circumnavigatingthewholeworld.Perhapsyourdreamsincludeasailalongthe

eastcoastofAmerica,acircumnavigationoftheUKortocruisetheMediterranean

foraseason.MaybeyouwanttopickupaboatinCroatia,sailitacrosstheAtlantic

OceanandfinishupwithaseasonintheCaribbean.Andsure,perhapsyoudowant

tocircletheglobe–whynot!?

Theoptionsonwheretosail,orwhattodoonceyou’reready,areendless.

Basedonthreeyearsworthofemails,thatI’vereceivedfrommySailingBritican.com

blogreaders,I’dhavetosaythatveryfewpeoplehaveaskedmewheretosail.

ThemostpopularquestionIget,however,ishowtofundasailingtriporhowto

makemoneywhilealsoenjoyingasailingadventure?Inotherwords,whatoptions

areavailableforlivingthedreamANDmakingmoneytoenjoylivingthedream.

Sure,youcanwaituntilyoupossiblywinthelottery,receiveanunexpected

inheritancefromalonglostrelativeorevenwaituntilyouretiretoenjoythe

proceedsofyourpension.

Or,youcanstartthinkingaboutalternativesthatwillallowyoutogetonthewater

soonerratherthanlater.

AndI’mnottalkingaboutdevisingplansto‘sailonashoestring’!

Sure,youcanliveoffofcannedbeans,onlysailtofreeanchoragesandlimityour

land-basedexcursionsbutwhydothatifyoudon’thaveto?Ifyou’regoingtolive

thedream,wouldn’tyouratherfindawaytoreallylivethedream(unless,ofcourse,

yourdreamistosailona200’yachtwithcrewattendingtoyoureveryneed).


I’mtalkingaboutbeingrealistichere.I’mtalkingaboutkeepingyourcurrentquality

oflife,oryourcurrentstandards,andthenapplyingthemtolivingandsailing

aroundonboat.

AndwhoamItowriteaboutallthis?Well…in2013myhusbandandIsold

everythingwehad,purchasedarentalproperty,boughttheboatandsailedintothe

sunset.Whilesailingwefoundavarietyofwaystomakeanincome–somewedid

(andstilldo)ourselvesandothersarewhatwelearnedfrompeoplethatwecrossed

pathswith.

Fromourperspectivewedidn’twanttowaituntilwewereretired.Wewereafraid

thatifwewaitedourbodiesorourmindsmightnotbeupforthechallenge.

Furthermore,ourplansmadesenseinrelationtoourdaughter,Sienna–weleftland

whenshewasthreeyearsold.

So…bytheendofthisshortguidemyhopeisthatyou’llgetsomedefinitiveideasor,

attheveryleast,feelasparkofpossibility.Therearethousandsofnormalevery-day

peopleandfamiliescurrentlysailingaroundtheworld.Iftheydiscoveredawayto

Theretendstobetwomaingroupsofsailingtravelers.

NotethatI’mgoingtosetasidethepeoplethatbuyaboatonlytositonit.

Unfortunately,thelargestproportionofboatownersdon’tactuallyusethem.Who

knowswhy?Perhapsthey’retooscaredtopulloutoftheslip.

Anyway…thefirstgrouparepeoplethatwanttoplanatriporanadventure.

Therewillbeasettimeframe,objectivesandafinishdate.Insomecasesit’sa

bucketlistthingwhereagoalwillbeachieved.Inothercases,it’saveryorganized

plantogoonatripofalifetime.Ineithercase,there’sanenddate.


Byhavinganenddate,it’seasiertocomeupwithideastogenerateanincome.

Often,alargeportionofmoneycanbesaved;anassetlikeahomecanbeputupfor

rent(tocreatemonthlyincome)andit’sevenpossibleforaremoteworkingoption

tobenegotiated.

Forexample,whilestayingatamarinainSicilywehadneighborsthatsailedaround

theMediterraneanextensivelyforacoupleyears.Onewasapoliceofficerandthe

otherwasacomputerprogrammer–bothintheirearly30’s.Thepoliceofficertook

unpaidleavewiththepromiseofhisjobbackuponreturn.Thesoftware

programmercontinuedworkingbutonareducedbasis.Theprogrammersetupa

remoteworksituationsothatshecouldworkfromanylocationsolongastherewas

agoodInternetconnection.

Whilesailingaroundthecoupleputtheirhouseupforrentearninganicelittle

reoccurringincomefromtenants.Thepoliceofficergeneratedfreemealsbydoing

jobsforotherboatiesandtheprogrammercontinuedtogetpaid.

Anotherexampleisacouplethattooktimeoffafterretiringfromtheirpostsinthe

military.Stillintheir40’sandtransitioningfromthemilitarytothecivilianarena,

thecoupletookayearoff.TheduopurchasedaboatintheMediterranean,sailed

acrosstheAtlantic,cruisedtheCaribbeanandthenlefttheboatinNorthCarolina

preparingforittosell.Thecrewconsistedofmom,dadandthreekidsagednineto

fourteen.Itwasthefamilytripthatthechildrenwilltalkaboutforeverandthe

parentswillthink,‘wehavenoregrets…’Thecouplesavedup,puttheirhouseupfor

rentandcashedinonsomeinvestmentstofundthetrip.

Insomecases,interestingly,acoupleorfamilymightheadouttoseaforayearor

twoandmanyyearslaterthey’restillgoing.Oneofmyfavoritesayingsis,‘thereare

norules.’Whenwemetcruisingveterans,JimandCarol,inCorfu,GreeceIasked,

‘what’syourplan?’Carolexplainedthattheyplanedonspendingthreeyearstogo

aroundtheworld.


Todate,thecoupleisonyear15andwillbecompletingatheirfullcircumnavigation

soon.NeitherJimnorCarolhasanyintentionofheadingbacktolandanytimesoon.

Soletmecomeontothesecondgroupofpeople-thosethatwanttohopina

boat,sailintothesunsetandlivebytheseatoftheirpants.

Errr…well,notquitelivebytheseatoftheirpants.Theywantabitofreassurance.

Theywantabitofsecurity…

Thisiswheremyfamilyandmefitin.Wesetoffwithsomesavingsinthebankanda

coupleofincomestreamstocontributetoourmonthlycashflow.Oursavingswould

lastusforacoupleyears,ifwedidn’tgocrazy,andtheideawastofindwaysof

makingmoneythatwouldsupersedetheneedtodraindownourchild’sfuture

collegefund.

AsImentionedearlier,we’vemetloadsofpeoplelikeus.It’samazinghowmany

peoplearebraveenoughtosay,‘Screwit…let’sdoit.’Myhusband,Simon,andIhave

methundredsofcouplesandfamiliesthathavefoundavarietyofwaystolivethe

dream.Heck–ifthere’sawill,there’saway!

So…withthatintroductionpleaseallowmetolistsomeofthevariouswaysof

makingmoneywhilesailingaroundtheworld.Thesewillworkforjourneyspecific

boatersandthosethatjustwanttoheadouttoseaindefinitely.

ThebestbitofadviceIcanofferistostartplanningANDtakingactionnow,well

beforeyou’rereadytoleave.Peoplethatarecurrentlyoutonthesea,livingtheir

dream,didnotmakethingsmaterializeovernight.Ittakessmallactionseveryday

withaconsistentfocusonanendgoalthatallowsdreamstocometrue.
