    for you, grandpa ? .. asked the bird. "Not a soul." "You should not be

    doing such wo rk at your age," said t he bird. "From now on I will bring you

    a big fish every evening. You can sell it an d live in comfort ." True t o her

    wor d, t he bird began t o drop a large fish at his doorstep every evening. All

    t hat t he fisherman had to d o was take it t o t he market and sell it. As bigfish w ere in great demand, he w as soon rolling in money. He bough t a

    cottage near the sea, with a garden around it and engaged a servant to

    cook for h im. His wife h ad died some years earlier. He had decided t o marry

    again and began to look for a suit able woman.

    One day he heard t he royal court ier make an announ cement . Our king has

    new s of a great bird called Kaha," said t he court ier. "Whoever can give

    information about t his bird and help catch it, w ill be reward ed wit h half

    t he gold in the royal t reasury and half t he kingdom !" The fisherman was

    sorely tempt ed by t he reward. Half t he kingdom would make him a prince!

    "Why does the king want t he bird ?" he asked. "He has lost his sight,"

    explained t he court ier. "A wise man has advised him t o bat he his eyes with

    t he blood of Kaha. Do you know where she can be foun d ? .. "No ... 1

    bird, t he fisherman could not give a coherent reply. The court ier, sensing

    t hat he knew someting about t he bird, informed t he king. The king had

    him brought to the palace.

    "If you have information about th e bird, t ell me," urged the king. "I will

    rew ard you hand somely and if you help cat ch her, I w ill personally crow n

    you king of half my domain." "I w ill get t he bird for you,"cried th e

    fisherman, suddenly making up h is mind. "But Kaha is st rong. I w ill need

    help." The king sent a dozen soldiers with him. That evening when t he bird

    came with t he fish, t he fisherman called out to her to w ait. "You drop t he

    fish and go and I never get a chance to th ank you for all t hat you've done

    for me, " he said. "Today I h ave laid out a feast fo r you inside. Please alight

    and come in." Kaha was reluctant t o accept t he invit ation but t he

    fisherman pleaded so earnestly t hat she finally gave in, and alight ed. The

    moment she was on th e ground, t he fisherman grabbed one of her legs

    and shout ed t o t he soldiers hiding in his house to come out. They rushed

    t o his aid but t heir combined effort could not keep Kaha down.

    She rose int o t he air with th e fisherman still clinging ont o her leg. By the

    t ime he realised he w as being carried aw ay, t he fisherman w as too high in

    t he air to let g o. He hung o n grimly, and neith er he nor Kaha were ever

    seen again.

    PROSE- CUTED. He w as a very selfish Giant . The poor children h&d now ,

    nowhere to play. They t ried t o play on the road, Bank Clerk 2011/ 37 b ut

    t he road w as very dust y and full of stones, and they did not like it. On

    t heir way back from school, th ey used t o w ander around t he high w all and

    remember the good t imes.

    Then came spring, an d all over the country there were litt le blossoms and

    lit t le birds. Only in t he garden of t he Selfish Giant it w as st ill wint er. The

    birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children and t he t rees

    forgot to blossom. The only people who w ere pleased were the snow and

    t he frost. "Spring has forgot t en t his garden," t hey cried, "so w e w ill livehere all th e year round." I cannot understand w hy t he spring is so late in

    coming," said t he selfish Giant, as he sat at t he window and looked out at

    his cold wh ite garden, "I hope t here will be a change in t he weat her." But

    t he spring never came, nor did th e summer. The autu mn gave golden fruit

    t o every garden, but t o t he Giant's garden she gave none. "He was too

    selfish," she said. So it w as always wint er t here.

    One morning t he Giant was lying awake in bed when h e heard t he birds

    singing . "I believe the spring has come at last," said the Giant , and he

    jumped out o f bed and looked out. He saw the most w onderful sight.

    Through t he lit t le hole in the wall the children had crept in, and t hey were

    sitt ing on t he branches of t he t rees. On every t ree th ere was a child. The

    birds were flying about and t wit t ering wit h delight , and the flowers were

    looking up t hrough t he green grass and laughing. I t was a lovely scene

    however, in one corner it was still winter. It was the farthest corner of thegarden, and in it was standing a litt le boy. He was so small that he could

    not reach t he branches of t he t ree, and he w as wand ering all around it

    crying bitt erly. The Giant's heart melt ed as he looked out . "How selfish I

    have been '" he said, "now I kno w w hy spring would not come here. I w ill

    put that poor little boy on the t op of t he tree, and then I w ill knock down

    t he w all, and my garden shall be the children's play-ground for ever and

    ever." He was really sorry for w hat he had do ne.
