Serving God’s People for 57 Years 1961—2018
FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JULY 8, 2018 2 SAINT BERNARD
Mark begins a new theme in his gospel with today’s reading that will be central to his story of Jesus: the
obtuseness of people to the power and authority of Jesus. The people of Jesus’ own hometown reject his message. They consider Jesus too much “one of them” to be taken seriously. They are too obsessed with superficialities-occupation, ancestry, origins-to realize the presence of God in their midst and to allow themselves to be affected by that presence. Jesus redefines the meaning of authority as understood by his kinfolk: Jesus’ authority is not derived from his ability to manipulate the fears, suspicions, apathy, or ignorance of those around him but from the spirit of mercy, justice, and compassion that he is able to call forth from them. The authority his hearers see in Jesus is rooted in wisdom that comes from experience and a lived commitment to act justly and selflessly.

“As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking say to me, ‘Son of man, I am sending you…’” EZEKIEL 2:2-3
God asks each of us to do some special work for Him. He gives us the resources we need to do His work. However, do we listen to God when He calls? Do we get up on our feet and use our talent to do the work He asks of us? Remember, God doesn’t call the equipped, he equips the called.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a process by which a person prepares to become a
member of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is one of inquiry, evangelization, prayer, study and
conversion, leading to one’s entrance into the church through Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. RCIA
welcomes the unbaptized as well as those baptized in other Christian traditions. RCIA also welcomes those who have been baptized Catholic but who have not
completed their sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation.
Anyone who is interested in participating in this program is asked to call the Rectory NOW and speak to
Deacon Frank.
