Today you’re going to practice making predictions about the main ideas of a passage and explain your clues. You will read to find information in the text that confirms or departs from a prediction.

Building BackgroundIn the DVD, Daniel said that he thinks

expository text is hard to read because it often has words that he doesn’t know. I agree with him. In fact, I found several words in part 1 of the brochure on the USS Constellation that I did not understand. I wrote them down. I would like you and your partner to see id=f you can figure out what they words mean. They are on page 13 of your Student’s Viewing Guide.

Building Background• Adam, Elinor, Amy, and David are about to

predict what part 2 of the USS Constellation brochure, “Ahoy, Matey!” is mostly about. I’ll bet Psredicto is going to ask you to make predictions too. So turn to part 2 of the brochure on page 15 of your Student’s Viewing Guide. Have your Strategy Cards handy so you’ll remember the clues. You may need some sticky notes, too, in case you run into any unfamiliar words.

Who can tell me about a teammate’s prediction that was different from yours? Did your prediction or your teammate’s prediction come true? How do you know?
