Gloria typed seven of the nine charts in this Newsletter and she has typed more which we will publish in the future. You will note two of the charts are from an out-of-state member. Hopefully more of our "distant cousinsw will send in their chart so we can get a look at some material we do not readily have available in our neighborhood.

Please take a good look at all of these charts. Note any lines you share in common. Also, note family names in the same generation, they may be brothers or sisters of one of your ancestors. If you find you share an ancestor, or if you think you may share a line, please call or write the person who compiled the chart and share whatever material you may have. And don't forget the compiler probably has more material they couldn't fit on the chart. Their address and phone number will be in your previous directory issue of the Newsletter.

FREE South Carolina County Maps for Genealogists by~ames W. Green I11 of Fairfield Chapter, SCGS

County maps are used by genealogists to find ancestors' land and hopefully their tombstones. Finding the land leads you to the current land owner who may be a kinsman with more family papers or he may know where living members of your family live and they may have family papers. Furthermore, perhaps your ancestor's house or at least his well still remains which is biographical info -- great for fleshing out an ancestor. Knowing the exact location of the land allows you to get tax maps showing how the land in the area is divided which is useful1 in tracing the title of that and adjacent land to find early relatives and in-laws. Locating the land also helps you decide which church they might have attended and which church records you therefore want to try to locate and which church graveyards to check.

In SC the only thing the genealogist has to use to locate the land is the deeds (and grants) and all the deed will say is the county and creek on which the land is located. Thus county maps are used by the genealogist to locate the creek then go to the area and inquire to find the actual tract. Finding the creek puts you in the area of a few churches of which you can determine those old enough to have been your ancestor's church then try to locate its records and visit its graveyard. The maps are useful in traveling to the graveyard and the tract of land when you visit the area and for receiving directions from others as to where kinsmen live or where abandoned graveyards are located.

County maps may be purchased from the SC Highway Department for 75C each plus $1 handling charge for orders under $5 ($1.50 handling for orders of $5- $15 and 10% for orders over $15), BUT the maps for over half of the counties can be had for FREE from the SC ~ i l a f e and Marine Resources Department we give these away at Chapter meetings, but do not mail them since you can order them at no cost from the SC Wildlife and Marine Resources Department, P.O. Box 167, Columbia, SC 29202.

But i f you a r e l i k e most of u s you have l o t s of p a p e r s and m a t e r i a l t h a t don't l e n d themselves t o e a s y s t o r a g e o u t s i d e t h e home. What I ' v e done may no t be t h e b e s t s o l u t i o n , b u t it was cheap and i t does g i v e me some peace of mind.

I went t o t h e S a l v a t i o n Army and bought a good, s e r v i c e a b l e , i f n o t a v e r y p r e t t y , s u i t c a s e f o r t h e grand sum of on ly $4. (The S a l v a t i o n Army always h a s l o t s of t h o s e o l d s u i t c a s e s s i t t i n g i n some o u t of t h e way p l a c e . ) Then, p e r i o d i c a l l y , I make a copy of my p a p e r s and p u t it i n t h e s u i t c a s e . I keep t h e s u i t c a s e r i g h t under my bed. That way, even i n t h e e v e n t of f i r e , I have a d u p l i c a t i o n of my work r i g h t a t hand. A l l I ' v e g o t t o do is r e a c h under t h e bed and make a run f o r i t .
