major building block for cells and many of your hormones, including oestrogen, testosterone and cortisol. Cholesterol is also important for the synthesis of vitamin D, as well as bile acids which aid in the digestion of fats.

The Good versus The Bad Cholesterol

HDL and LDL are letters that you may have seen before on a blood test, and your practitioner will be interested in reviewing these to monitor your health. But what do they mean? Your total cholesterol is made up of two types of cholesterol, often referred to as “good” and “bad” cholesterol supporting HDL levels.

Natural Support For Cholesterol

Your practitioner can assess your cholesterol levels and your risk of cardiovascular disease. Being aware of your current state of health gives you the opportunity to take positive steps to improve your health right now. Staying healthy in the present will reduce your risk of cardiovascular and chronic disease in the future.

Your practitioner can prescribe some key nutrients specifically to help you maintain healthy cholesterol levels and cardiovascular health.

Six Tips For Optimal Cardiovascular Performance

Take on these tips for eating and living to

support healthy cholesterol and cardiovascular health:

• Follow the Mediterranean diet. People eating this diet rich in essential nutrients and antioxidants have the lowest rates of cardiovascular disease in the world.

• Reduce saturated fats by choosing lean meats. Eating too much saturated fat may increase your weight and cholesterol levels.

• Eliminate detrimental trans fats found in many fast foods, fried foods and packaged baked goods.

• Cut down on sugary refined carbohydrates and processed food. These foods often contain ‘hidden sugars’ that can be converted to fat when supply is high.

• Weight loss. If you are overweight, losing extra weight will help to lose the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. Your Practitioner can recommend a clinically-proven weight loss program and targeted supplements to assist healthy weight management.

• Get moving towards a healthy lifestyle. Exercise improves cardiovascular and overall health and supports your “good” cholesterol levels. Move away from unhealthy habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol intake as they increase your cardiovascular risk.

Getting Your Ratios Right For Life

Achieving and maintaining healthy cholesterol levels can be simple with the support of your

healthcare practitioner. With the help of natural medicines and by following some key dietary and lifestyle recommendations, you can effectively manage your cholesterol levels. Talk to your practitioner today to get started on your journey towards improved cardiovascular health.

Hunter Region Shines During National Heritage WeekThe Hunter has celebrated two centuries of agricultural history with the listing of Tocal College on the State Heritage Register and the release of a comprehensive study into the region’s pastoral homesteads.

NSW Heritage Minister, Robyn Parker visited Tocal College to mark Heritage Week.

Ms Parker said Tocal College and the Hunter Homesteads Project report showed how important agriculture was in the settlement and growth of the Hunter Valley – and remains today.

“The 1965 Tocal College complex is a modernist masterpiece and one of Australia’s leading agricultural learning institutions, set in the grounds of one of the country’s oldest pastoral homesteads and a still thriving farming complex teaching new generations about agriculture,” Ms Parker said.

“It takes inspiration from the colonial farm buildings of the original 1841 Tocal homestead, with carpentry detailing that emulates the craftsmanship of builders a century and a half ago.

“The soaring roof trusses of the hall have the grandeur of a Gothic cathedral and were inspired by the Tocal barn designed one hundred years before by Colonial architect Edmund Blacket.

“The astonishing spire of the chapel is a feat of engineering, while the interior of the chapel is designed to maximise light and sunshine.” Ms Parker said the popularity of Tocal College and the Tocal Field Day in May showed just how important agriculture remains to the story of the Hunter.

“Agriculture is a cornerstone of the development of the Hunter Valley,” Ms Parker said.

“The Hunter Homesteads Project captures the enduring legacy of the 1830s-1850s homesteads built across the Hunter, such as here at Tocal.

“It has investigated not just the heritage buildings from these early pastoral farms, it has also looked at the archaeological potential of the properties; the cultural landscape elements that survive and the people that were the story –quite amazing characters and personalities that resonate to this day.”

“The Hunter Homesteads Project identified and documented about two hundred historic homesteads from the period. Some, such as Tocal and Aberglassen are already listed on the State Heritage Register,” she said.

This is No Ordinary Rodeo!By Laura Sykes

This year marks a milestone in the Scone Charity Rodeo’s long-founded history. Eight years ago the rodeo adopted the ethos of donating to a local charity, and this year its popularity and success is well and truly established, with over five hundred competitors making this the biggest year yet!

One of the biggest drawcards during the annual Scone & Upper Hunter Horse Festival, the Charity Rodeo is well and truly an adrenaline-packed thrillseeker’s dream. One of the top three rodeos in the state, the event draws in big names from all over the country, not only for the experience but the prizemoney and points that go along with it.

“Pointscores work on a ‘point for a dollar’ type system”, says Jade Smith, president of the SCR. “Because it’s become such a big rodeo, if you do well at Scone it’s a big stepping point on the way to the nationals. Each year the rodeo also donates a considerable sum of money to a local charity or cause, ranging from hospitals to schools to individuals in need of help, so it’s all helping a good cause as well.”

This year’s five hundred plus competitors makes this the biggest year yet by far. “We’ve had to get four stock contractors this year, and each will be bringing their best. Most rodeos only have one or two. Comparing this to the nationals in Tamworth which use around ten stock contractors every year, Scone is a huge event,” says Jade.

The event attracts big name competitors every year, generally with all the national champions in each event from previous years attending in an attempt to reclaim their prize. According to Jade, no records have been broken yet in Scone, but fast times and high scores indicate that it shouldn’t be long now until some records are seriously beaten.

One highlight this year will be the involvement of Queensland stock contractors, Gill Bros, renowned nationwide in the rodeo industry for their high quality stock. Amongst their string will be ‘Destination Unknown’, a previously unridden bull who promises to give as good as he gets.

For those not quite up to the challenge of taking on the real beasts, however,

there will be a mechanical bull for children and adults alike to try their hand at the rodeo’s most popular spectator event – the bull riding.

“The timed events like team roping and steer wrestling are becoming more and more popular with the competitors,” says Jade. “But for the crowds you just can’t beat the bull riding.”

The main rodeo will be held at White Park in Scone on Saturday 11 May with a full schedule for the juniors on the following day. The main events begin at 4pm however for those real die-hard rodeo fans out there, competition begins at 10am. A barbeque, canteen and bar will also be available on the premises.

“Outside of the races, this is probably the biggest day in Scone with the parade and rodeo. The quality of stock and competition is unbeatable,” says Jade. “This is no ordinary rodeo.”
