HYLTON PERFORMING ARTS CENTERAt George Mason University | Manassas, Virginia
COOPERATIONThree distinct public institutions, (George Mason University, City of Manassas, and Prince William County) armed with a far-reaching vision and persistence, have brought about a singular performing arts facility that meets the needs of a multitude of civic and academic constituents. Committed to creating a place special to all, meetings were held throughout the entire process with university personnel and community arts groups to ensure that the final outcome would meet the needs of all the participants. Now, truly a landmark, the building is a key component in the formation of a cultural hub in the region.
INTIMACYThe opera-style performance hall represents a benchmark in modern theater design in terms of compact layout and audience interaction. The tight horseshoe shape and three vertical tiers of boxes create a setting in which no seat is farther than 90 feet from the proscenium. The intimate space offers a place where every performance, no mat-ter the content or style, allows the audience to be fully immersed in the action. The ‘family boxes’ reinvent tradi-tional seating that accommodates from 2 to 59 people and are structured to encourage the attendance of families with children and varied student groups.

View from Corpus Christi Bay
FLEXIBLEAlternately intimate and grand, the 1,500-seat hall allows for diverse seating options to accommodate teaching needs as well as performances by professional musical groups. A three-level seating configuration promotes intimacy when the room is not full. Two balconies entirely surround the musicians with the lower balcony doubling as choir seating. Variable acoustic curtains allow the room to be tuned for different musical performances making them adaptable to a variety of presentation formats.
DESTINATIONDramatically placed on the edge of Corpus Christi Bay, the building frames majestic views of the Gulf of Mexico and downtown. The glass-enclosed lobby glows like a jewel box in the dark, marking the center as a nexus for cultural activ-ity and creative expression in the community. Dramatic forms, coupled with a vivid palette of materials, highlight the facility’s role in cultivating an atmosphere of artistic exuberance. The crystal clear acoustics of the warm, inviting interiors position the center as the most sought-after performance venue in the region.

SUSTAINABILITYBathed in natural northern light, the studios’ high ceilings
and windows allow users to take full advantage of passive
ventilation and day-lighting strategies. Warehouse-style
gallery spaces allow for a multitude of programming options
and anticipate future uses. Sensitive to its occupants’
well-being, a toxin-free printmaking studio was specially
designed to maintain a healthy atmosphere. A facility that
exists harmoniously with its natural surroundings, the use of
durable, recycled building materials, and increased water
efficiency, promotes responsible stewardship of the
environment.
INNOVATIONEager to cultivate opportunities for cross-disciplinary interactions, various artistic programs at the university, in conjunction with a summer theater festival, sought a build-ing that fostered an atmosphere of shared learning and experimentation. Flexible and easily adaptable, the center breaks down learning barriers and enhances the dynamism of collaborative efforts between performers, playwrights, visual artists, and production designers. The building inspires creative inquiry and is the manifestation of a successful public-private joint initiative, forming the heart of cultural production in the oldest community in West Virginia.
