How do you design unplanned structures?

Our current project focuses on the use of rapid protyping technology in concert with traditional architectural design methods to develop a design for an aggregat-ing space frame-type structure. Using parametrics, we investigate how variation and further development can be introduced to the system and eventually calibrate its performance to a specifi c site. Blog:

Inspired by Malcom Gladwell’s musings about the life of sidewalks in New York, the cultural offi ce develops programmatic boundaries as spaces of “serendipitous” interaction between the tenants and gen-eral public who use the building. Pedestrian, bike, and automobile, navigate a generous vertical public space anchored by library, cafe, assembly, and exhibition programmes.

In response to a project brief calling for the design of a “sustainable” eco house, our strategy was to achieve material efficiency through the design of a repeatitive base structural module. Ultimately, the house is constructed of plywood compo-nents, optimized to be laser-cut from 4’x8’ plywood sheets to minimize material wastage and allow for assembly by unskilled workers.

The installation is acomplished through the fabrication and assem-bly of over 16,000 identical, interlocking, laser-cut, corragated plas-tic components. Using video projection and the resultant structure create the space of Dedalus’s imagination for an audience of 600 people.

SARGASSO FIELD Installation: Brussels 2009, Copenhagen 2009 w/ Phillip Beasley, CITA

Over the course of a 20-day workshop at the Royal Acacademy of Fine Art, in Copenhagen, we produced “Sargasso Field”; a project which speculates an architecture of mechanical empa-thy. Deployed are strategies of component-based systems, mechanics, and digital computation, to approximate a diverse living ecology.

In September 2009, the work was exhibited at the Pluto electronic musical festival in Brussels. In November 2009, the project returned to Copen-hagen as a central piece in an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Fine Art, running simotane-ously with the UN Climate Change Summit.

TWO FOLD; Nuit Blanche Toronto 2009 Installation Toronto, Ontario, 2009

WINNER, NUIT BLANCHE PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD $5000

Our proposal looks at “gray” urban space as a site of potential intervention within the city.To create an architecture of confrontation and response, we a constructed a canopy of 30,000 bamboo sticks uplit with user-controlled LED panels.
