INSPECTION, TESTING AND MAINTENANCE OF WIRE ROPE SLINGS, INSPECTION, TESTING AND RECORD-KEEPING
1.All wire rope slings must have a safety factor of 5.1.
2.Wire rope slings coming into the system shall be subjected to a proof load test by the manufacturer. The safe working load (SWL) must be clearly marked on each sling, either by staming or tagging. A certificate verifying that a proof load test was made, and specifying the SWL, must be completed and provided by the manufacturer.
3.All user organizations will maintain a register containing the following information:
(a)Sling ID number, date in service and safe working load as stated on the proof load certificate.
4.Tables showing the safe working load rated capacities of slings, must be posted in a suitable location to afford easy reference for those employees who use slings.
5.All slings shall be visually examined for damage or defects, before and after use.
6.Slings shall be stored in an area where they will not be damaged by extreme heat, moisture, corrosion, kinking or equipment and vehicles.
7.All slings shall be inspected at least once in a 6-month period in compliance with ANSI standard B30-9. The inspection shall be performed by a competent person designated by the Crane and Elevator Unit of the S.A. Projects Inspection Division, Engineering Service Organization.
8.Full details of each periodic inspection carried out by the designated inspector, shall be recorded in the register as specified in Part 3 of this bulletin.
9.Any sling found to be damaged or defective will be immediately removed from service and destroyed to prevent further use. The sling's removal from service shall be recorded in the register maintained by the user.
