However, Oxford is also a cosmopolitan and modern city. Societies exist for everything from snowboarding and aikido to journalism and medieval music. The most famous of these is the Oxford Union, a prestigious debating society which over the years has attracted speakers ranging from Winston Churchill to Malcolm X, and from Yasser Arafat to the Dalai Lama.

Ancient and beautiful buildings dominate the city of Oxford, but it is also home to over 1,500 high-technology companies which have developed from University research or are attracted by the proximity of the University.

Oxford is just 56 miles (90km) north-west of London, and is connected to the capital by excellent bus and rail services, meaning that recruiters and speakers from the capital can visit the School on a daily basis, and that students have easy access to international airports.

Oxford is one of the most interesting and dynamic places in the world. As a city, it offers the perfect balance between academia and life. Here you feel like you are surrounded by the most fascinating people in the world. Peter Bisanz, MBA student

THE OXFORD EXPERIENCE

Oxford has educated future leaders for over 800 years. As a student in Oxford, you can enjoy the city’s centuries-old pleasures: punting on Oxford’s waterways and picnicking in its extensive parks; powering down the river in a rowing boat; browsing the artefacts in the Ashmolean, Britain’s oldest museum; walking through the early morning mist that rises above Christ Church Meadow; hearing the choristers sing from Magdalen Tower on May morning; or downing a pint in the Eagle and Child, where C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien used to meet.

COLLEGE LIFE

As an Oxford student, you will belong to one of the University’s 38 colleges. College life will enrich your time at Oxford, offering you the chance to socialise with students and faculty from diverse academic backgrounds. Colleges are a focus for sporting and cultural activity: teams compete with each other in sports such as rowing, cricket, and rugby; plays and musicals are staged in college halls and gardens; and concerts take place in college chapels and quadrangles.

Each college has its own distinctive identity. Some, like Christ Church, are grand and ancient; some, like St Catherine’s are modern and friendly; others, like Corpus Christi, are small and beautiful. Whichever college you choose, you will probably develop a strong loyalty to it that will stay with you way beyond graduation. Colleges have their own alumni societies and professional networks, which complement those offered to graduates by Oxford University and the Saïd Business School.

Colleges currently offering membership to Oxford MBA participants include:

Balliol College Brasenose College Campion Hall Christ Church Corpus Christi College Exeter College Green Templeton College Harris Manchester College Hertford College Jesus College Keble College Kellogg College

As I entered my college’s centuries-old hall on an early Saturday morning dressed in the full ‘sub-fusc’ of white bow tie and gown, with 200 fellow students spilling over benches and tables under the watchful paintings of kings, queens, and dons, it dawned on me... Oxford is like no other place on Earth.

ABOUT THE SAID BUSINESS SCHOOL

In the 2009 Financial Times ranking, Saïd Business School ranked among the top twenty full-time MBA programmes in the world. The School is also ranked in Business Week’s top ten MBA programmes outside the USA. In the university league table published by The Guardian in May 2009, the University of Oxford ranked first in the UK for undergraduate business. The University also ranked top for business studies in The Times report published in May 2009.

The School’s new building in the centre of Oxford opened in 2001 and was designed by Dixon and Jones, the architects responsible for the new Royal Opera House in London. In design, it brings together over three millennia of academic tradition, from its classical amphitheatre, to the mosque-like columns, medieval cloisters, horseshoe-style lecture theatres and contemporary interpretation of the traditional dreaming spire.

A key feature of the building is the provision of informal working areas. There are numerous open spaces throughout, including cloistered walkways and a large internal courtyard – all of which help to foster informal interaction between students, faculty and visitors. Anthony Hopwood, formerly Peter Moores Dean of the Saïd Business School, comments: “I call these ‘democratic spaces’ because of the ease of interaction which they facilitate.”

STATE OF THE ART FACILITIES

As well as being a place of study, the building is a place of work in a very modern sense. There are dozens of rooms available for project work, brainstorming and simply getting on with business. Thousands of network connections and Wi-Fi access mean you can always be connected, and in-house reprographics, IT and AV facilities provide for all modern business demands. 10/11 10/11

The School’s Sainsbury Library contains not only books, but also a collection of remote databases that provide students with access to cutting edge market research, and the complete listings of thousands of academic journals in full-text. The Library provides a gateway to a range of electronic resources including course reading lists with links to online readings.

As members of Oxford University, MBA students can also take advantage of all the facilities of one of the world’s leading universities. With resources including the famously comprehensive Bodleian Library and state-of-the-art research labs, Oxford can meet almost any academic or business need.

The architects have created a beautiful, serene building that performs the noble trick of appearing to be brand new and very much of our times, yet rooted in the distant past. Jonathan Glancey, The Guardian

Examine the foundations of business The first two terms will immerse you in modern enterprise – from the economic theory of the firm, to the valuation of businesses and the choice of strategic models. The goal of these courses is to provide a breadth and depth of knowledge that will allow you to approach any business situation with confidence and understanding.

Develop your understanding The second term completes this foundation with a look at the role of marketing, accounting and operations management. It also addresses the broader issues of corporate governance and social responsibility, a crucial part of any modern manager’s understanding. The second term includes two elective courses, allowing you to develop your interests in specific areas.

During this term we ask students to undertake their Entrepreneurship Project, the production of a complete business plan suitable for presentation to venture capitalists.

Choose your own direction In the second and third terms we offer you the chance to explore your personal interests through a series of electives. These are often taught by visiting experts or by faculty in association with practitioners, bringing together academic rigour and hands-on expertise. The wide variety of courses on offer gives you the chance to develop yourself in preparation for a post-MBA career.

During the summer, there are a wide range of options available to you. Most students pursue a Strategic Consulting Project, working on a business-critical assignment with a corporate client. Alternatively there is the option of undertaking further elective courses or an Individual Academic Thesis potentially in combination with an internship.

Consolidate your learning The MBA course culminates in September with a short course designed to act as a capstone to the whole programme. The capstone course challenges students to consider one of the major problems facing business leaders and governments in the twenty-first century.

YOUR COURSE: FLEXIBILITY

At Oxford we expect our applicants to be exceptional, and our course reflects this. We have created one of the most flexible one-year MBA courses available. Designed to give you the foundations to think about business from all perspectives over three terms and two projects, it will develop your knowledge, your critical faculties and your practical skills.

Page 13: Sbs Mba Brochure

In the second and third terms the Oxford MBA gives you the chance to customise your learning experience to meet individual career goals and aspirations. We pride ourselves on the breadth of elective topics we offer. Courses are often taught by academics and industry practitioners working in partnership to ensure that leading edge research is melded with relevant real-life application.

YOUR COURSE: TAILORING YOUR LEARNING

THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD MBA 2010/11

The private equity elective Co-taught by Tim Jenkinson, Professor of Finance at the Saïd Business School, and Humphrey Battcock, a Director of Advent International, the private equity course opens up one of the more complex areas of financial management. Private equity investments are illiquid and hard to value and those who manage them often become engaged in the decision-making of the companies involved, all of which makes practical skills as important as theoretical knowledge.

Assessed through four case studies, two spreadsheet assignments and a group presentation, the course demands that students constantly apply the material they have been presented.

Practical relevance is hard-wired into the course. Humphrey Battcock and I have designed a course that addresses the current issues facing the private equity industry. We wanted to integrate practice and finance principles from the word go. Tim Jenkinson

APPLYING YOUR LEARNING

24/25 24/25

Oxford’s one-year MBA programme places an emphasis on applied learning. As part of this, students have the opportunity to complete two substantial real-world projects. These projects give you an opportunity to take the knowledge and skills you have gained and put them to the test.

Entrepreneurship Project The entrepreneurship course and project challenges students to develop a complete business plan and present it to a panel of invited venture capitalists and other practitioners. If you already run a business this is a great chance to develop new products or business models in a safe environment.

Completed plans must be attractive to the professional investor. The numbers must add up, patents must be in place, the competition must have been understood and a winning strategy developed. It is often said that investors care more about the management than the plan – in this case the management will be you.

Strategic Consulting Project Working in teams, most students undertake an eight-week consulting project for a corporate sponsor. Projects take place all over the world and for all kinds of companies. We ask you to bring your own contacts and networking skills into play to develop exciting projects. Indeed, if there is a company you have always wanted to work for, undertaking a Strategic Consulting Project for them is sure to get you noticed. The School also sources projects and builds relationships with corporate sponsors.

The Strategic Consulting Project will demand that you use all the skills you have developed during the MBA. Teams have worked with a wide range of companies, charities, non-profits, and start-ups. Projects take place all over the world and for all kinds of companies. Corporate sponsors will typically meet a team’s living and travel expenses on overseas assignments. Conversely, several consulting projects are undertaken for non-profit organisations where students may have to defray the costs themselves.

Oxford University has a strong track record in innovation with 44 spinout companies creating 1,500 jobs. Saïd Business School has been highly influential in developing interaction between businesses and the University, and in creating entrepreneurs and networks. Against this background, entrepreneurship permeates our MBA programme with courses including private equity, entrepreneurial finance, social entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurship in technological ventures. In addition, entrepreneurial students benefit from completing the entrepreneurship project.

Role Models Saïd Business School regularly hosts guest lectures by entrepreneurs. Recent speakers have included: Lord Karan Bilimoria, founder and chairman, Cobra Beer; James Caan, CEO, Hamilton Bradshaw; Julie Meyer, founder and CEO, Ariadne Capital; and many others.

Oxford Entrepreneurs a 4,500-strong society, encourages students from any school of Oxford University to experiment with ideas and start companies. While the society has only existed since 2002, over 120 members have formed companies. Some recent examples include Groupspaces, Blueventures, YouNoodle, and Accademia.edu – all of which have received significant investment and are growing fast.

The Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship The Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship was launched in 2003 at the Saïd Business School, Oxford University, to promote the advancement of social entrepreneurship worldwide. It was created with a donation of £4.44 million by the Skoll Foundation. The Centre nurtures tomorrow’s social entrepreneurs by providing five Skoll MBA Scholarships in Social Entrepreneurship each year.

Oxford Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation brings together innovators from across the world, from Silicon Valley and India, as well as the 2,000 high-tech companies based around Oxford, that form part of the innovation system centred on the School.

Saïd Business School Venture Fund The idea for establishing the Saïd Business School Venture Fund came from Mr David Bonderman and Sir Philip Green during a private equity event at the School, when they generously created the £1m fund. The purpose is to finance the best entrepreneurial ideas from the School’s students and to serve the education of the School’s students in research, due-diligence and monitoring activity associated with investing in early stage businesses.

Oxford Private Equity Network The Oxford Private Equity Network connects Oxford alumni working in the private equity area – in private equity firms, investment banks, law practices and management consulting firms – to allow students to learn about the industry. This is the first university-wide private equity network in Europe and has a high-level advisory board consisting of senior private equity practitioners, Saïd Business School faculty, Oxford alumni and Oxford students.
