and in the Prayer of Jesusand in the Prayer of Jesus

When our CE Chair and Church Council rep Suzanne Jackson suggested "mindfulness" as a possible theme for this year's faith formation program through our Sunday School, her mother, Linda, quickly added, "And why not for the whole church too?" As I mulled and prayed over this suggestion, along with other thoughts that I had been having about possible topics and themes for our AWE (All Ages Worship Experience) Sunday worship most fourth Sundays of each month, I began to see in new and fresh ways how mindfulness is very evident in Jesus' life and Way as well as in the Lord's Prayer, also sometimes called the Prayer of Jesus.

Mindfulness is defined in a variety of ways by a variety of people. Mindfulness is:

awareness that arises through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally (Jon Kabat-Zinn)keeping your attention alive in the present moment (Thich Nhat Hanh)living in full awareness of the "Naked Now" (Richard Rohr)the practice of paying attention to the present moment with openness andcuriosity (Christine O'Shaughnessy)letting go of taking things for grantedto return to the present momentthe self-regulation of attention with an attitude of curiosity, openness, andacceptance (an accepted operational, scientific definition-for advancing theresearch and practice of mindfulness, Ryan M. Niemiec, Psy.D.,www.psychologytoday.com)

Whether you are a child, youth, young adult, adult, mature adult, or elder; whether you are a novice, an amateur, a seasoned practitioner, or a sage when it comes to mindfulness, being present, walking in the Way of Jesus, or praying the Lord's Prayer, you are invited to learn, experience and practice mindfulness

through a variety of learning, worship and service opportunities offered by East Church this year.

Peace,

Pastor Shelly

Phyllis and Tony also want to share these reflections on the pieces they have created.

The Altar Banners: Meanings and GratitudesThe Altar Banners: Meanings and Gratitudes

With the creation of the dossal designs Phyllis and I want to convey, as the centralmessage, the concept of lifting up. Lifting up of our spirits of love, thankfulness, joyand each other. It's why we come to East Church and what we believe is a large partof our faith. East Church has lifted us up through the hardest of times. Times ofdoubts, fear, and tragedy. Finding our way back to the light through the rains, overhills, beyond the hardships beyond the sky and back to our faith. This is what hasinspired these designs.

The symbols suggest the growth of a tree moving upwards with its twists and turns, and the river that continues to flow but changes. It may stop and start once again. Thesesymbols represent what our lives can be like. We also feed off of the goodness that the earthbrings us, as our own knowledge of life changes and feeds our souls. There may bethe harshness of days to endure but we continue to join together and look forwardand upwards for the peace that can come from being together in this shelter we call East Church.

Another inspiration for us is a song by Jackson Browne, one of our son's early favoritesinger/songwriters, Before the Deluge. It tells of the idealists we are as youths and how some of us lose to the challenges that society can impose on us. One line goes,"Some of us are angry how the earth has been abused." We often struggle to protect the planet. At times we lose this battle but can survive to live after the deluge.

Browne's chorus lifts us from this sad tale, one that we have experienced over and overagain. We come together to pray for the light that shines in the chorus...

Let the music keep our spirits high Let the buildings keep our children dry Let creation reveal its secrets by and by When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky.

The light for us was lost for awhile and it slowly has come back in our lives. Itmay be a little dimmer than before but it still lights the way. It's with thanks toEast Church for the many kindnesses and generosity that helped bring this lightback. Of course, to our wonderful Pastor Shelly and her lovely Beth. Without youto lead the way we could not have found the path.

We dedicate these dossals to all our friends here, both old and new and yet tocome, we do it in memory of our son Paul Alan Andrade. We hope these twodossals will be uplifting to all that enter our sanctuary. We hope that when youcome and sit, meditate, pray and share, that you are uplifted and know that you allare in our hearts...always.

Peace and Love - Tony & Phyllis

This year's theme for our AWE Sundays and Faith Formation programs is Mindfulness on the Way and in the Prayer

Volunteer opportunities abound in the Hyde Park elementary school library East Church continues to sponsor through its Reading Changes Lives literacy initiative.

The regulations regarding volunteers is now a bit stricter than it has been in the past. Alll volunteers are required to complete and file a CORI form every year. This is done by each volunteer on line. Instructions follow.

Please remember to sign in and out each time you visit the school. The sign in notebook is on the stand outside the secretary's office. There are several notebooks, so please be sure to look for the Visitor book. In addition to security, the school administrators must know who is in the building at all times. In the event of fire or other emergency, the sign in book is used to help in the count in the event of the evacuation of the building. Before the first session, I will get information from the school about where we should meet outside.

We have set up a schedule for the Wednesday sessions which is below. There may be changes to accommodate school activities, testing, etc.

The Neighbors in Need offering, which we will receive on October 7, support the UCC's ministries of justice and compassion through the United States. Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries to find a wide array of local and national justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects. Through ucc.org/justice, our national Justice and Witness Ministries office offers resources, news updates, and actions alerts on a broad spectrum of justice issues. Working with members of the UCC Justice and Peace Action Network (a network of thoughsands of UCC justice and peace advocates), Justice and Witness continues its strong policy advocacy work on issues such as the federal budget, voting rights, immigration, health care, hate crimes, civil liberties, and environmental justice. Neighbors in Need also supports our American Indian neighbors in the UCC. One-third of the offering supports the UCC's Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM). Historically, forebears of the UCC established churches and worked with Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arickara, and Hocak in North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and northern Nebraska. Today there are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and one urban, multi-tribal UCC congregation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. These churches and their pastors are supported by CAIM. CAIM is also an invaluable resource for more than 1,000 individuals from dozens of other tribes and nations who are members of other UCC congregations in the U.S.

These are the network's values in this work: *We honor people's dignity and choices in a system that denies dignity and choice.*We expect messiness, confusion, and discomfort, and we also choose courage and trust.*We judge the system, not people*We fight for one another as family, because we are.

"MILTON CARES" OVERDOSE RESPONSE TEAM LAUNCHED

Milton, MA. Coinciding with National Recovery Month, the Milton Police Department and the Milton Substance AbusePrevention Coalition (MSAPC) are pleased to announce the official launch of "Milton Cares" on September 5th at 10:00am at TheMilton Police Department. They will be joined by Milton Cares partners including the Manet Community Health Center, thePolice Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (PAARI), Fallon Ambulance, Milton Health Department and the Beth IsraelDeaconess Hospital. The public is invited. Milton Cares has been a vision of Police Chief John King, as the opioid crisis had been gaining momentum in our community. The program planning process was made possible through a grant from the Blue Hills Community Health Alliance to hire LaurieStillman, Director of the Milton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, as the police department's planning consultant. Over thepast six months, she conducted research on similar programs across the state and investigated who might serve as partners inthe delivery of the program. The program's goal is to support families who are experiencing drug and/or alcohol dependency. A team, comprised of aSubstance Prevention Counselors certified to train and provide Narcan, and a Recovery Coach who has lived experience withaddiction and is trained to help others struggling with drug and alcohol dependency, will visit a household where there was arecent overdose or request for assistance. The team will be accompanied by a plain-clothed police officer to support the team. The individual who overdosed, or their loved ones, will be provided information on how they can receive support and access totreatment. "The Milton Police Department understands that addiction is a disease. Our goal with Milton Cares is to offer help to thoseresidents struggling with substance dependency. It is not to arrest", said Chief John King. "Services provided will beconfidential." "Milton Cares is consistent with the Ten Standards of Care for Addressing the Opioid Crisis by Police Departments, a publicationrecently released by Johns Hopkins University," said Laurie Stillman who directs the Milton Substance Abuse Prevention

Coalition. "We have a fantastic team of partners who, at no cost to the town, will be providing essential services to our manyresidents with substance use disorders." Caroline Kinsella, Milton's Public Health Director said, "Public Health Nurse Susan Poirier has been very busy assemblinginformational packets for the individuals with substance use disorders and for their families. These packets will be provided bythe team at the home visit. They have information on who to call for help, how to find support groups, where to get treatment, and how to use Narcan."

and how to use Narcan." Kim Kroeger, who oversees substance use programs at Manet said, "We have assigned our substance prevention counselors, whoare supported with a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, to join the Milton Cares Team. They areauthorized to provide households with Narcan-a life-saving drug during an opioid overdose- for those at high risk." Allie Hunter McDade, Executive Director of PAARI, has been providing the Milton Cares team with technical support. "We areexcited to see this project coming together under the leadership of Chief King, who is joining a growing movement of policedepartments taking proactive steps to connect individuals to treatment and recovery services. PAARI is pleased to make ourAmeriCorps Recovery Coach to support the effort and we think he will be an important asset to the outreach team." In addition, Christine Hamilton, Risk Manager at Fallon Ambulance, has been part of the planning team from the start. "Fallon ispleased to provide transportation to those who want to be transported to a rehabilitation facility. We are committed members ofthe Milton community and want to help out where we can during this opioid crisis," she said. "Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton is aware that addiction is a growing problem, andcongratulates the community in coming together to launch this critical and compassionate program," said Robert McCrystal, thehospital's Communications Director who has participated in the Milton Cares planning process. The program team will be activated following an overdose call to 9-1-1. However, referrals to the program can be made byanyone, so long as the need is for a Milton household.
