Pacific Chorale has named Elizabeth Pear-son, a veteran Orange County marketer and fundraiser, as the new Chief Executive for the organization. Pearson will be assuming the role that was recently vacated by the Chorale’s previous President, Kelly Ruggirello, when she stepped down to become the Executive Director of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra.

“After an extensive search, we are delighted to have been able to recruit Elizabeth,” said Martin Hubbard, Chairman of the Pacific Cho-rale Board of Directors. “We believe she will be able to create a greater awareness of our organization and help us attract new audiences who will delight in our classical choral music performances.”

Pearson, who joins the 45-year-old non-profit after having served as the Director of Development for the Laguna Playhouse, stated, “This is an exciting move for me. As someone who appreciates classical music, I am looking forward to building greater support for this in-ternationally renowned organization. I believe this presents a growth opportunity both for the Chorale and for me.”

Bringing over ten years of fundraising experi-ence and over twenty years of marketing expe-rience to Pacific Chorale, Pearson previously owned a consultancy business specializing in marketing, PR and fundraising for fifteen years. She served as the Foundation Execu-tive Director and Marketing Director of South Coast Medical Center and helped to raise funds

as a consultant for numerous Orange County organizations including the Rancho Santa Margarita Community Center, the Laguna Beach Boys and Girls Club, the Laguna Beach Seniors, and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. Eliz-abeth is also a current mem-ber of the Laguna Beach City Council and has served as a three-time Mayor for the Ci ty. She is known in her community as being a strong advocate for the arts, serving currently on both the Laguna Beach Live! and Laguna Plein Air Painters Association Board of Trustees — and previously on the Board of the Laguna Art Museum. She graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Business Administration from Baldwin Wallace College (Cleveland, Ohio) with a Major in Market-ing.

Pacific Chorale Artistic Di-rector John Alexander added, “In my first meeting with Elizabeth a few weeks ago, I was thrilled to discover an energetic, exciting, and charismatic personality with all of the traits of a highly successful leader. Her extensive experience in administrative leader-

ship, fundraising and marketing, is a perfect match for the needs of our organization at this time. I very much look forward to beginning our work together to further the artistic mission of Pacific Chorale, and bringing the organization to an exciting new level in our evolution.”

The Sawdust Art Festival complet-ed its first-ever “Sustain Local Art and Cuisine” fundraising event Sunday, March 10 from 3-7 pm at the Sawdust grounds, in partnership with local restaurant 370 Common. The sold out event filled 50 seats with guests at the family-style dining table. Guests enjoyed a quaint evening filled with sustainable gourmet food, donated artwork, live art demonstrations, and the music of Jason Feddy and his bassist Alan Deremo and drummer Ray Weston.

Guests purchased $4,000 worth of artwork Sunday evening and the moneys raised by putting on the special event will benefit the Saw-dust Art Education Fund and will be directly utilized in the creation of a 15-minute educational artist video. The artist video project will continue a series of important documentaries the Sawdust had to put on hold due to lack of funding in 2009.

The inaugural fundraising event was such a success, there are al-ready plans of doubling next year’s event size, opening the seats offered to 100 guests. An enjoyable evening was had by all, with water poured

into glasses made by Muf-fin Spencer-Devlin, spring salad served in bowls made by Christopher Jeffries, Maggie Spencer and Dawn Spurlock, and strawberry shortcake served in dessert bowls made by Suzanne Esko and Siân Poeschl.

Among those artists that contributed dining ware are: Sherry Bullard, John Eagle, Suzanne Esko, Rachel Goberman, Char-leine Guy, Gavin Heath, Christopher Jeffries, James Koch, James Lashley, Bette McIntire, Jason McQuaid, Nadine Nordstrom, Siân and Troy Poeschl, Jan Sat-tler, Julie Setterholm, Jane and Patty Slowsky, Maggie Spencer, Muffin Spencer-Devlin, Dawn Spurlock, Sue Thompson and Mark Winner.

The Sawdust Art Festival is located at 935 Laguna Canyon Road. The Sawdust Art Festival is a non-profit art organization dedicated to educat-ing the public and promoting the art created in Laguna Beach. Two-hour Sawdust Studio Art Classes are of-

fered every Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the Sawdust Art Festival Grounds. To check out more details about the Sawdust Art Festival and other upcoming events and festivals, please navigate to www.sawdustartfestival.org or call 949-494-3030.

WE HAvE A NEW POPE! POPE FRANCISWhite smoke: new Pope elected

in ConclaveIt’s official: white smoke pouring

out of the Sistine Chapel chimney signals that we have a new Pope! The billowing white smoke began spilling out of the chimney at approximately 7:06 p.m. local time, indicating the Cardinals had reached consensus on a candidate in the second round of balloting Wednesday afternoon. This means that at least two thirds, or 77 of the 115 cardinals gathered in conclave since Tuesday afternoon are united in their support for the candidate who has now become the 265th successor of St Peter.

As the cheering crowds waited ea-gerly in St Peter’s Square, the new pontiff changed into the traditional white vestments in what is called the Room of Tears. After that, he returned to the Sistine Chapel where each of the Cardinal electors knealt to offer a sign of hom-age and obedience to their new Holy Father. Following that ritual, the new Pope moved to the Pauline Chapel to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Shortly after that, the senior cardinal deacon, French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran appeared between the red curtains of the central balcony on St Peter’s Basilica to proclaim the famous Latin words ‘Habemus Papam’, revealing the identity of the new pontiff and the name that he has chosen.

A moment later, the Pope came out onto that balcony to greet the crowds and to give his first ‘Urbi et Orbi’ blessing to the city of Rome and to the world.

CARDINAL JORGE MARIO BERGOGLIO: Bergo-glio, 76, has spent nearly his entire career at home in Argentina, overseeing churches and shoe-leather priests. The archbishop of Buenos Aires reportedly got the second-most votes after Joseph Ratzinger in the 2005 papal election, and he has long specialized in the kind of pastoral work that some say is an essential skill for the next pope. In a lifetime of teaching and leading priests in Latin America, which has the largest share of

the world’s Catholics, Bergoglio has shown a keen politi-cal sensibility as well as the kind of self-effacing humility that fellow cardinals value highly. Bergoglio is known for modernizing an Argentine church that had been among the most conservative in Latin America.

In a lifetime of teaching and leading priests in Latin America, which has the largest share of the world’s Catholics, Bergoglio has shown a keen political sensibility as well as the kind of self-effacing humility that fellow cardinals value highly, says his official biographer, Sergio Rubin.

Bergoglio would likely encourage the church’s 400,000 priests to hit the streets to capture more souls, Rubin said in an Associated Press interview. He is also most comfortable taking a low profile, and his personal style is the antithesis of Vatican splendor. “It’s a very curious thing: When bishops meet, he always wants to sit in the back rows. This sense of humility is very well seen in Rome,” Rubin said.

Health experts recommend young families, especially expecting moms, should aim to eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods -- those that are bursting with vitamins and minerals in every bite. A serving of seafood, for in-stance, packs nutrients like protein and omega-3s into only about 100 calories. For this reason, eating fish and shellfish two to three times a week is linked to healthy hearts among adults and a brain boost in babies.

Warm weather is the perfect time to learn light, delicious ways to make fish your family’s new favorite.

Healthy eating made simple with seafood

Instead of deli meat sandwiches, try a tuna, crab or salmon salad with one of these creative mix-in combi-nations to help get to your weekly recommended servings of seafood:

* Plain yogurt, slivered almonds, diced apples and dried cranberries.

* Olive oil, capers, diced red onion and basil.

* Cottage cheese, diced celery and a splash of lemon juice.

Place on a whole wheat roll or eat as a dip with crackers for a simple and nutritious picnic lunch.

As an alternative to traditional sum-mer barbecue items like hot dogs and

brats, which are higher in calories and fat, fire up the barbecue for one of these fish dishes:

* Kebabs with shrimp, scallops, peppers and pineapple.

* Fillets of salmon or cod grilled on a wood plank.

* Grilled pizza with mozzarella, tomatoes and canned tuna (full recipe below).

Seafood matters most for moms-to-be

Fish and seafood is packed with nutrients that are especially important for the health of pregnant women and growing babies, yet 80 percent of women don’t eat the recommended amount. During your pregnancy, of-ficial guidelines from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration say:

* Eat seafood two to three times each week.

* Eat a variety of fish.* As much as half (6 ounces) of fish

each week can be albacore tuna.* The only fish to avoid completely

are shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish.

“Seafood contains a package of powerhouse nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy - omega-3s, calcium, vitamin D and iron,” says Dr. Ashley Roman, an obstetrician and mother of two. “Most expecting

moms don’t get enough nutrient-rich fish in their diet and are missing out on a brain development boost for their babies.”

A new guide created with registered dietitians and doctors is now available to help expecting and new moms eat plenty of fish. “A Seafood Lover’s Guide to Eating During Pregnancy,” explains why eating seafood is im-portant, how much to eat, and how to eat it with delicious and nutritious recipes and snack ideas. It’s fun for parents to surprise chil-dren with new small pets, like guinea pigs and hamsters. Plus, these small animals are a great first pet for kids and can teach children responsibility. But before adding to the family, it’s important to make sure you are bring-ing home the right pet for your family.

“Small pets are great, playful new pals. And the best way for families to choose a pet and make them part of your home is to consider how the pet is going to fit into your lives,” says Dr.

Kemba Marshall, veterinarian and pet care expert at PetSmart. “Families should first learn about each pet’s unique characteristics to prepare for a change in their daily habits and responsibilities in caring for their new pet.”

Onl ine resources, including PetSmart’s Small Pet Center, have tips on how to choose a small pet, whether it’s a chinchilla, gerbil or hamster, based on children’s ages, pet-care experience and daily time

requirements for care.

Take some time to learn how to best care for your small pet before you bring it home. Make sure you:

Choose the right habitat: Small pet habitats have varying requirements, and there are must-have supplies and accessories to keep your pet happy and healthy. For example, guinea pigs are easy to tame, affectionate and expressive, and need plenty of floor space to play. Hamsters, which are known for being playful and ac-tive, need a multilevel habitat large enough to include an exercise wheel and tunnels.

Nominate your pet’s care takers: Match your child’s maturity to the pet they will care for. For instance, ger-bils are great beginner pets because they are gentle, social and enjoy the companionship of another gerbil. Or, your child may prefer a chinchilla as they have perky personalities and will bond with their pet parent through regular, gentle handling.

Understand the pet’s habits: Some small pets are nocturnal and are most likely to be active at night – which means you might not get as much

daytime play time as you like. Ask about special care needs for your small pet, too. Chinchillas, which are known for their especially soft fur, need dust baths to clean themselves, and Syrian hamsters require groom-ing products like brushes and wipes help them look and smell good.

Provide proper nutrition: Each animal has its own nutritional needs. Guinea pigs and chinchillas are herbivores so they need diets that include at least 75 percent high-fiber hay. Guinea pigs also need vitamin C supplements. Many rodents’ teeth never stop growing, so providing wood chews or edible houses offers not only a yummy surprise but also helps keep teeth trimmed.

Talk to experts: Take a family trip to a store such as PetSmart, where associates can help with pet selection and walk you through the basics of habitat cleaning, feeding schedules and how to properly and safely handle small pets. Each store’s book section also carries pet health manuals and pet-specific handbooks.

Selma’s Chicago Pizzeria & Tap Room is celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary this St. Patrick’s Day at their original RSM location in the Lowes Shopping Center. According to the owners, Mike Phillips Jr. and Eric Miller, long-term local residents, this is going to be a great party for this momentous occasion. “We want to show our appreciation to our loyal customers who have helped us become what we are today!” says Eric Miller.

The anniversary festivities will commence on Monday, March 11th and extend to March 17th. Selma’s will feature a $3.17 (St. Patty’s day) menu on select items including a few Irish beers! Bring your crazy hat and your green clothes and join the party! They say that their vision was always to open up a quality, full-service pizza restaurant with a fun and lively atmosphere at a moderate price point. Both owners have a great fondness for craft beers and wines and when the space opened up next to the Rancho Santa Margarita location they collectively had a “beer-iphany”. To create a Tap Room, a cozy room fi lled with a superb selection of twenty fi ve carefully made small batch beers from local to abroad that would complement the Selma’s fare. Selma’s serves 6 different styles of pizzas: Deep Dish, Chicago Pie, Low Profi le, Artisan, Artisan Wheat, and Gluten Free. In addition, they offer lots of great pastas, gourmet salads, Panini sandwiches, appetizers, desserts, and one of the largest selections of beers & wine in the area.”Live Life Pedal to the Metal is not only the company motto it is also their #1 pizza. The top selling combo pizza: pepperoni, Italian sausage, meatballs, green peppers, onions, olives, mushrooms and our deep dish pizzas are always topped with fresh Roma tomatoes. Selma’s just came out with a new dessert called Captain Caramel Crunch, which is Captain Crunch encrusted bread sticks battered and fried, served with 2 scoops of Vanilla Bean ice cream and drizzled with caramel sauce. Selma’s offers full service or drop and go Catering .

With the positive reception in Rancho Santa Margarita they decided to open up another restaurant in the area of San Clemente’s popular

downtown Del Mar Street. A third location soon followed in 2011, when Selma’s expanded into Ladera Ranch with yet another popular restaurant and tap room featuring 30 craft beers on tap.Selma’s is known locally as an independent restaurant with strong community ties, which focuses on their delighted customers having a great experience each and every time! Co-owner Eric Miller says; The crew at Selma’s understands that everybody’s most recent meal at Selma’s is their impression of our restaurant. Because of this, we try to serve up a large heaping dollop of customer service at every table! Our motto is “Great tasting food always served with a smile!”

Co-owner Mike Phillips Jr. says: “A core principle of Selma’s has always been to make sure that we provide a positive work environment for our staff. Most of our staff come from the local area and have grown up eating at Selma’s. We want every employee to love their job; we know that if they love their job, our customers will have a better experience! Some of the greatest rewards we have had with Selma’s is from pleasing our customers. When you are out and someone stops you and says “I love Selma’s!” and they go on to talk about menu items and the service they received and then touch on the beers they enjoyed. That is a great conversation for us! It’s a hard business, but those compliments make it all worthwhile! We are currently looking at locations to build another Selma’s in 2013.”

Selma’s has raised over $100,000 for local charities over the last 10 years. The local schools, sports teams, churches, Red Cross, and other organizations have all been the benefi ciaries of our “Eat Dough, Raise Dough” program. Selma’s will host a charity or group and give 20% of the net sales back to the cause. Selma’s is the marquis scoreboard sponsor at Tesoro High School. Selma’s offers an E-club program where people receive 2 email specials per month (plus a free appetizer and birthday and anniversary email.

“We would just like to thank all of our wonderful customers for the support they have given us over the past 10 years. “It’s been a wild ride, but as we preach, we live life pedal to the metal!”, says Eric Miller.

uNITED CEREBRAL PALSy BENEFITS FROM PSI DELTA SIgMA FASHION SHOW AND SEA & SKy guILD CASINO ROyALE FuNDRAISERS

Celebrating its 60th year of serving Orange County children with disabilities, United

Cerebral Palsy of Orange County (UCP-OC) was the fortunate beneficiary of two recent special fundraising events.

The Beta Lambda and Beta Chi Chapters of Psi Delta Sigma presented their 6th annual Have a Heart Fashion Show & Boutique fundraiser on March 2 which netted $20,000 for the nonprofit that serves nearly 4,000 families challenged by special needs.

Co-chaired by Psi Delta Sigma members Cathy Lagoe and Ellie Carlile, the lovely afternoon affair was held at Embassy Suites Brea beginning with a boutique which included variety clothing, jewelry, accessories and home product vendors. After shopping, guests made their way into the hotel ballroom for a delightful luncheon followed by an exclusive JOCKEY Person to person fashion show. Led by JOCKEY Person to person representative Marijane Relth, the fashion show featured volunteer models from Psi Delta Sigma sorority and friends wearing the company’s beauti-ful, on-trend and unbelievably versatile fashions in the season’s latest colors. Key committee members included vendor chair Kelly Barbera, silent auction chair Sheryl Jimerson and Sharon Barrett, the historian for the organization and finance chair.

The sorority has supported United Cerebral Palsy for over a half a century and since 1968, the Beta Lambda & Beta Chi Chapters of Psi Delta Sigma have raised over $2 million for the southern California United Cerebral Palsy organizations.

The Sea and Sky Guild of United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County raised nearly $70,000 at their glitzy Evening in Monte Carlo Casino Royale fundraiser on March 9 at Crevier Classic Cars in Costa Mesa. The evening highlight was honoring Afshin Aminian, M.D. with the organization’s Humanitarian Award. Dr. Aminian is the Medical Director CHOC Children’s Orthopaedic Institute and an internationally renowned pediatric orthopaedic surgeon who offers invaluable medical expertise and support to children with disabilities at UCP-OC.

Event chair and Sea & Sky president Linda Beresford said, “The guild was ex-tremely proud to acknowledge Dr. Afshin Aminian for his dedication and commitment to helping children with cerebral palsy and other disabilities which demonstrates exactly what our guild supports.”

Set among 25,000 square feet of premier classic and exotic cars, the evening began with a champagne cocktail hour and expansive silent auction among the ritz and glitz of the Monte Carlo themed décor and incredible collection of rare cars and memorabilia.

As the evening progressed, guests joined lively casino games of black jack, poker, craps, Texas hold-em’. Angels Chairman of the Board Dennis Kuhl served as one of the evening’s celebrity dealers. Above All Catering provided various gourmet food stations including appetizers, mini gourmet burgers, noodle bar and desserts.

A live auction followed the moving presentation by Sea & Sky Guild president Linda Beresford to Dr. Afshin Aminian. After a short video, United Cerebral Palsy client Leo Kobayashi then shared his passion for the organization and the message to “never give up on your dreams.”

The Sea & Sky Guild is a women’s guild of United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County that coordinates an annual fundraising event supporting the Sea & Sky Therapy Scholarship Fund for continued therapy for families beyond the limits of government funded therapy contracts or private insurance.

United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County provides vital services that support families of children with disabilities to improve individual well-being from birth through early adulthood. For more than a half a century, United Cerebral Palsy has helped children with a wide range of disabilities to lead a Life Without Limits and achieve their full potential and inclusion into society at all levels.

: San Clemente Sunrise Rotary Club will present its $5,000 Arons-Oliver Grant award to City of San Cle-mente Beaches, Parks & Recreation Department in support of City’s Tierra Grande Preschool Play Center Pro-gram at the club’s Tuesday morning meeting, 7:15 AM, March 12, 2013 at the Talega Golf Club, Signature Grille 990 Avenida Talega, San Clemente.

The Tierra Grande Preschool Play Center will become the new home of the City’s Preschool Playschool. The center aims to serve residents of San Clemente by targeting children ages 3-5 years old and their families. 1,000 preschool aged children will be reached annually through this center’s programs.

Programs are designed and developed to allow children to explore the world that surrounds them, though art, music, sports, and social interactions. The intent is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can be introduced to as many different artistic opportunities and hands-on learning experiences. The City of San Clemente embraces the theory that children learn best through play, therefore Tierra Grande Preschool Play6 Center programs will be recreation based, infused with energy and colored with imagination boosting activities.

Grant money received will be used to purchase the necessary equipment and supplies to turn the empty Tierra Grande Park building into a Preschool Play Center. Supplies will include large area rug for circle time, a white board, musical instruments, art easels and various art supplies, active play equip-ment (including parachets, tubling mats, balls), and other materials reflective up the nature and theme of each specific course.

By Jessica RodriguezMore and more altruistic college

students are trading jello shots in Cancun for volunteer work. Many nonprofit groups offer a volunteer holiday for individuals, groups and family. This allows the busy college student, without much time to spare, to experience a foreign country while doing something for a worthy cause.

Volunteer opportunities are as wide ranging and diverse as the vol-unteers. Teaching English, construc-tion and community development, beach renovation, childcare, teaching children how to read, and stopping poaching are just some of the volun-teer opportunities available. Volunteer holidays are available in just about

any place you can think of, from South America, Kenya, Thailand, Greece, and Haiti.

Besides doing something good for someone else, the volunteer gets a lot from an alternative spring break. The ability to see a foreign country and meet people is a huge benefit. You can learn a lot through the train-ing and hands on experience. You can check with your college to see if they can give college credit for you volunteer experience. You will have something to put on resumes, scholarship forms and future college applications. Many organizations pro-vide summary of training, references, and certifications that can be used in future endeavors.

Some popular organization that of-

fer alternative spring breaks include:Global Vision International(GVI)

project.org/Earth Watch Institute http://www.

earthwatchGlobal Service Corps http://www.

globalservicecorps.org/Global Citizens http://www.global-

citizens.org/

Volunteers expenses are usually not paid for which means the student must pay. Cost can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. There are affordable local alternatives to volunteering during your spring break. Fundraising Assistance is of-fered through some organizations.

For example, Global Services Corps has put together a fundraising toolkit to help volunteers raise the money they need.

If that still isn’t an affordable op-tion, then there are many temporary volunteer opportunities in your area. VolunteerMatch.com matches a potential volunteer with possible volunteer opportunities in your area. There are already 2.5 million people registered with Volunteer Match. Search for volunteer opportunities by entering your area code. Habitat for Humanity also has nationwide volun-teer opportunities. So even if you are on a budget, you can do some good during your spring break.
