Dirt Is Gold For Young Rider

Have you ever done anything in front of 80,000 people? Well, 8-year-old Carson Wood has, and with style.

In February, Wood competed in a supercross race sponsored by Monster Energy Drinks in the AT&T stadium in Arlington, Texas. He won a qualifying race on live television, a feat which has propelled him into the Monster Energy Cup’s KTM Junior Challenge in Las Vegas on Oct. 13.

Carson will be competing against other junior racers, ages 7 and 8, who have won at one of 10 select qualifying races sponsored by Monster. The winner will receive a KTM 50 SX bike.

It might be nerve-wracking to most parents to

watch their child perform the daredevil-ish acts Carson specializes in, but his parents and grandparents are nothing but supportive and proud of his accomplishments in the dirt bike racing world.

“It’s an adrenaline rush to say the least. But it’s also really exciting at the same time,” said Carson’s mom, Jaclin Young.

Even closer on Carson’s calendar is Monday’s 37th annual Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship hosted at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

Two years ago, as a six-year-old, Carson qualified for the same race for the first time and finished 12th in his age class. After just missing out in qualifying for the 2017 race, Carson is back and as ready as ever to return to Loretta Lynn’s event and snag a title.

A rising third-grader, Carson practices nearly every day and competes in about 60 races annually to keep his motocross skills among the best in the nation. He travels with his parents and other family members across the country to race, and also practices at local tracks in Wildwood, Dade City or Tampa. With his home base in Zephyrhills, Carson is home-schooled in order to travel and fully commit to racing.

“They take him all over the place for him to get more experience at different places so he’s not used to just one track,” said Carson’s grandmother, Patricia Young.

In his first appearance at Loretta Lynn’s, Carson competed solely in the 50 cc 4 to 6-year-old class. This time around he will be competing in two events – the 50 cc 7 to 8-year-old class, and 65 cc 7 to 9-year-old class, racing on a 2018 KTM 50 and a 2018 Husqvarna 65.

More than 22,000 racers went to qualifying regional races to earn one of only 1,446 positions. Carson was able to secure two of those 1,446 spots.

“We’re super excited. He is super excited. He is more ready now, I think, to win,” said Carson’s mom.

Young said her son is beyond excited to return to such a big stage and for the chance to win a national title.

“He doesn’t really get very nervous. He’s just always very ready and very focused,” she said.

Carson trains with Spyder MX, his main sponsor, in Wildwood. His other two main sponsors are 100% goggles and Woods Custom Buildings.

Carson, his parents, and both sets of grandparents will be travelling to Tennessee this Saturday with races beginning Monday.

“He has the potential to finish at a very high level, especially for someone his age in both classes,” said Patricia Young of the upcoming race. “I think its outstanding.”

The race at Loretta Lynn’s will be accessible to watch live on racertv.com with events and races concluding on Aug. 4.

For Carson, dirt bike racing runs in the family and he is following in the footsteps of his father, Christopher Wood, and three uncles – all of whom qualified for Loretta Lynn’s National at some point in their racing career.

The deal for Carson was he could get a dirt bike for his fifth birthday if he could ride a bike without training wheels. He accomplished that feat two weeks before his fifth birthday party.

Reporter Dave Walters also contributed to this article.

trophy racing in Daytona. As he grew older, he transitioned into Dirt Late Model cars. He has since participated in three races in his Late Model Chevrolet both in and out of state.

“I go all over the country. I’ve been all over Florida, Georgia, Alabama,” said Smith. “Really just anywhere that I can find a good race.”

When he’s not traveling and tearing up the track Brenden also enjoys fishing, a stark contrast from the high-speed world of racing. He also buckles down and studies hard to maintain his A-B honor roll status at the East Pasco Adventist Academy. He hopes to someday become a mechanical engineer so he can take his

love of cars one step further by building them himself.

“Brenden’s job is to maintain his grades, and the racing is his reward,” said Kim Smith, Brenden’s mom. “He definitely earns getting to race.”

Even racing against older and more experienced competition, and at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour, Smith says he absolutely has no fear. He’s always eager to get back to the track and put the pedal to the metal.

“It can be pretty intimidating sometimes,” said Brenden. “But you’ve just got to keep your head on straight and don’t think about it so much. You have to race your own race.”

SLU Adds 21st Intercollegiate Sport

Saint Leo University President Jeffrey D. Senese and Director of Athletics Francis X. Reidy announced the addition of acrobatics and tumbling to Saint Leo University’s intercollegiate athletics program. The Lions will begin competition in 2020, and a nationwide search for the program’s inaugural head coach is underway.

Acrobatics & Tumbling, a discipline of USA Gymnastics, is the evolution of different forms of gymnastics and involves tumbling, tosses, acrobatic lifts, and pyramids. Teams participate in head-to-head competition and are scored in six events, including compulsory, acro, pyramid, toss, tumbling, and team.

“Saint Leo continues to offer more students with opportunities to enhance their academic journey with us by providing high level intercollegiate athletic experiences,” Reidy said. “This is an emerging sport, and we look forward to being the first university in Florida to join this exciting competitive sport.”

One of the fastest growing sports among NCAA institutions, acrobatics and tumbling will be the 21st intercollegiate sport offered at Saint Leo and is the 12th offering in the women’s program. Since 2016, 11 institutions spanning the country have added acrobatics and tumbling, nearly doubling the number of programs to offer the sport.

“I am pleased for Saint Leo University to be among the few and first NCAA Division II colleges to offer acrobatics and tumbling as a competitive sport,” Senese said. “The addition will make

Saint Leo an attractive option for women gymnasts who want to continue to compete at the collegiate level.”

More than 300 student-athletes competed in acrobatics and tumbling at the collegiate varsity level during the 2017 season. Current Division II members of NCATA include Alderson-Broaddus; Azusa Pacific; Belmont Abbey; Converse; Davis & Elkins; Erskine; Fairmont State; Gannon; Glenville State; Hawaii-Pacific; King; Limestone; Urbana; West Liberty; and West Virginia Wesleyan. Saint Leo is the 16th Division II school – and 25th nationally – to sponsor the sport.

The National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA), which serves as the national governing body, is working with the NCAA staff and the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics to have Acrobatics & Tumbling sanctioned as an emerging sport. Currently, all events are sanctioned through USA Gymnastics.

The competition season takes place between February and April with each team allowed to compete in a minimum of six contests and a maximum of 14. The NCATA National Championships are held annually in April on an NCATA-member campus with event and team championships.

“Saint Leo’s announcement adds to the recent program additions in the southeast region,” said NCATA Executive Director Janell Cook. “This region, and the state of Florida within it, is one of the largest recruiting regions for potential student-athletes in acrobatics and tumbling.”

Garden Club Dedicates Historical OrnamentThe 2017 Dade City Garden Club ornament is the

24th in their series of historical ornaments and featured the Florida Telephone Corporations Building. Currently, the building houses A Matter of Taste restaurant.

Through the years the building has housed a telephone exchange and switchboard, judge’s chambers, a law office, a title company, and several restaurants

On Dec. 16, Carole and Jim Hendry celebrated their 20th anniversary of owning A Matter of Taste.

The Dade City Garden Club appreciates the support Jim and Carole have given the club over the years. They have allowed the club to use their large front window to advertise flower shows, club events, and to display the annual holiday ornaments.

The Garden Club’s Magnolia Circle presented the couple with a framed 2017 ornament which they currently display in their window. During the 2018 National Garden Week in June, the Garden Club presented the Hendrys with a Certificate of Appreciation and added a floral display to their front window beside the ornament depicting their historic Dade City building.

The building is included in “The Historic Places of Pasco County” by the Pasco County Historical Preservation Committee.

In 1925, telephone pioneer Otto Wettstein, Jr. constructed the two story Mediterranean Revival building on Seventh Street in downtown Dade City to house the overloaded telephone exchange located in Griffin’s drug store.

The building’s second story was designed to house the telephone company’s main switchboard and its business offices and the bottom floor were planned to provide rental space. The expanding telephone company outgrew the building and moved their headquarters to Ocala in 1973.

In 1990, Ford Sterns opened two restaurants in the building. Upstairs, he offered finer dining called Fords on Top and downstairs was the café he named A Matter of Taste.

Peter and Helen Panagakis bought the restaurant and renamed the upstairs room Peter on Top but the downstairs dining remained A Matter of Taste.

In 1997, Carole and Jim Hendry bought the restaurant. They called the upstairs room “Upper Room” in honor of the room in the David’s Tomb Compound in Jerusalem, traditionally held to be the site of the Last Supper. They kept the name A Matter of Taste.

The Dade City Garden Club ornaments are a gratifying fundraiser for the club as they help preserve historic elements in the community; some have even become collector’s items.

The club appreciates the community’s support of the annual historic ornament sales. There is a limited supply of the “Florida Telephone Corporation Building/A Matter of Taste Restaurant” ornaments available at the Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce, 14112 Eighth St., for $22 payable by check only to The Dade City Garden Club.

Dade City Garden Club President Debbie Murphy presents Jim and Carole Hendry with a certificate of appreciation.

The 2017 historical ornament by the Dade City Garden Club is still available for purchase at the Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce.

Historian Visits East Pasco

The bi-monthly meeting of the Pasco County Historical Society was held on Saturday at the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village. This month’s guest speaker was Jeff Miller, who discussed Pasco County from the 1800s to today via the origins of the names of the towns appearing on historical maps.

Miller has worked for more than 20 years on a website devoted to the history of Pasco County at fivay.org. He is on the board of the West Pasco Historical Society and has been honored

by the Pasco County School Board and the Pasco County Commission for his historical work and website.

Meetings are always free and open to the public to attend. A covered-dish dinner precedes the program and visitors are encouraged to bring something special to share.

Contact Madonna Wise at (813) 782-0246, (813) 469-8627 or [email protected] for information on the society and upcoming meetings.
