Sales expert warns companies not toscrimp on training for older employeesOlder workers are being routinely ignored byemployers when it comes to training, warns aleading international sales training organisa-tion - despite more retirees being employedthan ever before.
The observations of Doug Tucker, manag-ing director of Sales Commando, are basedon the company’s extensive experiences withmajor employers in the UK, Europe, the Mid-dle East and the US.
Doug said: “More and more people are work-ing beyond the current ages of retirement.
“This is a universal trend that’s set to con-tinue as the age of retirement rises in tandemwith increasing life expectancy.
“However, what I find mystifying is thatolder workers are consistently over lookedin favour of young employees when trainingprovision is considered.
“My team and I have noticed that it is notuncommon for older people to be routinelyoverlooked – purely, it can be assumed, asthere are no other variables, because of their
age – if there are a limited number of train-ing places.
“This type of discrimination is depress-ingly commonplace.”
Figures from both sides of the Atlantic backup the trend of older workers.
In the UK, 300,000 people aged 70 or over arestill working.
In fact, in the UK alone, 1.54 million peopleat pension age and above are in work, com-pared to 753,000 in 1993.
And these figures are reflected across Eu-rope and America.
Given these numbers, and the paucity ofsales training for those of a more mature age,Doug Tucker is adamant that many firms’sales training policies need to be urgentlyrevised.
“The assumption that older people bringwisdom and experience to a sales role andtherefore need no training is a fundamentalflaw in the HR training policies of too manycompanies.
“Or perhaps it is a mindset that older work-ers will typically not be with the company forthe medium to longer-term.
“ Therefore they are not worth the traininginvestment.
“Either way, we’re all working in an ever-changing sales arena that requires evolution-ary sales training.
“And that’s for everybody, at every age.”Doug believes that the consequences of not
providing sales training to those of retire-ment age and over will have a devastatingeffect on fiscal bottom lines.
And yet the answer is simple.“We’re not teaching old dogs new tricks
here.“Instead, what I’m suggesting is that we
refine experiences and adapt sales techniquesto build on the many attributes older workersbring to a company in a sales leadership role.
“The results will not only be individuallybeneficial but corporately profitable.
“And those results can be achieved now.”
