LANA’S MUSIC NOTES

CHANCEL CHOIR Hasn’t the choir loft looked empty? I surely have missed the choir! Hopefully, they have had a chance to sit with their spouses, experience worship from a different place in the sanctuary, talk with different people in the pews, or maybe they visited another church. Rehearsals will begin on Wednesday night, August 21st, at 6:00-7:30pm in the choir room. All are welcome, and it’s a wonderful time to join!

“Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to

exhortation, to teaching.” 1 Timothy 4:13

HANDBELLS Our first rehearsal will be Monday, Sep-tember 9th, from 5:00-6:00pm. TWO SLOTS ARE OPEN for bell ringers. One is in the smaller bells and the other in the lower bells. If you are interested in learning to ring, contact Lana ASAP. If you have previous experi-ence with music reading, it is helpful, but we will teach you how to ring! You can have private les-sons prior to rehearsals beginning.

SPECIAL MUSIC August 4 Wesley Powley will be singing accompanied by his grandfather, Ken Leach, on the guitar, “Here I Am, Lord” Aug. 11 Quartet: Kathy Frost, Robin Daniels, Larry Thornton, & Brad Veselick. “Wade in the Water” Aug. 18 Gail Holsclaw - Flute Aug. 25 The CHOIR is back! “Fount of Every Blessing” - arr. Lloyd Larson.

SALT Youth had an amazing summer! Our students have been very busy with summer jobs, hobbies, and youth events. The highlight of our summer was our trip to Camp Living Stones in Tennessee! We had an amazing time and many of our students grew in the faith tremendously!

Our school year for SALT youth will begin August 25th with a big Fall Kickoff. SALT will also be hosting 5th quarters after every home football game! We will have pizza and bonfires. We hope to host many of the youth around Pawleys Island that do not have a church home. All youth are welcome and encouraged to attend.

JAM Summer Our JAM kids have had an eventful summer. We met weekly on Tuesday nights and did weeks of art, crafts, outdoor activities, and other wild things. Our first night of JAM will be September 1st beginning 5:30-7:30pm! We are excited for another won-derful year together at PIPC!

Christian Education Team The Christian Education Team meets

the first Monday of every month at 6:00 PM in Founders Hall. We plan and organize Sunday school for all ages, Children’s Church, all children’s pro-grams, youth programs, adult studies, the nursery and the library.

Sunday school classes are offered for all ages. Adult classes meet in the Holsclaw Fellow-ship Center. We are blessed to have amazing adult Sunday school leaders. Each class offers a different study and they are always eager to welcome new members into their classes. Children’s Sunday school for preschoolers through 5th grade meets upstairs in the Administrative Building. Energetic teachers lead our children on a Jesus-filled journey every Sunday. Junior and Senior High students meet in the breakout rooms of Founders Hall focusing on studies that generate thought-provoking conversations about the scriptures. A class for college students and younger adult members meets in Founders Hall in the main room.

Children’s Church is offered for our youngest churchgoers during the worship hour. Chil-dren gather in the Administrative Building immedi-ately after the “Message for Young Disciples.” They worship in pews made especially for them while their adult leader provides a lesson, prayer and activities that mimic “big church.” Children ages 4-3rd grade are welcome.

Sunday nights are filled with worship during the school year. Our JAM ministry (Jesus and Me) welcomes children from our church, their friends and others in the community ages 4-5th grade from 5:30 - 7:30 pm beginning in early Sep-tember. In just two short hours, kids play games, learn music and instruments, participate in Bible les-

sons, and assemble amazing crafts. This is indeed an action-packed two hours and they still find time to visit the library and participate in the Bible Book-worm Reading Program graciously provided by the library volunteers. Some Sundays they take a break from their regular schedule to work on community projects such as visiting nursing homes, preparing food baskets for the hungry and making greeting cards.

SALT (Serving and Learning Together), PIPC’s program for 6th grade through high school meets each Sunday during the school year as well. As with our children’s ministry, SALT welcomes PIPC members and their friends. They begin each Sunday with games, music and praise. After a group study they break into smaller groups for in-depth reflec-tion with their small-group leaders. These teens also take some time out for community service and other ministries as well as fun and fellowship.

There are several opportunities for adults to study together during the week. The wom-en’s Bible study group, SOAR, meets on Tuesday eve-nings from 6:15-7:15 pm in Founders Hall during the Fall and again in early Winter. There are also 2 cir-cles that meet monthly. Additionally, there is a Men’s Breakfast on Saturday mornings and another small men’s group meeting on Friday mornings. Con-tact the CE chair or the church office if you are in-terested and would like more information.

The Christian Education Team is busy preparing for the fall/winter season with JAM & SALT Youth activities, adult small group studies, a special speaker series, Sunday school plans and many other events, so keep your eyes and ears open for more adult study opportunities coming later in the year!

The Christian Education Team is always looking for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering on the Team, please contact Jeanne Quinn, CE Team Chair, at [email protected].

FAMILY FIRST. .

“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Proverbs 22:6

Meet the Quinn Family Our Family of the Month!

Mike Quinn is a teacher and the boys’ varsity basketball coach at Waccamaw High School. He loves playing golf in his spare time. He is a fervent Redskins fan! Mike is a native of The Bronx, New York, but after 24 years in the Carolinas, he considers himself a southern-er! Mike is a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, but he sometimes makes an appearance at PIPC and always enjoys seeing the “good people” that worship here. Jeanne Quinn wears many hats, among them are wife, mother, sister, teacher and friend. She enjoys traveling, reading, studying the Bible, walking, jigsaw puzzles, card games and spending time with her family. She isn’t a Redskins fan, or much of a sports fan at all, but will play an occasional round of golf if the weather is perfect! Jeanne and her children joined PIPC about 15 years ago and in that time, she has served on many committees and volunteered in several capacities. She is actively serving as an Elder and Chair of the Christian Education Team. She also leads SOAR Women’s Bible Studies and teaches Sunday school. Jeanne and Mike were married in 2001 and moved to Pawleys Island in 2003 from Gas-tonia, NC (Jeanne’s hometown). Michael Quinn is 16 years old and attends Waccamaw High School. He has played on the JV basketball team and Varsity golf team. Most of his spare time is spent on the golf course, but he also works weekends at Captain John’s Seafood Restaurant! He was baptized in New York, but has attended PIPC since he was a baby. He volunteers with the recording of Sunday services and is active in SALT Youth group. Rob Henry, Carol Anne Henry and Martha Henry are all grown-up, college graduates and have flown the nest! All of them attended PIPC regularly until they moved away and all three attended College of Charleston. Rob and his wife, Rachael, own and operate 620 Prince, a luxu-ry Bed and Breakfast in Georgetown, SC and attend Prince George Anglican Church. Carol Anne lives in North Charleston, SC and Martha lives in Charlotte, NC. They visit from time to time and you will likely see them sitting with their mama in church on Sunday! They are a big, funny, loud family but LOVE their beach home and their church family! Thank you for taking the time to get to know them better!

As you are beginning another year, it’s time to get your book bags “blessed.” Join us on Sunday, August 18th, during the worship service for this annual event. Bring your book bags and they will be blessed and a special gift will be given to you to help remind you of God’s love for you every day!

So mark your calendars and bring your book bags on Sunday, August 18th, at 10:00 AM.

See you there!

Attention: All Educators

Are you an educator and don’t even realize it? If you are a Sunday school teacher, VBS leader, public or private school teacher, Bible study leader, or “teach” in any setting, you are invited to our annual “Blessing of the Book Bags” and “Education Sunday” on August 18th during the worship service. Baskervill Food Pantry 3rd Quarterly Food Drive Sunday, September 1st

The ever-changing Pantry grocery list reflects the items most needed at the present time. Pawleys Is-land Presbyterian Church, along with other churches in our community, support the Pantry by supplying food or financial donations throughout the year. Some churches provide specific items such as peanut butter, canned chicken, Cheerios, etc. and others choose to give monetary donations rather than host-ing food drives. PIPC agreed to hold four quarterly food drives this year to help meet the growing needs of the Pantry. In June 2019, the Pantry served 241 households/666 individuals – respectively 41/118 more than June of 2018. If you would like to support the Pantry this quarter, you can bring in a bag of groceries OR place a monetary contribution in the offering plate (cash or checks payable to PIPC earmarked Baskervill Pan-try) on Food Drive Sunday - Extravagant Giving Sunday. On behalf of the Baskervill Food Pantry and those whom it serves, Thank you!!!

All of the items below are suggestions The Pantry is grateful for everything you may choose to provide!

Low sodium and regular canned vegetables such as corn, green beans, peas, mixed vegetables, diced tomatoes etc.

Low sugar or packed in its own juice canned fruits Lower sodium hearty soups Beef stew, canned spaghetti and meatballs, ravioli, etc. Canned tuna Cereals: corn flakes, shredded wheat, raisin bran, and other healthy choices

JOY SCHOOL

“Finding JOY. . .”

Thank you all at PIPC for loving the JOY School for 35 years!

We had a terrific time with 52 children and young adults in classes of Music, Arts & Crafts, PE , Academics, Drama, Gardening, Swimming, and LIBRARY! It has been such a Blessing to continually feel Welcomed, LOVED, and Appreciated at JOY School right here in the Holsclaw Fellowship Center. There have been so many of you that have helped us along the way and we are so grateful. We are especially thankful for all who ensured our reading time with Librarians.

Check us out on our new website www.joyschoolpi.org

Next, we will begin to plan for the JOY University Program which meets on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the year for our over-21 friends.

Extravagant Offering Sunday

On Sunday, August 4th, we will receive the Tara Hall Home for Boys Offering during the worship service. Tara Hall Home for Boys accepts neglected, troubled and abused boys. It is an effective, Christ-centered, long-term residential school that develops moral, social, educational and life skills, thus building responsible contributing adults, while providing services to their families. For more information about Tara Hall, visit their website at https://www.tarahall.org. On Sunday, August 4th, all undesignated loose offering will be donated to the Mission of the Month: Tara Hall Home for Boys. Please make checks payable to PIPC and earmark them, “Tara Hall.”

Thank you for your support of this special ministry.

SOAR will meet every Tuesday evening 6:15-7:15 from October 1 – November 19, 2019 in Founders Hall. Our goals are to encourage women of all ages to grow in their relationship with God, read and study the Bible more often and nurture and love one another through Christian fellowship and prayer. Please join us! No matter where you are in your spir-itual journey, you are welcome!

Stronger: Finding Hope in Fragile Places

by Angela Thomas provides 6 weeks of per-sonal study experience five days a week plus 7 video sessions/discussion during the Tuesday women's Bible study.

Through biblical teaching and real life application, this study teaches that believ-ers do not have to live in weakness. God is stronger than every struggle you will ever face. All who receive Jesus Christ have been hidden in Him. We have been made alive in Him through the forgiveness of our sin, filled in Him with all the fullness given to Him, brought near to God in Him, and blessed with every spiritual blessing in Him.

Facilitated by Jeanne Quinn, this study will kick-off with a faith based “paint party” on September 24th at 6:00pm in Founders Hall. Space for the party is lim-ited, so please contact Jeanne ([email protected]) to reserve your spot. Books for the Soar study will be available that evening for purchase.
